My daughter and her friend have met with John 3 times so far for SAT prep. They have been very happy with each session. The first session was diagnostic and the subsequent sessions have been spent discussing problems and techniques. John is very easy to work with. They do not feel bad when they make mistakes or do not understand a concept. We plan to do a total of 10 sessions before taking the SAT.

Met with John once or twice a week over the course of several months during my GMAT preparation. I started out with a 13th percentile quantitative score. After working with him I was able score in the 73rd percentile on my first official GMAT, exceeded my initial goal by scoring ABOVE a 700. I had no formal quantitative training or experience prior to studying; the last math class I took was as a sophomore in high school (a decade ago). Each time I met with John, he was able to go beyond simply correcting my mistakes. He clearly explained the overarching reasoning, strategy and logic behind a certain problem. This is something the video explanations in GMAT curriculum do not do as thoroughly as John. If you're looking for someone to discuss GMAT concepts with in a clear and intelligent way, I highly recommend him. I also studied using curriculum like Target Test Prep, but John helped me tremendously by working through the problems I struggled with step by step and identifying any weak spots in my quant skills. He understands the GMAT and is able to identify the kinds of questions that likely would or would not appear on the exam. Finally, John served as a strong source of moral support throughout a challenging three months of study atop a full time job. When I wanted to try a new curriculum or ask him about tricky questions via email, he would always offer thoughtful feedback in response. His responses were especially helpful when I scored low on practice exams; John's feedback always helped me put things in perspective and helped me get back up and try again. He was very flexible and willing to work with my schedule and make time when needed, often on short notice. In short, I couldn't have done it without him!

Monica helped my 11th-grade son prep for his statistics final after falling behind a bit on the coursework. She helped him catch up in a 2-hour session and he got an A! We are continuing to use Monica to prep for the SAT. My son likes her very much and I am impressed by her professionalism and warm personality. We are glad we found her!

Josh was an awesome SAT tutor for my son, increasing his scores 110 points in just a few weeks of tutoring. Prior to Josh, my son was enrolled in a commercial SAT prep course: 3 hours on Friday evenings and six hours on Saturdays along with 11 other students. My son did not respond well to the group setting. These sessions could not hold his attention, and it became a weekly battle to get him to go. After a few weeks, he quit the course and decided that individual tutoring would be a better option. Josh’s style of personalized attention offered my son the back and forth interaction he needed to maintain interest and motivation. He had a great depth of knowledge (Yale graduate), as well as a warm and personal demeanor. He took the time to understand my son’s individual style of learning and identified the areas with which he needed more assistance. In summary, my son benefitted greatly from Josh’s talents, and I would highly recommend him to anyone needing one-on-one and personalized attention.

My stepdaughter has been working with Sylvia for a few months now and we can really see a difference in her math and English (reading, writing, spelling, etc). My stepdaughter actually looks forward to her time with Sylvia, which is so important to us. Sylvia is very patient, personable and knowledgeable. My stepdaughter got very excited yesterday, after she found out that Sylvia is also fluent in Spanish because she would like to start working on that as well. I feel that we really lucked out with finding Sylvia. Soon, my other stepdaughter will be working with Sylvia to prep her for the SSAT!

Brian is a fantastic tutor! I really can't say enough good things about him. He is always well-prepared, thoughtful, and he really knows his stuff. He helped my daughter on the SAT so much. He really transformed the way she thought about and approached the test. He is an all around excellent tutor. He was never stumped by questions my daughter had. What impressed me the most about Brian is how knowledgeable he was on even the smallest grammar detail. I would highly recommend Brian to anyone looking to improve their SAT or ACT scores!

I had a lovely experience with MyGuru. They quickly found me a great GMAT tutor that would've cost me at least 2x as much at one if the big test prep companies, not to mention mine was probably better qualified. Overall easy and great experience!

We had a little trouble connecting with Alpha College Prep thru the Thumbtack interface. At our first meeting, Jennifer assessed my daughter's ACT Test readiness with a consult & partial practice test. She paired my HS junior with a great tutor who helped her prep for the test and continues to work with her on pre-calculus. The tutor, Robert, is excellent. Alpha College Prep impressed me as flexible and responsive to our student and her needs.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do I prepare for the GMAT?

If you’re thinking of enrolling in graduate school to earn your MBA, it’s time to start thinking about preparing for the Graduate Management Admissions Test (GMAT). Working with a GMAT tutor is for many people a wise investment to help you strengthen the academic areas you may be weak in and improving your overall test score. A GMAT prep tutor should teach you not only the kind of information you need to know for the test, but the best test-taking strategies. The GMAT tests you on four categories: quantitative, verbal, integrated reasoning, and an analytical writing assessment. Cramming is probably not going to give you good results for this standardized test; give yourself between two and six months to prepare, focusing on your most challenging areas first. Successful GMAT prep means planning ahead and studying thoroughly. Those students who reported studying under 75 hours were more likely to score 400 or lower on the test, while students who studied 121 hours or more were more likely to score 700 or higher on the test. Hiring a GMAT prep tutor can range in price from under $50 to over $200 per hour.

How long does it take to prepare for the GMAT?

Pros recommend planning to spend two to six months for GMAT prep. The test itself is only 3.5 hours long, but your score will have a major effect on what schools grant you admission. If you’d like to be considered for one of the top-tier schools, it’s recommended to score at least a 700. Your goals for your MBA can help drive your GMAT prep. GMAT tutors will guide your study plan and help analyze your strengths and weaknesses. GMAT tutors also offer professional guidance and insights on strategic GMAT test-taking. Avail yourself of free GMAT prep software that provides sample test questions for you to practice. The creators of the GMAT recommend creating a structured study plan detailing when you will study each day and what topics you will study during each session. Take into account what style of learning works best for you (solo study, one-on-one tutoring, group tutoring, study groups, prep courses) and proceed accordingly. The test is made up of these four categories, each with an allotted time:

    • Analytical writing assessment: 1 topic, 30 minutes.
    • Integrated reasoning: 12 questions, 30 minutes.
    • Quantitative: 37 questions, 75 minutes.
    • Verbal: 41 questions: 75 minutes.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
