This was GiGi’s first formal grooming experience. She’s a 3 year old rescue pup who has had nail trimmings only at her Vet since we adopted her. She also had an aversion to water, plus will not climb stairs to our bathtub, therefore only had patio baths during the warmer months. I did not realize what she was missing out on until she had the Rebel Dog Grooming experience. Ace was such a tender handler. He made her feel like she could trust him within minutes. She was a nervous puppy, however warmed up and let him take care of her teeth, nails, ears and incredible spa like bath. She ran into the house with so much excitement and a huge grin. She smelled incredible; she looked so shiny. I could not recommend this company enough. Ace was accommodating to my schedule, he was incredibly affordable and he did an outstanding job on GiGi. We will be regular devoted clients from now on.

**Dave "gets" dogs, and its clear the dogs "get" Dave too. He is up to date and very knowledgable on the science ( vs so many myths and common misconceptions) of how to motivate dogs and bases his training from science utelizing positive training methods. * He taught me "clicker" style training without the clicker) and how to improve my timing for marking behavior for reinforcement. It has made a positive difference to "come when called" and in obedience when on walks. **Dave is prompt, personable, and straightforward in communication. He was very understanding when appointments needed to be rescheduled and then cancelled for a few months. ***His genuine concern for the dog ,( and their human), is evident. Dave is a delight to work with. I wholeheartedly recommend him.... almost as much as Leo Lambchop, my little Maltese poodle

Susan is not just a loving care taker of my dog, Max and my cat, Sir Purrs A Lot, but I think she's actually an animal whisperer. She is my daily dog-walker and has also house/dog/cat sat for a week at a time on many occasions. I completely trust her and know that my animals are in great care when she is with them. I would recommend her highly.

Robin has pet sat for all of our dogs and cats over the years. She loves and cares for them as if they were her own. When we return from vacation, we sometimes think our pets would rather have her stay longer than watch us come home, as they get daily massages and 24/7 attention in her presence. She is also a fantastic pet photographer and sends us photo updates during her stay at our home. She brings her own food and cleans the sheets and towels she uses before we return. She sometimes has other client jobs during our job, but she asks us ahead of time. Since the jobs are usually feeding a cat across town, which takes an hour or two, we don't have a problem with it. All of our pets are seniors that require medication on specific schedules. Robin is really good about taking care of geriatric animals (guinea pigs included), which allow us the peace of mind to leave for an important family event, one of us would not otherwise be able to attend.

AAAAAAAAA+++++++++++ Teri has been absolutely fantastic working with my 2 large dogs and my old cat. The animals are all excited to see her when they see her coming. She always texts me to let me know when she arrives and again when she is leaving. Frequently I get text photos of their day. Having Teri with my furballs allows me to concentrate at work. Wouldn't want anyone else at my house.

To whom it may concern, I am writing to recommend Jo-Jeanne Rapier, whom I have known and employed for the past nine years. Jo-Jeanne provided day care, walks, medication administering, boarding, and transportation for my Border Collie, Cilla as well as house sitting, as I was often working out of town. Sometimes those jobs came on short notice and I came to rely heavily on her services and with her dependability, punctuality and trustworthiness, I was never disappointed. I always returned to a happy, healthy, and well groomed dog, my house in pristine condition, and with Jo-Jeanne’s green thumb, my garden always looked better than how I left it. In the final months of Cilla’s life, Jo-Jeanne’s compassionate care was invaluable. She doted on Cilla, as if she was her own, and made that difficult time in Cilla’s life, and mine, an easier transition. With Jo-Jeanne’s past involvement of running her own dog rescue, Abandoned Terrier Rescue Association, she is also a staunch advocate of animal rights. And I have witnessed first hand her skills and abilities in working with many kinds of animals and I would give her my highest recommendation with the care of any of your pets. If I can provide any further assistance, please do not hesitate to contact me at: (818)-434-1123 Sincerely, Eric Sandlin

If you want exceptional pet care service and peace of mind, then Tara is the one to call!

Finding a responsible, caring and professional dog sitter is more than a pet owner can ask for. Arlene not only asked me all the right questions, but also tuned into all of Odin's subtle yet critical (signals) body language. With this, she successfully assisted and aided his every need. Odin is not just my senior canine, but he also has special needs that require 24hr. care and observation. Arlene's compassion and patience not only put all the animals at ease in my home but her professional demeanor was also reflected through the relationships that she established in my home with my fur babies. Arlene quickly established a connection with my dog and assisted him with all of his needs (getting up, re-adjusting,and going potty) as well as administered all of his meds., not to mention cared for my cats as well. If it were not for Arlene, I would not have been able to take my trip with peace of mind. I plan to use Arlene as a regular sitter and Strongly recommend Arlene as a pet sitter/care giver

I've never used a pet sitter before, so I was hesitant. I got 3 replies and chose Virginia Norris. She came to my house to go over what I wanted her to do. She kept me updated while I was on vacation on how things were going, especially at the end. I would definitely use her again and highly recommend her. Lori Stern

Patricia Gleason has been my dog walker for about four years and was recommended to me by a neighbor. Patricia is like the neighborhood dog caretaker: she knows every dog on the block and they all love her! Patricia truly loves and cares about my dog. She always sends me text updates whenever she cares for him which I greatly appreciate, it's always comforting to get updates about your furry friends. She is great at reading dogs and knowing what care they will need: are they aggressive? Do they pull? Should they be kept away from other dogs or people? Patricia always knows what to do. Patricia is very cautious and responsible and I would recommend her to anyone who needs a dog walker (and I have recommended her to friends in the past). She has walked my dog daily while I'm at work and has also cared for him while I was on vacation. My dog Louie LOVES Patricia and actually smiles when he sees her. She's a true animal lover.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is included in a dog grooming?

Dog grooming is so much more than giving your dog a bath. Dog grooming is a broad term that covers all aspects of canine cleanliness and hygiene. The services included in dog grooming will vary based on your needs and what you choose to pay. Unless they are rolling in cowpies or playing in mud puddles, most dogs are okay getting a shampoo bath only as needed. You’ll know when they need it if they smell bad or are bringing dirt into the house. Some dogs, like shepherds and shih tzus, have thick coats that can get matted and tangled without regular care. Pro dog groomers can deftly blow dry a dog’s hair after a bath so that it is shiny and smooth. Dog grooming can include brushing that detangles dog hair and also thins the undercoat to minimize shedding.

Dog grooming also includes hygiene services such as toothbrushing and ear cleaning. Clean teeth are important to the health of your dog, and the pros have the patience and proper technique to get it done. Regular dog grooming can stave off tear stains, those reddish stains below your dog’s eyes. Anal gland expression is something not many people want to do on their own, even if they love their dog. A dog groomer can safely and efficiently release any blocked anal gland fluid. Other dog grooming services include nail trimming and clipping. Nationally, dog grooming prices range from $60 to $80. Most dog groomers offer discounts to customers who purchase monthly packages or bundle multiple grooming services at one time.

What does a dog walker do?

We all know our dogs love going on long, adventure-filled walks, but jobs and family and commuting can make it difficult to give them the leash time they deserve. You can hire a professional dog walker to make sure your furry friend gets adequate exercise and outdoor time each day. A professional dog walker may be an individual contractor or work for a dedicated dog-walking company. In either case, you want to make sure the pro has the appropriate insurance in case of an emergency. Some people opt to give the dog walker a key to their house; others to have them pick up the dog from the yard. Dog walking can happen as often as multiple times per day, or just a few times a month as needed. Here are some questions to ask when you are interviewing a new dog walker:

  • Will you or someone else be walking my dog?
  • Do you have a backup plan if you can’t make it for a scheduled walk?
  • Will you walk my dog by itself, or do you walk several dogs at once?
  • What are your different walk routes?
  • When will you pick up and drop off?
  • How will we communicate?
  • Do I have to commit to a schedule or are you flexible?
  • What’s your cancellation policy?
  • What’s your response plan if my dog gets injured or becomes sick?
  • How and how often do I pay you?
  • Do you offer package pricing if I buy multiple dog walks up front?

What is a dog groomer?

A dog groomer is a service professional who provides dog grooming and basic hygiene care for your dog. Dog groomers are typically animal lovers who are competent and comfortable working with a wide range of dog breeds and temperaments. Dog groomers are knowledgeable about the care needs for different kinds of dog coats. A poodle will have different haircut needs than a shih tzu, for example, so it pays to have a trained pro provide the proper cut. Good dog groomers know how to safely clean your dog’s teeth, bathe your dog, and cut their nails without going too short. They understand how to trim the hair from around your dog’s face, express anal glands, and clean your dog’s ears. Many people who choose dog grooming as a profession also pursue other dog services such as attending veterinary school, running a doggy day care center, working as a professional dog walker, and more.

What is a dog groomer?

Keep your family dogs happy, healthy and clean with regular dog grooming. A dog groomer is a business owner or employee of a dog grooming business who specializes in dog hygiene and grooming. To find a reputable dog groomer, research reviews, ask for references and confirm that the groomer has good standing in the dog grooming community.

A dog groomer should be comfortable and competent working with dogs of all breeds and temperaments. Typically a groomer will have trained with other groomers and taken educational courses to keep abreast of the latest safety information and techniques. There are brick-and-mortar dog grooming businesses, as well as mobile dog groomers who bring all their equipment and provide their services at your home or location. In some cases, brick-and-mortar businesses will also pick up and return your dog for an additional fee.

What vaccines do dogs need to be groomed?

It’s important to make sure your dog is up to date on its vaccines before taking it to a groomer. Vaccinations keep your dog and the other dogs that use the establishment healthy. Viruses can linger long after a dog is gone, so an unvaccinated dog can infect a number of other dogs days or even months after their visit. Find out about your dog groomer’s vaccination policies, and think carefully about receiving services from a company that does not require vaccinations. Here are the main vaccinations that are generally required for dog grooming:

  • Parvovirus: Parvo is a nasty virus that can kill dogs within 48-72 hours of infection. The virus is incredibly persistent and, according to the American Veterinary Medical Association, is resistant to heat, cold, humidity and drying. It’s spread by dog-to-dog contact or contact with contaminated feces, environments (food and water bowls, collars and leashes, etc.,) or people.
  • Adenovirus 2: Dogs receive this vaccination to protect against canine infectious hepatitis. The vaccination can also helps prevent canine cough.
  • Canine distemper virus: Distemper has no known cure and can cause serious pain, illness, and even death, although recovery is possible with medical intervention.
  • Rabies: This disease attacks the central nervous system and — when untreated — will
  • lead to death. The CDC recommends euthanizing an unvaccinated animal that has been exposed to rabies, although six-month isolation followed by vaccination is also permissible.
  • Para-influenza: Canine para-influenza leads to kennel cough and an unhappy dog.
