I needed a caterer for my dad's funeral reception. Spoke to other caterers but Carolina of Gourmet Lover's Catering was the only one who gave her condolences, this meant a lot to me. The full service presentation was tasteful, the food delicious and reasonably priced. There were no exta added on fees like the other caterers. I highly recommend Gourmet Lover's Catering, Boris & Carolina are a wonderful team and you will not be disappointed.

I hired Mark for a dinner for 30 on the deck of our Del Mar beach house for the evening of July 3rd. These were our closest friends and family. Mark was expecting to arrive at 2:45 to prepare for 5 PM cocktails and appetizers. Awful holiday traffic from LA down and the Del Mar Fair resulted in Mark and his team not arriving till 5:20 (NOT HIS FAULT, JUST AWFUL TRAFFIC). With absolutely no prep time, with modest kitchen and cooking resources since this is a beach house, Mark and team proceeded to treat us to EXTRAORDINARY dishes and cocktails. The seared fois gras was out of this world. The tenderloin, lobster and salmon all wonderful. All served under the stars, on the beach, with the greatest friends and family enjoying a special evening. Everyone left in awe of Mark's work and his demeanor. Only a true professional could have pulled off what he pulled off given the hurdles he faced. He surpassed my expectations, and I am grateful that he shared his genius with our group. It will be a night no one will forget. Thank you Mark! BTW - I found him through Thumbtack.

The Pit Stop BBQ was great! The employees really LOVED and enjoyed the food. Their services were also wonderful. We've had caterers that take up to two hours to serve 150 people. Pam and her crew were done in less than an hour. I recommend The Pit Stop and am looking forward to hiring Pam again in the near future!

Ms. Johnson did an amazing job catering my event, hosted at St. Vincent de Paul, Council of Los Angeles Thrift Store for the SDSA General Membership Meeting, of 100 people with a buffet, drinks, hors d'oeuvre, and recyclable cutlery. Ms. Johnson helped me determine the best menu for my clients and type of event to make specific to my needs and all within my budget! Her staff was friendly, helpful, and self sufficient. I highly recommend Super Food for Super People for your next corporate event!

Alexis catered our annual holiday corporate party in our home for 30 people. Everything was perfect. She has an extensive menu to choose from. The passed appetizers were very delicious - potato chorizo empanadas, beef sliders, and spicy tuna krisps. The holiday menu was outstanding - hand-carved prime rib, turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, sautéed green beans, field green salad with pomegranate, goat cheese and candied pecans. She also provided a fabulous dessert bar with mini fruit tarts, cheese cakes, brownies, Christmas cookies, and flan. Her presentation was beautiful with a beautiful gingerbread house that I got to keep. Most impressive was her excellent servers who helped to set up our tables, decorate the tables, prepare the food and serve. They also served cocktails and prepared a wonderful signature holiday drink. They arrived on time and left my kitchen in immaculate condition. Put away every dish, cleaned the ovens, stove and mopped the floor. They were so professional and helpful. Our guests loved the food. We've had holiday parties at very nice restaurants the past 12 years but everyone agreed this was the best party because of the food and service they received from Alexis and her team. I would not hesitate to hire Alexis for another event. She is fantastic. Thank you Alexis!

Work quality - phenomenal Professionalism - fantastic Responsiveness - Joanna couldn't have been more responsive if she tried. Value- heck yes! Do you know how pricey mobile bartending and catering vendors can be in LA? This company is a steal considering the amount of collaboration and quality of service your receive. Punctuality - On time, super fast in setting up, even faster tearing down. I highly recommend this vendor. I planned an entire event from another state and Joanna made me feel like I had nothing to worry about on her end. Will work with her again for sure.

I left this review on the Knot.com and thought I would repeat this here. We loved having Feast as our caterer for our wedding and highly recommend them. "For our wedding we were connected with Marcus and Feast Catering through a good friend who used to work at the Annenberg Beach House. What a great recommendation! Marcus sat down with us and was flexible in working with our budget. We really appreciated this. We were able to do a tasting with him, and Marcus was very receptive to feedback. We asked for an Asian influence for the menu and Marcus and his team pulled it off beautifully and creatively. The food was delicious. They arranged a beautiful beet salad that looked great in all the photos. We had soju coconut cocktails. The wines were good too. My niece said it was her favorite wedding food ever - Marcus was so kind to ask if we wanted a special meal for the few children that were attending. They had mac n' cheese, chicken nuggets - their favorites! Marcus managed his staff well, too. They decorated the tables nicely with the linens and Feast arranged the heat lamps and all the rentals for us. All of the staff were courteous and friendly - great service. Feast assigned a special person to look out for us as the bride and groom and make sure that we had all that we wanted - seconds on the buffet, an extra piece of wedding cake, another cocktail, anything. Thank you so much, Marcus!"

ABSOLUTELY AMAZING!! I have hired other caterers in the past, but none of them come close the experience I had with Chef Lofthouse and his team. Chef Lofthouse created a spectacular menu and it was delicious to eat. He and his team took care of all of the planning and set-up for the event. They served perfectly on time, and gave me and my guests such great service, that my guests are still emailing me to get Chef Lofthouse's phone number. You are missing out if you don't have him cater your party!

Carolyn is so easy to work with. Planning parties, family gatherings, and/or holiday festivities can be very stressful, and that’s when you need someone like Carolyn to help you. I’ve had the pleasure of working with her for many parties and her catering have not disappointed me yet. The only reason I didn’t rank her perfect is because I’ve yet tasted all of her specialities. Best of luck Chef LaTay. Valerie

Iris did so much for us to make this our best holiday event to date. It was a breeze on my part, she did all of the planning, finding the DJ and venue. We worked together on menu items, and were able to taste test in advance. The salmon was amazing, as was the tri-tip. Iris is also a truly sweet person, and I enjoyed planning this event with her very much. She was very accommodating, and delivered as promised. Thank you! I would highly recommend her for your event planning.

Peggy C. I had tried Heather’s Savory Artichoke Heart, Crispy Sage, Caramelized Onion and Italian Cheese Quiche—and knew it was good; along with her very special (& somewhat decadent) Savory Caramelized Vidalia Onion Cheesecake_Spread, so I ordered both for the holidays. They were made with love and care and brought to my door. I loved having them on hand—as you know there are always more mouths to feed around the holidays! The care and pride she takes in her work really shows. The dip/spread is a real treat—very elegant and rich. The quiche is unlike any we’ve ever had and is truly delicious. I would highly recommend her and her cooking for anyone’s event or home.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good caterer?

Reviews, interviews and menu tastings will help you find the right catering choice for your big day. Start by screening possible wedding caterers based on past reviews. If a caterer you are interested in has a review that concerns you, ask them about it; how they respond will be very telling. Next, ask about their availability for your wedding date.

If the wedding caterer is available on your date, it’s time to talk about menus and prices. Be clear about what your maximum budget is find out what choices this will allow you. Caterers may custom-create a menu for your event, or they may have menu templates within different price ranges that can guide your decision. A clear budget gives the caterer clear parameters within which to work and offer creative suggestions. Schedule a menu tasting to confirm you love your wedding menu. Once you have a menu and date, and have paid a deposit to reserve the caterer’s services, confirm additional details including when the food will be delivered to the site, what kind of service will be provided, how many servers will be onsite and for how long, and who is responsible for setup and cleanup. The more specific your contract, the fewer worries you’ll have on your wedding day. Get more smart hiring tips here.

Do you tip a wedding caterer?

Tipping 15 percent to 20 percent on a $3,000 catering bill can feel daunting — especially in light of all the other costs of throwing a wedding — but tipping your wedding caterer is standard practice. Be sure to ask your caterer about their specific policies. Many catering companies include gratuity as a line item on their bill. If tipping is not automatically included in your total, a good approach is to tip all the people involved the day of the event rather than paying one lump sum to the catering company. For each server and bartender, you can tip $20-$50, depending on how long they were onsite and whether they did exceptional work. You can also tip the chef; experts suggest $50. It’s also a good idea to tip the catering manager, the point-of-contact person who keeps the catering service running smoothly the day of your wedding, ensures all the food looks beautiful and is plentiful, and resolves any mishaps. Industry pros recommend tipping the catering manager $100-$200. If gratuity is not included and you’re tipping individuals, set aside $200-$500 in cash to be safe.

How much does wedding catering cost per person?

Wedding catering costs will always vary based on the number of guests you’re inviting, the menu you want to serve, and the way the food will be served to your guests. As you interview wedding catering companies, you’ll be presented with a cost per person for various menus. On the low end, wedding catering may cost approximately $15-$18 per person. This would include prepared food only, with no setup or service of any kind. The starting price for a simple buffet meal with minimal service typically averages $22 per person. Opting for the same menu with all organic ingredients could raise your costs to about $33 per person. A moderately upscale menu (finer ingredients, more elaborate presentation) could range from $24 to $34 per person. High-end wedding catering cost truly has no limit. Lobster, filet mignon, specialty seafood, organic ingredients — menu choices like these can boost your cost per person up to $150 and more.

How much does it cost to hire a caterer?

Catering prices depend mainly on how fancy you want the food and service to be and how many guests you’ll have. When you’re first looking to hire a caterer for your event, consider how many guests you’ll have and your total food and drink budget. The national average for event catering is $340, but catering prices can range into the thousands depending on your menu, guest count, and service.

Event catering is a broad term that covers everything from fully prepared, ready-to-eat food that the hosts plate and serve themselves to full-service, multicourse meals, including rental of linens, glassware and other items, with service staff organized by the catering company. Usually a caterer will determine cost based on the type of event you’re having, how many guests will attend, the level of service you desire, and what type of menu you’d like to have. For example, if you have a set catering budget, say $1,500, and you plan to have 50 people attend, that means you have $30 per person for food. If you have the same budget with 100 people, you have $15 per person for food. In this way, the number of people you want to attend your event and the level of food you want to serve them determines how much catering will cost.

What should you look for in a caterer?

A delicious meal is a critical element of a successful wedding, with happy guests fondly remembering your fabulous wedding food. The right caterer for you will be:

  • Available: Even the best caterer is no good if they aren’t available on your wedding date. Ask early before you get your heart set on someone.
  • Affordable for you: Find a caterer that you can afford. Having a spending plan ahead of time will mean you won’t overspend on food.
  • A good personality fit: Wedding planning is stressful, so work with someone that you can get along with and communicate with easily.
  • Experienced and recommended: Ensure the company has a proven track record with events of your size and the references to back it up.
  • Transparent about money: Steer clear of shady pricing. Find a caterer who is very clear about costs and is happy to talk you through budgets and pricing options.
  • Transparent about food: Find someone who is clear about where they source their food from and where it is prepared.
