I can't say enough great things about Jose. After being flaked on by a bunch of different handymen around San Diego, Jose was a breath of fresh air. On time, fair prices, great communication, outstanding work and a super nice guy. He put's 150% into everything he does. I will be hiring him again for ALL of my future projects. -Adam-

our freezer was oozing water, creating a skating rink at the bottom i had to chip out every couple of days with a knife. luis quickly diagnosed and repaired, cleaned all sorts of ick from beneath that were clogging air flow and overburdening the machinations (we have two cats and two dogs, and there was a hair sweater under there). he explained how the fridge has been running nonstop because it couldn't, essentially, breathe. it is usually all a-rumble...but it has been quiet as a mouse since he left. he also jacked up the height of its front pegs so it's on little high heels... it's so quiet it seems like he forgot to plug it back in. amazing! very pleased. got lecture about importance of regular maintenance.... will take it to heart. his work guaranteed for one year, which is nice.

Robert was incredibly nice, personable, and professional. I was concerned about mold in my home, so hired Robert to come do non-intrusive air tests. He was extremely knowledgable, talked me through every step of his process, and really inspired my confidence in his work. I'd hire him again in a heartbeat.

Don't waste time if you want honesty fair pricing work and someone who says what he means and stand by his word, Then look no further HIRE This company . Being a older woman I could not believe what some of these people tried to charge and BS they tried to pull. I know a lot more then to trust some of the people who showed up to bid . TCS was awesome! After I got stood up (twice!!!) by another contractor, Jason and his son Jason were on the ball with coming out to diagnose my long-dead air conditioner in this heat. They will have it up and running again today for a fair price. Punctual, professional, responsive, good pricing, gave me options. Thank you TCS, I will send everyone I know to you for their HVAC needs!

I needed a through-the-wall air conditioner replaced. Already had hole in wall that needed to be enlarged, then a/c install. James arrived on time and set down tarps to prevent damage/be clean. He ran into some difficulties with the project, but worked it all out. His price was fair and I'm pleased with the result. I would hire him again.

Thank you to Prestigious/Independent Heat & Air for the excellent service. We have been trying to find a reliable business to service our AC Air/Heating Unit at our office. For some reason, these guys are hard to find... Thankfully, we were referred to Prestigious/Independent Heat & Air. Jason came for the first service and was thorough, polite, neat, and professional. It was refreshing to work with someone like Jason. We will be using these guys again for multiple locations and happy to refer them on to friends and family... Thank you again!!

Great job! Quoted a fixed price to fix a mess left behind by my (ex) general contractor (Hydronic radiant floor heating) . The big companies in San Diego wouldn't even look at it - one other company was more than double his quote. He got the job done in the time quoted, was punctual, courteous and knowledgeable.

I got quotes from at least 8 contractors and Eddie gave me a very competitive price. He also has a great review on yelp (check with him for how to see the reviews). He patiently answered all my questions and finished within one day for a whole house AC installation. It was the right timing for the hot season, and so far it's running good and strong. I will surely recommend Eddie to my friends/neighbors or anyone if they ask me for suggestion. At least give Eddie a call/message before making the final decesion!

Robbie Duin and his crew replaced the roof on my barn. The job included (6) skylights and (4) air vents. I'm very pleased with the level of workmanship, quality of materials and overall result. I would not hesitate to recommend Duin-It Roofing to friends, neighbors, family and anyone interested in a good job at a fair price.

We've used Bill Howe a couple of times now and couldn't be happier. Both times they came to repair leaks. The first time, the leak was very extensive. We actually had water pouring down through the ceiling and initially called a different "plumber", which turned out to be a complete disaster. The guy worked on the issue for hours and wasn't able to resolve it. Plus, he left a huge mess. After paying him a couple hundred dollars, we still had water coming through the ceiling. So, we decided to call Bill Howe. They were able to come the same day and correct the issue in 30-45 mins. Plus, their technician was super nice, explained to us exactly what the problem was and cleaned up after himself! After having such a good experience the first time, we called Bill Howe again for our leaky kitchen sink. They came out again and did a great job in a very short amount of time. They even caulked the sink for us after the repair since the people who sold us the house never had this done. All in all, they offer excellent service that is both fast and affordable, and we'd certainly hire them again!

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    What is an HVAC system?

The letters in HVAC stand for heating, ventilation and air conditioning. An HVAC system enables you to regulate your home or building’s internal temperature (thermal control) for comfortable living and working. You can bring heat levels down in the summer and up in the winter, keeping your home or office livable year-round. HVAC systems can also help with humidity levels and regulate indoor air quality in a home or office. There are many types of HVAC systems and technologies available.

Many homes have a forced-air HVAC system. Both the heating and the central air conditioning units share a ductwork system where they either push in or pull out warm or cooled air. There are also heating and cooling systems that don’t require ductwork — such as ductless mini-splits — but work on the same principles of heat exchange. The national average to hire an HVAC specialist is $2,920-$3,670, with costs varying depending on the work you need done and the equipment you are installing.

How many years does HVAC last?

The number of years an HVAC system lasts depend on the type and brand of components that make up your system. The lifespan of an air conditioner averages between 15 and 20 years. The life expectancy of a tankless water heater is approximately 20 years, while a storage water heater is closer to 10-15 years. Ducts may need replacing within 10-15 years. Your equipment will have a longer life if you have regular tuneups and maintenance to keep everything in good working order. If you’re having repair problems and your HVAC system is over 10 years old, it’s a good time to consider the costs and benefits of repairing vs. replacing. Energystar.gov provides the following tips to help you decide whether to repair or replace:

    • Your HVAC system needs frequent repairs and your energy bills are increasing.
    • Your cooling or heating equipment is less efficient.
    • Rooms in your home are too hot or too cold.
    • Your heat pump or air conditioner is more than 10 years old.
      • Replacing your system with an Energy Star-certified unit could save up to 20 percent on your heating and cooling bills.
    • Your furnace or boiler is more than 15 years old.
      • You may choose to replace your system with an Energy Star-certified furnace (which is 15 percent more efficient than a conventional furnace) or an Energy Star-certified boiler (which is 5 percent more efficient).
    • Your home has humidity problems.
    • Your home has excessive dust.
      • Leaky ducts can pull particles and air from attics, crawl spaces and basements and distribute them throughout your house. Sealing your ducts may be a solution.
    • Your heating or cooling system is noisy.
      • You could have an undersized duct system or a problem with the indoor coil of your cooling equipment.
    • Your score on the Home Energy Yardstick is below five.
      • That means your home energy use is above average and you're probably paying too much for your utilities.

How much does it cost to get central air?

Prices for central-air HVAC systems will vary. The national average to hire an HVAC specialist is $2,920-$3,670 but can run as high as $5,000 or even $12,000 depending on the capacity you need and other factors. Installing central air conditioning requires an entire system that works together to draw hot air out of your home. The system includes an outdoor unit, which houses the condenser and compressor, and the evaporator coils. If you don’t have an existing duct system, ductwork will need to be installed, which will affect labor and material costs. Leaking or damaged ducts will also need to be replaced.

How much does it cost for a new air conditioning unit?

If you’re ready for a new air conditioning unit, it’s time to start exploring HVAC prices. The price will vary depending on the type of air conditioner you buy and its cooling capacity. Window units, which require minimal installation, are one of the most affordable options on the market. If you’re purchasing from a big-box store, you can expect to pay approximately $120-$1,000 for a window unit. Window units are appealing for their quick setup and relatively low cost, but they can use more energy over time than central air and only cool the room in which they’re installed. Portable air conditioners don’t have the cooling power of a window unit, but they do have the perk of being transportable from room to room. Expect to pay between $225 and $800 for a portable air conditioner, on average. For a whole-house air conditioning system with coils, condenser and line (not including installation or ductwork), the cost from a big-box store can range from approximately $2,000 to $4,000 or more. If you don’t have (and don’t want to put in) ducts, a ductless mini-split air conditioner is a good option, although pricey up front. Pricing can range from $650 to $4,250 per unit on average; you’ll need one unit for each room in which you want temperature control.
