Eli arrived within the two hour window and I used the "Housecall" app to check exactly where the technician was. He was courteous, friendly, and professional. He did the work, using a tarp so as not to dirty my carpet, which I appreciated. The quality of the work was top notch. I would definitely use this company again and would not hesitate to recommend Eli specifically.

Jovani did a good job replacing a cracked glass on a large window. He showed on time, removed the glass, returned within 2-3 hours with a fully assembled window. He glued back multiple plastic dividers for a small windows impression. I would use his services again.

Larry did an excellent job in hanging curtain rods and blinds in my home for 11 windows. He was quick, efficient, and very professional. He was the first one to respond to my request, and was also the most reasonable. I marveled at the high quality of his workmanship. It was simply outstanding. He was on time for the job. Other workman have had me waiting for several hours or days before they showed up. I was quite surprised when he showed up exactly on time. I recommend him highly for any type of job. I will be calling on him for several projects that we need to do in the future. Handy Werk is the best!!!!!!!!!

I hired Jamie to put new frames on 12 windows in my home. He came out and measured everything, and discussed the various options we had for the project, as it was a little bit complicated. He gave me a great bid, that came in lower than others but still accounted for any overages that could occur. Jamie completed the project in two days (we had assumed it might take three), stayed within our budget, and was professional and courteous the entire time. Always cleaned up after himself, when this was a messy job! Will definitely turn to him in the future if I have any more carpentry projects, thanks Jamie!

Hector is a gentleman. I needed someone to upgrade my elderly parents' faucet with one that I had already purchased, and I was only going to be in town for a day. Hector was able to meet me at my parents' home during my very small availability window. Unfortunately, upon arrival, we discovered that we were missing a part necessary for the replacement. Hector then accompanied us to Lowes in hopes of getting the part locally and when that was not successful, offered to come back after I had ordered the part online and replace it then. I had originally preferred to get the faucet replaced during my visit, because I would feel more comfortable overseeing the project without my parents' needing to involve themselves or their time. However, Hector was so kind and gracious despite the missing part during our first visit that I knew the replacement would go seamlessly even without my presence later, and that is exactly what happened. I will be using Hector again very soon for more projects around my parents' home, especially knowing that I can arrange for work to be done without me having to physically be there. Thank you Hector!

For the last few years, we've had 3-4 windows that did not open or close properly. Window companies and local stores only wanted to sell me new windows. Then along came Bruce. He came to our house, looked at the windows, and said "no problem." He ordered the necessary parts, and came back to the house within a few days to make the repairs. The windows now glide like brand new. Throughout this transaction, Bruce was great. He was very prompt, respectful of our home, and his price was very fair. In addition, he fixed an interior door that wasn't aligned properly. I will highly recommend Bruce to anyone that wants to discuss his service and performance.

I choose CoastLife Construction from 4 other bids to my project. The competitive bids included well established companies such as Home Depot and Lowes. CoastLife was very competitive in their bid for similar selection of windows and installation and provided the confidence typically related to the big named companies. From the bidding process, through to contract signing and installation, CoastLife was professional, responsive and executed exactly per their commitments. My neighbors who had previously replaced their windows by other vendors were impressed with the product, installation and cost as compared to their installation. CoastLife provided good honest VALUE. I would highly recommend this company to others who are in the market for window replacement and installation.

I contacted Pro-Model for an initial deep cleaning to a restaurant I just leased. Alma, the owner of Pro-Model, and her crew were excellent and delivered exactly (and then some) what was promised. From floors to windows to stainless steel, everything sparkled. Every corner was attended to, even walls and moldings were cleaned. The cleaning was deep and thorough--far more comprehensive than I was expecting. I will use Pro-Model again and recommend them highly.

Surepro did a fantastic job replacing my windows and repairing the stucco/repainting my home. There teams worked so fast (the windows were replaced in a day!). Everyone took pride in their work and even did a few extra things when asked. They always arrived on time, worked throughout the day and kept the jobsite clean. No corners were cut, no time was wasted. If you're thinking of repainting or putting in new windows, Surepro needs to be on the top of your list!!

Maria did a complete rewiring on our home, including the addition of lighting, wiring for new HVAC unit, installed flooring, painting (interior and exterior), walled up a window, and many small miscellaneous jobs. She was VERY easy to work with, accommodating, and professional. She does beautiful work at a reasonable price. She was very responsible and reliable, to the point that she became my de facto general contractor. Hire her. You won't be disappointed. We have plans for using her on some other projects soon!

We had just bought a new house and wanted to renovate a bedroom and bathroom that had not been permitted by the previous owner. We hired Ronald Butler and his crew because out of all the contractors we interviewed, he seemed the most knowledgeable and apt to delivering the services we were looking for. From the outset of the renovation, it was clear that our new home was going to need much more work than we anticipated. The discoveries we made when opening up walls, prompted us to change our scope of work. We were now facing new electrical, plumbing, foundation, roofing, and flooring among other things. My wife and I were nervous about the changes because of the financial ramifications, and with two small children, the impact it will have on our living conditions for the next several months. Fortunately for us, we found the right contractor. Ronald's no nonsense advice, professional guidance and expert workmanship has made this process a lot more manageable than we thought. The project included in addition to the aforementioned scope: new floor plan, new HVAC, new tankless water heater, high efficiency appliances for a new kitchen, solar tubes, new electrical sub-panels, two new bathrooms, with new tub, all new fixtures, toilets and sinks, new laundry room, energy efficient recessed lighting throughout the house, new copper piping, gas piping, new electrical conductors, recepticles and switches, new windows, interior and exterior doors, new drywall and paint, new insulation, and a new 400 square foot deck. There were many challenges throughout this project, and Ronald and his crew met and overcame each one in a timely fashion, with courtesy and professional tact. My wife and I feel very fortunate to have found Ronald. He has not only delivered us a completely renovated home, that meets all of our contemporary criteria with all the new energy efficient home options, but he has also given us peace of mind and security for us and our children in an ideal home for many years to come. ....photos coming soon.

We had 30 year old single pane windows in 112 degree heat. It just wasn't conducive for the area we live in. We hired Atlas to do our windows. From the time we did measurements to install was 2 weeks with an install time of 1 day. They were the lowest yet best quality we found and got bids for. After the windows being installed and out AC on for an hour the house was already cooler than what it would have been with our old windows!!!

I had my entire house retrofitted with Anlin BayView windows and a sliding patio door. The owner, Paul did the measurement and estimate and was great at coordinating the installation. The install team was on top of things - they were on time every day and really respectful. Everyone knew we were on a tight schedule because I was planning to rent the house and they got the job done surprisingly fast. They kept the site clean and cleaned up after. I am very happy with the end result and would happily recommend these guys.

I had the Window Source replace my sliding glass door. It was really nice dealing with the project managers of the company instead of some salesperson. Also loved that they had financing and warranties, came out really well

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you replace a window?

You may want to replace a window if the glass has been damaged, you’re remodeling a room, or you want to upgrade your energy efficiency as well as your style by getting rid of those drafty single panes that are losing you money. When replacing a window, you can remove and replace the entire window down to the house frame. This method is best if the existing frame is damaged or deteriorating, but requires construction skills and know-how and will take more time and money. An easier and less expensive option is to install an insert replacement window into the existing frame. Insert replacements are only an option if your window frame is in good condition without rot or damage.

When replacing an entire window, first you’ll carefully remove the existing window with a pry bar and other tools. Next, you’ll make any repairs and adjustments needed to the existing frame or header and studs to ensure that the space is perfectly plumb and square, so the new window will sit perfectly within the space. Next, install the new window from the exterior, securing it into place. You’ll need to precisely wrap and insulate the window to ensure it doesn’t leak. Then, install the interior casing and exterior trim (as needed). If you prefer to hire a professional to install a window, consider replacing more than one window at a time, as the pro can work more efficiently.

How much would it cost to put in new windows?

The cost to replace a window can vary depending on factors such as window size, type of glass, brand of window, necessary trim repair, and any construction work required for installation. Labor rates and cost to do business in your region will also affect the cost. The national average window installation cost is $2,650 per project. Here are some examples of average trim repair and window replacement costs:

  • Trim repair:
    • Line and case a window frame with an MDF product: $400.
    • Line and case a window frame with raw hemlock wood: $500.
  • Approximate cost to install five windows at one time: $3,000.
  • Approximate cost to install one double-hung, energy-efficient 3-foot by 4-foot window: $500-$550.
    • For the same window size (3-foot by 4-foot) from a different manufacturer made with a specialty fiberglass exterior and all-wood interior, the cost could go up to $1,500.
    • Pricing can go as high as $5,000 for a bay or bow window with specialty glass and framing.
      • These examples include removal and disposal of old materials and window.

How much is a custom window?

Choosing custom windows will increase your window installation cost but will provide you with exactly what you want. The average national cost for window installation is $2,650. Your custom window costs will vary based on several factors. The first factor is the type of frame you want. The four most common types of frames are vinyl, fiberglass, aluminum and wood. Wood is typically the most expensive option, followed by aluminum. The type of glass you select will also affect cost. There are single-, double- and triple-pane windows. Most double- and triple-pane windows have gas sealed between the panes that act as insulation. Windows typically cost more the more energy-efficient they are, though this efficiency can save you money on utility bills in the long run. The type of glass used can also affect cost. There are different grades of glass — high-performance glass, low-e coated glass, and more — which all provide you with better insulation. In addition, the number of unified inches (window height x window width) you need will affect cost. The cost of custom windows will also be affected by installation cost and whether any repair or construction work is required to properly fit the new window.
