The work was excellent: all was done quickly and satisfactorily. We had a confusing issue with closing out the bill, however: we didn't discuss parking in our downtown office building beforehand - so we weren't upset - but there was some confusion about it afterwards; the three parties (us, the handyman, and the company) were all confused about how the handyman was billing the parking to us and how we might reverse the billing after we provided partial parking validation. Ultimately, it was all good.

Due to extremely high wind over the weekend, our wooden fence became wobbly and highly unstable. After minutes of placing a repair request, Jamie responded promptly and was able to come over and assess the damage within a short time later. In person, he's highly professional and courteous with a big genuine smile. The quote was affordable, reasonable and highly competitive. The work was successfully and professionally completed in just a few hours the following day. He also nicely cleaned up the work space and its close vicinity. Overall, we are greatly impressed with his high quality of work, his punctuality and dependability, his affordable pricing and his professionalism. We'll definitely keep Jamie as our go-to handyman for future repair and maintenance works.

Renato is the handyman I’ve been looking for for years! He’s reasonably priced, does very high quality work and is super friendly. He also gave me multiple options for the mounting of my TV and clearly explained the trade offs with each option. As a new home owner, hiring a handyman is intimidating but he made it easy. I will definitely be using him again!!

For the last few years, we've had 3-4 windows that did not open or close properly. Window companies and local stores only wanted to sell me new windows. Then along came Bruce. He came to our house, looked at the windows, and said "no problem." He ordered the necessary parts, and came back to the house within a few days to make the repairs. The windows now glide like brand new. Throughout this transaction, Bruce was great. He was very prompt, respectful of our home, and his price was very fair. In addition, he fixed an interior door that wasn't aligned properly. I will highly recommend Bruce to anyone that wants to discuss his service and performance.

Ray was great! I needed a bed put together and Ray was able to do it same day. He showed up early. We didn't have the instructions anymore but we showed Ray a couple pictures and he did it perfectly. Victor is a well experienced painter and handyman. I placed my job request and he replied with a very fair quote. I made appointment with him to come and looked at the job ,and gave a date and time needed to complete the drywall for my kitchen ceiling and painting family room. He completed the job on time as planned. He even helped out in some other little things that needs attention of handyman for free. Giovanni form Art Italia is THE BEST! Seriously, the best. If you are reading this because you are in search of a tile professional, HIRE HIM RIGHT AWAY. You will NOT find anyone better. We love him, and will always hire him for our tile work, for several reasons: 1.) He's always on time. Which, believe it or not, is very rare in the construction business. 2.) He's so friendly and wonderful to work with. We are happy our bathroom is finished, but we miss having him around! And our puppies do, too. That's another bonus - if you have pets, he will make them feel at ease :) 3.) His prices are extremely competitive. I met with 3 contractors and another tile installer, and Giovanni had the best price for the level of service. I could tell that some of the contractors didn't know what they were talking about, so it was a no-brainer to hire Giovanni because he is an expert with a very fair price. 4.) He's very collaborative and gives great advice. He helped us choose our grout colors, and even advised us on the tile size - we were going to go with 3x6 subway tile, but Giovanni suggested we upgrade to 4x12, because it is more modern. We were also going to go with a bullnose finish, but he advised that we go with a black metal trim. We are SO glad we listened to him because everything looks sharp. 5.) Lastly, and most importantly, **his work is impeccable**. Our bathroom looks beautiful, and everyone comments on how "perfect" the tile is. I had a handyman at the house (for electrical & plumbing) at the same time Giovanni was working, and he even commented on the tile: "Wow, that is the best tile job I've ever seen." If you need a full renovation, or small tile repair, do exactly what his shirts say ... KEEP CALM AND CALL GIOVANNI! You won't be disappointed.

His knowledge of carpentry is extensive, based on my experience of several other handymen. I will continue to work with him in the future.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good handyman?

Finding a good handyman can change your life. Within days, the endless list of insurmountable tasks that were either out of your skill range or impossible to fit into your busy schedule can be completed. If you know you want help but aren’t sure how to hire the right pro, ask these questions to find the right fit:

  • What is your work experience? If you are putting in a tile backsplash, you want someone experienced with the task, not someone who generally does painting and junk removal.
  • How much do you charge? Handymen often charge hourly rates that vary based on the complexity of the task they’re hired to do, as well as flat rates for standard jobs. Be clear about what they’ll charge before you hire them.
    • On that note, discuss payment details. It’s wise not to pay all the money up front, especially for larger projects. You may be able to pay a deposit for materials and pay the remainder upon project completion.
  • How long will the job take you to complete? If the handyman is as busy as you are and a fence repair is going to take months, you should probably find another qualified handyman for the job.

Read client reviews and follow up with references to make sure you’re choosing the right handyman for your projects. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

What does a handyman do?

A handyman is a skilled laborer who provides basic home repairs. Anyone can call themselves a handyman, although most who do so are skilled with repairs and home projects. Reading reviews is a good way to determine their fitness for your job. The tasks a handyman can perform include assembling furniture, painting interiors and exteriors, repairing fences, repairing broken doors or replacing trim, hanging lights, hooking up appliances, and much more. Handymen may have flat fees for certain services, or charge an hourly rate. Handyman rates are often lower than those of a contractor, as they don’t have the same specialization. Some states have no limit on the work a handyman can perform, while others do. For example, California’s Building and Professions Code section 7048 (small operations) permits handymen to provide work similar to that of a contractor (floor installation, painting, etc.) provided the total cost of labor and materials does not exceed $500. A handyman is a great resource for minor home repairs at a lower cost than a licensed contractor, but for more complex projects, it pays to hire a specialized contractor. Fore more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How much does a handyman charge?

The national average rate for handyman jobs is $90-$160. A handyman performs general maintenance and repairs for residential and commercial properties. A handyman may charge a flat fee for standard services that take a predictable amount of time, such as installing a new appliance, as well as an hourly rate for larger projects such as digging out and replacing a rotted fence post. A cost-saving strategy when hiring a handyman is to bundle all the tasks you want them to do into one visit to make the most of any minimum service fee. Hourly rates for a handyman can average $50-$100 per hour. Pricing will depend on skill and experience required for the job, as well as regional labor rates. Here are a few examples of average handyman flat rates.

  • Attic ladder replacement: $150.
  • Toilet replacement: $75.
  • Ceiling fan and light fixtures: $75.
  • Faucet replacement: $125.
  • Garbage disposal: $75.

Can a handyman do plumbing?

In some states, a handyman can provide plumbing services, but it may be in your best interest to call a plumber, particularly for issues more major than unclogging a drain or attaching a new sink. Hiring a plumber is important because mishandling your water and gas lines has the potential to do great damage to your home, your family’s health, or even the safety of your neighborhood. A handyman is not legally required to have any training or licensing in plumbing matters, while a licensed plumber has undergone years of education and on-the-job training. In some cases, homeowners insurance won’t cover damage caused by plumbing repair done by an unlicensed handyman.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, most plumbers learn their trade through a four- or five-year apprenticeship with 2,000 hours of paid on-the-job training. They also receive classroom education including “safety, local plumbing codes and regulations, and blueprint reading. They also study mathematics, applied physics, and chemistry. After completing an apprenticeship program, plumbers … are considered to be journey workers, qualifying them to perform duties on their own,” according to the DOL. Licensed plumbers should do continuing education to keep abreast of safety and technology changes. Poor plumbing can lead to sewage backups, a flooded home or even natural gas leaks, so it’s best to leave it in the hands of a specialized professional.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
