Chef Marcel and his associates did an outstanding job for me. He catered a full buffet dinner for 80 guests in a garden setting. The appetizers, entrees and sides were as lovely as they were delicious. His servers, assistants and bartenders were consummate professionals. He also assisted me with furniture and equipment rentals as well as bar supplies. He and his associates left their work areas in perfect condition. I highly recommend Chef Marcel and would definitely use him again myself.

San Francisco City Hall for a wedding reception has many rules and regulations as it is a government building and requires a lot of security and supervision. In addition to that, there isn't a kitchen on site so a tent is required as well as all rental equipment. Chef Mark and his group truly went above and beyond for our event. My husband does not like seafood at all but after our tasting, he was so impressed with the fish that he even considered having the fish as his entree for our wedding. Our guests were so impressed by our appetizers and dinner. We were assured restaurant quality and I wasn't surprised when all of our guests complimented us on how delicious the food was. It was catered specifically to us and Chef Mark and Roy spent time with us discussing what we would like for ourselves and our guests. Everything was tailored specifically to our celebration and that is truly a representation of us for the night. It was more than we could have asked for. We can't thank you enough for this. My initial concern was that Mark Kearney's Group is based from LA whereas our wedding in San Francisco but the communication was always frequent and Roy was very responsive and caring about our concerns. From start to finish they always assured us that they truly wanted to make sure our special night went without any concerns and they were on our side. Our event did not go without any bumps and when I found out from our wedding coordinator that a broken stove was delivered, I just couldn't believe that Chef Mark and his crew was able to deliver such wonderful meals to our guests under such a stressful situation. It's not the events that go flawlessly that are impressive but the ones that have a lot of obstacles that are impressive. I had absolutely no idea the kind of stress that must have been involved and our coordinator only told us afterwards so we had no idea on the day of. It is truly a mark of their professionalism. The thing is, I was already so impressed with all the other details that Chef Mark went out of his way to take care of for us. He made sure that a bottle of champagne was saved for us. When appetizers came around he specifically made sure my favorite came to me directly. When he flew up for our walk through, he took the time to take a picture of my husband and me because he was excited for us. We never requested any of these, but he just did them because he cares. His execution of the night was perfect as far as I am concerned and did not go unnoticed by ALL of our other vendors. EVERYONE was very impressed and I am so incredibly grateful and thankful for him and Roy and the rest of their team. You guys are amazing and we can't thank you enough!! We love you!

Pam catered a buffet family dinner for 40 people for us on Xmas day. We hired her with only two weeks warning. She promised a moist tasty turkey and delicious salmon and she delivered. All the food was delicious. The cranberry sauce was excellent. She was unobtrusive, on time and very helpful. We'd definitely hire her again.

Ms. Johnson did an amazing job catering my event, hosted at St. Vincent de Paul, Council of Los Angeles Thrift Store for the SDSA General Membership Meeting, of 100 people with a buffet, drinks, hors d'oeuvre, and recyclable cutlery. Ms. Johnson helped me determine the best menu for my clients and type of event to make specific to my needs and all within my budget! Her staff was friendly, helpful, and self sufficient. I highly recommend Super Food for Super People for your next corporate event!

I can not say enough good things about Roger and Gabe. They catered our office's Administrative Professionals Day luncheon and did a fantastic job! They arrived on time, had the food ready on time, and constantly kept enough food in our buffet. We have a few vegetarians in our office and Roger prepared cauliflower steaks for them. By the time one of our vegetarians got to the BBQ, her cauliflower steak had been mistakenly eaten by someone. Without being asked, Roger ran over to a nearby grocery store and purchased another cauliflower steak to make for our employee. While there was plenty of vegetarian sides for her to enjoy and she didn't make a fuss, Roger still took it upon himself to fix a mistake that was our fault - not his. Oh and the most important part, the food is amazing! Everyone in our office was raving about the food, that is before we all fell into our food comas. :) Big Mann BBQ is fantastic. I cannot recommend them enough!

Steven came to our home, to serve my husband and me our anniversary dinner. He brought a beautifully printed out menu explaining the courses. He brought his own dishware which was lovely. From the well displayed appetizers to the meal itself ... we were delighted! The food was five star! And dessert was impressive! A very wonderful experience from beginning to end. What a treat to have an impeccably dressed chef walk through the door of our home and create pure deelish!!! Thank you to Steven!!! Michael and Cindy Thee Ashburn, Virginia

Work quality - phenomenal Professionalism - fantastic Responsiveness - Joanna couldn't have been more responsive if she tried. Value- heck yes! Do you know how pricey mobile bartending and catering vendors can be in LA? This company is a steal considering the amount of collaboration and quality of service your receive. Punctuality - On time, super fast in setting up, even faster tearing down. I highly recommend this vendor. I planned an entire event from another state and Joanna made me feel like I had nothing to worry about on her end. Will work with her again for sure.

David and Molly catered a 45 person party. We settled on a luau theme and they did a great job of setting the menu and executing. They arrived on time to set up the food and everything looked great! They set up, we enjoyed, then they came back a few hours later to clean up the food and set out the desserts. Our guests enjoyed everything they ate and a few asked for David's contact info. I will definitely use them again.

I left this review on the Knot.com and thought I would repeat this here. We loved having Feast as our caterer for our wedding and highly recommend them. "For our wedding we were connected with Marcus and Feast Catering through a good friend who used to work at the Annenberg Beach House. What a great recommendation! Marcus sat down with us and was flexible in working with our budget. We really appreciated this. We were able to do a tasting with him, and Marcus was very receptive to feedback. We asked for an Asian influence for the menu and Marcus and his team pulled it off beautifully and creatively. The food was delicious. They arranged a beautiful beet salad that looked great in all the photos. We had soju coconut cocktails. The wines were good too. My niece said it was her favorite wedding food ever - Marcus was so kind to ask if we wanted a special meal for the few children that were attending. They had mac n' cheese, chicken nuggets - their favorites! Marcus managed his staff well, too. They decorated the tables nicely with the linens and Feast arranged the heat lamps and all the rentals for us. All of the staff were courteous and friendly - great service. Feast assigned a special person to look out for us as the bride and groom and make sure that we had all that we wanted - seconds on the buffet, an extra piece of wedding cake, another cocktail, anything. Thank you so much, Marcus!"

We hired Shelley for our wedding in April and LOVED her work! When we met with her she was very interested in us and our preferences, and was very helpful in reigning our scatterbrained thoughts in. She offered an array of appetizers, garlic bread, green beans (the biggest hit of all our guests!), and a creamy pasta. Although we didn't use them, she could provide dinnerware. She even visited our venue with us to get an idea of the kitchen and facilities. We never got to try the appetizers because our guests cleaned them up, so they must have been good! All through the evening everyone was amazed how good the food was. The food truly exceeded our expectations, and working with Shelley was a joy as well. She and her staff were friendly, prompt, very professional, and she worked miracles with that food. Thank you so much!

Chef LaTay prepared an Excellent Brunch for my Father- in-Law's Home Going Celebration. The menu she suggested was a Hugh Hit! Pleasing to the palette and very nicely displayed. Everyone raved about the cheese grits and roasted potatoes, I still get compliments and the event was nine months ago! Since the event was buffet style her team also took charge of announcing and directing when each table came up an added plus for our family. Thank you Latay!

Amazingly delicious food. From appetizers to main dishes to desserts, I was delighted with not only the taste, but the lovely presentation. I highly recommend her for any occasion! I try to avoid sweets but could not resist hers. I especially like that she uses fresh, organic, savory ingredients. I don't know my way around the kitchen, but she makes everything look so easy, I want to take a cooking class with her.

I absolutely loved my party because Iris was there to take care of everything, including the cleanup. There was an abundance of delicious appetizers and her crew served them to our guests as well as made and served the drinks. We have heard from several people how beautiful and delicious everything was. We'll certainly call Iris for our next party!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good caterer?

Reviews, interviews and menu tastings will help you find the right catering choice for your big day. Start by screening possible wedding caterers based on past reviews. If a caterer you are interested in has a review that concerns you, ask them about it; how they respond will be very telling. Next, ask about their availability for your wedding date.

If the wedding caterer is available on your date, it’s time to talk about menus and prices. Be clear about what your maximum budget is find out what choices this will allow you. Caterers may custom-create a menu for your event, or they may have menu templates within different price ranges that can guide your decision. A clear budget gives the caterer clear parameters within which to work and offer creative suggestions. Schedule a menu tasting to confirm you love your wedding menu. Once you have a menu and date, and have paid a deposit to reserve the caterer’s services, confirm additional details including when the food will be delivered to the site, what kind of service will be provided, how many servers will be onsite and for how long, and who is responsible for setup and cleanup. The more specific your contract, the fewer worries you’ll have on your wedding day. Get more smart hiring tips here.

Do you tip a wedding caterer?

Tipping 15 percent to 20 percent on a $3,000 catering bill can feel daunting — especially in light of all the other costs of throwing a wedding — but tipping your wedding caterer is standard practice. Be sure to ask your caterer about their specific policies. Many catering companies include gratuity as a line item on their bill. If tipping is not automatically included in your total, a good approach is to tip all the people involved the day of the event rather than paying one lump sum to the catering company. For each server and bartender, you can tip $20-$50, depending on how long they were onsite and whether they did exceptional work. You can also tip the chef; experts suggest $50. It’s also a good idea to tip the catering manager, the point-of-contact person who keeps the catering service running smoothly the day of your wedding, ensures all the food looks beautiful and is plentiful, and resolves any mishaps. Industry pros recommend tipping the catering manager $100-$200. If gratuity is not included and you’re tipping individuals, set aside $200-$500 in cash to be safe.

How much does wedding catering cost per person?

Wedding catering costs will always vary based on the number of guests you’re inviting, the menu you want to serve, and the way the food will be served to your guests. As you interview wedding catering companies, you’ll be presented with a cost per person for various menus. On the low end, wedding catering may cost approximately $15-$18 per person. This would include prepared food only, with no setup or service of any kind. The starting price for a simple buffet meal with minimal service typically averages $22 per person. Opting for the same menu with all organic ingredients could raise your costs to about $33 per person. A moderately upscale menu (finer ingredients, more elaborate presentation) could range from $24 to $34 per person. High-end wedding catering cost truly has no limit. Lobster, filet mignon, specialty seafood, organic ingredients — menu choices like these can boost your cost per person up to $150 and more.

How much does it cost to hire a caterer?

Catering prices depend mainly on how fancy you want the food and service to be and how many guests you’ll have. When you’re first looking to hire a caterer for your event, consider how many guests you’ll have and your total food and drink budget. The national average for event catering is $340, but catering prices can range into the thousands depending on your menu, guest count, and service.

Event catering is a broad term that covers everything from fully prepared, ready-to-eat food that the hosts plate and serve themselves to full-service, multicourse meals, including rental of linens, glassware and other items, with service staff organized by the catering company. Usually a caterer will determine cost based on the type of event you’re having, how many guests will attend, the level of service you desire, and what type of menu you’d like to have. For example, if you have a set catering budget, say $1,500, and you plan to have 50 people attend, that means you have $30 per person for food. If you have the same budget with 100 people, you have $15 per person for food. In this way, the number of people you want to attend your event and the level of food you want to serve them determines how much catering will cost.

What should you look for in a caterer?

A delicious meal is a critical element of a successful wedding, with happy guests fondly remembering your fabulous wedding food. The right caterer for you will be:

  • Available: Even the best caterer is no good if they aren’t available on your wedding date. Ask early before you get your heart set on someone.
  • Affordable for you: Find a caterer that you can afford. Having a spending plan ahead of time will mean you won’t overspend on food.
  • A good personality fit: Wedding planning is stressful, so work with someone that you can get along with and communicate with easily.
  • Experienced and recommended: Ensure the company has a proven track record with events of your size and the references to back it up.
  • Transparent about money: Steer clear of shady pricing. Find a caterer who is very clear about costs and is happy to talk you through budgets and pricing options.
  • Transparent about food: Find someone who is clear about where they source their food from and where it is prepared.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
