I've had the privilege of working with David Foster for the last 5 years and I am continually impressed by his intelligent and vast amount of knowledge. Since middle of 8th grade to graduating high school, I have primarily come to David for help in math from pre-algebra all the way up to AP Calculus, however I've also thrown a diverse number of subjects in our weekly hour, from Physics, AP English, AP Environmental Science, AP Biology, and even Spanish. No matter the subject, after a tutoring session with Mr. Foster, I have always walked out feeling confident that I have the ability to understand my homework and perform well on tests and quizzes. He is an excellent teacher that breaks down complicated concepts into something simple and understandable, especially in AP Calculus. Along with being highly qualified as a tutor, he also truly cares about the success of his students, even going as far to offer me extra resources like study guides and "cheat sheets" for helping me remember theorems, formulas etc., which have been invaluable for AP tests. Over the years I have learned a lot from him, more than just school work but also how to success in my future academic career as I go off in college. He believes in teaching theory of the subject over just only doing practice problems which have seriously improved me as a student, not only in my boost of grades but also my perspective on how to learn on my own. I would highly recommend David Foster to anyone who wants improve themselves academically.

Tim was a great teacher for me! He was easy to talk to,understood my questions, and helped me improve my weak points. After working with him for a few months, I was able to understand a lot of the material provided in the SAT test and improve a lot on my practice test. Overall, Tim is a great teacher for learning how to improve your English , especially to prepare for SAT test.

The tutor is excellent with my child. She keeps the attention of my child and they do fun assignments that the tutor has created in order to keep my child engaged in reading and in wanting to read more and on her own. The tutor will also speak to the teacher and attend school meetings so that they can have a better understanding on what is being taught at school. They also want to get the feedback from the teacher so that they can better assist the student. I have already referred my child's tutor to 2 people at her school. I would highly recommend for anyone to use their tutoring services.

I have really enjoyed having Troy tutor my 2 kids. My 16 yr old son needed a positive role model to help motivate him and keep him accountable and Troy was able to connect and make that happen. My 11 yr old daughter needed her foundation skills enhanced and Troy was able to jump right in and make her feel comfortable. From Day 1 I saw a huge improvement in just their basic understanding of math and was highly impressed. Definitely someone to hire!

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good math tutor?

Math home tutors are available for any age student, from elementary school to postgraduate studies. Rates will vary based on the tutor’s background, education and experience. To find a good math tutor, first determine your learning goals. Do you need help understanding and completing homework assignments? Are you preparing for the math portion of a standardized test? Next, read reviews from current and former students. Find someone with proven success helping students achieve their goals. If you want help on an ongoing basis, decide what your budget is and identify the tutors who fall within your range. Ask if there are additional fees for travel, as some home math tutors include travel costs in their rates and others charge extra. Ask about session length and the tutor’s teaching style, and whether they also offer online sessions or group sessions. Finally, schedule a single session with each of the math tutors you think are best to see who is the best fit.

How much do math tutors cost?

Math is a subject that’s challenging for many students. Fortunately, home math tutors can help students excel in math by working with them in focused one-on-one tutoring sessions. The cost for math tutors varies based on the type of math, the expertise and experience of the tutor, and geographic location. Pricing may range between $40 and $100 per hour, depending on the math subject. As a rule, the more complex the subject matter, the more the math tutor will charge for the lessons. The cost reflects the math tutor’s advanced studies and the work required for them to be able to teach on the subject. Frequency can also affect costs. How much does home tutoring cost?

Investing in home tutoring is an investment in your child’s future. Home tutors work one on one with your child to address their challenge areas and provide room for intellectual growth that may not happen in a busy classroom. The cost of home tutors depends on multiple factors including where you live, the tutor’s background and education, the subject matter, and how often the tutor comes. Test prep home tutoring is typically more expensive than single-subject tutoring. Here are some examples of average tutoring costs:
