"oh wow!!! Just had a 90 minute ashiatsu massage with Maya Nicholls on Saturday. Her new space is delightful - cozy and warm but full of light (literally and figuratively). She went over what ashiatsu was and what to expect, as I knew very little about it. I was surprised by how much I immediately loved it! She was very thorough in the massage too - I was thinking that she couldn't possibly do my feet, or forearms, hands, etc - but she did and it felt incredible! I melted into the table and felt that way for the rest of the day. I was in such a good mood, relaxed, happy, compassionate with my body. It was such a great day! I can't wait to go back!!!"

"I have had the privilege of having Kara as both a massage therapist and a yoga instructor. In both cases she pays attention to details. I have had dozens and dozens of massage therapists and in my opinion Kara has consistently given me the best massages. She seems to always intuitively know the correct pressure my muscles need and I think she has more pressure control in her elbows than most therapist have in their thumbs. And she works the areas I ask her to, as opposed to just doing a generic routine as I have found a lot of therapists do, even after asking. As a yoga instructor Kara has a detailed eye for correct asanas and was able to give me suggestions equal to my abilities. She was also more patient than other instructors about teaching her students to connect the breath to the poses. "

"Jamaica Galloway, in my professional opinion, is one of the most embodied and talented massage therapists I have ever worked with. As a massage therapist myself for over 18 years, I have received a tremendous amount of body work. It is hard to find a therapist like Jamaica that has the intuitive, body centered ability and skill to bring an extraordinary level of muscle and bone manipulation at a perfect level of depth and intensity while facilitating emotional de-stressing and a soulful rest all in 90 minutes. She is at the top of my list when I am able to schedule a massage for myself. I highly recommend her. Cyan Nathaniel Knobbs Occidental"

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is Thai massage?

Thai massage, also called Thai yoga massage, combines acupressure and assisted yoga postures. Thai massage is based on the flow of energy through the body and focuses on energy lines called “sen.” It doesn’t use oils or lotions and, instead of rubbing muscles, the massage therapist compresses, pulls, stretches and rocks the recipient’s body to promote the flow of energy through these sen. In this form of massage therapy, practitioners use their hands, knees, legs and feet to apply deep muscle compression and stretch the body. It’s often performed on a mat on the floor instead of on a massage table. Like most forms of massage, Thai massage is used to relieve stress, improve range of motion and enhance flexibility. Some people also use Thai massage to address a range of health issues, including:

  • Relieving tension headaches
  • Decreasing back pain
  • Reducing joint stiffness and pain
  • Stimulating circulation and lymphatic drainage
  • Boosting energy

Because a traditional Thai massage session covers all of the muscles in your body, it typically lasts 90 minutes to 120 minutes.

How much do you tip a massage therapist?

All forms of massage therapy, from Thai massage to Swedish massage to deep tissue massage, are similar to other spa or hospitality services. So it’s appropriate to tip a massage therapist the standard hospitality rate of 15 percent to 20 percent of the cost of the session. For example, the national average cost for a deep tissue massage is $70-$90, so expect to tip $12-$18. Of course, you can always tip more or less depending on your experience, especially if you’ve opted for extra services. For example, expect to tip more for a couple’s hot stone massage session that includes aromatherapy. Also, if you’re paying with a gift certificate or coupon, or purchasing a discounted multi-session package, make sure to calculate your tip based on the full price of the massage.
