I hired David Gomes for installing two toilet fixtures. In addition to installing the fixtures, I had him do tile grouting in the shower and outdoor motion sensing solar light fixtures. He has affable manners and good at what he does. He is very prompt, flexible, and reasonable. I will hire him again without reservations.

Our new rental home warranty plumbing coverage does not include tile work, but the plumber they dispatched needs a bigger opening behind the mixer on the tile shower wall to confirm the source of the leak. I hired Arisel from AA Cardenas Construction to help me with the tile work. I would have hired him for the plumbing work itself if I had known him earlier and had got to choose my own technician under warranty. From the get-go responding to my Thumbtack request for quote to finishing the job, Arisel had been very responsive, professional, friendly, punctual and helpful. The job was beautifully done! While I was writing the check, knowing the job is being contracted to Home Warranty company Arisel still took the initiative to inspect the leak checking the ceiling downstairs and share with me what he thought the problem might be. With him pointing out, I was convinced that he was spot on! Arisel is apparently a hard working, honest and friendly young man! I will definitely hire him again for future jobs. I highly recommend Arisel.

RIcardo was great - super helpful, knowledgeable and efficient. He was incredibly responsive and was willing to pitch in on additional things to help make my move out as smooth as possible. For projects he helped install some flooring, paint, move some furniture and patch some holes. Would recommend him for sure.

Matthew built two wood platforms for our washer & dryer that required some creativity so that they both fit comfortably within the confines of our garage space. He built solid, well-designed platforms with smooth edges. He was thorough and made a point to double check measurements as well as sought feedback from us as he built the platforms. Also installed an on/off switch for our gas line behind the dryer, which was a relief. Maintained a solid professionalism throughout the entire project as well as showed consistent communication. Would hire again without hesitation!

I'm new in town and found Dennis on Thumbtack. He is amazing!! I've worked in the flooring business for years, so I knew what to look for! He is a top of the line professional. Came out for a small 12x12 office carpet job and was finished in 3 hours! Very detail oriented. Works hard till job is complete. Now I will have him quote a larger commercial vinyl job. He truly is the BEST in the business!

I've literally communicated with or contacted at least five contractors over the past two months to complete this flooring job. Salinas was an answer to prayer! Whereas other sites or contractors told me to wait and/or never got back to me or took others jobs, Vyron responded promptly within an hour when I posted the job on Thumbtack. Vyron and Pablo did excellent work putting down a new subfloor and plywood, then installing an LVP (see photos) and a new toilet (not pictured). Vyron communicated about every step of repair and installation and about every purchase for the job. He takes pride in his work and left the work area clean. I'm so glad that the job is finished and that it was done well.

I needed to replace over 800 square feet of old vinyl flooring in my house. I was looking for a contractor that would assume the responsibility for the whole job including fixing any problems that were found. Fortunately a friend recommended Mr. Thayer. He and his crew did an excellent job installing my new flooring. During the installation a small water leak was found in my hallway. Mr. Thayer found a leak detective who located the leak and my pumper fixed the leaking faucet. I am very pleased with the installation and Mr. Thayer’s efforts in fixing the problem. I highly recommend Fred Thayer Carpets for flooring installations to my friends and acquaintances.

Andres and his team went above and beyond in completing our flooring installation ahead of schedule. His team's work was top notch and he is very professional and punctual. I also recommended him for flooring installation in common areas throughout our condo complex and he is working on that right now.

I am extremely pleased with the major renovation of my home including kitchen, bathrooms, and all interior and exterior walls that Lifetime Remodeling completed for me on March. 13, 2018. I certainly welcome the opportunity to give them a five start rating. Everybody at Lifetime was top notch to work with---The supervisors of my project, Sam and Mike, back office and all the workers who came to make the completion of this project a reality were extremely hard working, very professional, and completely trustworthy. I also liked that this company works with many suppliers and saved us thousands of dollars on flooring, marble countertops, tile, cabinets and more. The supervising managers and their workers were also top-notch in every way. Because I am an older, single person it was very important for me to go with a company I could trust from the beginning to the end of the project. I'm thankful and could not be happier. I will gladly recommend this company to anyone who is looking for a general contracting business for their home renovation needs. They're top-notch all the way!

I don't ever write reviews, but I had to take the time to write this one because Marco and Cesar are an amazing team! Marco is extremely knowledgeable, he even helped us when it came to what and how much flooring we should order. I can't say enough about these two. They are hard working, knowledgeable and very professional. Our floor looks beautiful! I wish all of my experiences with contractors could be as good and go as smoothly as this one did. I can't recommend them enough! Thank you again, Marco and Cesar and we will see you guys soon for our next flooring project!

We recently had Green Line complete a major remodel of two of our bathrooms and are delighted with the final product. Greenline was not the lowest bidder but I was impressed with their knowledge and experience and it proved to be the right choice. They did a great job replacing plumbing, electrical, vanities, flooring and all walls were retextured.

Great experience working with Jesus on our hardwood floors. Jesus was our general contractor's subcontractor for hardwood flooring. Out of everyone we worked with on this ~3 months project, he was the best subcontractor. We really trusted his expertise and he made our floors look great, with no squeaks, which is quite a feat for the old house that we have! Even when he suggested some additional work that needed to be done to "flatten" the subfloor, we knew he made the right suggestion and he did the extra work promptly, at a reasonable price, and with great results. We also needed to refinish our old staircase, and it looked so bad that we originally planned to paint it to hide all the damage of the wooden stair treads. But Jesus was able to work his refinishing magic and we now have beautiful, stained stair steps.

I had recently decided to get all new bedroom furniture, and when I moved the old furniture out - I discovered that somehow when my dog was a puppy, he was able to squeeze himself under my bed and dressers and pee in multiple areas, that were unseen until now. Distressed, and with new furniture on the way, I needed to get my floor fixed in a hurry, there was no way I'm sleeping with all new furniture on pee stained floors. So after reading some yelp reviews, I decided to contact Andro. He responded within an hour, and we made an appointment for him to look at my floor. After giving me a quote, he was able to start the work in a few days, and finish well before my deadline. What impressed me about Andro was his prompt communication. Anytime I emailed or texted him, I got an immediate response. The next most impressive thing was his knowledge of flooring - he used the latest materials and techniques, and was able to explain what he was doing and why. Then came the finished floor - absolutely amazing work. He had the difficult task of replacing those pee stained boards, as well as matching the color to the rest of the house, since he was only refinishing part of it. I was also impressed by how clean he keeps his work area - he sealed off and protected all the parts of the house that might be effected by the dust from sanding. Andro is the third person to have ever worked on my floors, and I say this with all sincerity, he is by far the best. Going forward, he's going to be the only person I call when I need work done. Please don't hesitate to use his services, you won't regret it.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How long does it take to install a hardwood floor?

Hardwood floor installation can take anywhere from a few days to more than two weeks, depending on demolition, wood type, the condition of your subfloor, total square footage of the project, and installation method. Demolition is necessary if you have existing flooring you want to replace with hardwood floors. New-construction homes do not require this step, as the subfloor is primed and ready for floor installation. During demolition, the flooring crew may find that your subfloor has damaged wood, uneven surfaces or other problems that must be addressed before the new wood can be laid down. Crews may charge on an hourly rate for subfloor repair, and the work can take a few hours to several days, depending on what’s hiding underneath your floor. The wood for your new floor generally arrives a few days before any work begins. This allows the wood to acclimate to the relative humidity in your house, which prevents it from shrinking or expanding after installation and causing gaps or buckling. The actual wood installation may take several days or more, depending on the size of your home and what type of custom cutting and designs are desired. If your flooring is not prefinished, the unfinished wood must then be sanded and stained in the home to treat and protect your new investment. Typically, stain takes a full day to dry, and multiple coats are applied. Baseboards and trim must also be installed. With all these variables at play, you can see why it’s important for a wood installation pro to provide an estimate only after seeing your home.

How much does it cost to install flooring?

On average, Thumbtack customers nationwide pay $5,500 for floor installation. The cost can range much lower or higher depending on the type of flooring you select (laminate is far less expensive than exotic hardwood), the square footage of the project, and other important variables like demolition and repair work needed. Here are some examples of average floor installation cost:

  • Basic floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
    • This can range up to $7 or $8 per square foot when tear-out and prep work is required.
  • Laminate floor and installation cost: $3-$8 per square foot.
    • Laminate is one of the most affordable materials and can start as low as $1.50 per square foot.
  • Wood floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
    • $7 and up for hand-scraped oak planks and other specialized work.
  • Luxury vinyl tile installation: $3.50+ per square foot (not including tiles).
    • Cost includes prep work, underlayment, leveling and grouting.
  • Examples of additional floor installation costs:
    • Pouring concrete to level the under-flooring: $1,000-$1,500 for materials and labor.
    • Removing carpet: 35 cents or more per square foot.
    • Removing difficult ceramic or porcelain tile: about $2.25 per square foot.
      • Includes removal of the dura rock.
  • Floor repair: $75 minimum.

How much does it cost to install hardwood floors?

The cost of hardwood floors will depend primarily on the total square footage of flooring, the type of wood you select, the cost of labor in your region, and any preparation or repair work that needs to take place before installation. Selecting exotic woods, such as teak, will result in a higher cost for the project than a more affordable wood such as oak. The national average cost of hardwood floor installation is $5,750. Here are some examples of different woods and their average costs; actual costs will vary depending on the factors listed above.

  • Basic wood floor installation: $3 per square foot from a wood floor installation company.
    • The product cost for hand-scraped ¾-inch oak planks: $7 per square foot.
  • 620 square feet of maple floor:
    • Residential installation, total project cost: ~ $2,400 with five days of labor.
    • ¾-inch dark stained maple installed on top of new concrete in three rooms, a hallways, and a staircase.
      • Cost for total project: ~$3.87 per square foot.

How much are oak hardwood floors?

Installing oak hardwood floors can add value and beauty to your home. The cost of hardwood floors is typically based on the overall square footage of your new floor, the type of oak you select, any repair work your subfloor requires prior to installation, and any demolition costs to remove your old flooring. Other factors that will affect your total cost can include the regional cost of labor and business overhead of your flooring company.

A flooring installation company may charge $3 per square foot for standard installation. For hand-scraped (higher-end) ¾-inch oak planks, the cost is approximately $7 per square foot, for a total cost per square foot of about $10 as long as no repair work is required. Standard oak planks are available from big-box stores for as low as $3 per square foot, so the quality of oak you want will affect your total project cost.
