I hired Ahmed for Math tutoring for my son who is taking the PSAT and SAT this coming fall. He had rave reviews about Ahmed. Ahmed was patient, incredibly knowledgeable, and able to explain the concepts to my son in an absorbable manner. I will continue using him for the rest of my son's high school math needs. Highly recommended.

All of their staff is very responsive and amazing. I scheduled my sessions right away with great tutors who graduated from top universities. Also, it was so helpful to download their SAT UP app. After trying dozens of SAT prep apps, this one is my favorite so far. If you want to get higher points, this package is awesome and affordable for the value you get.

Anish is an excellent GRE tutor. He offered to tutor me one-on-one in order to accommodate for my busy school schedule. He is very good at explaining challenging reading comprehension questions in simple yet clear ways and always stop to make sure I understand everything. Also, he asks what I would like to focus on before each session to make sure he covers all aspects that I want to improve upon. I would highly recommend him to anyone who needs help with GRE.

Bryce is a wizard when it comes to test prep. I hired him to help me improve my LSAT score and I was shocked at how quickly I was able to progress under his guidance. I’ve always been that guy who thinks “I’ve never been good at standardized tests, no matter what kind of help I get”. Working with Bryce turned that notion upside down. He showed me that the LSAT isn’t a labyrinth of mystery, but rather a puzzle that can be unlocked with the right tools. He was entirely right. Bryce utilizes a very easy-to-understand approach, breaking down each section and each question type into something concrete and understandable. His methods not only work when applied to the test, but he strives to make sure you understand them. Since the LSAT has patterns and attempts to use the same methods to trick you, many of my conversations with Bryce involved making sense of a certain style of question, understanding it commonsensically, and then realizing that it wasn’t all that difficult to arrive at the right answer once you removed the haziness of a foggy LSAT brain. We often used golf and other sports analogies to help make sense of the arguments. I found those analogies to be incredibly helpful because they put the LSAT into terms that I was already comfortable with. After working with Bryce, I improved my LSAT score by 8 points in a few months. But, besides a better LSAT score, I am really indebted to Bryce for helping me to think more clearly. Ultimately, Bryce’s method leads you to becoming supremely inconvincible, so that your brain will immediately spot flaws in arguments you see on TV, from your friends or family, or wherever else you find them. Now, I am naturally spotting holes in arguments and I am a much more inquisitive reader. These skills are phenomenal for the LSAT but will serve anyone well in law school too. I would highly recommend Bryce as an LSAT tutor!

Vedika is an unbelievably patient and dedicated tutor. She helped me improve my SAT score from the 1900s (first attempt) to 2310 (third attempt). She is great at explaining Mathematical concepts by breaking them down into parts and makes you practice strategically to ensure that you generate excellent results and manage time well. As for Writing, her approach is great and helps one see definite improvements right away. With respect to Critical Reading, again, very strategic approach. She sits down and goes over questions/ doubts/ wrong answers, figures your mistake and helps you work on it. Overall, I highly recommend her. She was probably the best tutor I have ever had.

Brian is a fantastic tutor! I really can't say enough good things about him. He is always well-prepared, thoughtful, and he really knows his stuff. He helped my daughter on the SAT so much. He really transformed the way she thought about and approached the test. He is an all around excellent tutor. He was never stumped by questions my daughter had. What impressed me the most about Brian is how knowledgeable he was on even the smallest grammar detail. I would highly recommend Brian to anyone looking to improve their SAT or ACT scores!

Jennifer is an excellent tutor. The results she gets are absolutely impressive and I believe it's because she understands that different kids sometimes need a different approach when working on problem solving and test taking. She knows how to get through to students. She's also extremely professional and wasn't late once! Do not hesitate working with her - she's remarkable!

    About

Having been fascinated with the inner workings of programs from a young age, I take joy in constructing my own within several platforms. I would be more than happy to teach those with the same passion for computer science. Languages I have worked on include Java, C++, Ruby and HTML. In regard to teaching these subjects, I have experience in the past teaching elementary school kids how to program their own robots. Your school assignments will seem just as easy to you in no time! I can also offer tutoring for Japanese, having been raised in a Japanese household and attended the San Francisco Japanese Language Class for over 10 years. I was also a teacher aide for AP Japanese at my local high school, so I know firsthand what challenges students' face when learning this particular language. With these experiences, I can teach Japanese like no other tutor can. I look forward to further correspondence!

I am currently an undergraduate student at UC Berkeley. I specialize in the following subjects: -SAT Verbal -SAT Math -Calculus **I scored in the 99th percentile on the PSAT and SAT, and received A's in math throughout high school and college.

    About

I am based in Cupertino, California, and I specialize in the following: English, Math, Biology and SAT.

    About

I currently attend UC Davis and am employed as a tutor at a top tutoring company that only hires individuals with exceptional tutoring skills, a top SAT score, and a high GPA. I have spent over 500 hours tutoring and received additional tutor training while working at a nonprofit for literacy for 4 years. In addition, I am a founding member of a nonprofit organization that provides tutoring to underprivileged children in various subjects. I provide experienced, individualized tutoring to individuals that need help in language arts, essay writing, and grammatical skills as well as scoring high on their SAT reading and writing, AP English, and AP literature tests that is time efficient. I can also work separately or together as a college adviser in order to perfect your child's undergraduate application to any of the universities or colleges, guide them in creating the most attractive application, and help them produce an unrivaled essay. As a current University of California, Davis student, I personally took the AP English, AP literature, and SAT exams recently (2 years ago), so I have an advantage in knowing exactly what the current tests ask of students as well as what strategies should be learned in order to achieve a score that is highly desirable and sought after by top universities. I know the right methods and tactics to get your child a better score; guaranteed. I also understand what most colleges are looking for in a student, and I can guide your child in writing brilliant essays to get noticed in the midst of tens of thousands of applicants. I have years of teaching experiences from my job as an editor at my high school's award-winning school newspaper, in addition to working at a nonprofit in San Jose and learning exactly how to teach English effectively. My education began in elementary school at the private school Challenger School, where I learned from the best grammar and literature teachers to build my foundation in English. Later on, I went on to attend Leland High School where I was a member of the number one speech and debate team in the nation and first medalist of various speech tournaments, President of the National Honor Society (organization that connects academically achieving students with volunteer opportunities in the community), volunteer of over 500+ hours from tutoring underprivileged children in low income areas, page editor for the award-winning school newspaper The Charger Account, and winner of numerous accolades for my involvement in the community including: Leland High School's Jefferson Award (given to one student once a year for exemplary work in the community) and Senior Recognition Award for Academic Work and Involvement in the Community. My SAT scores in critical reading and writing rank in the 96th percentile in the nation, and I graduated in 2013 in order to attend University of California, Davis as a managerial economics major. I work as a part time tutor to make extra money for college and help fund a non-profit for which I used my expertise in writing to create a business plan for, and I started the organization to help underprivileged children that go to schools with poor reading comprehension in order to provide them with free tutoring in writing and reading. My style of teaching involves importance placed on the basics of grammar, writing, and effective test taking; I believe that once a student has this foundation down, any question on the SAT or AP exams is completely approachable and easy to solve. In juxtaposition with my own personal test-taking strategies, I also implement the same strategies taught at many of the top SAT prep centers to ensure that your child is getting thorough tutoring sessions. For students that need help in English or writing, I lay down the basics for your child, show ways of developing creativity, and teach them how to write effectively and well. I work with your child's talents and provide a very personalized experience that changes dynamically in order to achieve your child's highest potential and give the best tutoring possible.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you study for the SAT?

Your SAT prep strategy can mean the difference between a great score and a mediocre score, as well as the difference between being accepted to or rejected by your school of choice. The Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT) is a college entrance exam that measures a student’s knowledge and understanding of what they have learned up to this point in school and what they need to succeed in college. In addition to arming students with the knowledge they need to excel in the math, reading and writing components of the test, SAT prep can help improve scores by teaching students crucial strategies for taking the test itself. Professional SAT prep tutors can work with students one-on-one or in group sessions. Typically, tutors recommend that students who are comfortable and caught up with their regular schooling begin SAT prep at least three months before the test. If you’re targeting an elite school, six months before the test is a good time to begin. Students who are behind in school are advised to start early to ensure they’re caught up and feeling confident in all the relevant subjects. Suggestions for long-term SAT prep include taking challenging high school courses, completing all homework assignments, preparing for class tests and quizzes, and participating in class by asking and answering questions. There are free SAT prep training tools online; for those who’d like a one-on-one tutor to take them to the next level, the national average rate is $70 per hour.

When should you start preparing for the SAT?

It’s never too early to start preparing for college entrance exams, but professional tutors recommend a baseline of at least three months before the test. The Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT) is the gold standard for college admissions, and SAT prep is important for doing well. Your child’s SAT scores will have a major effect on which colleges send acceptance letters. Professional tutors can work with your kids to coach them on how to take the SAT, as well as studying the actual academic content. Doing well on the SAT is as much about knowing the right test-taking strategies as about having a firm grasp of the subject matter.

To understand your student’s readiness for the SAT, they can take the pre-SAT (PSAT) starting in their sophomore year. SAT prep can be structured around the student’s PSAT scores, so tutors can address any challenges and weak subject areas. If your child has their sights set on an Ivy League or elite school, SAT prep with a tutor or study program should start at least six months before the test. Vocabulary is a key element of the student’s SAT preparation and success. The national average rate for SAT prep tutoring is $70 per hour.

What is in the SAT test?

As your child is preparing for the SAT, it’s helpful to know the specifics of the test. The Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT) is made up of three main categories and one optional essay. Students have a total of three hours to take the test, with an additional 50 minutes for the optional essay. In total, there are 154 questions. During SAT prep, it’s helpful to take timed practice exams to understand how you’ll do during the actual test. Here is a brief overview of each of the four categories:

    • Reading: 65 minutes with 52 questions. The Reading test measures command of evidence, words in context, analysis in history and social studies, and analysis in science.
    • Writing and Language: 35 minutes with 44 questions. The Writing and Language test covers the same topics as Reading, as well as expression of ideas and standard English conventions.
    • Math: 80 minutes with 58 questions. The Math test looks at the student’s understanding of algebra, problem-solving and data analysis, and advanced math in the context of fluency, conceptual understanding, and applications.
    • Essay (optional): 50 minutes with 1 essay. The essay will demonstrate the student’s competency with writing, analysis and reading.
