Joel and Cezar came that very day, gave me a free estimate AFTER they had used the camera to see my entire pipe system! I really appreciated their prompt attention and that they actually EXAMINED my pipes before talking to me about the problem and giving me an estimate for repairs. They were very polite, pesonable and knowledgable. They used the snake to router my line and charged only $69. A technician came back the very next day to hydro-jet my line, which completely cleared it and cost me only $250. Unfortunately, the device that measures the length of the pipe was not working and thus, the technician could not give me an accurate estimate of the cost of repairing the separate parts of my pipe system. He promised to return with a repaired device, measure the length and give me another free estimate. I am awaiting his return and awaiting their bill as they said they would send me an invoice. Except for this waiting, I was very satisfied.

The only issue I had with the overall service was that the techs showed up an hour early unannounced. Other than that, I am extremely happy with the work the techs did. They over exceeded my expectations and seeing that they were able to repair my parents' home furnace, I'm extremely happy that they took the time to insure the furnace worked like it was new.

Actually the work was done perfectly, quickly, by two great technicians. I only ding them the one star is because they were supposed to be here yesterday. Otherwise they would have received 5 stars.

First off Devin Peterson has been the best service technician we have come across. He is the operations manager and we have been serviced by other employees and he has passed on his stellar service. This company has in the ball park pricing and with the priceless customer service its well worth it. They stand behind all there work and everything they have said. Atomic is a follow through company and we will always be forever grateful that we've found this service company. Atomic has provided our home of these services Air duct & Dryer vent cleaning ,Carpet & Upholstery Cleaning and Air conditioning and Heating maintenance with some repairs. The only service we haven't had is the interior home cleaning offered but we do plan on it when the time comes. Its such a blessing to have this company for all those services. Awesome service! Response was within minutes and arrived in less than an hour. Knowledge was superb, he knew immediately what the issue was and quickly retrieved the parts to fix our furnace. With a 2 year old and it being only 60 degrees in the house we appreciate the quick fix and quality customer service. Most technicians would have changed a weekend rate, not Mr Simpson! We highly recommend his services and he's licensed.

Ben was quick to respond to my need for an HVAC specialist. He went right down to business upon arrival and within 30 minutes, I had a new capacitor and all the wires were neatly bounded up and put back together. AND he didn’t gouge on the price. I don’t know what is the cost of this job in general, but I liked that he didn’t try to rake in the hours and he was proud of his work. Of course I’m a happy camper now, and so is my doggie :-)

Overall very good experience. Hector is very honest. Got a good feeling about the company and in speaking with him. Pricing very reasonable. Overall clean work. Very responsive company. We had 2 entire HVAC and furnace systems replaced. Unfortunately furnace had a technical glitch in the system within the first couple of days. As soon as they found out the problem, someone came out to fix it immediately. Now everything is running smoothly. You never know with any product, if something might go wrong or a part may be recslled...so it’s important to have a company that is very responsive and ready to fix any problems encountered. We felt that we were in good hands.

I recently purchased my Nest thermostat from Amazon.com and was very enthusiastic about setting it up so that I could have some remote control ability of my heating/cooling system. When I opened the box and read the instructions, it wasn't as easy as it initially seemed (apparently my system was recommended for a pro install per the Nest instructions). Not wanting to damage my system and Nest thermostat, I called Beach Cities Mechanical office and spoke with their helpful phone technician about my situation and told them that I needed someone to install it for me. I was told about how long it would take to install, about their past experience with Nest installs (both simple and complex) and was told that they would have next day availability to come out to my house. I spoke with Travis Knight (I presume one of the owners) about my situation. He was very understanding of me, reassured me of his own personal experience with installation of Nest thermostats and gave me the confidence that his company knew what they were doing. Now, after all is said and done, I have my Nest thermostat up and running without problems. It took very little time for it to be installed and its function verified! I am very pleased with their services and would highly recommend them to anyone looking for competent, friendly and reassuring technicians. Tim

I loved working with Hyeco Air. They came to my house to move the HVAC Furnace from my garage to the attic. Many company's said it could not be done off the bat (maybe it was too much work for them and they wanted quick money.) Assurance: Hyeco Air came to my house, assessed th e job and assured me that the job could be done. Efficiency: He was highly efficient as it took him just 1 day to disconnect everything from the garage, move it to the attic and reconnect everything back. A job that takes some company's a couple days. Professionalism: Hyeco Air was punctual and professional. He provided astute input on how the process would be, and his recommendations. Value: I am a firm believer of paying for good work. I had no doubt that Hyeco's work was going to be anything less. His price was great for my budget.

Extremely happy with the evaluation of my HVAC system and duct work prior to talking about price and the proposed new system. We were given multiple options and everything was very well explained. Install went well and since we installed during a cold weekend, Ken scheduled to come back out once it gets warmer to fine tune the AC portion of the system. Ken truly cares about his trade and it shows.

Had multiple contractors come out to give us an evaluation/quote on our HVAC system. Everyone except TJ came in and started telling me what I needed without listening to what my problems and issues were with the system. TJ took the time to listen to what my issues were and recommended a couple solutions to fix. We ultimately replaced the entire system (compressor, furnace, etc) and added a new duct line and vent register. TJ rerouted the gas line to our furnace, relocated and hung the furnace in our attic, installed a smart thermostat in a new location, and more. His crew is very friendly and they all work quickly. They leave the work site cleaner than when they arrived which is so nice. Their quotes are very reasonable compared to what the other contractors were quoting. TJ even checked in the next week after everything was complete to make sure I was happy with the new system! I would highly recommend giving TJ a call for any and all of your HVAC needs.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who fixes furnaces?

If your furnace needs to be repaired, you’ll want to find a qualified heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) repair technician. Each state has its own licensing requirements; some require all HVAC technicians to have an HVAC license, while others only require someone operating an HVAC service and installation company with employees to hold a contractor’s license. For example, in Alabama, the Alabama Board of Heating Air Conditioning, and Refrigeration Contractors regulates licensing, while in Kansas there is no state regulatory body and HVAC licensing can vary by region. For simple furnace repairs like changing out a filter, a trusted handyman can probably handle the job, but a trained professional should be hired for tasks like replacing a gas valve, installing a new inducer fan motor or other critical furnace repair jobs that involve dealing with gas leaks or other dangerous conditions. How often should you get your air ducts cleaned?

How often you should clean your air ducts depends on your situation. If you or someone in the home has asthma or is acutely allergic to certain airborne materials or pollen, regular duct cleaning may be helpful. The Environmental Protection Agency doesn’t have an official position on the necessity of air duct cleaning unless the ducts have been contaminated by rodents, insects or mold, or you are aware of particles blowing out through the vents. The EPA recommends you have your air ducts cleaned on an as-needed basis. The National Air Duct Cleaners Association (NADCA) suggests having air ducts cleaned every three to five years.

Be cautious with companies that offer “whole house air duct cleaning,” urges the NADCA. The company may be using unscrupulous tactics to upsell you once they get started. Before any work begins, always clarify in writing what the job entails and what the cost will be. To protect yourself against fraud, read customer reviews and verify that your HVAC cleaning service has applicable licenses and certifications.

What is an HVAC system?

The letters in HVAC stand for heating, ventilation and air conditioning. An HVAC system enables you to regulate your home or building’s internal temperature (thermal control) for comfortable living and working. You can bring heat levels down in the summer and up in the winter, keeping your home or office livable year-round. HVAC systems can also help with humidity levels and regulate indoor air quality in a home or office. There are many types of HVAC systems and technologies available.

Many homes have a forced-air HVAC system. Both the heating and the central air conditioning units share a ductwork system where they either push in or pull out warm or cooled air. There are also heating and cooling systems that don’t require ductwork — such as ductless mini-splits — but work on the same principles of heat exchange. The national average to hire an HVAC specialist is $2,920-$3,670, with costs varying depending on the work you need done and the equipment you are installing.

Do you need to clean your air ducts?

Air duct cleaning is done by heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) professionals. The pros use industrial-strength, truck-mounted vacuums and powerful brushes and hoses to clean inside the metal ducts that make up your forced air heating and cooling system. The Environmental Protection Agency recommends duct cleaning if there is “substantial visible mold growth inside hard surface ducts, ducts that are infested with vermin such as rodents or insects, or ducts that are clogged with excessive amounts of dust and debris and/or particles are actually released into the home from your supply registers.”

You should also have air ducts cleaned after recent water contamination or water damage to prevent mold; after renovations or remodeling to ensure debris and dust didn’t settle in the vents and ducts; if you are having problems with allergies or asthma; or when you are moving into a newly purchased home, especially if the previous owners smoked or had pets. The National Air Duct Cleaners Association (NADCA) recommends getting your air ducts cleaned every three to five years, or every two to three years in regions where homeowners use their air conditioning and heater for many months of the year, while the EPA suggests homeowners have duct cleaning done as needed.

How many years does HVAC last?

The number of years an HVAC system lasts depend on the type and brand of components that make up your system. The lifespan of an air conditioner averages between 15 and 20 years. The life expectancy of a tankless water heater is approximately 20 years, while a storage water heater is closer to 10-15 years. Ducts may need replacing within 10-15 years. Your equipment will have a longer life if you have regular tuneups and maintenance to keep everything in good working order. If you’re having repair problems and your HVAC system is over 10 years old, it’s a good time to consider the costs and benefits of repairing vs. replacing. Energystar.gov provides the following tips to help you decide whether to repair or replace:

  • Your HVAC system needs frequent repairs and your energy bills are increasing.
  • Your cooling or heating equipment is less efficient.
  • Rooms in your home are too hot or too cold.
  • Your heat pump or air conditioner is more than 10 years old.
    • Replacing your system with an Energy Star-certified unit could save up to 20 percent on your heating and cooling bills.
  • Your furnace or boiler is more than 15 years old.
    • You may choose to replace your system with an Energy Star-certified furnace (which is 15 percent more efficient than a conventional furnace) or an Energy Star-certified boiler (which is 5 percent more efficient).
  • Your home has humidity problems.
  • Your home has excessive dust.
    • Leaky ducts can pull particles and air from attics, crawl spaces and basements and distribute them throughout your house. Sealing your ducts may be a solution.
  • Your heating or cooling system is noisy.
    • You could have an undersized duct system or a problem with the indoor coil of your cooling equipment.
  • Your score on the Home Energy Yardstick is below five.
    • That means your home energy use is above average and you're probably paying too much for your utilities.
