Powerhouse provides value for the work performed, and they are flexible. Originally, we were going to refinish the floors in four rooms, but we discovered that we were happier with having one room refinished, and the other three rooms carpeted. The company was able to accommodate our desires. We dealt with nine different people associated with Powerhouse including people who analyzed the ability to * Remove squeaks without damaging underlying hardwood floors (not possible); * Floor refinisher; * Molding installers; * Estimate carpeting size; * Minimize the amount of carpeting to select; * Selecting the carpet that best fit our needs; * Purchasing carpet and padding (different vendors); * Carpet installation; * Cleaning; and * Moving heavy furniture, as needed. There were little things that needed to be adjusted, and Michael oversaw different crews who worked with us to make the required adjustments. Personnel were courteous, knew their business, kept appointments, and did neat work. Prices were reasonable. We will use them again. The following is not related to Powerhouse, but are two hints that may be useful to you: 1. If you refinish your floors, there is considerable smell from the varnish. If you leave wet coffee grounds in the room, and baking soda in a separate dish, it will help to absorb the smell. 2. I painted one of the rooms myself, and I found that using the new high-quality 3/8" nap rollers did not work as well as using Purdy rollers.

We needed a security door installed to a metal frame. Jerry came out and looked at the job and told us what supplies we would need, gave us a reasonable quote, arrived early to the job, worked hard, and did a good job.

Jeff did an absolutely fabulous job installing barn door hardware to hang an existing vintage door in our tiny historic district home. He was an excellent communicator both before the job and during. He accommodated our tight schedule to complete the job, provided a workable solution to a minor installation snag, and the end product is even better than I had imagined. High quality workmanship! Definitely would hire again!

Marty did an excellent job sealing the foundation cracks around our house and patching a large gap under the threshold of our side garage door. He also gave us some pointers on home improvement issues regarding gutter installation. I would highly recommend Marty for your next home repair job.

It was great meeting Brian and we are very appreciative of his work. Despite a 50+ mile drive, he arrived right on time, and was very efficient. Within 1 hr, our driveway was spotless and free of debris. We look forward to working with Brian again.

Herndan installed a new redwood fence at my house that is 120ft long x 6ft tall. The estimates from the local fence companies came in between 5 & 6K. Herndan did the job at 2K plus material at cost. Saved me $$$ and was built in 2 days with hard digging. We are very happy with Herndan and the great job he did.

Bruce did a great job. He was chill, and very professional. He installed our 2 cat doors just how we wanted them. While he was there he also fixed several other things we had around the house that we had been wanting get done & for a very fair price. He also was respectful & cleaned up after himself. Thank you Bruce!

Ken was prompt and extremely helpful. As a single woman I wasn't able to install my screen door by myself. Ken was willing to drive to the store with me to pick the door up and install it for me.

Danny rewired my bathroom remodel and installed a new silent exhaust fan. He completed the job to the time and dollar quoted. I am extremely happy the quality of his work. And beyond all of this, Danny is very pleasant to work with.

Mike, did an awesome job on installing my doors. He even fixed an existing door free of charge. He said he would be here between 930 and 10 and called to let me know he was running a little late from his previous job. I really liked that as I feel my time is valuable and believe on letting the person know if you are running late. I really liked his quality of work and did the doors exactly as I had asked him to do. I even asked him for another bid on some repair work on the outside of my house. Looking forward to working with him again

Our first experience with Troy was in 2009 when he worked on our bedroom extension and remodel of the master bath at our home in Grand Terrace, CA. The entire job took about 6 weeks as we had to remove a patio and deck in the process. From start to finish, Troy was professional in his work and very easy to talk to and make decisions with. He did an excellent job with the framing and roofing as well as the installation of new bathroom fixtures and tile work, both in the tub area and the flooring. If there was something we questioned or asked to have done differently (i.e., taking back a bathtub to replace it with a larger, soaking tub), Troy was always accommodating and happy to do what we wanted. When that project was completed, Troy framed and installed a new deck and sidewalk in our backyard.Over the next four years, we had more projects that we called Troy for help with and he was always ready and willing to come take a look, give a bid, and tackle the work. We had him install attic fans in the house, make and install shutters on the front windows, and paint our house. The work was always done to our satisfaction and we miss being able to call him for work we'd like to have done as he is no longer in southern CA.We highly recommend Troy Malley as a professional handyman whose work is exemplary. Mel did GREAT work. He showed up 15 minutes early, which I appreciated and didn't stop working for 9 hours! He finished painting my bathroom, hung a new light fixture and medicine cabinet. That was all that was originally requested. When I asked if he could install the new towel bar and glass shelf (which involved drilling into tile), he graciously did that too. As a finishing touch, he caulked the top of my baseboards and really made the bathroom complete. My original contractor who did the remodel wasn't one for finishing touches but Mel pulled it all together for me and I'm so happy I called him!

Duane came to my home and moved a new dryer into my wash room. But first he had to install and connect the propane line. He was very efficient, cleaned up after himself and test it to make sure there was no leak. I will call him again for help on other projects I have around my home,

Pablo was very responsive to the work that I needed done and arrived on time and ready to go. The wiring in this old house has created some problems for me but he was able to complete all the Dimmers, Switches and installed the ceiling fan in in less than 3 hours. Work quality was excellent and I will definitely use him for the future work we have planned. Thanks Pablo !

Dago was prompt to give an estimate and very personable. He removed an old window on the second story and replaced it with a very heavy new one. He did this on the afternoon of the day he gave the bid. I couldn't be happier with the work and will highly reccomend him to my friends.

I hired Steve to excavate and grade a large section of my driveway. He provided a detailed explanation of what the work required, the costs, and the time it would take to perform the work. Every aspect of his performance exceeded my expectations and I was exceptionally pleased with the end product. This is in sharp contrast with most of my prior dealings with local contractors. I would highly recommend Steve Neft for virtually any project. He was honest and very straightforward in all of his dealings with me. I was thrilled with the outcome.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good handyman?

Finding a good handyman can change your life. Within days, the endless list of insurmountable tasks that were either out of your skill range or impossible to fit into your busy schedule can be completed. If you know you want help but aren’t sure how to hire the right pro, ask these questions to find the right fit:

    • What is your work experience? If you are putting in a tile backsplash, you want someone experienced with the task, not someone who generally does painting and junk removal.
    • How much do you charge? Handymen often charge hourly rates that vary based on the complexity of the task they’re hired to do, as well as flat rates for standard jobs. Be clear about what they’ll charge before you hire them.
      • On that note, discuss payment details. It’s wise not to pay all the money up front, especially for larger projects. You may be able to pay a deposit for materials and pay the remainder upon project completion.
    • How long will the job take you to complete? If the handyman is as busy as you are and a fence repair is going to take months, you should probably find another qualified handyman for the job.

Read client reviews and follow up with references to make sure you’re choosing the right handyman for your projects. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

    What does a handyman do?

A handyman is a skilled laborer who provides basic home repairs. Anyone can call themselves a handyman, although most who do so are skilled with repairs and home projects. Reading reviews is a good way to determine their fitness for your job. The tasks a handyman can perform include assembling furniture, painting interiors and exteriors, repairing fences, repairing broken doors or replacing trim, hanging lights, hooking up appliances, and much more. Handymen may have flat fees for certain services, or charge an hourly rate. Handyman rates are often lower than those of a contractor, as they don’t have the same specialization. Some states have no limit on the work a handyman can perform, while others do. For example, California’s Building and Professions Code section 7048 (small operations) permits handymen to provide work similar to that of a contractor (floor installation, painting, etc.) provided the total cost of labor and materials does not exceed $500. A handyman is a great resource for minor home repairs at a lower cost than a licensed contractor, but for more complex projects, it pays to hire a specialized contractor. Fore more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How much does a handyman charge?

The national average rate for handyman jobs is $90-$160. A handyman performs general maintenance and repairs for residential and commercial properties. A handyman may charge a flat fee for standard services that take a predictable amount of time, such as installing a new appliance, as well as an hourly rate for larger projects such as digging out and replacing a rotted fence post. A cost-saving strategy when hiring a handyman is to bundle all the tasks you want them to do into one visit to make the most of any minimum service fee. Hourly rates for a handyman can average $50-$100 per hour. Pricing will depend on skill and experience required for the job, as well as regional labor rates. Here are a few examples of average handyman flat rates.

    • Attic ladder replacement: $150.
    • Toilet replacement: $75.
    • Ceiling fan and light fixtures: $75.
    • Faucet replacement: $125.
    • Garbage disposal: $75.

    Can a handyman do plumbing?

In some states, a handyman can provide plumbing services, but it may be in your best interest to call a plumber, particularly for issues more major than unclogging a drain or attaching a new sink. Hiring a plumber is important because mishandling your water and gas lines has the potential to do great damage to your home, your family’s health, or even the safety of your neighborhood. A handyman is not legally required to have any training or licensing in plumbing matters, while a licensed plumber has undergone years of education and on-the-job training. In some cases, homeowners insurance won’t cover damage caused by plumbing repair done by an unlicensed handyman.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, most plumbers learn their trade through a four- or five-year apprenticeship with 2,000 hours of paid on-the-job training. They also receive classroom education including “safety, local plumbing codes and regulations, and blueprint reading. They also study mathematics, applied physics, and chemistry. After completing an apprenticeship program, plumbers … are considered to be journey workers, qualifying them to perform duties on their own,” according to the DOL. Licensed plumbers should do continuing education to keep abreast of safety and technology changes. Poor plumbing can lead to sewage backups, a flooded home or even natural gas leaks, so it’s best to leave it in the hands of a specialized professional.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
