Sven is awesome. He is a highly talented musician, who's kind, encouraging, and super patient. I felt very comfortable asking him questions, and I never felt rushed. He listens very intently, and is very eager to teach you how to play. I can't wait to get more lessons from him. I would highly recommend him for anyone wanting to learn guitar!

Mindy responded very promptly to my request. I liked that she had samples of her singing to listen to in her reply. She also very kindly offered to come to my house for a lesson when she understood that I was without a car and therefore unable to travel to her studio. Mindy is cheerful and encouraging and she focusses on healthy singing techniques to bring out a voice's natural capacity (rather than forcing sounds which could result in injury).

Andi is a really awesome guitar instructor. I started guitar lessons with him with absolutely no experience playing an instrument or knowing how to read sheet music. But because he is really patient, knowledgeable, and at ease with teaching, I have been able to pick up how to play the guitar and reading the tab handouts he gives me after each lesson. He goes at the student’s pace and is willing to change his lessons to teach what new songs I want to learn. After each lesson I am always inspired and reminded why I wanted to take up guitar lessons in the first place. Andi was the very first instructor I met and I’m glad I did. I could not recommend him highly enough as an instructor.

Sarah is amazing! I had only had about 4 lessons with Sarah when my friends wanted to go out for karaoke. None of my friends knew I was taking singing lessons and they were surprised. I got so many compliments! I was so happy that even just after a few lessons, I could already take away tools that Sarah taught me and put them into action! I was very lucky to find her. I had searched for awhile for a vocal coach and they were either too expensive, really far or in group setting (which I was too nervous to do being a beginner). I very much enjoy my one-on-one lessons with her. She's so sweet and makes you feel so welcomed and keeps you in good spirits about training your voice! I will definitely be continuing my lessons with her! Thank you Sarah!! :)

We weren't sure what to expect from a self-defense class, but Max offered me a good breakdown over email prior to the coming in to teach, and once here, he was good about demonstrating techniques and allowing the class to do as much or as little as they were comfortable with. I found Max's lessons to be practical for the common person, and his teaching style is to the point, but relaxed. He'll answer questions as you go along and help you to chain together the different things he teaches you. We've asked him back for every other week, so he's definitely doing the right things! We have a lot of fun, but also learn a lot from Max.

I have taken lessons from David Williams for about 6 years and i feel strongly like i learned something from every lesson. David didn't only help me with guitar playing, but he became my songwriting mentor. I have played with a few bands now and am fully capable of holding my own on stage, but i wouldn't be where i am today without the knowledge i obtained from David. Also, hes one of the most kind and genuine people I've ever met.

My family has started lessons with Juan Carlos, and we're happy we found him. He's a patient teacher who structures lessons based on each student's progression and skill set. He also teaches the "right" way, i.e. fundamentals, thereby setting up students for success. It also helps that he's a nice guy and is extremely responsive with scheduling etc.

I was 17 years old when I first met Ann. I had singing classes with other teachers since age of 5, but I still couldn’t control my voice. After the first month of lessons with Ann my range expanded almost to 4 octaves and I finally was able to sing all the contemporary songs that I liked. I started to like my voice and my fear of being on stage was gone!!! Ann is a great coach! She’s talented, experienced and very passionate about sharing her experience and knowledges with others. The road to Perfection is long, but with Ann Souren you can be sure you WILL reach the destination in the shortest possible time!

I have been taking lessons from Nando for over a year now and really love the flexibility his lessons provide. He is so willing to help accommodate your schedule. His lessons are a good reminder to keep up with my learning and speaking Spanish. Since I only take 1 lesson a week, I have to do additional learning on my own (which everyone should do anyway) but I like the lessons so much that I just renewed!

I've had two lessons with Ken so far, after returning from a 10 year hiatus from playing piano. He has been able to simplify aspects of piano playing that were previously unlearnable for me in just two hours! Ken is a passionate teacher, who makes learning fun. I'd happily recommend him to anyone wanting to learn piano and have fun doing it.

Liz is the real deal. She was able to pick up on the needs of my daughter and focus on that. She didn't waste time on things already learned or trying to reteach or practice things already known. She makes the lesson count without making it onerous. She is a true professional willing to teach the serious student. She is also kind, motivating (without being condescending) and understanding. I appreciate her flexibility and adaptability in working with my teen daughter. Because of her my daughter is enjoying singing!

I've been playing guitar by myself for a couple of years through tabs/video lessons etc. My progress has exponentially increased since Sedat has started teaching. He is one of the most patient and polite teachers I've seen.He was very quick to gauge my understanding of music and the instrument and planned my lessons accordingly. I have been trying to understand music theory for a while. Sedat's lessons are an amalgam of theory, technique (finger exercises) and songs. I'm finally able to understand what I'm playing rather than just learning through tabs. He has a wide knowledge of different techniques used in many genres (Rock, Jazz, Blues, Fusion etc) and can help his student improve their craft in the style they love. Needless to say, he's a brilliant guitarist himself. I once attended one of his concerts and it was amazing. I've struggled with self-learning through various means but learning with Sedat has been a huge positive enforcement in my guitar playing. His versatility with his music and patience with the students makes him an amazing teacher and I'd recommend students of all levels and age to learn from him.

Dylan is a great teacher. He is very patient, and very interested in meeting his student's needs. In my case, I was most interested in improving my songwriting skills, and Dylan is helping me by giving me great feedback on my efforts, suggesting new riffs and embellishments, and working on my guitar technique and music theory understanding. He is a fountain of knowledge and someone you can take lessons with for a long time.

We have been working with Ms. White since January 2016. My boys, ages 6 and 7 walked out of their very first lesson knowing “Mary Had A Little Lamb” and this quick, concrete “take away” gave them a sense of excitement and confidence! Ms. White is very thoughtful with her instruction. She has realistic and responsive goals--like helping accommodate a variety of sports seasons and understanding the difference between her student’s temperament and attention span. She has nurtured an intrinsic and age appropriate interest and exposure to the world of piano playing. My boys pick up and play piano on their own and they love teaching their father and me their new skills. I would highly recommend Ms. White for piano lessons.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is CPR training?

Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (better known as CPR) is a lifesaving manual technique that pumps oxygenated blood back into the body’s organs if someone’s heart or breathing has stopped. A variety of CPR training is available to community members, employees and healthcare providers. CPR training may last two to five hours or more, depending on the content and the target audience. During the training, students will learn how to recognize and respond to an emergency situation. There are different CPR techniques for adults and children, but with both you will learn how to determine whether the person is conscious before administering chest compression. During the training you’ll learn chest compression techniques for adults and different techniques for children between the ages of 1 and 8. Students learn how to properly administer chest compressions, when the technique is appropriate and when it is not, and how long you must perform rescue measures. Students also learn what an automatic external defibrillator (AED) is and how to use it if necessary to shock a patient before administering CPR chest compressions.

How do I become CPR and first aid certified?

You can earn CPR training and receive first aid certification in a number of ways. Choose an online course to learn the materials remotely and then find a testing location to complete the certification process with an in-person demonstration of your knowledge and skills. Encourage your workplace to host a first aid and CPR training so employees can learn what to do in case of a workplace emergency and how to respond with lifesaving techniques. You may also be able to take a CPR or first aid class in your community. A basic CPR training may run four to five hours. After receiving CPR training, you’ll know how to respond if an adult or a child goes into cardiac arrest or stops breathing. You’ll learn how to use chest compressions to keep blood pumping to a person’s organs, which can keep them alive until an emergency responder can arrive. First aid and CPR training can also include education about how to use an automated external defibrillator (AED).

What does a Spanish tutor do?

The goal of a Spanish tutor is to help students improve their Spanish reading, writing, comprehension, and conversation skills. The tutor’s approaches may vary, depending on whether the instruction is individual or a group class. Many Spanish tutors practice immersion — meaning they will speak only Spanish with their pupils. For students with little to no Spanish experience, the Spanish tutor may use a mix of Spanish and English to accustom their students to speaking the language.

A Spanish tutor can offer a wide range of services to their students. For students currently enrolled in a Spanish class through their middle school or high school, a Spanish tutor can help them with homework and language practice, as well as expanding their understanding of their current school curriculum. For adults, Spanish tutors will have different approaches based on that student’s need. Academics and those seeking high-level professional development for their career will often have more intensive and targeted lessons, drills, and interactive speaking tests. For adults who wish to learn conversational Spanish for fun or for travel, lessons may revolve around learning commonly used phrases and practicing speaking in relaxed settings.

What is first aid training?

With first aid training, you may be able to help save a life. First aid training can teach people who are not medical professionals how to help a sick or injured person in crisis before an ambulance arrives on the scene. Most commonly, first aid training helps teach you how to administer cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and use automated external defibrillators (AEDs).

First aid training can teach you how to respond in a variety of emergency situations, including:

  • Asthma attack
  • Anaphylaxis
  • Burns
  • Choking
  • Diabetic emergencies
  • External bleeding
  • Heart attack
  • Poisoning
  • Neck, head or back injury
  • Stroke
  • Seizure

First aid training classes may be offered by professionals who are affiliated with the Red Cross, which offers online, in-person, and blended training classes. First aid classes are also often offered through local recreation centers, city services, schools, hospitals and private companies.

What do you learn in a first aid course?

First aid training gives you a variety of lifesaving skills for responding to many different emergency situations. In a first aid course you’ll learn about how to examine someone who’s been hurt, how to use a defibrillator, how to administer cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), and how to control bleeding and trauma. Some courses include pediatric first aid as well as adult first aid; helping a choking infant, for example, is different from helping a choking adult. Although you can take CPR and automated external defibrillator (AED) courses separately, most first aid training includes both.

In a first aid course you’ll also learn how to respond to:

  • Wounds, including punctures, cuts and hemorrhages
  • Heart attacks, chest pain and respiratory arrest
  • Bone fractures, sprains and torn muscles
  • First-, second- and third-degree burns
  • Poisoning
  • Choking
  • Bites and stings
  • Hypothermia or frostbite
  • Shock and seizures
