"Terence did a wonderful job working out the tight muscles I had in my back/shoulder. It's not a spa set-up, but that's not what I was expecting. I'm planning a return trip to work out the kinks after our long road trip."

"Lama Jigme Tenzin has a powerful gift of Tibetan Buddhist healing energy that he is able to transmit during treatments. The effects of his spiritual massage reach levels way beyond traditional massage. Jigme's gift most certainly developed as a result of years living and training as a Buddhist monk and Lama. We are fortunate he came to the West and is offering this deeply beneficial, one-of-a-kind service. His treatments reach way beyond the physical body, and leave you feeling a deeper connection to the Spirit within. Highly recommended. Julie Lilly-Belote and William Belote"

"It was clear from the beginning that Amy is a true expert on body wellness. She took the time to talk with me about my objectives and provided some helpful feedback and suggestions above and beyond the great massage she gave. She uses multiple methods based on the individual. I had been having a headache for days prior to the massage and it's been gone since this massage. It's been so difficult to find a good therapeutic massage and I'm grateful to have found Amy."

"I had the pleasure of meeting Kaz at Westside Acupuncture where he became my regular massage therapist. Kaz is very in tune with the human body and its meridians of energy. He easily detects the points I need work on and he always uses a varying degree of pressure, depending on the trouble. I have never needed to tell him more or less pressure because he works instinctively. If he hits a very tender spot on my legs, hands or feet and I ask what organ he's working on, he always lets me know. Kaz works quietly and is very gentle as he moves from one part of the body to the next which allows for full relaxation during the sessions . It always takes me a few minutes to get off the table afterwards because I'm so relaxed. If you are looking for a massage therapist, I highly recommend Kaz Idehara."

"Lisa Spirito of Cloud 9 is the utmost professional in this business. I have been having massage of various types from her for about 15 years. She is ultimately friendly, accommodating & sensitive to the customer needs. Lisa is always ready to assess a customer's pain & structure to see where they need help beyond what the client tells her. Sometimes she can feel things & points them out & they are right on target! Lisa can give a variety of massage types: Swedish, Deep Tissue, Lymphatic, Sports Injury, & probably more depending on what you want & can change then to suit from visit to visit. Lisa has a wonderful method & she has been doing this for many years, & it shows in her rhythm & pressure & timing. I never want it to end when the time comes! Lisa is willing to travel & can do work massages too if you need visits there. She is licensed & has both table & chair for massage. If you have a group of overworked, stressed employees, what better way to increase productivity than scheduling a day of appointments at work & letting staff unwind their desk posture for 20 minutes? I highly recommend Lisa Spirito for any massage needs you may have, even post surgery or injury. It's my pleasure to refer her. Good luck & enjoy."

"Ms. Chong was able to provide an amazing massage unlike any i've ever experienced before. She was able to establish a calm, peaceful setting that helped clear my mind and helped me feel relaxed even before the massage began! I can tell she has some kind of therapeutic background the way that she listened to me de-stress and helped me go through some mindfulness exercises. Her massage was very professional and I could tell she has very skilled Thai techniques with just the right amount of force in the right pressure points in my neck and back. I immediately felt better after the massage and the way she listened and talked to me was almost as helpful as the massage was! Overall a great experience that I would recommend to anyone"

"All of the above apply to Maria! I have been a client now for a couple of years and can’t say enough positive things about my sessions with her. Maria is not only professional and well trained, but has an amazing intuitive gift on finding areas that need attention before I even have to tell her. I require deep tissue work, and she does it to the exact pressure needed. I always feel so much better after a session with Maria. My muscles are relaxed, most of the pain is gone, and my mood has improved as well. I can honestly say that I don’t know how I would keep going without her! I have a lot of medical issues, knee replacement, herniated discs, severe arthritis... and Maria has been able to work with all conditions to improve my quality of life. I would recommend her to anyone, of any age, whether they just need a relaxing Swedish massage, or the more intensive work I require. Maria is the best massage therapist I have had after experiencing quite a few in 65 years. If you are looking for a great massage session, please try Maria! Jeanine Michaels-Leftwich"

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is Thai massage?

Thai massage, also called Thai yoga massage, combines acupressure and assisted yoga postures. Thai massage is based on the flow of energy through the body and focuses on energy lines called “sen.” It doesn’t use oils or lotions and, instead of rubbing muscles, the massage therapist compresses, pulls, stretches and rocks the recipient’s body to promote the flow of energy through these sen. In this form of massage therapy, practitioners use their hands, knees, legs and feet to apply deep muscle compression and stretch the body. It’s often performed on a mat on the floor instead of on a massage table. Like most forms of massage, Thai massage is used to relieve stress, improve range of motion and enhance flexibility. Some people also use Thai massage to address a range of health issues, including:

  • Relieving tension headaches
  • Decreasing back pain
  • Reducing joint stiffness and pain
  • Stimulating circulation and lymphatic drainage
  • Boosting energy

Because a traditional Thai massage session covers all of the muscles in your body, it typically lasts 90 minutes to 120 minutes.

How much do you tip a massage therapist?

All forms of massage therapy, from Thai massage to Swedish massage to deep tissue massage, are similar to other spa or hospitality services. So it’s appropriate to tip a massage therapist the standard hospitality rate of 15 percent to 20 percent of the cost of the session. For example, the national average cost for a deep tissue massage is $70-$90, so expect to tip $12-$18. Of course, you can always tip more or less depending on your experience, especially if you’ve opted for extra services. For example, expect to tip more for a couple’s hot stone massage session that includes aromatherapy. Also, if you’re paying with a gift certificate or coupon, or purchasing a discounted multi-session package, make sure to calculate your tip based on the full price of the massage.
