Jon is great. He got back to me immediately from the first response to the last. I hired him to trim this huge branch overhanging from my neighbors yard that had already lost two branches in the last storm and was threatening to drop another. He was on it and even promised to come rain or shine, and at a fair price. He and his worker were on time, cleaned up all the mess, hauled it away, and were very professional. Such a great experience and I'll call them again if I need additional tree service.

John was quick to respond with a quote and worked with me on a great deal for my two trees that needed trimming. He was able to schedule something a few days later which was great. He did a good job and cleaned up after. The only thing is that they used my green waste bucket for the small pieces when I needed that space for other yard work I was doing so I had to wait on that. Other than that, it was a great experience and I'd hire him again for any tree services needed.

OMG! AWESOME is the word for Mr. Mark Sanchez. I'm sitting here lost for words. Worried I might sound Corny. But it's true Mark did an outstanding job on my tree stumps removal. And fast from the very first contact. He came out on Friday took a look at my job and minutes after I had estimate and said he could do the job tomorrow Saturday( If it didn't rain). I was thinking after the Holidays, but Mark made me an offer I couldn't refuse. I was like Merry Christmas to me! Needless to say he was at my property Saturday right on time, explained to me what and how he was going to do the job. He also told me what I needed to do after the stump is removed. So I told Mark I was going to bank be right back, but I stopped at store and as I was in line my daughter called and said Marks done! Yup that fast! I hurried home and my front yard looked great!! No more ugly stump. I will most differently tell my friends and family how Professional, Fast and very Affordable Mr. Sanchez is. Thanks again Mark and Happy Holidays to you and yours.

Kevin with Always Green Tree Service was quick to respond with an estimate, arrived promptly to do an on site evaluation, then scheduled and completed the job the following week. I was updated throughout the process and the trees were expertly trimmed with all debris cleared and removed. I am very satidfied with the job, will hire Always Green again next year. Highly recommend.

Delta Charlie Sod- my goodness, what a pleasure to work with this amazing gentleman. My husband handled most of the communication with him, but I was told that he was highly responsive and an absolute pleasure to work with! He promised to have sod delivered to us by a certain time, and sure enough, we came home to work to find it neat and tidy, just as promised. Now, the quality of this sod was absolutely phenomenal! We decided to lay it ourselves, and our dog was in heaven. He couldn't stop smelling it and rolling on it. I'm pretty sure that heaven has a grassy field with the same quality grass for our furry friends when they cross the rainbow bridge- our dog is absolutely in love. The price of the sod was by far the most affordable for the super soft bluegrass that we wanted. We would definitely do business with Charles, again! :)

Dave helped me when I had a multi trunk oak fall on my house. He and his crew minimized any further damage to the house and got the tree trunks off the roof. He chipped the brush and stacked the wood like he said, in addition to answering all my texts and calls. I really appreciate Dave's business and plan to use his tree services on other jobs.

I am very satisfied with the tree removal service I received from Fernando at Duran Landscaping. He arrived as scheduled and began work immediately. He is a no-nonsense professional that takes both the customer's and his time seriously. He (and his crew) completed the job in 3 hours... I thought it would take a good part of the day. Cris is good - patient and can move quickly which I appreciated especially as it was a big project for me in terms of redoing the backyard area so his job was key in laying the irrigation, bringing framing the yard with headerboard and bringing 4 cu yards of soil to raise the elevation and keep planter areas for trees and the drip irrigation. It's probably best to outline the scope but he will work with you and I thing the pricing was fair considering I wanted to move quickly. He has come back out after to answer some questions and said he could help me with some trees and I look forward to hopefully working with Cris again.

Happy with AB service, work is efficient and service is at a reasonable cost. I'm having them mow lawn, trim edges of lawn and plants. Also have asked for trimming tree branches. Wish they would take away the yard refuse though.

We were very pleased with the great work, tree trimming and shaping done on our tree, that Justin and Rick did for us. They were very efficient and hardworking, and cleaned up after their work very nicely. They also are referring some associates for us for other home jobs that need to be done. We recommend them with high marks. Thanks, Justin and Rick!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a landscape contractor do?

Landscape contractors work from outdoor architectural or design plans to build and install hardscaping or softscaping for the client, much as a general contractor uses architectural designs to build a house. Landscape contractors are experts in soil drainage, grading, hardscaping (installing concrete paths and retaining wall, building ponds, etc.), and planting. They have heavy equipment such as excavators and tractors to prepare the land as needed.

Some landscape contractors are also landscape architects or landscape designers. The titles can be compared with those in home construction: A building or landscape architect must earn a specialized architecture degree and pass an exam to have a license. A designer — whether an interior designer or a landscape designer — does not usually require a license to work. Landscape contractors are not required by law to work from plans designed by a landscape architect, so you may work directly with the landscape contractor to specify the work you’d like done. The national average cost for large-scale landscaping projects is $10,160. Pricing can vary greatly depending on the project scope, materials and design.

How do you find a good landscape architect?

Hiring a landscape architect is an investment in your home. Landscaping can reduce water bills, improve your home resale value, add to your daily living experience and significantly boost curb appeal. A landscape architect will draw the designs for your new landscape; you’ll want to hire a landscape contractor to carry out the plans. Many companies provide design-build landscaping services, with a company architect creating plans for your vision and the landscape contractor executing the vision. With the proper academic background and licensing, a person can be both landscape architect and landscape contractor. Here are a few tips for finding a great landscape architect:

  • Research online portfolios and find several landscape architects whose work interests you.
  • Read online reviews of client experiences.
  • Research whether the landscape architects you are interested in are currently licensed and in good standing with the licensing board, and check whether any complaints have been issued against them. Each state will have their own searchable database. For example, you can search for California landscape architects via the state’s Department of Consumer Affairs.
  • Request bids from your selected landscape architects.
  • Hire the one you like the most, taking care to have a clearly written contract outlining scope of work.

What should you look for when hiring a landscaper?

Landscaping can be costly — though it usually pays off in curb appeal and home resale value — so finding a landscaper who is worth the investment is important. When hiring a landscaper, look for proven success with the type of results you want. For example, if you know you want a drought-tolerant yard, research websites, reviews and portfolios that showcase beautiful drought-tolerant yards that the landscaper has installed. In addition to relevant experience, you’ll want to find a landscape contractor who has good client reviews. Good communication skills are another important quality in a landscape contractor, since everything from plant selection to hardscape installation needs to be discussed and agreed upon. A landscape contractor who is reliable, easy to understand and able to listen to what you want will help make the process seamless and enjoyable.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
