Simply the best! I found Mayra via Thumbtack just over a week before my wedding. I sourced some images of looks that I liked so we had something to work with. Mayra did a trial with me a few days after we first communicated. What attracted me to Mayra were the reviews, and her gallery of images. On the trail the first look she did had me worried as it wasn't what I felt comfortable with, but I told her what I didn't like and she toned it down and I felt much more comfortable. I did tell her that on the wedding day I would like to tone down the look further. My wedding was a very small intimate affair. There were only 3 other ladies in my bridal party (three of us of West Indian heritage and one of European parentage) I asked Mayra to do the make-up for all four of us, with two of use requiring hair styling. Mayra said she would bring a team with her. My hair is in sister locs, and the other lady required a blow out (European heritage). I had photo images of the hair style I had in mind, and the stylist Mayra brought with her who did my hair could not have done a better job. She was able to recreate the hair style to suit me. It's just over a week since I was married and although I've yet to see the official wedding photos, I have seen the candid snaps of the day and I have to say that Mayra and her team did a fantastic job on myself and my bridal party. We all look like ourselves - but just that bit better. They were able to enhance our natural beauty. Mayra and team were professional in their demeanor, timely in their arrival, and friendly. I am so grateful to Thumbtack for this wonderful service, and feel truly blessed in finding Mayra. She is simply the best!

Rose is the best! She's an amazing professional, with unmatched quality of service and efficiency! She made me look 30 years younger on my wedding day (yup, that's what everyone told me). I couldn't have had a better hair stylist and make up artist! She's truly heaven-sent. I highly recommend her, and I'm blessed to have her get me ready for my Big Day! What an absolute treat!!!!

After a local thumbtack "pro" cancelled on me a week before my sisters wedding I was hesitant to put out another request, but when I did Cassandra responded within minutes assuring me that she was reliable and licenced. After reading over her profile and checking out her (amazing) website and photos I was still hesitant to send any money for a deposit before service, so she offered to meet my sister & I (at no cost) in Palo Alto for coffee. Once we met her we were so happy we did! I don't know where we would have been without Cassandra and her amazing team but I don't want to know ! They are truly worth every penny. . Being a man I didn't understand how makeup could cost over $100 (the other gal quoted $60 without a contract but flaked!) Cassandra was actually excited to explain all that goes into what she does from the training, contracts, travel, business expenses and her top-of-the-line makeup and hair products. At the end I felt confident my money was going to a good company. My sister loves makeup and was simply blown away with Cassandra's expertise with makeup, skincare and her overall career background in the makeup world. We can't thank Cassandra enough for her work and impact on our family and friends and we wish her the best in her Mobile Styling start-up. She knows we will do anything we can to help her because I know she'll give the best advice and price within the beauty industry. Thanks Cassandra, Robert F. Smith

Jacqueline is the sweetest person. She came earlier than the scheduled time and we went over what I wanted. I was attending a wedding and my makeup was done so beautiful and I looked glamorous. I had so many compliments and guess what. , even with the 114 degrees of heat, my makeup stayed fresh all day and night. I did not want to clean my face before going to bed😀 I recommend Star High Beauty to everyone!!!

As a former magazine beauty editor and now on-air beauty expert, I've worked with tons of makeup artists over the years. I met Liv when she did my makeup for my sister-in-law's Napa wedding, and since then, she's been one of my favorites. I loved how she made my skin look flawless and glowy without caking on the product. She chose beautiful neutral shadows that magically made my eyes appear bluer and bigger than ever. I highly recommend Liv. She'll make you look like the prettiest version of yourself.

Jaiya has cut my hair for years and has always done an exceptional job. She reliably performs the same cut when I want it and I've never been afraid to trust her with something new when the inspiration hit. She has also fixed cuts when I have had to get my hair cut by other stylists. Jaiya is a very visual person and can both listen and communicate about the shape of a cut. She is attentive to detail and is very conscientious. She is also a warm and gracious person which always makes getting a haircut a more enjoyable experience. I regularly recommend her to my friends!

Imani did an amazing job with my makeup for a wedding I was in. My makeup was so natural looking, yet she enhanced me in ways I’ve never seen. She was also very personable, knowledgeable, and fast (considering she had to do the makeup of 7 women within an limited amount of time).

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    What is a hair extension?

A hair extension is a beauty product designed to give you the appearance of longer and/or fuller hair. Hair extensions are made of synthetic material or real human hair and are attached to your natural hair by a variety of techniques such as a weave (sewing), hot fusion, tape-in, cold fusion, bonding, metal clips, micro ring or micro loops, and more. The type of technique you select as well as the quality and volume of the hair you choose all affect cost. Hair extensions can last anywhere from three weeks to six months, depending on the application technique. For example, tape-in extensions may last approximately four weeks, while extensions applied using a hot fusion technique may stay in for up to six months. The hot fusion technique takes longer, costs more, and requires more training on the part of the hair stylist, but the result is more natural-looking extensions that can be washed and heat-styled with confidence.

    What is a mobile hairdresser?

A mobile hairdresser is a cosmetologist trained to cut, color and style hair who can provide hairdressing services at remote locations. Often, mobile hairdressers are hired for events such as weddings, bachelorette parties, prom night, birthdays and other occasions. The hairstylist can come to your location to do your hair, or provide hairstyling for your group.

For events, mobile hairstylists more often provide updos and formal styles than highlights or hair color. Mobile hairdressers bring all the necessary hairstyling tools and products such as lotions and sprays to create your look. The national average cost for a hairstylist is $70-$110. Pricing for different services can vary greatly depending on stylist reputation, training and regional rates. For example, haircuts could range between $35 and $150, while hair coloring services could range in price from $65 to $200. Some mobile hairstylists may include the cost of travel in their fees, while other may have it as an added charge, such as 50 cents to $1 for each mile beyond their standard service range.

How do you choose the right makeup artist for your wedding?

A wedding makeup artist can ensure a flawless look on your big day. Finding the perfect person isn’t all about price, though. Here are tips for choosing the right makeup artist for your wedding:

    • Research before reaching out. Wedding makeup artists should have an online presence with portfolios of their work. Find someone with an aesthetic you love.
    • Read reviews. You want a wedding makeup artist who’ll be on time, do beautiful work, and add a positive vibe to your day. Pay attention if previous clients report bad experiences with a makeup artist.
    • Consider skin tones. If your bridal party has a range of skin tones, make sure your wedding makeup artist and assistants are experienced and talented working with everyone.
    • Is your top pick available on your date? If so, put down a deposit to secure their services.
    • Confirm rates and payment. Clearly discuss prices and payment plans, and sign a detailed contract so there are no surprises on your wedding day.

Do I need a makeup artist for my wedding?

There are no rules around your wedding day, and that means it’s your choice whether to have a wedding makeup artist. If you’re on the fence about hiring a wedding makeup artist, consider the pros and cons. Some women decide against a wedding makeup artist to save money. The national average cost for a wedding makeup artist is $70-$100, which is an expense some women prefer to do without. Other women just don’t love wearing makeup. Some brides have friends or family members who are talented makeup artists willing to provide their services. If you choose not to have a wedding makeup artist, be sure to do at least two trial runs of your makeup look well before the wedding day to avoid any morning-of panic.

On the other hand, a wedding makeup artist can make the bride feel pampered and confident, giving her a flawless, fabulous look for the ceremony and reception and in wedding photos. For brides who are uncomfortable with heavy makeup, many wedding makeup artists usually excel at the natural look. Many brides consider wedding makeup part of the ritual and tradition of the ceremony, a shared experience with the entire bridal party. Ultimately your choice of whether to hire a wedding makeup artist should be based on what will make you feel most confident and happy.

How much should you tip a hairstylist?

A hairstylist can provide you with a cut, color or highlights, or style your hair for an event. The national average cost for a hairstylist is $70-$110, but prices can vary greatly depending on the service you receive, where you live, and the salon’s or hairdresser’s reputation. A good rule of thumb is to tip your hairstylist 20 percent of your total bill. In smaller towns, 15 percent may be the norm, but in larger cities 20 percent is generally the baseline. If you frequent a salon where the shampooer, colorist, and hair cutter are all different people, you can divide that 20 percent among those service providers in proportion to the skill level and time required to do their job. Many hairstylists rent a chair from the salon and must pay a monthly rent to the salon owner.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
