Sat delivered the most incredible service and food for our New Year's Eve dinner party. He showed up earlier than he needed just in case we needed help with anything (such as table setting - thank you for the napkin lesson, Sat!). He was flexible with changing start times, and had the timing for courses worked out perfectly once we sat down for dinner. Leading up to the dinner, he was always extremely responsive to my messages, helpful with the menu, and flexible on changing guest count. I couldn't recommend him more highly, and can't wait to work with him again.

Debbie provided food and drink for our memorial for my husband. I think there were about 80 (possibly more) attendees and the food, service and set up and clean up were perfect. Debbie arrived in plenty of time, set up soundlessly and I can give her a rave review. She is lovely to work with.

I've worked with many professionals over the years, most of whom have done perfectly adequate work. Once in a while I find someone who does work far beyond my expectations. Those are my rare five-star reviews. Steve Goldstone of DNL Catering is one of those outstanding professionals. He’s cooked for me on a number of occasions, but it was a family birthday celebration he catered in under somewhat challenging circumstances for us some months ago that impressed me enough to take the time to write this review. The guest of honor had requested an outdoors brunch at a remote spot in a park in the East Bay, on what turned out to be one of the hottest days of the entire summer. The heat was already well over 100° before the guests arrived, and I was very concerned how that was going to affect the food and service.  I didn’t need to worry.  Despite the location, everything was set up on time and ready before the guests arrived.  The overall look was very attractive and appetizing, with a classic picnic look. All of the food was maintained at the right temperature throughout. Cold food & beverages were thoroughly chilled; all hot items were hot and fresh, nothing limp or lukewarm. Steve worked with me to come up with a menu which succeeded in pleasing both the vegetarian guest of honor and all of the meat eaters. (In fact, my husband tried for weeks afterward to get me to duplicate the main dish!) Portions of everything were more than adequate. Steve stayed on top of everything throughout the event, and was unfailingly pleasant & helpful.  He even took a few minutes during a lull in service to help my son untangle his kite from a tree, which I thought was really going above & beyond the call of duty!  I can say without the slightest hesitation that Steve is the first person I will call for any event I need catered in the future.

My experience with Deborah for a professional business meeting was top notch. Prompt, plenty of food, catered to a picky audience (gluten free one person, another no tomatoes, another no cheese, bla bla bla). Everyone was impressed with the food, and the service. Many thanks. And it kept on giving, that night my 14 yr old freshman reminded me that it was his turn in Adviser session to bring snacks, so Wallah! - Bunt Cake to the rescue. It also turned out that another Advisor was not there and instead of the normal 8 - 10 kids they had two groups and only ONE treat. Again Bunt Cake to the rescue - he and 18 kids demolished that cake at school today and it was PERFECT! The salmon was divine - from the local fish market, and the desert, fresh peach and strawberry cobbler with homeade whip cream we are still eating.... Can't write a better story. I gave the Donuts to the staff and right now am eating cheeses and Kelly left for an evening meeting and discovered the left over pasta, so she's off with it, and we all had the rest of the salmon for dinner last night (except what's in the fridge). Masterful job! All ended well. thanks again from us all John

I've known Grace for many years. I have been over to her house for home cooked meals that were truly gourmet, and delicious. She also prepared some food and sold it from her home. On the level of catering for large parties, I went to our friend Dave's party last month were Grace did the catering. The food was flawless, delicious, with great presentation, and great variety. I strongly recommend Grace for catering your events.

Daniella did a great job for my family. we had two events a memorial for my mother-in-law and a Thanksgiving meal for the family the following day since we were all in town. From the time we were contacted by Daniella through Thumbtack and started to discuss the events Daniella was very helpful and flexible. We have a couple vegan diets in the family and Daniella came up with wonderful dishes for them, everyone enjoyed. I have no hesitation in recommending Daniella to anyone planning a special event. And just a bit on my background I have over 45 years in the food service field.

A friend raved about the quality of food and service that was provided by John DeMartini Catering. Without hesitation I called John and asked him to come up with a grazing menu for a cocktail party I was having for 40 women at my home. Not only did he provide a yummy and beautiful array of appetizers and desserts to feed a crowd, he made it so easy! I just opened the door. His service was fantastic and the food left you craving for an extra bite or two or three! This is my go to caterer from now on.

The food, service and presentation were all exceptional and we still have guest speaking on the delicious yet healthy meals Green Chow Down prepared. I highly recommend booking this restaurant for any event.

James was so easy to work with, and provided a ton of flexibility in our menu based on a few rounds of requests for changes. Our meal was delicious, and hiring James let us have an amazing time at our own party instead of being tucked away in the kitchen ourselves. We really enjoyed his food and his company!

There were 4 couples celebrating several 50th Birthdays and Zachary created the menu and prepared the food for all of us. The thought and time he put into the menu as well as the overall preparation were outstanding. Everyone in the group felt the same way. My only suggestion would be to hire an assistant, someone to help with food prep and table lay out, that way he can continue to focus on cooking and possibly move the night along a little better. Still having said that, overall it was a great experience and if we ever go back to Napa again we will be calling Zachary!!

Dan helped me throw a surprise party. Not only did he make delicious food, but also had everything ready to go for guests before I even arrived with the guest of honor. He also accommodated dietary restrictions, left the kitchen super clean and even packed up the few leftovers for our refrigerator. We ate the Vietnam-inspired menu. Highly recommend!

Avocado and Company did a wonderful job catering a birthday party for ~50 people at our house in Mtn View. We did passed appetizers, buffet brunch/lunch, and bar service. From the start, Ryan and Laurence were great to work with -- after a brief discussion via phone he came up with a great menu, and was always responsive to my questions. For the day-of event, Jonny and the staff were amazing. Our guests raved about the whole day. Most notably: - Food and service were fantastic. - They were on-time and extremely efficient. When they left, you wouldn't have known anyone was here. - The entire staff was professional and super friendly.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good caterer?

Reviews, interviews and menu tastings will help you find the right catering choice for your big day. Start by screening possible wedding caterers based on past reviews. If a caterer you are interested in has a review that concerns you, ask them about it; how they respond will be very telling. Next, ask about their availability for your wedding date.

If the wedding caterer is available on your date, it’s time to talk about menus and prices. Be clear about what your maximum budget is find out what choices this will allow you. Caterers may custom-create a menu for your event, or they may have menu templates within different price ranges that can guide your decision. A clear budget gives the caterer clear parameters within which to work and offer creative suggestions. Schedule a menu tasting to confirm you love your wedding menu. Once you have a menu and date, and have paid a deposit to reserve the caterer’s services, confirm additional details including when the food will be delivered to the site, what kind of service will be provided, how many servers will be onsite and for how long, and who is responsible for setup and cleanup. The more specific your contract, the fewer worries you’ll have on your wedding day. Get more smart hiring tips here.

How much does wedding catering cost per person?

Wedding catering costs will always vary based on the number of guests you’re inviting, the menu you want to serve, and the way the food will be served to your guests. As you interview wedding catering companies, you’ll be presented with a cost per person for various menus. On the low end, wedding catering may cost approximately $15-$18 per person. This would include prepared food only, with no setup or service of any kind. The starting price for a simple buffet meal with minimal service typically averages $22 per person. Opting for the same menu with all organic ingredients could raise your costs to about $33 per person. A moderately upscale menu (finer ingredients, more elaborate presentation) could range from $24 to $34 per person. High-end wedding catering cost truly has no limit. Lobster, filet mignon, specialty seafood, organic ingredients — menu choices like these can boost your cost per person up to $150 and more.

What should you look for in a caterer?

A delicious meal is a critical element of a successful wedding, with happy guests fondly remembering your fabulous wedding food. The right caterer for you will be:

  • Available: Even the best caterer is no good if they aren’t available on your wedding date. Ask early before you get your heart set on someone.
  • Affordable for you: Find a caterer that you can afford. Having a spending plan ahead of time will mean you won’t overspend on food.
  • A good personality fit: Wedding planning is stressful, so work with someone that you can get along with and communicate with easily.
  • Experienced and recommended: Ensure the company has a proven track record with events of your size and the references to back it up.
  • Transparent about money: Steer clear of shady pricing. Find a caterer who is very clear about costs and is happy to talk you through budgets and pricing options.
  • Transparent about food: Find someone who is clear about where they source their food from and where it is prepared.

How much should catering cost for a wedding?

The cost of wedding catering will reflect the level of service, the menu you choose, the luxury you desire and the number of guests you invite. Where you live also plays a major role in your wedding catering costs. The regional cost to do business and local cost of food will affect your catering bill. There is no set price for wedding catering, because each wedding and each menu is different. This is why many caterers provide a per-person price. This allows you to break down what it costs to feed each person based on the menu you want. Working with your caterer, you can adjust menu items, service level and more to accommodate your budget and guest count. Keep in mind that wedding catering costs are not just for the food. The bill reflects all the components that go into commercial food catering: a commercial kitchen, ingredients, staff, insurance, marketing and more. Here are some examples of average costs:

  • Three-course plated meal, moderately upscale, for 125 in Los Angeles: $14,000. Because of staffing costs, a true plated meal costs about twice as much as a staff-assisted buffet.
  • Buffet meal, standard menu, for 100 in Los Angeles: $5,000.
  • Per-person cost for hors d'oeuvres, dinner and nonalcoholic beverages: $24–$37, depending on menu selection, in Southern California.
  • Drop off prepared food for 50: $1,000 in North Carolina. Price does not include any service, setup or breakdown.

How do you serve food at a wedding?

Food service at your wedding will affect your catering costs and influence the atmosphere of the reception. Buffet style is more informal; plated meals are a bit fancier; family style encourages sharing. Read about the different food service styles to select your preferred wedding catering choice.

  • Buffet: Caterers can drop off prepared foods for a DIY and budget-friendly buffet option where you set everything up and food is entirely self-service. For a fuller-service buffet, the caterers set up food, oversee the buffet throughout the event, and clean up afterwards. For food only, prices per person might average $16-$18, while a service buffet may start around $20-$22 per person. Adding food stations can increase per-person costs by at least $3-$5.
  • Family style: Servers bring large platters of food to guest tables in courses. It’s less formal (and less expensive) than a plated meal, but more formal and higher-cost than a buffet. You’ll need large tables to accommodate the platters, so plan accordingly when renting furniture for the event.
  • Plated: A plated event is a formal dining experience; waitstaff serve your seated guests for each course, fill their drinks, and attend to them throughout the dinner. A plated dinner is typically the most expensive option for both food and service.
  • Food trucks: Similar to buffets, with food trucks your guests get their own food and bring it to their table. A food truck gives a relaxed and playful vibe to your reception.
  • Cocktail reception: If you don’t want a formal seated dinner, you can opt for a wide assortment of passed appetizers at an extended cocktail hour reception.
