Introduction: I am a professional composer, cellist, and educator providing lessons in cello, composition, music theory, beginning violin, beginning piano, and English as a second language (please scroll down for more information on ESL lessons). I have been teaching since 2002. I am a member of the Music Teachers Association of California and as such my cello and composition students are eligible to pursue the certificate of merit. I teach in Tustin near Prospect and 17th St. Please check out my profile below and let me know if you have any questions. Call or email me anytime! INSTRUMENTAL LESSONS - Cello, beginning violin, viola, and piano. I have an MFA in composition from California Institute of the Arts, and a BM summa cum laude in composition from California State University, Los Angeles. In my instrumental lessons, I focus on good technique while learning fun and interesting pieces. I have a strong foundation in classical music plus extensive experience in many other styles, including Hindustani music, Chinese music, West African music, Indonesian gamelan music, Native American music, fiddling and folk music, pop/rock, jazz and blues, and improvisation. I draw on techniques from various genres to create a well-rounded musician. Students also learn basic music theory and ear training. COMPOSITION AND MUSIC THEORY LESSONS I have an MFA in composition from California Institute of the Arts, and a BM summa cum laude in composition from California State University, Los Angeles. I have studied with composers Anne LeBaron, Wolfgang von Schweinitz, and Dr. John Kennedy. While my main compositional interests are classical, microtonal, avant-garde, opera, electro-acoustic, performance art, music for dance, and world music, I have also studied jazz and blues, commercial/popular music and film scoring. I am a versatile composer capable of writing and teaching in many styles. I also work with my students on music theory and ear training, orchestration, instrumentation, and form. I am currently the Artistic Director of the Los Angeles Composers Collective, a 501(c )3 non-profit organization (lacomposerscollective dot org). ENGLISH LESSONS As a teacher of English, I have taught privately, in public schools, and at Berlitz Languages, working with students from all over the world. At Berlitz, I worked mainly with business people and their families to improve their professional and conversational English. I also worked at ELS to prepare college students to attain the level of English necessary to attend American universities. I have a BA in Translation and Interpretation Studies and Spanish, and a Certificate in Latin American Studies. While I teach using full immersion methods, I do speak Spanish and Italian as second languages. I currently teach privately, helping students improve their grammar, reading, writing, conversational English, and accent elimination (a particular specialty of mine), from beginner through advanced levels, adults and children alike. We will tailor the lesson to suit your needs!

My experience with Linda was very positive. Linda is a very patient, knowledgeable, and mild mannered teacher. She is clear and concise with direction and explains things so that my sons understood what they were doing right, what they needed to improvement on, and what the expectations were. Linda was punctual and ready at my sons lesson start times and had each of their sessions well planned out. She is dedicated to them learning piano and seeing them progress. I would not hesitate to refer her service to anyone who wants their child to learn music.

Linda has a lot of experiences in tutoring. Every time I have questions in grammar or pronunciation during lessons, she clarify for me. I am very satisfied with that and I think it's the fastest way to learn. I would recommend her to my friends who want to improve their English.

The slow progression at school was the reason why I decided to put may daughter up with a private teacher, whom Linda seems to be the right fit. My daughter was never corrected for her fingering while playing the cello at school, until Linda did so. It took my daughter 6 months just to play 1 piece of music at school, let alone reading the music sheet for the cello comfortably. And she was the only cello student at school too! Linda is not only very knowledgeable musically, but also very talented as she plays many different instruments. Overall, very productive 1st class with Linda.

Details: No experience • Yes, the student can read music • 9 years old • Classical • Once a week • 60 minutes • Monday • Thursday • Late afternoon (3 - 6pm) • On an ongoing basis • As soon as possible • Ready to hire the right teacher now • I travel to the cello teacher • The cello teacher travels to me

Linda has been my son's private cello teacher for many years. With her help he jumped straight into the advanced chamber orchestra at high school as a freshman. We recently added music theory to his regular weekly lessons and as a result his grade for his AP music theory class at the high school is a 99.5%. Here's hoping for a 5 on his AP test!

FAQs

  • What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

In addition to a BM and an MFA in Music composition, I am continually conducting independent research into my various areas of interest in music as a means to further develop my artistry as a composer and performer. Although I am a teacher, I also view myself as a lifelong student! I believe there is always more to learn about music, and I strive to continue to expand my knowledge and skill. I also regularly seek coaching and training on the various instruments I play in an effort to ever improve my performance, and to pass along what I learn to my own students!
