Ricardo filled the large hole in my drywall that I hired him for, and seeing that there was a smaller one nearby...he filled in that one, too, without my asking - what a pleasant surprise!

Keith was absolutely amazing from start to finish. He was prompt with a quote and all communication with us. He worked quickly and was flexible around our timing, dogs, belongings, etc. On top of that, he came in well under what he estimated for a an unbelievable price. We love our new interior color and would happily recommend him to anyone looking for paint and general contractor help.

Matthew Kelly is hardworking and honest. He strives to make the job go as well as possible. After other contractors said no or did not return my calls, he responded quickly on the weekend, and he completed the job in a timely manner. Matthew's operation is lean and responsive. He is pleasant to work with and has my recommendation.

Hector and Francisco are not just amazing professional painters, they are lifesavers. Renovating our condo has taken so long and been so expensive that we were going to wait on new baseboards and do most of the painting ourselves. I contacted Hector just about painting the ceiling and texturing a couple places that had been newly dry walled during renovations. But after seeing Hector and Francisco work, their neat careful painting and having gotten such a reasonable bid, we ended up with freshly painted ceilings, new baseboards all freshly painted, and newly painted walls. And the texturing job, which I know is not easy was flawless - because of the renovation, there were places it needed to be redone, places where the drywall mud wasn’t even, and a wall niche that was cut out but not much more. Hector and Francisco did a beautiful job - you could tell they have pride in their work. I cannot believe I found people so good, so pleasant, so professional. I’ll hire Hector anytime I have painting to be done. And I recommend him highly! Thanks to Hector and Francisco, I have a home I can live in and be proud of.

I met Renato through my realtor. He made several repairs for me in the bathroom which included drywall. Did a fantastic job painting most of the house both upstairs and down. I also asked him to do a few repairs that would have been difficult for most, but Renato took care of them easily. He is my new best friend! I would highly recommend Renato

Eduardo and Jose were phenomenal, period. They painted our home in the Inner Sunset, and did a spectacular job. I am a very picky diva, and I am so very happy - thrilled - with their work. Eduardo and Jose sourced the scaffolding and even found us a roofer on very short notice when we agreed the roofing over our bay windows was in very poor condition. There were things I wanted - color and paint type and finish type - and Jose collaborated with me on everything. He did not hesitate to explain some technical elements of which I was unaware. I have had a lot of experience with painters, and I am adamant about using Benjamin Moore paint only. I have had instances where the painters swap in cheap paint even though I have specified exactly what I want. (It is absolutely imperative to use high quality paint or one is simply wasting money on labor.) Well, Eduardo and Jose are also firm believers in Benjamin Moore products, so it was a very happy collaboration!! Everything was very reasonable priced and transparent. The prep work was outstanding. This is a highly professional team, but also very friendly. Do not hesitate to hire them! I plan to ask for more services in the future! See photos below, the tan and brown on the left is the before photo, the photo on the right in pearl grey, deep brown, and blue lake is the after photo. The photos really do not do the house justice... the lustre and richness of the new paint over properly prepared surfaces - it is just gorgeous. Thank you so much, Eduardo and Jose!

I feel very lucky to have connected with Tom. It's a crap shoot sometimes finding the right person to do the right job. Tom is a former contractor and he's the one you want for any carpentry type jobs. We had a gazebo with the top boards rotting away and Tom replaced them all with new redwood boards without disturbing the surrounding plants and he added some nice railings. He also put up an extension to our fence and as a bonus he fixed our gate. Thank you Tom! All these five star reviews are the REAL thing.

Juan remodeled our unfinished attic space (about 700+ sq ft) from top to bottom and turned it into a new office studio. He laid out the framework, ran electrical wires, put up insulation and drywall, painted and stained, added window trim, installed hardwood flooring and baseboards, and added storage cabinets. He was able to finish our attic in three weeks, and for a very reasonable price. He is a very hard worker, and really creative with his solutions. He always had helpful advice for me when I wasn't sure what decisions to make. He is now our go to contractor when we need work done around the house. I highly recommend him for his work quality, professional etiquette, and ease of communication. I am very happy with the work he is done, and can't wait to work with him again.

Andrew was quick to move forward on our project--I expected it to take much longer--and he took the initiative to find great people to supplement his skills so I didn't have to. His own work is top notch and he held other contractors to his high standards. He's also just a really nice guy to work with--even cleans up at the end of each day! I'd hire him again in a heartbeat.

I was helping my daughter find a contractor for siding replacement. Kris contacted me soon after my request for quotes. I asked him questions more than once, since my daughter kept coming up with more. Kris was very responsive, answering the questions quickly and professionally. Even though my daughter decided on another contractor, you can't not notice an obvious regard for the customer that will more than likely be reflected in his work.

I wanted to expand my driveway by 100 square feet. I talked to a few contractors and some came out and gave a bid and others blew me off. Mario was different from the rest. He set up an appointment with me for the next day and he showed up on time. He quoted me a price which I eventually accepted. We set a date for him to do the work. He called me and said he could do it a day earlier. I said great. He completed the job in two days and it looks great. His workmanship was very good. He took out 6" of dirt, put in 1-2" of gravel and pour 4-5" of concrete. He matched the expansion joints up with the existing driveway and it looks great. I would heartily recommend Mario. From my experience I would say he is honest, trustworthy with high integrity.

Mike's firm was recommended by one of our family members, who used Mike in the past. I was very pleased with his service from the beginning till completion of the project. Mike showed up on time at our house to viewing the scope of work and the price proposal was provided to us a day after. All was done in professional manner. His proposal was in par with other contractors, and because of family recommendation I decided to go with Mike. The painting was done while we were at work, so I cannot comment on the work process, but the final product exceeded our expectations. All the walls were patched to cover any holes, indentations and after paint application looked like new. Baseboards were sanded down lightly to give a fresh look as well. Mike's skills at making straight lines at the ceiling and trim pieces are amazing. Overall very happy, and I will be looking forward to see Mike again when another painting project will be necessary.

Giving a thumbs up to Fatos for his work remodeling and extending an outside deck. He works by the hour with direct reimbursement for materials. His workmanship is top notch and I am very satisfied with the end product His initial estimate of about two weeks for this project was about right. I had the initial estimated quantity of materials delivered and paid for, then he got the rest ad-hoc as needed for which I reimbursed him. I've done plenty of construction myself, both contracting and with a hammer. But I wanted this done quickly and didn't have the time myself (mom's house in Napa) as I don't live nearby. Was a little nervous about the hourly arrangement as this can remove incentive to get work done timely and pad the bill, especially as I couldn't be there constantly to oversee. Happy to say Fatos worked hard and honestly and I feel I got good value for the money. To be clear he is a handyman, not a licensed contractor. This means liability is on the customer and any potential dispute resolution can be murkey. With that said, I recommend him for your small to medium sized projects.

GreenRun remodeled a bathroom in my home in the summer of 2014 and just recently (June 2015) replaced the roof of my house. Rodney Jansen, the owner/contractor of GreenRun, is professional in the way in which he interacts with you as the customer. He is able to instill confidence without pressure. Rodney and his crew were punctual, courteous and, at the end of the workday, cleaned up the work site. I would wholeheartedly recommend GreenRun to family and friends. Hanna S.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is the difference between sheetrock and drywall?

People sometimes use the terms “sheetrock” and “drywall” interchangeably, but they are not exactly the same. Drywall is the industry term for prefabricated sheets of wall, while Sheetrock is the brand name of a type of drywall. Depending on what room is being built, your drywall installation pro will select different thicknesses or grades of drywall. Standard residential drywall is ½-inch thick. Garage walls adjacent to a living space are typically ⅝-inch thick and serve as a firewall. For a garage ceiling, most contractors will use firewall-grade drywall materials to keep your home as safe as possible.

Different types of drywall can be color-coded to indicate their purpose. Purple or green drywall boards are often mold-resistant (MR) and are applied where moisture tends to accumulate, such as in bathrooms and basements or behind tile backsplashes at sinks. These mold-resistant sheets have a fiberglass instead of a paper facing finish to prevent water absorption. Regular drywall is gray or white. The drywall industry is constantly adapting with technology to provide safer and more targeted materials. You can even install soundproofing drywall to help prevent noise transfer through rooms.

How much will it cost to fix a hole in the wall?

If you have a hole in your wall, don’t despair; drywall repair professionals can patch the hole and repaint the surface and no one will be the wiser. The cost to repair a drywall hole depends on the size of the surface area of the damage, the materials and labor required, and (for a minor repair) any minimum service fee the repair company may charge. The actual labor and drywall prices may be lower than the minimum service fee, but pros must ensure their business overhead costs are met when they go out on minor jobs. To help keep costs low once the pros get there, make sure you have the right paint on hand if you want them to do to a touch up after the repair is complete, so you don’t keep them wait (and charging you for their time) while you search in the garage. Here are two examples of average prices for smaller drywall repair jobs:

  • Approximate cost to repair a 5-foot crack in a wall: $125 (labor $75 and materials $50).
  • Approximate cost to repair a 3-foot ceiling crack: $150.

How much does it cost to put up drywall?

The national average cost to hire a drywall installation professional ranges $375-$1,500, depending on the job at hand and where you are in the country. Your drywall installation cost will often be lower if the professional is installing the drywall in a new construction with open access as opposed to a remodel. The square footage of the job, the amount of materials, and the labor required also determine drywall prices. According to drywall pros, materials costs can range from 15 percent to 50 percent of your total project cost, depending on the work you’re having done. Request several quotes from drywall installation companies to find the right fit for your construction project. The quotes may be based on the company’s standard cost per square foot or a calculation of the time estimated to complete the job plus the size of the job plus materials and any travel fees. For example, drywall installation for one or two standard-size rooms could cost $900-$1,500. The cost to hang and tape an outbuilding with approximately 40 drywall sheets at 75 cents per square foot could total $1,450, including 3.75 days of labor for the drywall crew.

How much does it cost to repair drywall?

The national average price range to repair drywall is $210-$300. Drywall prices can vary greatly depending on the size of the hole or crack that needs repair, the amount of materials required, and other factors. Cracks can appear at the seams in your drywall due to uncontrollable factors like your house settling or even minor earthquakes. Drywall, although sturdy, will break with enough impact, so if a dresser falls and crashes into a wall or your have a mishap hammering in nails for artwork, you could need drywall repair. Drywall repair professionals may have a minimum service fee of $100-$150 regardless of the size of the job. This ensures that their business expenses are met anytime they send their crew out to a job. Here are some additional examples of average drywall repair prices:

  • Sand and texture five wall patches: $200 (45 minutes of labor and $40 of materials).
  • Repair a 4x8 section of wall: $225 (labor $150 and materials $75).
  • Replace drywall in an entire bedroom: $1,500 (price varies depending on the number of windows, whether there’s metal trim, etc.).
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
