WOW is the best word I can use to describe my experience with MGB movers. Mario and his crew were careful with all our furniture and powered through one of the hottest days of the year so far. I would not hesitate to recommend them for a move--big or small. We couldn't be more pleased.

Tony and his crew were outstanding. Tony was honest and fair, didn't try to upsell or add hidden charges, they showed up on time, and his team was very polite and efficient. Wrapped everything that need protecting, nothing was broken or damaged, no damage to the property. They thought about and asked about where things should be placed when they moved furniture in. Very professional, and exactly what you want in movers. Although I hope to not move again for a long time, these are the movers I'll call if I do.

Frank is the most professional, kind, courteous, polite, trusting, reliable and careful movers I've ever worked with. First, I must share with you that in the past 30 years, I've probably moved approximately 12 times using other companies. In each one of those moves, at least one appliance was damaged and something special was broken that couldn't be fixed or replaced. Frank is the first mover I've ever worked with who handled each and every item with very special care and DID NOT damage or break one item. In my book, that is one the most important things you want in a mover. I was also very impressed with how quick he was in responding to my request for a mover and his extremely fair pricing. He also followed up several times before the move to make sure he had every item required to make my move successful and smooth. He arrived at the exact time we arranged to start the move and worked non-stop until the move was complete. And, when the move was finished, he had me check each room to make sure I was completely satisfied and happy that every item was exactly where I needed it to be. And, one of the most impressive things Frank did that no other moving company has ever done, he made a follow-up call the day after the move to make sure I was happy with the move and if there was anything else I needed that was overlooked. Of course, I didn't need him any further as he did everything perfectly the day of the move. That is true professionalism! I only wish everyone I deal with in business was like Frank. My life would be happier and stress free. I recommend Frank to anyone who is looking for an outstanding moving company. Thank you, Frank, for such a great job. You are an amazing person and you did an amazing job!

Moving went smoothly and great! Both guys were friendly and efficient. The only hiccup was with the start time. The movers thought we were starting at 7am, but it was scheduled for 9am. I rushed to my old apartment since they were already there, and didn't want them to have to wait or reschedule. Maybe a confirmation call the night before versus the day of so there's no confusion?

The guys did a good job with some challenges including some particularly heavy furniture and a spiral staircase which would not allow a queen box spring! Everything was moved as efficiently as possible without any issues on the part of the movers.

The entire experience was flawless. The two movers that came to help were clean and very helpful. They made sure all the glass was wrapped and ensured that all furniture was strapped in truck. They moved us as though they were moving their own items. I would recommend them without thought. Thanks for the experience from the Admin person Garina to the two men that moved us. Moving is usually not a good experience but you all made it much better.

I hired Muscle Movers to move an upright piano. They had a competitive and reasonable price for a quick but difficult job. I noticed immediately how professional and courteous Christopher was over the phone and decided to hire them. The day of the move, they arrived 15 minutes early and completed the job quickly yet carefully. I would hire Muscle Movers again and will also recommend them to anyone that needs a great moving company.

He moved a large, heavy credenza. It was turned down by 3 charitable organizations that wasted my time by assuring me on the phone it would be removed, but each time their movers rejected it. Brett is careful, professional and pleasant.

His 2 Movers Kevin and Shea were very accomodating. They even took my plants (which they were not supposed to and boxed up my lamps. And Paul stood by his firm quote. Paul came to give us a quote and we felt he was very honest and up front with us. The truck was a little small but the movers did a fantastic job and fit everything in just when it looked like everything wouldn't fit!!!!!! The movers even had to took apart our dining room table and our desk cause it wouldn't fit through the doorway...I know why now they are called Top Notch Movers... Thanks Paul Great job!!!

I called around for movers to help me with a Sunday move. I decided to go with New Life Moving because they had affordable/fair pricing and easy booking. I also liked how they didn't have hidden fees and charge a ton of extras. They do have a 3 hour minimum but I think that's pretty standard if you call around. It ended up taking around 4 hours and 15 minutes for the entire job. When it came to moving day, the movers had called me when they were on their way to the house. We had the pleasure to work with Abel and Eugene. Both guys were professional and hard-working. I have a thing for efficiency and they were working at a nice pace and were extra careful with our furniture/personal items. They wrapped up the furniture to make sure they wouldn't get scuffed/damaged and also had some boxes for us to use for our clothes. The truck that they came with was very large and we probably didn't even fill half of it. They packed up our smaller boxed items into a larger box they had as well. We had an extra stop for a pickup before our final drop-off and they were very helpful during it since it was a bit more difficult with the maneuvering and messy space. Abel and Eugene had good attitudes the whole time and didn't take any breaks. They were kind and very easy to work with. We definitely would use them again in the future. Fair pricing, efficient, professional and easy!

We had a phenomenal experience. The movers were on time and wonderfully efficient. The move took less than 4 hours altogether (new house was less than a mile away), and the team was productive and friendly throughout (despite awful heat and a lot of stairs). Nothing was damaged or missing. I can't recommend Ben-Hur highly enough.

Honestly I would recommend these guys over and over again. I called them with a 24 hour notice of moving a 1bdr and they were the only moving company to be able to accommodate my needs. I had Edward and Sergei as my movers and these guys were professional, friendly and hard working and made this whole stressful situation into a more relaxing experience. They handled my belongings with great care and took the time to make sure I understood all that was being done.

Appointment arrival time was between 7-9am. Four packers arrived at 7:45am and quickly realized that I am a packrat and hadn't pre-packed anything, and therefore needed a full pack, so the lead guy quickly called and asked their home base to send more help. He assured me that they would try their best to get it all done today, and they started right away. I don't remember all their names, but I do remember Micah, because he and the lead guy had to carry the heaviest stuff. The fifth guy arrived at around 1pm, and between the five of them, they packed up ALL of our stuff. And it was A LOT OF STUFF - big, heavy furniture and small stuff strewn all over. For them to pack up a 3-bedroom/3 bath (extremely cluttered) home in 9 hours was a bit of a miracle. They even carefully wrapped and boxed everything, took pictures of all the stuff they packed and now I can see pictures of all my "inventory." To top it off, the movers were super polite, nice, careful and efficient.

We’ve moved a lot and have never used movers ... mainly because we have six sons and I have Scottish (frugal) husband. But with this move I decided to look into movers. I use thumbtack for the first time and was connected with DOWNTOWN MOVERS. They responded immediately, offered a competitive rate, and worked with me on scheduling. JOE and ADAM arrived and were absolutely amazing! I can’t say enough positive things about these two. I will never move without them again! I highly recommend this company for anyone doing any kind of move.

Hired Kerb for a two item pick up from storage unit to house. One of the items was very heavy and of course needed to go upstairs. The two movers took the time to re-evaluate their methods to ensure no damage to my items or the final location, and didn't charge me for the extra prep. Very friendly and communicative. Good work.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do moving companies do?

Moving companies provide a range of services to help you physically move out of one residence and move into a new place. But moving companies can do so much more than just haul your belongings across town in a truck. The national average for moving company prices ($250-$350 per hour) reflects the range of services provided. Here are examples of all the ways moving companies can help:

  • Packing: Moving companies can pack your belongings for you. They typically charge a flat rate for both the box and the labor to pack the box. The more time-consuming the belongings are to pack, the higher the cost per box. For example, books could be $5 per box, linens $10 per box, and fine china and glassware $18 per box.
  • Specialty moving: Safely move a baby grand piano, a oversize aquarium, or other specialty items with the help of pro movers.
  • Storage: Many moving companies can store your belongings while you wait for a new home to be remodeled or closing of your new home to be finalized. If you’re moving long-distance, they often provide short-term storage free for a specific length of time, and a set rate after that (such as $60 per square cubic foot of storage space used).
  • Long-distance moves: No need to rent a trailer and move your things; a long-distance moving company can haul your belongings across the country for you. Typically they charge by the cubic foot for moves, with prices based on your destination.
  • Unpacking: Moving companies can even unpack your belongings for you after they have moved them. This is not as common, and will definitely increase the price, but can be helpful if you’re not able to tackle this task yourself.

How much does a moving company charge per hour?

When you’re ready to make a major move, it’s time to research moving companies’ prices. A moving company may charge on average anywhere between $25 and $100 per hour, per worker, for moving services. The price will vary with regional labor rates, local cost to do business, and the level of service the movers are providing. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a moving company is $250-$350 per hour. This price includes a range of pricing, from all-in service with four or more movers on site to standard hourly rates for one or two movers. Other factors that affect moving companies’ prices are packing, stairs (or elevators), and distance. For a full-service move, you pay movers to pack your belongings for you. You may pay for the cost of the moving boxes and an hourly rate per worker, and there may be additional charges for packing fragile items. Stairs will also add to your moving prices. Lifting and carrying boxes and furniture up and down stairs takes more time and creates more physical labor for the workers. Moving companies may charge flat rates for flights of stairs, such as $50-$70 per flight. A moving company may also charge a one-time fee for moving things via elevator, such as $75-$100. If parking is not accessible in front of your home or apartment building, there may also be an additional fee for the added distance to carry your belongings to the truck.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

How much does it cost to move a one-bedroom apartment across the country?

Professional movers can handle the hard work of moving your one-bedroom apartment across the country for you. You can determine what your move will cost by learning the rate your movers charge per cubic foot and how they factor distance into the total cost. Cross-country movers typically charge based on your belongings rather than apartment size because that determines how much work they will have to do. For example, a studio apartment that is crammed full of things will take more work and moving truck space than the contents of a three-bedroom apartment with very little furniture.

Cross-country movers may also have varying rates, depending on where in the country you are moving. For example, a company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. A one-bedroom apartment costs approximately $1,500 to move across the country.

How much does it cost to move across the country?

The national average cost for hiring cross-country movers is $1,490-$2,220. A number of factors can affect the cost. One factor is the distance you want to move. For example, an East Coast-based moving company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. Another factor is how many belongings you have. Most cross-country movers charge by the cubic foot.

The type of move you want is another consideration in cost. You can have your belongings moved exclusively and delivered on a set day, or you can opt for a consolidated move, which is less expensive. In a consolidated move your belongings are stored and transported with the goods of other customers who are moving to your general vicinity during the same general time frame as you. Your belongings should arrive within a one- to two-week window, rather than on a set day. If you want the cross-country movers to pack your belongings for you, the cost will also increase.
