I highly recommend Unlimited Building & Plumbing Services. I had a clogged drain and was uncertain where the clogged was. Darvell, the owner, gave me the best quote and quickly arranged plumber to work onsite (next day). When the clogging happened again in main line, Darvell against was able to send plumber to us in the next day and fully solved the issue. Darvell even called to check with us a week later to confirm everything is well.

Michael was AWESOME! I needed assistance assembling some office furniture. We got the furniture a day early. I called him up to see if he could come by to help. He was flexible with my schedule and came at a moments notice. He was friendly and ready to work. Made my job a lot easier! I will definitely be using his services again.

We wanted a pergola built for our backyard as well as an outdoor shower enclosure. After several interviews with contractors I was getting discouraged at the lack of professionalism. After meeting with Noah, I knew he was the right person for the job. He was willing to work with my design ideas and contributed some additional ideas that complimented our existing plan. He was professional, personable, on-time and most-importantly built us a beautiful structure that we could not be more pleased with!! We asked him back a few months later to build us a side gate for our house. While he was in the middle of constructing that, a massive 80-foot tree fell in our backyard, breaking one of our water faucets and water was flowing freely. Noah called me at work, and was gracious enough to turn off our water, cap the broken water line and save us from an even bigger disaster. He went above and beyond. We will hire him in a second for any future construction jobs we may have!

Tom did a great job with our home remodel (adding two additional parts for 650sqft total plus renovation of existing parts). He was very transparent about options, pricing, and even the inevitable issues that arise when building onto an existing home. There was work happening every day in ncluding most weekends throughout the 6mo project, which is rare for contractors. Tom even put in his own time to get the job done when subs were unavailable, showing his dedication to getting the job done and making us satisfied. I would definitely recommend Tom (I.C.R.) for your project. Scott Sunnyvale, CA

In my profession (Hotel General Manager), I have worked with many contractors in building hotels which were shady, dogmatic, lazy and came and went as they pleased. And now looking back at those experiences, I wish today I would have had John as the main contractor. His work ethics, time management, communication, tenacity at the job, fair price point, genuine care for me as a customer were not only visible during the job but resonate in my mind and hear still today. Everyday I walk into my warehouse and I look at the job he completed (stair case) it brings a smile to my face and a pep in my step. The wood work he completed breaths and sings excellence and heart! Thank you John for restoring my faith in contractors.... there are still men out their that care for the craftsmanship that they do. You have a true talent and art that many others need to try. And your personality and warm heart are icing on the cake. As I stated to you.... my next building (construction job) has your name all over it! Well done....! Bethinketh Co. places our seal of approval on your amazing work!

I had another handyman at our 4plex in Sunnyvale but wanted a little more quality from his work. So I tried out Jesus. He charges a little more, but is extremely skilled whether it is installing a custom door, getting a door lock to sit just right, making plumbing changes or recommending water heater changes. He definitely knows the small details in home construction and maintenance. Stephen

Our storage shed door need to be replaced as it had wood damage. Kenneth came and looked at it, and gave us a very reasonable estimate. Later, he came and had to custom-make the door and finished the job in a timely manner. He did a very thorough and professional job. I would definitely re-hire him for my future carpentry needs and he has my highest recommendation.

I contacted Wilfredo to prepare design schematics for our 3 bed, 2 ba home in Santa Clara. I had no experience with the permit process, so I asked Wilfredo to help. He provided all the guidance and plan sets for me to review with the city's planning/building departments. I was able to have the plans approved over the counter. The building department was very impressed with the professional preparation Wilfredo provided. I found Wilfredo to be very professional and quick to deliver all that was needed for a smooth admission. I highly recommend Wilfredo to anyone renovating a home.

Teri redesigned my children's bedroom last fall. The space was small and limiting, yet Teri found a way to transform the room. The bright colors, lovely (and age-appropriate artwork), and affordable furniture have created a very warm and positive space. Teri has a unique way of working with you. She takes the time to get to know you a a person and understand your unique tastes and styles. She works with your budget and has an excellent supply chain and is able to get some amazing deals! I would recommend Teri to anyone looking to redesign any space in their home!

When we decided to remodel our 40+ year old home in Saratoga, my husband and I wanted to hire a local company that would be able to do everything we needed-a "one stop shop" After interviewing several contractors and designers, we stopped by the Saratoga Kitchen & Bath showroom on Hwy 9. We were very impressed, (the nicest we'd seen) so we scheduled an appointment with the owner, Rob, to come to our house. He was extremely knowledgeable, and seemed to be very easy to work with. We had lots of ideas, and he (very patiently) listened to them all. I think we kept him there for over 3 hours that night, but he didn't seem to mind! We hired him to draw the plans to try to see what ideas would work--he came back a week later with not only our ideas, but several we hadn't even thought of yet. For the next 3 months, we met several times to come up with a final plan that we loved--what a fun process!! We felt very comfortable with them at that point, so we hired them to do the entire project for us. We are so happy we did! They assigned a crew to our job, and we all became good friends throughout the job. The project manager was a stickler for the details and quite the perfectionist. There were a lot of changes to our floor plan, taking out a wall, new windows, etc., but it was clear they knew exactly what to do. They clearly take great pride in their work. The city building inspector even offered compliments!! The cabinet maker did a fantastic job-they made several samples to get the finish exactly how we wanted it, and they came out even more beautiful than expected. The granite, tile, and floor installers were also first rate-clearly experts in their fields We are very proud of our new kitchen, and we've had lots of compliments. We plan to have them back for our master bath remodel (hopefully soon!) I would HIGHLY RECOMMEND them to anyone looking for a designer or contractor. 5 STARS!!

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    How do architects work?

Architects may work for an architecture or engineering firm, they may work for a government organization, they can work for a construction company, or they may be self-employed (freelance). The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics explains that architects spend a large amount of their working time in the home or company office: meeting with clients; creating reports and architectural drawings; and working with other architects and engineers. When not in an office, an architect is often at the construction site either as part of the development of plans or to ensure building progress is following the blueprint.

When a client interacts with an architect, it is typically to have them design drawings for the construction of a house or a building. If you are a client who has hired a large architecture firm, there may be a team of people working on your design. But if you are working with a freelance architect or a smaller firm, one person (or a small group) will take your concept and translate it into an architectural blueprint that a builder can use to construct a house. The plans will lay out everything from the depth of the foundation to the materials to use to the type of metal to be used in the reinforcement. Once the plans have been created and handed off to the builder, the architect may remain on the project — depending on budget — and oversee progress.

How do architects charge for their services?

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, the median salary of an architect in 2016 was $76,930. This range included architects with every type of company as well as self-employed architects. Depending on the architect and whether they’re with a firm or independent, they may charge per hour or by the square foot, or they may charge a percentage of the total budget for a construction project. An hourly rate is typically used for smaller projects such as providing consultation, helping clients hone their concept before the design process begins, or drafting documents and plans. If an architect is working on an hourly basis on a larger project, there will usually be an agreed-upon cap on the number of hours they will work. For larger projects, such as new construction or total overhaul remodels, architects may charge a percentage of the total construction costs. The architect will usually set the percentage you will pay after the total cost of construction has been accounted for. Percentages can range within a firm depending on the extent of the services they’re providing. For example, a lower percentage of the total construction costs may include drafting and minimal consultation and guidance along the way, while a higher percentage could include on-site project management services with every detail attended to. Architects may also charge by the square footage of the project. The rate per square foot can vary depending on the individual’s training, the services they are providing, the complexity of the project, and other factors — such as obtaining permits. The national average cost to hire an architect is between $1,690 and $2,500.
