"I have several issues going on. She is very knowledgeable and indicated most and worked on them. For a first visit. I was very impressed . I'm older and have been going for deep tissue massage for over 27 years. Somewhat faithfully. When I have therapists available in my locations ( I travel a lot ) ... most do very well trying to help me that I have gone to. Back to the question. Very impressed, satisfied with the first treatment and will and have rescheduled for next week...... I will be a ( temporary ) permanent client as long as I'm in Charlotte "

"Working with Jessa has been a great experience. I have seen her about 5 or 6 times now, and her massage therapy has been very helpful for my backpain. I am impressed with her techniques and her ability to target specific treatment modalities. She pays attention to my specific needs, tailoring her technique accordingly. She also spends time before sessions with diagnosis (i.e. stretching to see where my muscle limitations are) and then using that info to customize the massage. Also, she is friendly and sweet to deal with. Definitely recommend!"

"Giovanni is truly a talented massage therapist. I've had about 50+ different people massage me over the years and now that I've found Giovanni I don't need to use anyone else. As an athlete, I'm always looking for someone who can help get me back on my feet when I have aches or pains and he does it every time. Giovanni understands how to be firm and work out problems areas but he also makes you walk away feeling relaxed. He clearly knows how to work on a range of clients, both hard-core athletes to someone wanting just seeking some gentle relaxation. Goivanni truly understands how the body works and is able to give a massage that transforms you. He worked on me when I was pregnant and took me from barely being able to walk as a result of sciatica to complete healing. He really works to understand what is going on with your body and listens to your needs. Giovanni is someone that truly throws his entire heart into his profession and cares about the outcome of his treatment. He's always learning and incorporating new techniques into his treatment. As a woman getting a massage, I never feel uncomfortable and am always appreciative of how communicative and respectful Giovanni is. Ultimately, when I get a massage from Giovanni, I'm in a better place than I was before the treatment. I wish that all could experience his healing work."

"My health coach, Tara Marple, is knowledge, personable, persistent, an effective communicator and enthusiastic in her well rounded approach to educate and challenge clients. In the years' time that we have worked together, due to her support (via weekly lessons, homework and discussions) I have achieved significant improvements in my overall health (reduced weight, healthy food intake, regularly exercise) and through her guidance have started experiencing the benefits from a more positive mental and emotional outlook. Yet these changes have not only benefitted my life's journey but also that of my teenage daughter, who due to better nutrition has more energy for school and sports. For these reasons I highly recommend Tara as a health coach to anyone who is serious about making the commitment to a healthy and happier lifestyle. She will provide positive support and encouragement not only during the initial challenge to change but will create a solid foundation to achieve and maintain the journey till your goals are met. "

"I am taking private yoga lessons with Amanda twice a week and OMG, what a privilege! Once I retired I promised myself that I would use my hard earned money to do something special for myself. One of my desires was to find someone who could help me get back to myself after so many years of giving to everyone else. I was skeptic the first time I met Amanda because I was so much older than she but after 10 minutes talking with her I knew I had ended my search. She put me at ease immediately as she listened patiently to all of my requirements without interruption. I have taken many yoga classes in my 65 years (both private and group) but this is the first time I have been fortunate enough to have found someone who can teach me how to tap into my total self. My experience with Amanda has been phenomenal. She is a truly devoted teacher with an in-depth knowledge of the true philosophy of yoga. Amanda shares her skills and experiences in a kind and non egotistical way. I come away from each session in touch with myself on so many different levels. Amanda is not just a yoga asana instructor she is a true yoga teacher. I am very fortunate to have become one of her students and always look forward to our time together. "

"Wonderful massage by someone who is very caring. Amy has been doing body work on my for about 3 years. I absolutely love her touch. She is very consistent and checks in often to make sure pressure is at a good level. Amy also asks before each session how I am feeling. I always leave the table feeling refreshed and nurtured!"

"Serenity got my attention when I observed her working with another client at my gym. One of the things I most appreciated from Serenity is that when I first approached her about the possibility of personal training, she was not at all overwhelming as I have experienced with other prospective trainers. She was immediately in tune with my overall well-being and I sensed from the beginning that we could develop a collaborative relationship. My first-intuition into her character was that she truly connects with and cares about her clients. After working with Serenity for the last 5 months, I can attest that she is one of the most genuine and compassionate individuals I have met – coupled with being very competent, and passionate about her profession (which is much more expansive than just personal training.) Athletic for over 40 years, I first came to Serenity with acute and chronic injuries, and (despite the physical hindrances) an ambitious goal – to qualify for the Boston Marathon within the next few years. Serenity has devised a progressive plan for me, which she reviews on a weekly basis when we meet. With my input and her observance of my performance/abilities, she makes adjustments, keeps me steady, or moves me forward on her long-term plan. The last 10 mins. of my session are reserved for a deep tissue massage of an acute shoulder condition I had been suffering from for almost a year. I am so pleased to say that the combination of the weekly mini-massage and stretching/strengthening exercises Serenity has had me do for the past 5 months have drastically reduced my shoulder pain and I have regained most of the mobility. That said, Serenity will be the first to say “there’s still room for more improvement.” Additionally, Serenity continues to work with me to strengthen all muscle groups (including the easily overlooked but significant ones) to get my body better balanced in order to reduce the possibility of further injuries (past lower back and knee issues). Lately, Serenity has shared that I am ready for higher-level strengthening exercises and we are moving together towards the next phase of her long-term plan for me. Serenity is careful to inform me of which exercises I am ready to do on my own, and which ones I need to continue developing better-form under her direct guidance so that I may continue to progress prudently. I can feel myself getting stronger each month -- and with continued workout evolution, consistency and patience, I truly believe that Serenity will get me to my long-term goal of running the Boston Marathon sometime in the next several years! "Lilah is a gem---an intuitive, loving, well trained, skilled and powerful healer. She has the gift of transformational touch. Lilah has been my massage therapist (and friend) for many years (I think 20). Her loving touch has helped my body heal from injuries and my spirit reconnect to its source. Lilah cares for the whole being. The beautuful environment she creates in her massage studio (clean, warm beautiful) and the safety she always holds in her heart make it easy to sink deeply into her relaxing and loving embrace. In the past year Lilah has been studying and practicing a form of massage called "Phenomenal Touch" from a master teacher. This is an extraordinary and transformative teaching which is a perfect match with Lilah's innate gift of touch and depth of presence. I highly recommend Lilah as a massage therapist. ❤️ Eric"

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a traditional Thai massage?

Traditional Thai massage is a different experience if you’ve only ever had a Swedish or deep tissue massage. In Thai massage, you wear loose-fitting clothing (often provided by the massage therapist) and start by lying on a mat. Throughout the massage, the therapist moves your body into various seated and prone positions, which stretch and release your muscles and soft tissue. Although your body is moving, the therapist is doing all the work, making it feel similar to supported yoga. The massage therapist will bend, stretch, and compress and lengthen your body using their hands, forearms, elbows and even feet. Don’t be alarmed by the feet! Many studios have overhead supports that allow the practitioners to safely walk on your back, releasing tight adhesions and promoting ease. Thai massage can be both invigorating and relaxing. It is an excellent option for keeping your muscles in good health if you regularly work out, or if you want to overcome a lack of flexibility. Studies show that Thai massage can increase blood circulation, improve flexibility, reduce muscle tension and enhance mental well-being.

What is a deep tissue full body massage?

A deep tissue full body massage is a form of healing bodywork. At your first massage, your massage therapist will do a brief intake. They will ask you questions about the type of pressure you’d like to receive during your deep tissue massage, any previous massage experience you’ve had, and any injuries or sensitivities you have. You can remain clothed, or the massage therapist will provide draping so that even if you’re not wearing clothes you are always fully covered. Deep tissue massage may be a good option for people with chronic pain or muscle tension. The systematic deep tissue strokes will work to break down any scar tissue or stiff tissues and create ease in your body again. Massage therapists use their hands, forearms, fists and knuckles to knead and stroke your muscles and loosen adhesions. Although deep tissue massage work is intense, it should not be painful, so communicate clearly with your massage therapist so they know if you’re having any discomfort. The national average cost of a deep tissue massage is between $70 and $90.

Do deep tissue massages work?

Deep tissue massage not only feels fabulous, it can provide results. The massage technique targets deeper layers of muscle and your connective tissue. For its ability to stimulate those deeper muscles, deep tissue massage is commonly used during recuperation from sports-related and other injuries, according to the Mayo Clinic. Deep tissue massage has been proved to reduce high blood pressure and a range of other ailments. Deep tissue and other types of massage are frequently used for relieving stress, managing pain, breaking down scar tissue, relieving muscle tension and improving health. The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health cites the following as health conditions for which that deep tissue massage can provide relief:

  • Chronic low back pain, chronic neck pain, and osteoarthritis of the knee
  • Labor pains
  • Depression and anxiety
  • Fibromyalgia pain and fatigue
  • Headaches
  • HIV/AIDS

The proper deep tissue massage may also benefit preterm infant health. Cancer patients may experience reduced pain, increased relaxation, and improved mood.

Is it good to have a Thai massage?

Thai massage not only feels good, it has proven health benefits. In general, massage can reduce stress, relieve pain, decrease negative symptoms from chronic illness, and promote wellness. But Thai massage, in addition to all these health benefits, is especially wonderful for improving flexibility and can also be highly beneficial to athletes or anyone who has regular strain on their muscles. During a Thai massage, the massage therapist will move your body through a variety of yoga-like poses and postures, all with the intention of loosening your muscles, improving your circulation and promoting bodily wellness. A study by the Journal of Physical Therapy Science showed the benefits of Thai massage during and after athletic performance:

  • Improved physical fitness and flexibility, attributed to reduced muscle tension and increased blood flow to muscles.
  • Increased muscle blood supply, which may allow the muscles to get more oxygen and nutrients from the blood, giving them more endurance and strength.
  • Enhanced positive mood states and psychological well-being, both of which promote physical recovery.

What is the purpose of a deep tissue massage?

There are many reasons to get a deep tissue massage. A deep tissue massage can release adhesions — also known as knots — that are causing painful tension in your muscles. Deep tissue massage can promote healing and ease discomfort related to illnesses such as cancer, chronic headaches, osteoarthritis of the knee, chronic neck or back pain, depression, and more, according to the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health. If you have an old sports injury such as shin splints, or a bad back from an old car accident, deep tissue massage can promote healing in your traumatized and scarred soft tissues and get you on the road to recovery. The strokes and techniques used in deep tissue massage work to lengthen soft tissue structures that have stiffened and hardened into knotty adhesions that allow minimal movement. Deep tissue massage can loosen these adhesions so that long-standing scar tissue releases and you can gain more mobility and more freedom from stiffness and pain. And it just feels good. The national average cost of a deep tissue massage is between $70 and $90.
