Recently I just had a wedding and was privileged to have Mayra and her team be in charge of my moms' as well as my hair and makeup. Mayra did an AMAZING job. When people saw me on that day, they all aspired for taking photos with me. I looked amazing in the photos---I don't normally do, but with the makeup on, I looked superb --- and the moms looked amazing in them. My mom got so many compliments from her coworkers; it was very exciting for her. My makeup stayed on with no trouble all day long, and was told that I need no retouch since Mayra uses high-quality makeup. My mom and I loved her work and would like to stay in touch with her for future events, and possibly makeup lessons! Mayra was amiable and helpful the whole way through. I didn't know much about makeup products or the techniques of applying makeup. She taught me tricks and basics as she was doing my makeup during my bridal consultation, and she answered all the questions I asked. She was attentive to details and needs, accommodated to clients' preference but also provided professional opinion. She was both very knowledgeable and well-equipped, and she can handle all skin type and skin color. I had a wonderful experience and I think having known her was a wonderful gift. I would definitely recommend her!

It was amazing to have Pastor John perform our wedding, especially since he has been a good family friend of my parents for years. He helped make the process, especially for the father of the bride, much smoother by reassuring all parties to follow his lead. He delivered exactly what my husband and I had requested, a short, but intimate ceremony that brought everyone to tears. We cannot thank Pastor John enough for his exceptional professionalism and friendship on our special day!

We hired Sybex Studio for our wedding couple months ago and now hired them again for Thanksgiving party. We were really impressed with their service and reasonable price. We spoke to different vendors and Ruben and his team were very friendly, helpful and knowledgeable about their job. We recommend Sybex Studio to anyone looking for event photography.

Joe was our officiant. And we love him. He was professional. Because of that we got our mind freed up for the ceremony, but focused on other things. He met with us and let us talk about our story. I liked the way he introduced us in the ceremony. He got what I want to say, and even better! Joe did the follow-up email, rehearsal, and after-wedding follow-up. We would really recommend him!

Shannon was a great entertainer for my friend's wedding. He brought his karaoke setup and really livened up the party. He was not expensive at all, though he did charge me an installation fee at the last moment so make sure to ask him about that. The DJ is also a very kind person we talked with him a bit before he packed up and left.

Liv was absolutely wonderful! From our first phone conversation to the day of, her personality/approach was warm and open. We hired her for hair and make-up for three family members in our wedding (mothers of the brides and sister of the bride), and they all looked great. She brought great energy to our day and the whole process was fun and easy. We wouldn't hesitate to hire her again and we definitely recommend her.

DJ TJ did a great job at my wedding a few weeks ago. He was very approachable and responsive. He was great about adapting his style to what we liked. And was open to talking about my vision for the wedding. He was willing to meet me at the venue and answered all of my questions (and I had a lot!)..over the course of a few months. My only complaint was that there were a few moments during the wedding when there were long pauses before the music started..such as during the recessional and for the first dance. Which was very awkward for me. But my guests said they hardly noticed. Overall I would say I was very pleased with his work and his price was great as well.

This review is long overdue as Nic captured my wedding in October 2016. From the first day we spoke I knew he was the guy for me. He was flexible and willing to work with me and my budget to achieve the video I wanted. Then when we finally met it was even better! He's a great guy and our personalities meshed well together. He did an outstanding job capturing the day AND an even better job creating the video that I've always wanted. Thank you so much Nic!!

Vani was easy to work with and very responsive by email/text and phone. I would definitely work with her in the future as well as recommend her to my friends. Her prices were competitive and the arrangements we ordered for the wedding looked fabulous. She created exactly what I had envisioned and the final product was great.

My partner and I knew we only wanted a limited amount at our wedding, and Beth was happy to work with our vision. I was impressed with the bouquets she created with our color palette (I even dried mine so I'll have it forever) and she made boutonnieres out of hops for the guys. She even had a chuppah that we were able to rent, so we didn't have to worry about setup. I would definitely recommend Beth for any event, big or small.

Very high quality work! Kavya did a great job for our pre-wedding photoshoot. We shot at 2 locations in the golden hours (morning and evening). She helped us in choosing the locations and outfits, and brought some cool props as well! She was very prompt in replying to our queries, and gave us the final photographs in a timely way. The photos looked awesome. We used them at many places in our wedding (even had some put up poster-size at the venue!)

Amanda was amazing! She photographed our small wedding in Carmel Valley this past Halloween. Before our event, I sat down with her and we discussed which types of shots I'd like her to capture: getting ready, walking down the aisle with my dad, the first kiss, family photos, dancing, photos around the gorgeous property, eating and celebrating with family. She took the time to edit each photo, individually, making each one the best they could be. I appreciate the time she took to make us feel comfortable, and when she took direction, as we are not models and didn't necessarily know how to stand/act. The moments she captured were perfect and we will cherish them forever. Thanks again Amanda!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a videographer and what do they do?

A videographer professionally films weddings and other events and edits the footage to create film keepsakes or marketing materials for their clients. Wedding videographers record all the key elements of your wedding day, ceremony and reception, and then edit the hours of film during post-production to make a wedding video, social media highlight reels, and any other film features you choose. Wedding videography captures, in live action, your vows, the cake-cutting, the first dance, reception toasts, the decor, the guests and all the details of your day. Many wedding videographers also interview guests (based on an interview list provided by the couple) and incorporate the recorded responses into the wedding video. Event videography typically costs less than wedding videography, as events are shorter with less detail. The national average cost for event videography is $500-$760, while the national average cost for wedding videography is $990-$1,260. A videographer usually does not need to be licensed, but it is important to confirm they have insurance and good standing in the business community, as well as good client reviews. A great majority of the work happens during post-production. The pros watch and blend together the hours of footage they took (sometimes from multiple cameras) to capture the story of your wedding day or event.

What is a wedding planner?

A wedding planner is a professional service provider whose job it is to organize and execute all the details of a couple’s wedding. A wedding planner can be contracted at any stage in the wedding planning process to help to any degree the couple is willing to pay for. Wedding planning is similar to event planning in that a planning team handles the coordination of multiple wedding elements including catering, venue, guests, entertainment, decor, transportation and more. Anyone who has ever been involved in a wedding can confirm that wedding planning is hard work. Experience brings wisdom when it comes to avoiding or resolving day-of challenges. There is no legal regulatory body that oversees or certifies wedding planning as an industry. Anyone who chooses can call themselves a wedding planner. When looking for a wedding planner, be sure to read reviews, and make smart hiring decisions by asking about licenses and insurance.

How do you choose a wedding videographer?

A wedding videographer will create a lifetime memory for you from edited video footage of your wedding day, ceremony and reception. Choosing a wedding videographer starts with looking online at portfolios of their past work. There’s no need to talk to anyone unless you love what you see. Next, make sure they have good reviews and past client experience; don’t be shy about asking for references if there aren’t any posted online. When you find someone who has a style you love, ask if they are available on your wedding day. If so, it’s time to talk pricing. Be clear about your maximum budget, and ask what kind of packages they offer. Pricing will depend on the number of crew needed for filming, the hours they are required to be onsite, post-production editing, and the length of the final product. Talk with several wedding videographers to get a feel for what prices are like in your region. Nationally, the average cost for wedding videography ranges between $990 and $1,260 per event. Once you agree on a product and have a plan, get everything in a written and signed contract. Clearly state the details of what is expected for your wedding day and from the final product. Be prepared to pay a deposit to reserve their services for the day, then pay the remainder upon receiving the video.

What should you ask your wedding videographer before hiring?

Finding the perfect wedding videographer doesn’t have to be stressful. Asking a few key questions upfront will help you find the right fit for your big day. Before talking with wedding videographers, research their work online. Look at their websites, business profiles and social media, and see what their finished wedding videos look like. If the style fits what you’re envisioning, it’s time to reach out. During initial contact, make sure you get along with the person. This is important since they’ll be interacting with you and your guests.

Your first question should be about their availability; there’s no point in going further if they’re booked on your wedding day. Ask to see references if they’re not readily available online. Next, it’s time to talk about money. Ask how they determine rates or what kind of packages they offer. When you settle on a rate and the services you want, make sure to have a written contract that outlines everything, including cost, length of time they film, what post-production will include, and when you can expect to receive the edited project.

How much does it cost for a photographer for a wedding?

Finding the right wedding photographer can make a big difference for your ceremony. Nationally, the average wedding photographer’s price ranges from $800 to $1,000, but costs can be much higher in areas like Chicago, New York or Los Angeles where some couples spend $2,000 to $5,000 or more for the photographer they want. Factors that can affect your wedding photographer prices include the photographer’s reputation and experience. Heavy hitters can command top rates, especially during wedding-season weekends. Day of the week also affects your cost. You may get a $200 discount on wedding photographer prices if you get married on a Friday in November rather than a Saturday in June. Time onsite is also an important cost factor. Hiring a photographer to snap photos from the moment you wake up until after last call at the reception is going to cost more than five hours of pictures during the day. Multiple photographers, special lighting, and videography will also increase your costs. Ultimately you want to find someone who has a style you love and can provide the number of edited shots you want for a price you can handle. Learn more about hiring a wedding photographer.
