Jon is great. He got back to me immediately from the first response to the last. I hired him to trim this huge branch overhanging from my neighbors yard that had already lost two branches in the last storm and was threatening to drop another. He was on it and even promised to come rain or shine, and at a fair price. He and his worker were on time, cleaned up all the mess, hauled it away, and were very professional. Such a great experience and I'll call them again if I need additional tree service.

John was quick to respond with a quote and worked with me on a great deal for my two trees that needed trimming. He was able to schedule something a few days later which was great. He did a good job and cleaned up after. The only thing is that they used my green waste bucket for the small pieces when I needed that space for other yard work I was doing so I had to wait on that. Other than that, it was a great experience and I'd hire him again for any tree services needed.

Mark and his brother did exactly what we hoped they would, “winterizing” our Chinese Pistach, overgrown orange tree, and three Crepe Myrtles. The trees all look much better, and we couldn’t have asked for more in terms of clean up. We took 8 bids for this work; Mark’s price was very reasonable. We will absolutely call on him again to care for our trees.

Kevin with Always Green Tree Service was quick to respond with an estimate, arrived promptly to do an on site evaluation, then scheduled and completed the job the following week. I was updated throughout the process and the trees were expertly trimmed with all debris cleared and removed. I am very satidfied with the job, will hire Always Green again next year. Highly recommend.

Sprinkler lines were broken in 2 places due to tree removal. Jose found and fixed both places, cleaned up afterwards and checked all stations to be sure they worked properly. He was late to arrive, but did good work when he arrived. Seems to know his business. I would definitely call him again.

Juan does a great job! I've had Juan work at my house a few times and also referred him to family members and friends. He's trimmed my trees, removed trees, and laid new sod. He's very responsive and reliable. I will use Juan for all my tree service needs.

Benito came and tore out old grass and tree roots that were left over from a tree removal we had done. He then replaced all our sprinkler heads and added to our existing sprinkler to be able to maintain our new grass he put in. In total he put almost 1000 square feet of grass. It looks awesome and he was professional, friendly, gave us a great bid and had it done in 2 days. Thank you.

Delta Charlie did an excellent job on the full POPI of my lawn. Very responsive, reasonable rates and great attention to detail. Charles kept me informed every step of the way. The crew worked around a tree and the kids play structure no problem. They made sure all the sprinklers were working properly afterwards and did a thorough clean-up. Highly recommended.

Outstanding customer service from the exceptionally reasonable initial estimate to the final care and clean-up. Kimo came out said the job was actually very easy (the removal of a single 20' tree), and cut the initial on-line estimate in half. Two days later, my tree was gone, and the clean-up so excellent there wasn't a fleck of sawdust left. Not to mention that the job was done for what I consider pocket change compared to the other estimates I got. I will recommend Wright Landscape and Design to anyone I know who needs future landscaping work done. Nice job!

I am very satisfied with the tree removal service I received from Fernando at Duran Landscaping. He arrived as scheduled and began work immediately. He is a no-nonsense professional that takes both the customer's and his time seriously. He (and his crew) completed the job in 3 hours... I thought it would take a good part of the day. I am definitely using Duran Landscaping for all my future tree and landscaping needs. I highly recommend him... you won't be disappointed.

Cris is good - patient and can move quickly which I appreciated especially as it was a big project for me in terms of redoing the backyard area so his job was key in laying the irrigation, bringing framing the yard with headerboard and bringing 4 cu yards of soil to raise the elevation and keep planter areas for trees and the drip irrigation. It's probably best to outline the scope but he will work with you and I thing the pricing was fair considering I wanted to move quickly. He has come back out after to answer some questions and said he could help me with some trees and I look forward to hopefully working with Cris again.

Happy with AB service, work is efficient and service is at a reasonable cost. I'm having them mow lawn, trim edges of lawn and plants. Also have asked for trimming tree branches. Wish they would take away the yard refuse though.

We were very pleased with the great work, tree trimming and shaping done on our tree, that Justin and Rick did for us. They were very efficient and hardworking, and cleaned up after their work very nicely. They also are referring some associates for us for other home jobs that need to be done. We recommend them with high marks. Thanks, Justin and Rick!

Chris, was great, showed up and did a great job destroying the huge ugly eye sore of a tree stump in my front yard. And cleaned up after. Will use again.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a landscape contractor do?

Landscape contractors work from outdoor architectural or design plans to build and install hardscaping or softscaping for the client, much as a general contractor uses architectural designs to build a house. Landscape contractors are experts in soil drainage, grading, hardscaping (installing concrete paths and retaining wall, building ponds, etc.), and planting. They have heavy equipment such as excavators and tractors to prepare the land as needed.

Some landscape contractors are also landscape architects or landscape designers. The titles can be compared with those in home construction: A building or landscape architect must earn a specialized architecture degree and pass an exam to have a license. A designer — whether an interior designer or a landscape designer — does not usually require a license to work. Landscape contractors are not required by law to work from plans designed by a landscape architect, so you may work directly with the landscape contractor to specify the work you’d like done. The national average cost for large-scale landscaping projects is $10,160. Pricing can vary greatly depending on the project scope, materials and design.

How do you find a good landscape architect?

Hiring a landscape architect is an investment in your home. Landscaping can reduce water bills, improve your home resale value, add to your daily living experience and significantly boost curb appeal. A landscape architect will draw the designs for your new landscape; you’ll want to hire a landscape contractor to carry out the plans. Many companies provide design-build landscaping services, with a company architect creating plans for your vision and the landscape contractor executing the vision. With the proper academic background and licensing, a person can be both landscape architect and landscape contractor. Here are a few tips for finding a great landscape architect:

  • Research online portfolios and find several landscape architects whose work interests you.
  • Read online reviews of client experiences.
  • Research whether the landscape architects you are interested in are currently licensed and in good standing with the licensing board, and check whether any complaints have been issued against them. Each state will have their own searchable database. For example, you can search for California landscape architects via the state’s Department of Consumer Affairs.
  • Request bids from your selected landscape architects.
  • Hire the one you like the most, taking care to have a clearly written contract outlining scope of work.

What should you look for when hiring a landscaper?

Landscaping can be costly — though it usually pays off in curb appeal and home resale value — so finding a landscaper who is worth the investment is important. When hiring a landscaper, look for proven success with the type of results you want. For example, if you know you want a drought-tolerant yard, research websites, reviews and portfolios that showcase beautiful drought-tolerant yards that the landscaper has installed. In addition to relevant experience, you’ll want to find a landscape contractor who has good client reviews. Good communication skills are another important quality in a landscape contractor, since everything from plant selection to hardscape installation needs to be discussed and agreed upon. A landscape contractor who is reliable, easy to understand and able to listen to what you want will help make the process seamless and enjoyable.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
