Juan was very responsive to communications on Thumbtack and by phone, and he did a great job pruning our large magnolia tree. We would definitely hire him again.

Working with Jon Cunningham (Tree Monkey) was a great experience. Jon scheduled an estimate for the pruning of our two trees soon after he was contacted. His continual responsiveness amazed me really...the experience was a little like going back in time, in a good way! Jon's bid was fair, and as we are seniors about to invest in a new roof, he agreed to a senior discount so that we could better afford both jobs. Jon and his friendly efficient crew were on time and proceeded to do a beautiful job of trimming our magnolia and mulberry. They responsibly moved anything in their way and cleaned up impeccably - over and above the mess created by the pruning. I really appreciated the help all provided. I wish that every home maintenance project was as pleasant and efficient was working with Jon and his crew. I would not hesitate to refer him to others and will contact him again in the future.

We found CRC through thumbtack when we posted a yard clean up project (weeding, pruning and mowing). Carlos came out to look at the area of work and gave us a great quote. We were then scheduled in within a few days. CRC did a fantastic and thorough job and we couldn't be happier with the work. Our yard looks great!

Vin did an excellent job! He mowed the lawn, pruned the garden, and tidied up the greenery both in front of the house and in the backyard voluntarily without my asking. We are very very happy!

Did an outstanding job view pruning for me at Carmel Valley Ranch. They did everything I asked and weren't afraid to take down some bigger limbs that previous tree trimmers wouldn't do. I highly recommend them.

Overgrown fig tree with ivy growing all over it! Jean Davila came right away, gave me a reasonable quote and set up a convenient time. His crew showed up on time, were polite, fast & efficient. They cleaned up perfectly. They do even more than tree work, too! Next I'll also hire them for some serious bush pruning.

This past February I looked out at the yard and realized the fruit trees needed pruning pretty much immediately. It'd been a few years since I last had it done, and our trees are numerous and large. His crew worked on our plum, almond, ginormous fig, and two-story apricot. Oscar came out and gave me a very fair estimate. For extra, I could've had him take away the debris, but I don't mind having the city pick up our yard waste. He was able to get his crew out just a week or so later. The trees had at least six to eight feet removed to bring them back to manageable height, and they've been growing out for almost four months now. They look great, and I'm still going to get a good harvest from the apricot and fig despite the big pruning. I'm really impressed with what look like strategic cuts, allowing the trees to fill out to a beautiful, healthy shape. Oscar's crew also did a great job of cleaning up and taking everything out to the street. They even cut the large branches further down to a size the city's hauler can easily handle. The pile at the end of my driveway was as neat as an SUV-sized mound of hacked up trees can be. In short, Oscar's Expert Tree Service came out quickly and did a great job. I'll definitely use them again.

Agustin Beas completed his first time with us on April 4. He trimmed, pruned, mowed and edged and did exceptional work. He took about 3 hours and the clean up was impeccable. He will now come every 2 weeks to mow our small back lawn and do trimming only when necessary and do anything else I might ask like fix a sprinkler head in our front yard etc.

I contacted Juan for an estimate on cleaning out my over grown front and back yards (including; weeding, pruning, trimming and the removal removal of about 1000 lbs. of old bricks and slate). He maintained a very professional demeanor during his visit to my house and quoted me what I considered a very competitive rate for the work to be done. The work was completed very efficiently and therefore quickly. I was amazed by the speed at which they worked and how clean my property looked when they were done. I will use them again in the future, and I will highly recommend they service to others.

I called BridgeWood Tree Care on the referral of a friend of mine and was very impressed with Hudson's tree knowledge. I am a horticulturist and usually cringe when I see people with chain saws "pruning" trees as they often do not know what they are doing. I had no qualms with BridgeWood. Hudson first did a very thorough tour of my heavily planted yard and offered professional insight on the health of my trees and shrubs and how the correct pruning would improve them. His crew was also professional and knowledgeable, they took care not to damage any plants in my yard. The result is beautiful! BridgeWood Tree Care will be the only company I trust with my garden! Tom did a great job of drawing up plans and selecting plants for a complete re-do of our front and rear yards. He now comes twice a year to prune and "touch-up" areas that need it. Tom is on time and easy to work with....a great resource for the Peninsula homeowner!

Sabino —Mountain View Tree Service —is my “go to” for all my tree and pruning needs. I have been a customer for several years. I am very pleased with the professional timely service. From saving my 50 year old Liquid Ambers by properly pruning them—the remaining two on my circle —to propping up my Lemon tree ASAP after a storm—Sabino gets the job done! As well as my pear trees, photinia, maple trees and crab trees. He is always honest about the needs of my trees—what needs to be done now and what can wait. I recommend him to friends and neighbors. When my elderly neighbors tree fell, Sabino was there immediately! They were impressed too! And they appreciated the fair cost and good value.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to trim a tree?

The national price range for tree trimming is $270-$450. Tree trimming is often done by a professional arborist who is trained to safely trim and prune trees for both the health of the tree and the safety of the residents and their property. Trying to do your own tree trimming is not advisable unless you have the proper know-how. Tree trimming companies may charge an hourly rate for their services. The hourly rate may be higher or lower for different trees to reflect the relative safety measures, skill, equipment or people power needed to handle the job. For this reason, most tree services provide free estimates.

One example of an hourly rate for professional tree trimming services is $150 per hour. Costs may be under $100 or could be higher than $300 per hour, depending on variables such as proximity to buildings, health of the tree, height and diameter of the tree, and type of tree trimming desired. Geography and regional cost of living and regional costs to do business will also play a role in your tree removal costs.

How much does it cost to remove a tree stump?

Once you have a tree cut down, you’ll probably want to remove the tree stump as well. You may want the stump removed for aesthetics, the tree stump could be diseased, you might want to prevent regrowth, or you may find the roots are causing problems and need to be removed. Tree removal costs don’t always include the cost to grind out or dig out a tree stump after the tree has been felled and the trunk removed. The national average cost for stump removal ranges from $150 to $200. There are two main methods for dealing with tree stumps. In grinding, pros use a chipping machine to grind away the above-level tree stump until it sits just below the soil surface. Tree stump removal entails lifting the entire root ball of a tree out of the soil. Removing the stump will leave a hole in the ground and also take more time, labor and money than stump grinding. Here are some examples of average tree stump removal costs:

  • Stump grinding: $2-$4 per inch.
  • Tree stump removal: average of $60-$350.

The final price will depend on the stump’s size, condition, location and condition of the soil around it.

How much does it cost to remove a fallen tree?

If you need to have a tree cut down, have you planned what will happen next? Arborists often charge an additional fee to quarter and remove the fallen tree from your property, so anticipate this as part of your tree removal costs. You can elect to have the wood cut for use in your fireplace, or you may prefer to have it hauled away completely.

Tree removal costs may vary based on the height and the width of the felled tree. Size affects the labor required for removal, which will be reflected in the cost. For example, a tree service company may charge an additional $100-$120 to haul away the pieces of a felled tree. The service may cost as little as $75 in some regions and more than $150 in others. Regional labor rates, the cost of living and the cost to do business in your area will be reflected in your tree removal cost.

How much does it cost to cut a tree down?

When you’re ready to have a tree on your property come down, it’s time to call an arborist. The national average price range for tree-trimming costs is $270-$450. Tree removal costs can vary based on the height, diameter, location and health of the tree, and on whether you want to remove the stump. Height plays a major role in tree removal costs. Small trees, no more than 30 feet tall, are usually thinner in diameter and easier and safer for an arborist to manage. Removal of a small tree can cost anywhere from under $150 to over $450. Removal of medium-height trees, from 30 feet to 60 feet tall, could cost anywhere between $150 and $850 or more. Tall trees, typically 60 feet to 80 feet tall, may start at $500 or cost more than $1,000 to cut down. As the height and diameter increase, so does the cost.

Location is critical, too. Removing a tree in an open space is quicker and presents fewer obstacles than removing a tree that is growing flush to your house. Arborists can assess your tree and provide you with quotes based on the variables involved. For example, removing a medium-size hackberry tree that was growing too close to a home — the roots were damaging the home’s foundation — cost $1,500. This price included rope-down, house protection, tree quartering and stacking, and stump removal.

How much does it cost to cut down a massive tree?

If you have to remove a big, beautiful tree from your property, you’ll definitely need an arborist. Cutting down a massive tree without the proper tools or training can lead to major property damage or injury. A huge tree may need to be removed if it is diseased or dying and poses a safety risk, has suffered a blow from a storm and isn’t safe, or is growing into your home, your home’s foundation, your septic system, or your power lines. Removal costs for such large trees will depend on the tree’s height, diameter, and relative safety and accessibility, as well as whether you also need the felled tree and stump removed. The bare minimum for removal of a tree over 75 or 80 feet would be $1,000. This may not include tree quartering and removal or stump grinding. Stump grinding ranges on average from $2 to $4 per inch of the stump’s diameter. There is no set price as each situation is unique, so it’s always best to have an arborist give you a quote and detail exactly which services are included in the price.
