Sara came out to our home and gave us a great walk-through of Magnificent's gardening services. She took her time to look over the plants and shrubs, even pointing out the ones that were damaged by our recent termite cleanup service. She's clearly very knowledgeable about the kind of plants that can be grown here, she had great ideas for developing our garden. Looking forward to working with her, will keep updating this review.

Jose Franco was so wonderful to work with. He was always punctual and highly professional. We had a leak in our garden and he spent time trouble shooting and finally finding the source of the leak and was able to fix it. The best part of working with Jose is how nice he is and his desire to have me understand exactly what he was doing. He has fantastic "people" skills and is an excellent communicator. I would recommend him highly to anyone who needs an irrigation specialist.

We hired Metthew to build a 40' long 3' high retaining wall and then move a LOT of soil, in order to level a back garden area. He was knowledgeable, reasonable, and exactly on time for all planning meetings and work meetings. Most notable was his very clear communication, ability to suggest solutions, and quality of crew and work product. Matthew is highly recommended and we will CERTAINLY work with him again!

Benito and his guys did an awesome job with the project we had done in my backyard. We are so pleased with the outcome. We hired Benito for a very large project involving junk removal, fence replacement, landscape design, flowerbeds, concrete removal and pouring, sprinkler repair, and sod laying. We have a completely transformed backyard now. In the beginning, he asked me what did I have in mind and got an idea of what I wanted. From that, we created a layout that would work for me. During the installation, he made it a point to make sure I was happy with everything before we proceeded to the next phase. We even made a road trip to the rock yard, so I could pick out the type & color of rocks that I wanted in the planter beds. I picked out and bought my own plants and flowers. He helped me decide what type of plants and trees would look good. I ended up getting some Japanese Maples, Bougainvilleas, Banana palms, and some grasses. They gladly planted them where I decided I liked them. He also helped me give my concrete a design element that I really love. He put in a "salted" boarder that gave a nice touch. We put a round concrete slab in the yard, that I want to place some chairs and a portable fire pit on. We are almost ready for our first family get-together. I wanted to post pictures, just note that I haven't quite finished staining the fence, but I will post anyways. Benito gave me a fair price and made sure to stay within my budget. I am very happy with the finished project and can't wait to have him come back and replace our other side fence and redesign the front yard also!

Guansito and his team were really great to work with. They were possibly the most responsive, punctual, and responsible team I have ever worked with. He responded immediately, quoted quickly, and completed our job in record time. (We were in a real time crunch and he exceeded our expectations in terms of his completion of the job.) He came back without complaint when there was a slight misstep (we share the blame because I was not there when a particular decision was made about how much rock to put in) and handled the matter professionally and was beyond fair. Came back out to assist us with sprinklers and again was kind, responsive, and thorough. Would highly recommend his team to execute any outdoor project. (We have a drought tolerant/succulent garden and I don't think design of this type of garden is their specialty, but they rose to the occasion and came through with flying colors.

To create some additional space in the top floor of my garden cottage, I wanted to take advantage of the high ceilings and have a loft space installed. It was important to me that none of the floor space underneath was compromised, and wanted to avoid using supports from the floor. Jasper came over, took the time to understand my needs & vision, and offered a tremendous amount of support and advice as we pursued the design. He presented me with different options, and was sensitive to my pricing considerations. Ultimately, we decided it was best to pursue a minimally viable solution, and then expand on it as my needs changed. Within a week, Jasper showed up with his friend, a truck full of lumber, and got to business. He showed up at noon, and was done by 8pm. He was happy to make adjustments and modifications I requested weeks after completion (at no additional charge), left my home clean, and really took pride in his work. He was friendly, professional, and stood behind his work 100%. It was truly a pleasure to have Jasper come and turn my loft space vision into a reality that was far better than anything I could have imagined at a great price and on budget. I look forward to using him again for my future projects.

Richard transformed my rough garden design ideas into a space that I truly enjoy. His attention to detail in construction and landscaping is impressive. Richard cleared the overgrown chaos, built a large planter box, 2 trellises and installed a feature paver and gravel patio. The fence was repaired and reimagined, trees and bushes pruned properly and a gravel pathway installed in the side yard. Richard took particular pride in his work, was punctual, professional, reliable and pleasant and always left the workspace tidy and ready for the next day's work. I highly recommend Richard and Pacific Garden Artistry for garden design and construction.

I am very glad that I chose Water Pivot for my backyard landscape and hardscape. First off, he introduced me to Ali Atar, who did a 3D design for my backyard so I could see everything before it was done. Ali did a fantastic job and was very accommodating to my changes and request. Then, Milad and his crew did an amazing job on my backyard installing pavers according to the design. They were here everyday early morning and work very hard the entire day. They also changed all my irrigation systems and made my backyard garden beautiful by adding flowers and plants. They did such a great job that I asked them to also fix my driveways that had so many crakes. They installed pavers and turned my driveway like a brand new house. Now, that all my backyard and driveway looks brand new, I had to do something with my porch. Milad suggested that I install tiles and he brought one of his best contractor, Farzin Golpod to install the tiles. Farzin, is very detail oriented and takes his time to do his job not just good but great. Maild is very honest guy and it was a pleasure working with him. I would recommend Water Pivot to all my friends and neighbors who need a good landscape/hardscape company.

Chris was very helpful and professional. We had two different options we were considering. Chris developed a plan for each. There was an additional charge for the second plan. He started by working with my wife and I to understand the general concept of what we wanted. He then went through many pictures of plants to identify those which we preferred. Once he had an idea of what we were looking for, he sat down and developed the two designs. We went over each plan and he again showed us the pictures of the plants he had specified in the design. There were a few minor changes, but we were very satisfied with both options. Chris is very knowledgeable about the Lawn to Garden reimbursement programs and he guided us through the necessary steps to apply for our refunds. He also recommended a few landscapers. We used the plans to request bids from each of the landscapers and chose one to build our garden. We are extremely satisfied with the final product and much of the credit goes to Chris.

Ethan is fantastic to work with, professional, responsive, kind, friendly, communicative and responsible. He has transformed our front and back yard into a California style english garden with a mix of CA natives, succulents and more. Everyday I come home and smile watching the bees and birds flit around the yard (before and after). I agree with a previous reviewer, Ethan is a landscape artist. I highly recommend and wouldn't hesitate to hire him for future landscaping projects.

I have worked with Summit Landscaping and Elaine for several landscaping designs at our house. I learned that she used to work for one of the world’s iconic retail store design teams, and this background is reflected in the sophistication and professionalism of the work. Most recent was a stunning front yard patio rock garden. We’ve had neighbors driving down this way to admire it. One told me it belonged in Sunset magazine... Elaine has an exceptional eye, and her designs will transform ugly and forgotten parts of your property into beautiful living space. She also chooses the best plants and flowers, integrated perfectly and suitable for our climate. Her crew is very reliable, and all our projects finished on time.

Max & team revived our backyard area. They turned our embarrassingly shabby storage area to a beautiful new outdoor lounge space with deck, flower garden and fire pit in a matter of 3 days! I was stunned with the speed and and am so pleased with the quality.

He is very creative and built a garden glass house that we both designed. He did not have to use one nail. He is a master carpenter. It is better to pay a flat fee than by the hour.

I've been designing gardens in the San Francisco Bay Area for nearly 20 years, so I have a very good feel for designs from modern to traditional, from xeriscape to Japanese and cottage gardens. Having written two books on garden design and having served as senior editor of the past three editions of the Sunset Western Garden Book, I feel that my knowledge of plants is extensive - although there are too many great plants out there for anyone to say they know them all!

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a landscape contractor do?

Landscape contractors work from outdoor architectural or design plans to build and install hardscaping or softscaping for the client, much as a general contractor uses architectural designs to build a house. Landscape contractors are experts in soil drainage, grading, hardscaping (installing concrete paths and retaining wall, building ponds, etc.), and planting. They have heavy equipment such as excavators and tractors to prepare the land as needed.

Some landscape contractors are also landscape architects or landscape designers. The titles can be compared with those in home construction: A building or landscape architect must earn a specialized architecture degree and pass an exam to have a license. A designer — whether an interior designer or a landscape designer — does not usually require a license to work. Landscape contractors are not required by law to work from plans designed by a landscape architect, so you may work directly with the landscape contractor to specify the work you’d like done. The national average cost for large-scale landscaping projects is $10,160. Pricing can vary greatly depending on the project scope, materials and design.

How do you find a good landscape architect?

Hiring a landscape architect is an investment in your home. Landscaping can reduce water bills, improve your home resale value, add to your daily living experience and significantly boost curb appeal. A landscape architect will draw the designs for your new landscape; you’ll want to hire a landscape contractor to carry out the plans. Many companies provide design-build landscaping services, with a company architect creating plans for your vision and the landscape contractor executing the vision. With the proper academic background and licensing, a person can be both landscape architect and landscape contractor. Here are a few tips for finding a great landscape architect:

      • Research online portfolios and find several landscape architects whose work interests you.
      • Read online reviews of client experiences.
      • Research whether the landscape architects you are interested in are currently licensed and in good standing with the licensing board, and check whether any complaints have been issued against them. Each state will have their own searchable database. For example, you can search for California landscape architects via the state’s Department of Consumer Affairs.
      • Request bids from your selected landscape architects.
      • Hire the one you like the most, taking care to have a clearly written contract outlining scope of work.

For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

What should you look for when hiring a landscaper?

Landscaping can be costly — though it usually pays off in curb appeal and home resale value — so finding a landscaper who is worth the investment is important. When hiring a landscaper, look for proven success with the type of results you want. For example, if you know you want a drought-tolerant yard, research websites, reviews and portfolios that showcase beautiful drought-tolerant yards that the landscaper has installed. In addition to relevant experience, you’ll want to find a landscape contractor who has good client reviews. Good communication skills are another important quality in a landscape contractor, since everything from plant selection to hardscape installation needs to be discussed and agreed upon. A landscape contractor who is reliable, easy to understand and able to listen to what you want will help make the process seamless and enjoyable.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
