Pete has been helping us with our very energetic and curious black lab for about the past ten months. He has come to our house for trainings and we have been able to join him and our pup on training walks. Pete helps train our pup and also takes him on dog walks 3x a week. Pete's walks are no ordinary walk in the park! Our pup could be on an outing up in the trails or could have spent the afternoon swimming!! Our pup loves Pete and is always excited to head off on an adventure with him. We have also been able to board our pup with Pete which was a great experience as we knew our pup would be loved and cared for exceptionally well. We are fortunate to have found a skilled and caring dog trainer!

Joyce was very thorough and considerate. She has a good understanding of pet care and was very responsive while we were traveling. Our cat seemed happy when we returned, which isn't always the case when we've used other sitters in the past. Thanks Joyce!

She addressed every need that my cat had and also did it in a very personable way, keeping me updated about how things were going, which is very important to me to have peace of mind when out of town knowing that someone new is taking care of your pet. Thanks so much Tiffany!

We have been using the services of Pawsitively Purrfect Pet Care for about 14 years, that fact alone I think speaks highly of what they provide! I appreciate the peace of mind knowing that our beloved cats are well tended to as well as the security of our home in our absence. We request one visit daily during which time the cats are fed, sand box cleaned and there is also some playtime which gives companionship. I like the idea that someone lightly checks the interior of the house in case there should be any maintenance mishaps. Being a bonded professional business I have no problem having Elizabeth retain a key and that way is easily available when needed.

We've been using Fetch! of South Bay for a number of years now, after being referred to them by our vet. We have absolutely been thrilled with the love and care the staff provide to our pets -- and even though we have moved, the quality of care and particularly the attention to detail is really wonderful! They have even been excellent at several last-minute trips we've had to take. And now that one of our kitties needs insulin injections, its so great to have someone we trust who can come to our home and administer this so that "Molly" doesn't have to get stressed out by a trip to the vet! We highly recommend Fetch! Pet Care to anyone with pets!

Roddy was great. Super fast response, really proactive and took care of event details that we didn't even know needed to be taken care of. It was great watching my mom enjoy the party- vs running around taking care of the details. Would definitely recommend Roddy for your party or event.

Dog Tales is the best doggie day care in the Bay! Their services are great especially because they provide a one-on-one experience with your pet. I recently took a mini vacation and had no one to take care of my two dogs (Chocolate Lab & German Short-haired Pointer). They medium sized dogs and love to go on walks at the park and beach. Dog Tales offers overnight stays at incredible prices!! They also offer complimentary grooming (baths), so when I picked them up they smelled really good! :) The staff is very friendly and are available at all times in case you want to check how your pets are doing. I recommend Dog Tales to anyone looking for a warm and friendly environment where your dogs can be taken care of either for a few hours or a couple of days! :) Will for sure be using their services in the near future!

Christina took care of my cat, Fosse, while I was away for Thanksgiving. She first came to my house to meet Fosse and see exactly what feeding him entailed. I could immediately tell that she really likes and understands animals. While I was away, Christina not only fed him twice a day, she also brushed and played with him. He was one happy cat when I got home! I would highly recommend Christina and plan on using her again over Christmas.

Holly was great. She was very diligent about texting updates and photos while she took care of my pets in my home. My chihuahua was not happy that I was gone, but she had him out and walking and calm by the time I got back. I felt comfortable having her in my home and with my pets when I was out of state. Highly recommended!

Chelsea is an excellent person for animal care. She has a deep love for many different kinds of animals and it shows in her work. She has helped take care of my cats (one of which requires medication multiple times a day) and she was absolutely on top of it with their feeding/medication schedules. She is a very detail oriented person and it shows in her work. Her own pets are meticulously cared for, and she brings this kind of focus to all of her work with animals. She is a top notch petsitter with good judgement (especially important for my cat with health issues- should he need medical attention or some extra TLC) and a sincere love for animals. I would recommend her to anyone looking for help with their animals.

Lane is great. He is very caring and treats the dogs he walks with love and personal care. I appreciate that he very flexible to accommodate my changing dog care needs. He is also great at communicating with the dog owners on an ongoing basis so I know when my dog is being picked up, dropped off and what occurred during the walk.

Kaellyn has been fantastic with our pup Ziggy. When we first met her she went out of her way to ask what he was learning/training so she could continue to reinforce it, as well as reached out to our previous dogwalker to learn more about his behavior. She is easy to work with and always reports back on his behavior, anything out of norm and how he did with the group walks. She even leaves us little notes when she drops him off at home! I like that he gets time with different dogs and she varies his walks. We can tell she really cares for Ziggy and thoroughly enjoys her job - price is good and in-line with other walkers but I would strongly recommend her. I know Kaellyn also does house sitting and cat care!

Gina is absolutely the BEST!! She takes the best care of our pups while we are at work. She provides daily updates and loves on them as if they are her own! We couldn't be more happy to find a dog walker as great as Gina to hand out with our pups when we're away! She goes above and beyond too, brings in packages...cleans up accidents. I can't recommend her enough!

What a wonderful job Melissa did taking care of our pets and the house. Our cat and dog obviously had a wonderful time also. She took great care of our house and yard also and left our house in the same fashion as we left it. I would very much recommend her to anyone. Superb.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is included in a dog grooming?

Dog grooming is so much more than giving your dog a bath. Dog grooming is a broad term that covers all aspects of canine cleanliness and hygiene. The services included in dog grooming will vary based on your needs and what you choose to pay. Unless they are rolling in cowpies or playing in mud puddles, most dogs are okay getting a shampoo bath only as needed. You’ll know when they need it if they smell bad or are bringing dirt into the house. Some dogs, like shepherds and shih tzus, have thick coats that can get matted and tangled without regular care. Pro dog groomers can deftly blow dry a dog’s hair after a bath so that it is shiny and smooth. Dog grooming can include brushing that detangles dog hair and also thins the undercoat to minimize shedding.

Dog grooming also includes hygiene services such as toothbrushing and ear cleaning. Clean teeth are important to the health of your dog, and the pros have the patience and proper technique to get it done. Regular dog grooming can stave off tear stains, those reddish stains below your dog’s eyes. Anal gland expression is something not many people want to do on their own, even if they love their dog. A dog groomer can safely and efficiently release any blocked anal gland fluid. Other dog grooming services include nail trimming and clipping. Nationally, dog grooming prices range from $60 to $80. Most dog groomers offer discounts to customers who purchase monthly packages or bundle multiple grooming services at one time.

What does a dog walker do?

We all know our dogs love going on long, adventure-filled walks, but jobs and family and commuting can make it difficult to give them the leash time they deserve. You can hire a professional dog walker to make sure your furry friend gets adequate exercise and outdoor time each day. A professional dog walker may be an individual contractor or work for a dedicated dog-walking company. In either case, you want to make sure the pro has the appropriate insurance in case of an emergency. Some people opt to give the dog walker a key to their house; others to have them pick up the dog from the yard. Dog walking can happen as often as multiple times per day, or just a few times a month as needed. Here are some questions to ask when you are interviewing a new dog walker:

  • Will you or someone else be walking my dog?
  • Do you have a backup plan if you can’t make it for a scheduled walk?
  • Will you walk my dog by itself, or do you walk several dogs at once?
  • What are your different walk routes?
  • When will you pick up and drop off?
  • How will we communicate?
  • Do I have to commit to a schedule or are you flexible?
  • What’s your cancellation policy?
  • What’s your response plan if my dog gets injured or becomes sick?
  • How and how often do I pay you?
  • Do you offer package pricing if I buy multiple dog walks up front?

What is a dog groomer?

A dog groomer is a service professional who provides dog grooming and basic hygiene care for your dog. Dog groomers are typically animal lovers who are competent and comfortable working with a wide range of dog breeds and temperaments. Dog groomers are knowledgeable about the care needs for different kinds of dog coats. A poodle will have different haircut needs than a shih tzu, for example, so it pays to have a trained pro provide the proper cut. Good dog groomers know how to safely clean your dog’s teeth, bathe your dog, and cut their nails without going too short. They understand how to trim the hair from around your dog’s face, express anal glands, and clean your dog’s ears. Many people who choose dog grooming as a profession also pursue other dog services such as attending veterinary school, running a doggy day care center, working as a professional dog walker, and more.

What is a dog groomer?

Keep your family dogs happy, healthy and clean with regular dog grooming. A dog groomer is a business owner or employee of a dog grooming business who specializes in dog hygiene and grooming. To find a reputable dog groomer, research reviews, ask for references and confirm that the groomer has good standing in the dog grooming community.

A dog groomer should be comfortable and competent working with dogs of all breeds and temperaments. Typically a groomer will have trained with other groomers and taken educational courses to keep abreast of the latest safety information and techniques. There are brick-and-mortar dog grooming businesses, as well as mobile dog groomers who bring all their equipment and provide their services at your home or location. In some cases, brick-and-mortar businesses will also pick up and return your dog for an additional fee.

What vaccines do dogs need to be groomed?

It’s important to make sure your dog is up to date on its vaccines before taking it to a groomer. Vaccinations keep your dog and the other dogs that use the establishment healthy. Viruses can linger long after a dog is gone, so an unvaccinated dog can infect a number of other dogs days or even months after their visit. Find out about your dog groomer’s vaccination policies, and think carefully about receiving services from a company that does not require vaccinations. Here are the main vaccinations that are generally required for dog grooming:

  • Parvovirus: Parvo is a nasty virus that can kill dogs within 48-72 hours of infection. The virus is incredibly persistent and, according to the American Veterinary Medical Association, is resistant to heat, cold, humidity and drying. It’s spread by dog-to-dog contact or contact with contaminated feces, environments (food and water bowls, collars and leashes, etc.,) or people.
  • Adenovirus 2: Dogs receive this vaccination to protect against canine infectious hepatitis. The vaccination can also helps prevent canine cough.
  • Canine distemper virus: Distemper has no known cure and can cause serious pain, illness, and even death, although recovery is possible with medical intervention.
  • Rabies: This disease attacks the central nervous system and — when untreated — will
  • lead to death. The CDC recommends euthanizing an unvaccinated animal that has been exposed to rabies, although six-month isolation followed by vaccination is also permissible.
  • Para-influenza: Canine para-influenza leads to kennel cough and an unhappy dog.
