She did her research about my technical field to know how to describe me in a resume. She explains well about the type of resume writing style is necessary and the language that is use to communicate my skills. I will recommend to others about her editing and composing a resume language after interviewing with me. She takes the time to personalize your resume. I was worry that my technical field will be difficult to comprehend in a resume, but I am glad I got a chance to work with her creatively through the process.

I have been pondering in my ❤ for over twenty years to take a chance with my writing of songs and pomes. When I finally decide to take a chance on my maniusripts, I found the right person for me. I finally decide to take a chance and spend some money. Not so much for speeding the money, it was my pride. If you want something done, then do it. Thankyou Melanie, we need you. Karryn did a great job helping me organize my overfilled clothes closets, and helped me maximize my space. I was feeling quite overwhelmed with my abundance of clothes and shoes and she helped me organize things in a way that I could sustain. She is timely and focused on getting the job done. My only critique was that many clothes were moved into another part of the house to make space, that I ultimately I had the nightmare of dealing with on my own after she left. One room became clean and another somewhat of a mess. We discussed bringing her back in to help but our schedules became too busy. Nonetheless, I recommend using Karryn for organization needs.

Skip Press displayed outstanding literary writing skills when he edited my romance novel. He turned it into an entertaining, compelling, fluent, and beautiful story that will be memorable to all its readers. Besides, Skip is personable, reliable, and gets the work finished on time without any hassle. As a result of my good experience working with Skip, I highly recommend him to other authors. Annie S. Brad prepared a quality resume & cover letter for me. We met at his office and spent close to an hour learning about my sales background and what I wanted to achieve in a job. I even referred a friend who hired him based on my suggestion. Upon my initial resume I never asked for a re-write till now. I wasn't receiving any responses on the positions I applied for. Brad went out of his way to work with me on some re-write adjustments and now I feel 100% more confident. I strongly recommend his services.

I worked with Emily Kazmierski for 3 years. We have both grown in the field of editing. She is an accomplished editor and writer. In fact, she trained me and was very patient and knowledgeable. She possesses all the techniques and skills for editing and writing, and her turnaround time is outstanding. Her attention to detail (especially comma splices) is exceptional, and her ability to stay organized is excellent. Emily is a true talent in the field of editing and writing, and anyone who has worked with her knows of her gifts. She brings a great deal to the table, and I believe that she is the finest editor and writer around.

I am a software developer looking to gain some knowledge in statistics for developing automated stock trading systems. JD and I corresponded many time through Thumbtack, but I did not use his services. He was honest enough to tell me that the likelihood of writing a profitable system is very low. He also has a background in IT, which makes me respect his opinion even more. I would recommend JD, and if I ever need statistics help he will be the first person I call.

When working with a professional writer a business has to consider the writer's qualifications. Christopher from Ghost Strategies has a science background(Aeronautical Engineering), is an attorney and has written professionally for over 20 years. Because of this background he is very detailed oriented and is used to meeting deadlines. His science background means that he considers the substantive topic as well as good editing and writing practices in performing any project. He was an asset to my law firm and to my clients over a number of years.

I was frantically searching online for some help in writing a Roast for my husband’s surprise 40th birthday and I found Adam. I'm so glad I did! He got back to me quickly and had a draft to me in a few short days. He was nice and very laid back. I could not believe how he managed to capture my husband personality with just a few short questions. He painted an exact picture of him. I wanted something funny and really wanted to give my husband a hard time. This roast was perfect! I was nervous about getting up in front of a crowd, but having this made it SO much easier. And on top of that it was HILARIOUS! I received so many compliments and the room was full of laughs throughout the entire roast. He even managed to get a few “digs” in there on some friends and family members. I can’t thank Adam enough! You did an amazing job! I’ll be calling you again for my sister’s wedding.

Rand was exceptionally helpful with my son's college application procedure and ultimate school selection. His expertise and guidance made my son's college search experience much less daunting than it could have been. Rand's approach is all encompassing. He is well versed in the entire process, utilizing lots of college app resources, his terrific writing skills and his funny, warm personality. During his junior year, my son (Scott) and Rand worked closely together to develop an entire strategy which included test prep, application paperwork, and a compelling personal story that would be relevant to each of his college choices. Rand's style also helped to increase Scott's confidence, allowing him to understand that he would be fine at any of the schools he chose. This helped make my life easier as well - that first senior semester is extra stressful for everyone (Scott ultimately was accepted at his first choice, but he really believed any of his choices would have been great too). I would highly recommend Rand, and believe his help could benefit other college bound juniors and seniors.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you hire a good grant writer?

Grants are available to nonprofit organizations, for-profit businesses that qualify for government grants, and individuals who qualify for foundation or government grants. Hiring a good grant writer can help you gain funding in your chosen field. According to the American Grant Writers’ Association, grant writers can help you research potential grant opportunities; write grant proposals, create budgets, and build budget narratives; review written materials before you submit; prepare a business plan; analyze your organization for grant competitive qualities; prepare research grants; help with 501(c)(3) applications for nonprofits; and more. Investing in the right grant writer could result in a financial win for your organization. Generally no licenses or certificates are required to be a good grant writer, but you may want to find a grant writer who has been certified (not just received a certificate of completion) by a reputable organization such as the Grant Professionals Certification Institute. Qualities to look for in a good grant writer include:

  • Proven success writing winning grants, especially in your target area.
  • Strong writing skills.
  • Strong math skills and demonstrated proficiency with budgeting.
  • Careful attention to detail — brilliant grant proposals may be rejected just for formatting errors, so you want someone who follows instructions explicitly.
  • Expertise in your target area.
  • Punctuality and good communication skills.

How much does a grant writer cost?

Hiring a grant writer can give you a competitive edge when applying for financial grants for your business or nonprofit organization, or as an individual. The cost to hire a grant writer can vary depending on their academic background, areas of expertise, previous grant writing success and years of experience. According to the Grant Professionals Association, grant writers should be paid hourly or by flat fee. It is unethical for a grant writer to accept a commission or percentage compensation of grant monies received. They can, however, be awarded bonuses in line with the hiring company’s prevailing practices. Here are some examples of average grant writing fees:

  • Hourly rate for grant writers with less experience or fewer grants awarded: $25-$35 per hour.
  • Hourly rate for grant writers with some degree of success: $35-$75 per hour.
  • Hourly rate for grant writers with proven success winning large grants: $75-$150 or more per hour.
  • For a smaller grant, the writer may charge a flat fee of $200-$500 for preparation and submission.

Pricing may also vary based on the complexity of the grant application. A federal grant that requires pages of research, budgets and a business plan may take more than 30 hours to prepare. For a high-level grant writer who charges $100 per hour, this means $3,000 or more in grant writing fees.

Most grant writers will provide you with a total cost estimate before agreeing to the work. You may be required to pay a deposit up front, or the grant writer may work from a retainer. Often, seasoned grant writers pay for themselves in the long run by writing successful grants.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
