Offering vocal coaching from my from my business studio in Chatsworth, your home, or via Skype, I teach all levels and ages. Your instruction is tailored individually to take you to the next level and beyond by means of developing balance, coordination, consistency, and strength of the voice through your entire vocal range. Once able to adeptly access, and transition smoothly through, the different registers in your voice, your singing becomes limitless! While developing these skills, we will also incorporate style and performance (if desired) to the lesson. An active performer, I bring real-world singing experience to my coaching and a passion to help you find your voice. With a background in clinical psychology and a warm sense of humor, you will find a safe environment to challenge yourself and grow vocally, artistically and in self-confidence -- whether your goal is performance, hobbyist, or simply an outlet for self-expression. I look forward to working with you!
WHAT TECHNIQUE(S) DO YOU TEACH?
My background was initially a classical style, ensuring a healthy voice and a solid blend of "chest" and "head" voice. I have since incorporated "mix" technique into this. The principal idea is that with proper placement and consistent, balanced tension on the vocal chords, we can easily travel through our bridges (passaggios) without any change in quality of the voice. What this can do is prevent or fix any undesirable qualities in the voice such as an overly breathy or airy sound, or conversely, a voice that is too strained by not letting go of the chest voice, or using too much muscle. Also, we can eradicate the "flip", a very common occurrence where singers experience a drastic change in vocal quality when moving from their lower chest register into the higher registers. This is effectively beneficial for all styles of music--a softer mix is used more for classical, and heavier, for pop sound and anything in between.
HOW DOES YOUR SERVICE STAND OUT?
I think my work as a vocal coach stands out for several reasons. To start, there are many instructors currently teaching who learned various theories some time ago, and perhaps at one point years ago may have performed. These instructors may able to impart vocal knowledge, however, I feel that an active performer such as myself can teach you much more. My real-world experience can help you to translate what we learn in class to the stage, and to the music community at large. More than a vocal teacher, I am also a mentor, advisor, and cheerleader all in one!
A graduate in clinical psychology, and having experience as a psychotherapist, I am always tuned into other aspects of vocal students aside from simply having a voice. Singing is an expression, it can be a product of our most deepest self, and at times can take a leap of faith. In me you will find a very warm and empathetic person who will give you a safe place to challenge yourself and to grow.
Finally, over my 40+ years on this earth :), I have gained life experience, teaching experience, and interpersonal skills that can't be found in younger instructors fresh out of school. You can rely on me to be responsible and dependable.
Knowledge alone does not necessarily make for a good instructor!
One-on-one lessons gives me an opportunity to form a great working relationship with my students and a chance for us to learn a bit about one another as people. Our lessons are work intensive, but they are often fun as well! I am very invested in the work that my students do in lesson and love to witness and celebrate their successes, no matter how small. It's my relationships with these students and their successes that make my job so rewarding!
