Michelle is a warm and inviting person who made me feel comfortable very quickly. She has been a great mentor and helped me overcome many obstacles in the aftermath of a serious life event I experienced. I felt I could be me without any concern for fear of how she may react. I have done traditional therapy but have preferred her holistic approach to combining therapy with a goal oriented approach to solving problems one may be experiencing. I have been able to get to a much better place in my life thanks to her support and the perspective she helps me obtain through self reflection. She encourages you just enough to help you push past your self-set limits without ever feeling like she is pushing you past your boundaries. Somehow, I always get to the realization I need on my own terms but with the help of her encouragement. I love her approach and feel that her respectful manner along with her warm, understanding attitude creates a space for one to really get down to one's core and find one's self in the process. She has truly been a gift to my life.

Kim is such a wonderful kind and caring therapist she took her time to get to know me and ask questions about me so that I may get the full benefit of the therapy. She wrote a program that was tailored to me and what I wanted to accomplish. I came in and out of hypnosis 2x. She is so positive and it was easy to talk to her. Will be going back to her. If you have a problem I recommend you see her you will see a difference in your first session.

Best trainer I've ever worked with. Sees each body as it's own unique self... Starts at the beginning with stability and mobility creating a strong foundation. In the last couple of month working together I have seen my body change drastically, my endurance has improved, and I'm stronger and leaner. His background in physical therapy, and his knowledge about the body stand him far apart from your typical personal trainer. So grateful I found him!

I highly recommend Miss Briscoe to anyone seeking a good hypnotherapist! I only went in for a single session of self-discovery, but came out so much more enlightened and at peace with myself. Miss Briscoe is incredibly professional and works hard before, during, and after the actual trance to ensure that you benefit as much as possible from your therapy, and she truly cares about her clients. Whether you go in once like I did for a single self-discovery session or continually for a chronic problem, you will not regret choosing Miss Briscoe.

Before I met Dr. Stephanie I suffered with depression on a daily basis. I saw her for therapy for about a year and my depression is now gone! She was understanding, patient, and gave me guidance. Each session was relaxing and therapeutic and I left feeling renewed and rejuvenated. I learned tools that helped me with relaxation, self-love and acceptance, and how to make new friends and build healthy relationships. THANK YOU Dr. Stephanie, you are amazing and I appreciate what you did for me, and since our time together I now live a joyous life.

I met Heather in my mid 20s back in 1997. At the time she had office hours at my gym and I was looking to lose weight. I never would have thought that stopping in to see Heather after a spinning class at my gym would have brought me to so much more; I had no idea what door I was opening. I started seeing her for weekly appointments and soon found myself in one of the most influential relationships of my life and at a time of tremendous personal growth. A desire to look good on the outside led me to Heather who led me to really look within, for the first time, in terms of food and health. She taught me about emotional eating and all the aspects of nutrition one ignores when just wanting to "be skinny" as opposed to healthy. She helped me deal with my specific, complex endocrine disorders (PCOS, Hashimoto's disease), and with how body image, shame, and self-worth manifest themselves in one's behaviors. Ultimately, and better than any psychotherapist has, Heather guided me through dealing with childhood trauma and adult bulimia. Heather is the only person I've met with the qualifications and ability to deal with all aspects of my food: psychology, nutrition, behavior, and spirit. Gaining Heather as my practitioner has been truly one of the biggest blessings of my life; now in my 40s I look back with a perspective of knowing gratitude as I still turn to the tools and insight she taught me.

'Natara has been my guide to the ultraworld for years. Her caring and open way leads me to discover new and exciting things about myself and others. Her integrity and sense of quiet balance are the gifts which set her apart as a teacher, healer, and shaman in a workshop or large ceremony gathering. I look forward each year to my month-by-month reading, and have traveled to participate in her sound bath therapy and Reiki sessions. I especially recommend her "Shift" workshop which is like an unrolling of one big bounteous medicine bundle for everyone to find something (or everything) to enjoy. Thank you, 'Natara for your unwavering and bright light in this time of great and accelerating change.

We offer Buddhist-based counseling and therapy. Try a non-traditional alternative. The Spiritual Adulthood Therapy & Counseling Project is a Buddhist-based, more alternative Asian approach to relating with your "self". "What is accepted by the majority of people does not mean it is real." - The Buddha, 500 BC We provide private, insightful, one-on-one therapy and mindfulness life coaching and relationship counseling for marriages, couples, all kinds of partnerships, workplace and friendships. For emotional and communication breakdowns, we offer "reaching out to reach deep in". "The lotus has its roots in the dank dark mud, Grows up through the cloudy deep water, And finally rises to the surface. It blooms into perfect harmony and purity in the sunlight. It is like the mind unfolding into perfect joy and wisdom..." - The Lotus Sutra Please go now to our counseling blog site; the best info is there! You will find many more of your FAQs responded there. It's really an interesting site. Take your time to graze around in it. Hopefully, you'll certainly know a lot more about what you need when you've done some reading at the blog. The Spiritual Adulthood Therapy & Counseling Project is located at Santa Monica, CA 90405; near Santa Monica College. For our email and phone number, see the service window. The best phone times to contact us are noon to 6 p.m. from Monday to Friday. The initial phone contact is always the best and most immediate. Thanks, Akasa Levi, DhMA ( D.Min.) Counseling Supervisor "Take the first step in faith. You don't have to see the whole staircase; just take the first step." - Martin Luther King At Spiritual Adulthood, we apply the Buddhist psycho-spiritual approach to the mind. "The journey itself is the destination!" We offer a uniquely combined counseling: an innovative, holistic, spiritual variation of the mind-therapies, based in practical, quite highly scientific Buddhist wisdom combined with a gentle, accepting, gradual compassionate view towards all beings. "Buddhist mindfulness-based guidance" with its long humanitarian history, is a well-respected ancient Asian, non-religious, more spiritual option to the regular standard model of Western clinical therapies. Buddhism is not "religious", it is Asian-psychology based. You certainly can be a sincere, deeply spiritual person without being religious, without having any higher authorities and that helps to truly open the heart and mind to trust and sensibility. This is not a licensed psychotherapy! Please visit our blog for the details and the disclaimer. We assist in healing the mind in the midst of these very edgy, scary, confusing, disappointing, over-driven, tense, survival-stressed, anxious uncertain times. Buddhist Inner Work: "Therapy" is not found in even the best of books or CDs, or on the internet. It's a live interactive relating process; it always has been. Interactively, that's how the problems started. Well, that's how they have to resolve! For the therapy, two people sit down and emphatically work on one of them. It's living, live, dynamic and face to face. This time around, it's a cooperative dyad of two people who care, and are in on this. Therapy counseling is a relationship in its truest form, and that's always disturbingly risky for the wounded spirit to change. "The greatest risk is not taking one." Spiritual Adulthood is offering a much more radical form of counseling, more geared to people in the whole spectrum of contemporary creative arts and the best of new thought-minded sensibilities. Maybe it is more green, liberal, or cultural and creative. Maybe it is just you. The Spiritual Adulthood exploration encourages and supports a very eclectic "inquiry into self" practice, combining the cool, calm observation approach of traditional, quiet mindfulness meditation with effective "crazy wisdom" irrationality of Zen-mind realizations that can cognitively short circuit the common, but so obsessive self-involved, self-absorbed and self-identified ego mind. "One easily made, very common mistake is to think that your reality is "the" reality. You must always be prepared to bravely leave your reality for a greater one." - Meeraji We encourage highly inquisitive, progressive-minded people, with a natural, deep love of learning who relish the abstract, and even the absurd and have a genuine taste for the indefinable existential stuff. Buddhist psychology is playful too. "...ever noticed that it's always now." - Alan Watts He suggests that you repeatedly keep noticing this many times a day. Usually, the people who do eventually come to us are more explorative, curious, do have a more active intellect and are innately, intensely inquisitive people by their nature. There are not ordinary Americans. The "inner search", "the quest" and "the mystery" are the understanding of it all. They are people who relish the "safari" of it, the search, the inquiry, the brave quest of it, hurting or not, rather than popular ideas and packaged prescriptions just served-up and ready to eat. There is no quick fix. Enlightened freedom is experiential. It is not just a home-deliverable product. For each of us, all growth is a life-long psychological pilgrimage, experienced through a compassionate spiritual heart that includes live, full, rich relationship experiences with all other living beings. Question: "Grandfather, what is destiny?" Destiny is every step we are taking and going through right now to get there. "So, you really must consciously choose and make the choice of good spirits to re-choose again and again to openly talk truth with someone and keep it up. Keep it up to openly keep talking with someone. This is to be open to trust in gradually letting it all arise and unfold, messy or tidy, depressed or distressed. We all have these feelings. It's nothing new." - Grandfather Bearheart, contemporary Creek Elder "Eighty percent of success is just showing up." - Woody Allen Go ahead, and get into some quality counseling or therapy. You are really being heard here or somewhere that they will really take a deep caring to listen to you and really, really hear you and that is a very courageous move on your part: to move yourself into a counseling setting. It just may be the right place for you to start. Be very welcome to inquire more about us, as you search out where to do this inner work. Please read some more on this site. Buddhist-based wisdom offers compassionate, effective alternative approaches to relating with your "self" and all other living beings. Awaken the "compassionate insight" that is naturally deep within you and within mostly everyone. This is a liberal-minded therapy for intelligent, sensitive, intellectual and gifted, creative people who are often odd, often wonderfully offbeat, yet are now very discomforted, unhappy people. We offer an empathic, warm Asian-style of alternative treatment of mind well-being that just may be a more natural, truly effective, non-traditional approach. We are offering another possibility as a workable therapy approach for you. "The privilege of a lifetime is being truly who you are." - Joseph Campbell Phone us, and let's really take a few minutes together to talk on the phone and find out a bit more about what's going on within you. There are no obligations! It's a free phone consultation! Please go to our blog site and read a bit. There are a bundle of appointment details there and some sensible, solid good recommendations on how to even approach the idea of beginning some serious counseling or therapy, but there are no promises, no guarantees. Each individual situation is different and certainly, effectiveness may vary; yet it may be worth giving it a try. "And then the day came when the risk to remain tight in a bud was more painful than the risk it took to blossom"- Anais Nin Buddhist therapy has been done very effectively for 2,557 years. "As human beings, our greatness lies not so much in being able to remake the world, as in being able to remake ourselves. Become the changes you want to see in the world." - Mahatma Gandhi This can be done. Give it and you a chance! If you know someone else in your life who just may also benefit by our offerings, be very welcome to put them in phone touch with us. We offer a free phone consultation, but please ask them to visit our blog-site first. We also offer: * The Laughing Buddha Sangha Buddhist meditation classes and retreats. Visit our "Buddha-blog" meditation site. * The Zen Men group. Good men are becoming even better men! Men's inner growth groups explore a man's deeper core issues. Every guy could use being in a men's group at some time in his life. Men are learning to trust and support each other in making important life changes.

I am in awe at the beauty of their spirit and there ability to create a new reality. Through guidance and perseverance I find that my client's always find a way to move through the obstacles that life presents, which they bring forward to learn from. There is a personal myth that is shared from each client that I get to know. It unfolds in metaphor and because of this I am granted to witness the deeper side of a person whom I honor and appreciate with great reverence. The way one chooses to move through the journey of life is so unique. Sometimes there's an easier route but the difficult path opens the door for one to observe self, knowing there's always a way to walk through life with more ease and grace. Whatever way one chooses to lead their life is the perfect way for them in that moment. May we all learn to take risks and be more of who we want to be.

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What are the types of psychologists?

Psychologists are healthcare professionals who use scientific methods to understand the relationships between the brain, environment and behavior. Psychologists may focus on research — studying how the brain and various environments drive behaviors to better understand the issues that trouble patients and society as a whole — or they may focus on practice — interacting with people using therapeutic methods. The American Psychological Association shares some of the more prevalent types of psychologists:

      • Clinical psychologists assess and treat mental, emotional and behavioral disorders.
      • Cognitive and perceptual psychologists study human perception, thinking and memory.
      • Community psychologists work to strengthen the abilities of communities, settings, organizations and broader social systems to meet people’s needs — such as improving support for victims of natural disasters, or working to improve health policies.
      • Counseling psychologists help people understand and take action on everyday issues, career and work problems, and serious adversity.
      • Developmental psychologists study the psychological development of the human being throughout life.
      • Educational psychologists concentrate on how effective teaching and learning take place.
      • Engineering psychologists conduct research on how people work best with machines.
      • Environmental psychologists study the dynamics of how people interact with their environments.
      • Evolutionary psychologists study how evolutionary principles such as mutation, adaptation and selective fitness influence human thought, feeling and behavior.
      • Experimental psychologists study cognitive processes, comparative psychology (cross-species comparisons), and learning and conditioning.
      • Forensic psychologists apply psychological principles to legal issues.
      • Health psychologists specialize in how biological, psychological and social factors affect health and illness.
      • Industrial/organizational psychologists apply psychological principles and research methods to the workplace to improve productivity, health and the quality of work life.
      • Neuropsychologists and behavioral neuropsychologists explore the relationships between brain systems and behavior.
      • Quantitative and measurement psychologists focus on methods and techniques for designing experiments and analyzing psychological data.
      • Rehabilitation psychologists work with stroke and accident victims, people with mental disabilities, and those with developmental disabilities caused by such conditions as cerebral palsy, epilepsy and autism.
      • School psychologists assess and counsel students, consult with parents and school staff, and conduct behavioral interventions when appropriate.
      • Social psychologists study how a person’s mental life and behavior are shaped by interactions with other people.
      • Sport psychologists help athletes refine their focus on competition goals, become more motivated, and learn to deal with anxiety and fear of failure around competition.

      What is a psychologist?

A psychologist is a professionally trained mental health professional who helps patients navigate challenging life situations or mental health issues. To become a psychologist you must earn a doctoral degree; qualifying degrees include a Ph.D., Psy.D. or Ed.D. To actively practice, a psychologist must be licensed in their state and maintain good standing. Psychologists are trained to administer tests that can evaluate a patient’s cognitive strength and weaknesses, intellectual skills, vocational aptitude and preference, personality characteristics, and neuropsychological functioning, explains the American Psychological Association (APA).

A psychologist meets with patients in an office and may work with a variety of methods, depending on patient need, such as cognitive, behavioral or interpersonal.  According to the APA, common reasons a person may visit a psychologist include:

      • Dealing with depression, anger or anxiety over a long period of time.
      • Help with a chronic condition that is interfering with their lives or physical health.
      • Help with grieving and other abrupt transitions.
      • Overcoming addictions.
      • Managing chronic illness.
      • Breaking old and harmful patterns of thinking or behavior.

Can a clinical psychologist write prescriptions?

To be able to write a prescription, a clinical psychologist must practice in a state that permits them to do so, and must either have a master’s degree in psychopharmacology or have completed the required advanced training program. According to the American Psychological Association (APA), five states currently permit psychologists to write prescriptions: Idaho, New Mexico, Illinois, Iowa and Louisiana. Many psychologists who are not able to write prescriptions work in partnership with psychiatrists, pediatricians or primary care doctors to help their patients who need medication.

      How much do therapists cost?

If you are experiencing a challenging time, have mental health difficulties, or just want professional guidance as you move through life, a therapist can provide relief, tools and structure. The national average cost for a therapist is $80-$100 per hour, although prices may be higher or lower depending on geographic location and the experience and training of the therapist.

Psychiatrists, psychologists and licensed therapists are all health professionals who offer various modalities of therapy. Ask questions about the type of therapy they specialize in (such as cognitive or behavioral, etc.) and their area of expertise (such as grief, anxiety, body image disorders, etc.) to help you find the right fit for your needs. Therapy sessions are typically 50-60 minutes long.  The patient usually meets with the therapist in their office; sessions may also be held remotely (via Skype, etc.) or in a clinical setting. Psychologists, psychiatrists and other therapists who have earned advanced degrees will typically charge higher rates than other licensed therapists. Depending on your diagnosis, your health insurance may cover your therapy costs.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
