Kevin did a very good job installing my water heater. Was very thorough with sending me before and after pics. However, he did not take the old water heater away, so I will have to looking into paying someone to come out to do this. Would have been nice if he took care of this. This is the only reason for the 4 stars. Otherwise would have been 5 stars.

David is fantastic; he is definitely going to be our go to guy for any handy services around the house from now on. We asked David for a couple of things that involved going down into our crawl space. He’s fixed our dryer exhaust, fixed plumbing leaks and installed a gas line. If I could give David 10 stars I would. He is says he will do the job and will work on it till the job is done. We couldn’t be happier finding a guy like him. I highly recommend using him for all your handyman needs.

Ricardo has been great! First he installed our gas dryer. Arrived on time, finished his works quickly and handed over the receipt of materials he picked up at Home Depot. The following week he built a platform in our garage and finished the job quicker than expected. Again clearly detailing his material purchases. Highly recommended!

I had scheduled quote from multiple companies. However, once I spoke to Shlomi , I just decided to move forward with him. Glad it was a good decision. During estimation, Angel did not offer me the most pricey option. He offered me what is most optimal. And the carrier furnace is extremely quiet. Initially I had opted for heater, and air-conditioning. But electrical re-work ended up skewing my budget and ended up going with heater only. This did not affect the work quality by ESI Repairs & Upgrades in any way. They still installed the Nest thermostat and cleaned all the vents. What I also like most about ESI Repairs & Upgrades team is responsiveness. They deliver what the promise, I got the system just like the other pictures show up in Thumbtack and Shlomi takes the call to address any concern or help needed after the installation.

Baji was responsive, courteous, honest and professional. He arrived earlier than expected during the Labor Day holiday during a record heat wave. I was worried about enduring a 110 degree day without air conditioning. I wish everyone was like him! Thank you so much!

This is the first time in my life that I have taken the time to write a review on any contractor I have hired. That's because, although most have been pretty good, I have not found any to be so extraordinary that I have been motivated to take more time from my schedule to review their work. Until Kevin! I am so gratified that the information on his company, Eastbay Heating and Air, was provided to me in response to my request. I had a heating problem associated with my "top of the line" Carrier Infinity furnace and had been told by another contractor that "in all his years of experience", he had never seen this problem. He then went on to advise me the furnace would need to be replaced at a cost of $6,000 (which he later reduced to $4800 because we are repeat customers). I spoke with Kevin on the telephone that evening and he essentially recognized and diagnosed the problem based upon my recitation of what I was told and observed. He came to our home the next morning at 7:00 am and by 7:45 am, we had heat again!!!! Although he had other customers he needed to get to on time (having fit me in--- and during commute hours, no less), he took the time to educate me on our system, explained how the unique zones behave, the significance of the sounds emanating from the ducts that we had been wondering about, and the maintenance requirements. The bill for all of this? $189.00!!!! Need I say more?

I recently bought a house with a central heating and air conditioning system. I was frustrated to find that the system did not work efficiently over the summer. I was then more frustrated to find that it barely worked at all this winter. I called Healthy duct cleaning because they had great reviews on another website as well.. They did a very thorough inspection and made multiple recommendations. I ended up having them clean out, sanitize, and rat proof my attic. They were very easy to work with, they were punctual, and they did an amazing job. They even did a good job cleaning up after themselves. I was very impressed. two months later I had them back out to replace all the ducting. The technician was a pleasure to work with. At every step of the way I have been provided with a detailed estimate of the recommended work. They have always itemized these estimates and helped me prioritize which jobs should be done first. They've been very accommodating with payments and with scheduling. I couldn't be happier!

I don’t usually write reviews but I thought it was only right to provide feedback for the outstanding service Inreceived from Josh at Ohana Air. I originally contacted Josh when I noticed that water was dripping down the side of my house and coming from a PVC pipe sticking out of the attic just under the eve of my two house. Josh showed up early for our appointment the very next day and immediately found the cause of the problem. It turns out the drip was coming from normal condensation created by the evaporator qoils from my AC unit. Instead of draining out the primary drain, it was actually coming out the backup drain that was running down the side of my house creating rust stains on the stucco. The primary drain was clogged with dirt and gunk which redirected the water to the backup. Josh quickly cleared and tested the primary as well as the secondary drain and noted that it was good that he was contacted because the secondary could have also gotten clocked and backup into the house causing serious water damage. What I especially appreciated was that Josh took the time to show me where to check and how to clear the drain if the issue ever came up again. He also did a cursory review of my AC unit and condensers and check the ducts in the attic for possible leaks. Wow, what great service! Josh is a true professional and master of his craft. I would strongly recommend Josh and Ohana Air for any heating and air conditioning service needs!

I was in the market for a new heating and air conditioning system. I had four companies come out, and these guys blew the competition out of the water. It was funny, I thought I wanted a more expensive system, and the gentleman who came out actually talked me out of spending more money because the return on my investment was not there. Who else does that? They say that like to treat everyone like family, and that is how I felt. The experience was a lot of fun too. The original phone call, service man, and Installers were absolutely great. I'd give them one hundred stars if I could.

Carlos and his team did a great job and on short notice. They completely replaced all heating and air ducting in the entire home (1800 square feet). He was very professional and gave us lots of good information on heating and cooling that was outside of the work he was doing. He and is crew finished all the work one day and removed all old materials. Not only did I feel he was the most professional and knowledgeable, but his price was the best out of 4 bid we received, can't beat that. Great job Carlos!

JR and his team were FANTASTIC! We had a fully occluded dryer vent that we thought just needed cleaning - as it turns out, it had been poorly installed and completely busted! JR found a great solution to re-route the vent, and it looks great! We also had his team add in a heating system vent cleaning-- they were so thorough with our very dirty ducts!! Work was done with high quality and for a great price! Highly recommend this company!!

Superb! After looking around and getting multiple estimates we finally found the perfect company for the job. Ricardo, the owner of Bayhill Heat and Air is a very honest guys, he runs a very professional and well rounded company. What he promised is what he delivered. He ensures the work is done to exceed the customer's expectations and especially his own (which is way beyond what I was expecting). The crew came, worked nonstop to deliver the system on time and everything looked unbelievably good. They didn't cut any corners to make it perfect. Thanks Ricardo (and team) , your company is the best HVAC company in town, hands down.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How often should you get your air ducts cleaned?

How often you should clean your air ducts depends on your situation. If you or someone in the home has asthma or is acutely allergic to certain airborne materials or pollen, regular duct cleaning may be helpful. The Environmental Protection Agency doesn’t have an official position on the necessity of air duct cleaning unless the ducts have been contaminated by rodents, insects or mold, or you are aware of particles blowing out through the vents. The EPA recommends you have your air ducts cleaned on an as-needed basis. The National Air Duct Cleaners Association (NADCA) suggests having air ducts cleaned every three to five years.

Be cautious with companies that offer “whole house air duct cleaning,” urges the NADCA. The company may be using unscrupulous tactics to upsell you once they get started. Before any work begins, always clarify in writing what the job entails and what the cost will be. To protect yourself against fraud, read customer reviews and verify that your HVAC cleaning service has applicable licenses and certifications.

What is an HVAC system?

The letters in HVAC stand for heating, ventilation and air conditioning. An HVAC system enables you to regulate your home or building’s internal temperature (thermal control) for comfortable living and working. You can bring heat levels down in the summer and up in the winter, keeping your home or office livable year-round. HVAC systems can also help with humidity levels and regulate indoor air quality in a home or office. There are many types of HVAC systems and technologies available.

Many homes have a forced-air HVAC system. Both the heating and the central air conditioning units share a ductwork system where they either push in or pull out warm or cooled air. There are also heating and cooling systems that don’t require ductwork — such as ductless mini-splits — but work on the same principles of heat exchange. The national average to hire an HVAC specialist is $2,920-$3,670, with costs varying depending on the work you need done and the equipment you are installing.

Do you need to clean your air ducts?

Air duct cleaning is done by heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) professionals. The pros use industrial-strength, truck-mounted vacuums and powerful brushes and hoses to clean inside the metal ducts that make up your forced air heating and cooling system. The Environmental Protection Agency recommends duct cleaning if there is “substantial visible mold growth inside hard surface ducts, ducts that are infested with vermin such as rodents or insects, or ducts that are clogged with excessive amounts of dust and debris and/or particles are actually released into the home from your supply registers.”

You should also have air ducts cleaned after recent water contamination or water damage to prevent mold; after renovations or remodeling to ensure debris and dust didn’t settle in the vents and ducts; if you are having problems with allergies or asthma; or when you are moving into a newly purchased home, especially if the previous owners smoked or had pets. The National Air Duct Cleaners Association (NADCA) recommends getting your air ducts cleaned every three to five years, or every two to three years in regions where homeowners use their air conditioning and heater for many months of the year, while the EPA suggests homeowners have duct cleaning done as needed.

How many years does HVAC last?

The number of years an HVAC system lasts depend on the type and brand of components that make up your system. The lifespan of an air conditioner averages between 15 and 20 years. The life expectancy of a tankless water heater is approximately 20 years, while a storage water heater is closer to 10-15 years. Ducts may need replacing within 10-15 years. Your equipment will have a longer life if you have regular tuneups and maintenance to keep everything in good working order. If you’re having repair problems and your HVAC system is over 10 years old, it’s a good time to consider the costs and benefits of repairing vs. replacing. Energystar.gov provides the following tips to help you decide whether to repair or replace:

  • Your HVAC system needs frequent repairs and your energy bills are increasing.
  • Your cooling or heating equipment is less efficient.
  • Rooms in your home are too hot or too cold.
  • Your heat pump or air conditioner is more than 10 years old.
    • Replacing your system with an Energy Star-certified unit could save up to 20 percent on your heating and cooling bills.
  • Your furnace or boiler is more than 15 years old.
    • You may choose to replace your system with an Energy Star-certified furnace (which is 15 percent more efficient than a conventional furnace) or an Energy Star-certified boiler (which is 5 percent more efficient).
  • Your home has humidity problems.
  • Your home has excessive dust.
    • Leaky ducts can pull particles and air from attics, crawl spaces and basements and distribute them throughout your house. Sealing your ducts may be a solution.
  • Your heating or cooling system is noisy.
    • You could have an undersized duct system or a problem with the indoor coil of your cooling equipment.
  • Your score on the Home Energy Yardstick is below five.
    • That means your home energy use is above average and you're probably paying too much for your utilities.

How much does it cost to get central air?

Prices for central-air HVAC systems will vary. The national average to hire an HVAC specialist is $2,920-$3,670 but can run as high as $5,000 or even $12,000 depending on the capacity you need and other factors. Installing central air conditioning requires an entire system that works together to draw hot air out of your home. The system includes an outdoor unit, which houses the condenser and compressor, and the evaporator coils. If you don’t have an existing duct system, ductwork will need to be installed, which will affect labor and material costs. Leaking or damaged ducts will also need to be replaced.
