"Helen is the best in the business, the cat's meow, the bees knees. I have left every visit feeling rejuvenated and relaxed. I went through some serious shoulder physical therapy, and have hip dysplasia; and in painful times, seeing her for massage therapy could be the only good part of a month. I am enormously grateful that I had the time I did with her while in Florida... and I'm so sad that she's relocated... but anyone in her new network area is truly in for a treat."

"Julie is by far the best massage therapist I've ever seen! I always walked out of her prenatal massages feeling better than ever which is saying a lot considering I had lots of edema, leg cramps and back pains prior to the sessions. She is incredible and I highly recommend her services!"

"SO AMAZING. Seriously life changing experience. Tom fixed up my shoulders, hips, neck, legs, all in one sitting. I feel like a new human being again. I've had all these posture issues all my life, so it feels so amazing to be freed from it. Tom is great at what he does, and he is great company as well! It was my first real massage and he always gave a heads up if something was going to hurt. He's very passionate about what he does, and he's amazing at it too! Very pleasant to be around, and had great conversations. 10/10 would recommend to anyone who has any body pain issues. Thank you so much! Can't wait for the next session. P.S. it will hurt so good! haha"

"Anthony and Barbaria Fitness saved my life. I started working with Anthony last fall after I had lost a significant amount of weight. I told him I wanted to gain a few pounds, put on some muscle, and feel better about my physical well-being, and he has helped me do exactly that. He not only works closely with me, monitoring each movement and position, but also checks in with me regarding health and nutrition. He is very knowledgeable when it comes to the muscles of the body and how they work, as well as health and wellness. In two short months, I had already seen tremendous results, and look forward to working with him every week. If you're looking for someone well-versed in health and fitness, Anthony is your guy! "

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is Thai massage?

Thai massage, also called Thai yoga massage, combines acupressure and assisted yoga postures. Thai massage is based on the flow of energy through the body and focuses on energy lines called “sen.” It doesn’t use oils or lotions and, instead of rubbing muscles, the massage therapist compresses, pulls, stretches and rocks the recipient’s body to promote the flow of energy through these sen. In this form of massage therapy, practitioners use their hands, knees, legs and feet to apply deep muscle compression and stretch the body. It’s often performed on a mat on the floor instead of on a massage table. Like most forms of massage, Thai massage is used to relieve stress, improve range of motion and enhance flexibility. Some people also use Thai massage to address a range of health issues, including:

  • Relieving tension headaches
  • Decreasing back pain
  • Reducing joint stiffness and pain
  • Stimulating circulation and lymphatic drainage
  • Boosting energy

Because a traditional Thai massage session covers all of the muscles in your body, it typically lasts 90 minutes to 120 minutes.

How much do you tip a massage therapist?

All forms of massage therapy, from Thai massage to Swedish massage to deep tissue massage, are similar to other spa or hospitality services. So it’s appropriate to tip a massage therapist the standard hospitality rate of 15 percent to 20 percent of the cost of the session. For example, the national average cost for a deep tissue massage is $70-$90, so expect to tip $12-$18. Of course, you can always tip more or less depending on your experience, especially if you’ve opted for extra services. For example, expect to tip more for a couple’s hot stone massage session that includes aromatherapy. Also, if you’re paying with a gift certificate or coupon, or purchasing a discounted multi-session package, make sure to calculate your tip based on the full price of the massage.
