One of the young videographers from the studio filmed our event and did an excellent job. She was polite, professional and unobtrusive. She brought a sound system with her which we used to give short presentations to the guest of honor. I was very pleased with how adept she was. Now we await the editing of the footage, which is being done in the studio, to produce a DVD of the event. I have high hopes and every reason to believe it will be top notch. They are responsive, clear, accurate and business like in all their communications. I will post another review when we have the finished product. Jennifer from Pleasant Hill

We hired Sybex Studio for our wedding couple months ago and now hired them again for Thanksgiving party. We were really impressed with their service and reasonable price. We spoke to different vendors and Ruben and his team were very friendly, helpful and knowledgeable about their job. We recommend Sybex Studio to anyone looking for event photography.

I hired Jeff to photographed our 50th wedding anniversary celebration of 63 people. He discussed the event several times in advance. He arrived 30 minutes before the posed fmaily pictures were takes to set identify scenic background at winery in Napa and set up proper lighting for the scene which was heavely backlit. He took posed pictures of 11 family members in various groupings, informal pictures at reception and during dinner and at Renewal of Weddding Vow ceremony. Picture were very good- sharp and good lighting. He composed 3 different albums for members of the family and was very quick in re-arranging the order of the pictures and making requested edit. . He was very professional to work with and guests enjoyed having him take their picture. He was very prompt ( within 3 days) in posting on his website a gallery of about 100 pictures of the event, which guests can review , download and order prints. He completed composing 3 different albums in 10 days. I was very pleased and recommend Jeff for event photography.

Forsyth Designs was the mastermind behind the exceptionally beautiful and customized decor for our wedding. Matt's ability to translate our vision into a reality that far exceeded our expectations while staying on budget was the best "gift" a bride could ask for! He literally transformed a white tent into a stunning lounge-like atmosphere that accommodated our every need and desire. There isn't a large scale event or party that I would consider hosting without collaboration from Forsyth Designs. Working with Matt is seriously delightful on every level!

I told Tri that we would be having a corporate VIP event at Celtra, Inc. and we needed him to take some shots. Tri definitely delivered, he was very professional and took plenty of high quality shots that made Celtra, Inc. look like an appealing company. His turnaround for the photos was only 24 hours and the image quality was excellent. Will definitely hire him again!

I hired The DJ Way, (Isaac) on 10/22/16 for my niece's birthday party and also celebrated her wedding. It was a mixed event, but Isaac was able to mix birthday party songs and romantic wedding songs. This celebration was very important to us because my niece almost lost her life due to a congenital heart condition. She got married during her hospitalization. We were so blessed to have such a fabulous day. I highly recommend Isaac for your next event.

Nic came ahead of time on the day of the event. He coordinated well with the photographer. We hired him for the raw footage of the event and highlights video. He was very responsive over email, and provided raw footage of the event within a week. Highlight video contained well selected scenes.

I hired Mark at Bicycle Ice Cream Films SF to create a video of my doctoral dissertation defense which was held on October 10, 2016. The audience included my dissertation committee members, fellow academic colleagues, and many friends and family members, about 25 guests in all. Working with Mark was a wonderful experience -- he is a true professional in both his craft as well as in how he works with clients. Mark is a proactive communicator, and we were able to do most of our planning via email and text which was great for me as I was preoccupied with preparing my defense presentation. Part of the planning included conducting a site visit of the classroom in which my defense was to be held, so that Mark could assess equipment needs and determine lighting and camera placement in advance. The site visit helped us prepare as we knew that there would be a class in session in the room on the day of my defense and we would not be able to gain access to the room to set up equipment until just 15 minutes prior. So Mark needed to be able to get in, get set up, and be ready to go in a very short period of time. He suggested, and I agreed, to bring in an assistant to help with this operation, at a very reasonable rate. This was factored into his final bid to me which was very reasonable for the work and time involved. On the day of the defense, Mark and his assistant arrived early, staged the equipment in the hall, and once we were able to enter the room, quickly got to work setting it all up. They had it all under control so I could focus on getting my projection equipment set up and my nerves settled before my presentation. Mark was unobtrusive in his filming, and he produced a good highlight reel that captured the essentials of my talk. He took still photos of the event as well, including the champagne reception after the defense after I was declared "Dr. Bauer". The event turned into a joyful celebration and Mark beautifully captured the spirit and the mood of everyone there on this important day. I was happy with all the material Mark produced and I plan to engage him to refine the video footage to create some compelling video material for my professional website. In short, I would like to highly recommend Mark P/Bicycle Ice Cream Films SF for professional/business or documentary production needs.

I hired Keida day before a wedding for my sister in law. Which we didn't expect we would need one. He was SO accommodating and also went above and beyond to stay a bit longer than discussed for our event. He is so fast, efficient and very friendly. He came right on time and due to the last minute booking from phone consultation to day of, he worked with us the best he could. His example works were much better than the other videographers who gave a rate to our budget price. My gut told me to trust him, pay the extra and be his first client for Thumbtack. It was beyond what I expected and he did an excellent job and more! I wish I could give more stars than 5!

We had a tight timeframe to line up a videographer, so the responsiveness along with the quality of their work allowed me to engage with The Royal Roost quickly and confidently. This project was fairly straightforward, but from the coordination, to editing through final delivery, I couldn't have been more satisfied.

Ian was fantastic to work with. He was professional and responsive. We needed to conduct a media training for our client in SF. He was prepared and arrived promptly. Also, he made sure to bring extras of everything in case we need it. I would definitely use Ian again when we need a professional videographer in the SF area.

I had my headshots done with Tri twice and loved them each time! Tri was also kind enough to help with an impromptu clip for a video I was putting together during our last session. Could not recommend him enough for all your photography and videography needs!

Unfortunately I hired Clifton to commemorate my husband's funeral and repass. Although it was a difficult time he was attentive to my requests and I was pleased with the results. The video was professional, editing was seem less and additional footage tasteful. My only regret (which was my responsibility)is that I wish I had more of an idea of what possibilities and upgrades (like additional videographers) would have looked like. Had I realized, I would have had additional camera angles of such an honorable service.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a videographer and what do they do?

A videographer professionally films weddings and other events and edits the footage to create film keepsakes or marketing materials for their clients. Wedding videographers record all the key elements of your wedding day, ceremony and reception, and then edit the hours of film during post-production to make a wedding video, social media highlight reels, and any other film features you choose. Wedding videography captures, in live action, your vows, the cake-cutting, the first dance, reception toasts, the decor, the guests and all the details of your day. Many wedding videographers also interview guests (based on an interview list provided by the couple) and incorporate the recorded responses into the wedding video. Event videography typically costs less than wedding videography, as events are shorter with less detail. The national average cost for event videography is $500-$760, while the national average cost for wedding videography is $990-$1,260. A videographer usually does not need to be licensed, but it is important to confirm they have insurance and good standing in the business community, as well as good client reviews. A great majority of the work happens during post-production. The pros watch and blend together the hours of footage they took (sometimes from multiple cameras) to capture the story of your wedding day or event.

How do you choose a wedding videographer?

A wedding videographer will create a lifetime memory for you from edited video footage of your wedding day, ceremony and reception. Choosing a wedding videographer starts with looking online at portfolios of their past work. There’s no need to talk to anyone unless you love what you see. Next, make sure they have good reviews and past client experience; don’t be shy about asking for references if there aren’t any posted online. When you find someone who has a style you love, ask if they are available on your wedding day. If so, it’s time to talk pricing. Be clear about your maximum budget, and ask what kind of packages they offer. Pricing will depend on the number of crew needed for filming, the hours they are required to be onsite, post-production editing, and the length of the final product. Talk with several wedding videographers to get a feel for what prices are like in your region. Nationally, the average cost for wedding videography ranges between $990 and $1,260 per event. Once you agree on a product and have a plan, get everything in a written and signed contract. Clearly state the details of what is expected for your wedding day and from the final product. Be prepared to pay a deposit to reserve their services for the day, then pay the remainder upon receiving the video.

What should you ask your wedding videographer before hiring?

Finding the perfect wedding videographer doesn’t have to be stressful. Asking a few key questions upfront will help you find the right fit for your big day. Before talking with wedding videographers, research their work online. Look at their websites, business profiles and social media, and see what their finished wedding videos look like. If the style fits what you’re envisioning, it’s time to reach out. During initial contact, make sure you get along with the person. This is important since they’ll be interacting with you and your guests.

Your first question should be about their availability; there’s no point in going further if they’re booked on your wedding day. Ask to see references if they’re not readily available online. Next, it’s time to talk about money. Ask how they determine rates or what kind of packages they offer. When you settle on a rate and the services you want, make sure to have a written contract that outlines everything, including cost, length of time they film, what post-production will include, and when you can expect to receive the edited project.

When do you pay your wedding videographer and wedding photographer?

Most wedding videographers and photographers require a set deposit when you hire them. Wedding season is a busy time and a deposit secures that vendor’s services for your wedding date. It also protects the vendor if the couple changes their mind at the last minute, and they can’t find a new booking and lose work for the day. The deposit may be anywhere from 20 percent to  50 percent of the agreed-upon total price. Always get a written confirmation that your deposit has been received.

The remainder of the wedding videography and photography bill may be due in the week before to your wedding or on the day of the wedding. Other vendors may require a second payment immediately before the wedding and a third and final payment after the wedding video or photos are delivered. Each vendor has their own policies, so before hiring be sure to read, understand and agree to payment protocols. There is no requirement for tipping wedding videographers or photographers, but if you do want to tip them, the end of the reception is the appropriate time.

How much is videography for a wedding?

Wedding videography is one thing many couples regret not paying for. It may seem like just another expense during wedding planning, but it’s really special to have a moving memory of your big day. The national average cost for wedding videography is $990-$1,260. Pricing can vary depending on wedding length, special film features, the amount of editing required, and how many videographers are needed to cover the event. Many videographers offer packages that provide different levels of service. A very simple wedding documentary could be $600 or more, while a full-scale cinematic experience involving multiple videographers could be $2,500 or more. Here’s an example of average package pricing:

  • Package 1: $1,400
    • Footage during and after the ceremony, including highlights requested by the couple.
    • Two cameras with audio equipment.
    • DVD including a 3- or 4-minute edit to a song of the couple’s choice and a 45- to 50-minute raw edit covering the entire event.
    • Recordings of guests’ good wishes to the couple.
  • Package 2: $1,800
    • Includes everything from Package 1, plus an additional videographer (2 total) and aerial videography.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
