We were very fortunate to find Clifford as our son's piano teacher for the past two and half years! As an accomplished and professional pianist himself, Clifford is knowledgeable and skilled at music. He provides a balance of fun and challenge which ensures that our son continues to progress but doesn't get frustrated. Clifford techniques to teach piano to children are helpful and effective. My son enjoys going to lessons and is making great progress!

Started going for violin lessons (I'm in my 20's with no music background). Had only a couple of classes so far. I really like the pace and her style of teaching. She is professional and very easy to work with.

I have been taking guitar lessons from David Williams for a few months now. I always look forward to my classes with him. He is a professional who is patient and understanding. Besides instructing me on guitar, he is also teaching me how to sing! He teaches me what I need to learn on the guitar in order to advance my knowledge. He is also open to me bringing in songs I want to play. He is a supportive teacher who is sincerely interested in his student's learning. He breaks down complicated musical concepts in a step by step process that enhances student confidence and mastery. I highly recommend David Williams.

I am an adult with zero music education, I love classical music and decided to start playing piano for pleasure. Acquiring a skill is a project in our busy lives, a piano teacher is a partner in such a project, you need to find the one who would make it work. Finding Stella has been great for me. She is very flexible and dynamic, so far we have been able to schedule regular bi-weekly lessons despite the fact I live in Portland and Berkeley and keep traveling between them. More importantly, Stella is very efficient at utilizing the little time we spend together. She spends half of the lesson time reviewing homework and the rest of the lesson discussing assignment with demos in class. She starts by asking me to exercise my hands at the new assignment in class, she gives comments on posture, hand position and movement of my wrests, fingering and sheet reading. She emphasizes the purpose of the assignment (speed, muscles strengthening ... etc). While I am exercising she is always busy writing notes on my performance and things to watch for and new assignments. *She is super efficient at using the lesson time*. I definitely recommend Stella. I think she can be your partner in your piano project.

She's very knowledgable. Singing can be frustrating because both you and your teacher are trying to undo years of bad habits that has developed over the years without you knowing. Some days it feels like everything is totally awesome and you're on your way to becoming an awesome singer, and then some days you can feel like you're banging your head against a brick wall. She is always thinking of ways to help you break through and undo your bad habits so don't give up once you hit a wall! She is very positive and will always push you to improve yourself while making sure you do not injure yourself. She offers deals if you happen to buy sets of lessons vs. just 1.

My girlfriend and I just got back from our first lesson and we felt that it was extremely helpful. The things that Max taught us seemed incredibly useful under the right circumstances and we felt that we came away with something valuable. We set up another month worth of lessons with Max and we're extremely excited to learn more about defending ourselves. Additionally, Max was very quick to respond to my original inquiry and a pleasure to work with on the business side of things.

Sedat is an excellent teacher for my 10 year old. He has lots of patience and knows how to teach kids. He is able to help with easier ways to teach chords and makes the class enjoyable. I am a beginner and didn't know much about playing Guitar and Music theory. She is a great teacher, she always has a way to make me understand the critical aspects. Within no time Judy has brought me to a level where I could read music and play basic chords and make transitions. Playing guitar is a combination of the lessons you get from your guitar teacher and practicing a lot, judy has been really good in making me focus on the right aspects of guitar playing. So far everything has been great. Looking forward to more great lessons.

Not only is Elizabeth knowledgeable, she is patient, thoughtful and considerate of her students. She puts nervous singers at ease while encouraging them to explore their full potential. We are most fortunate to have Elizabeth as Katia's singing instructor as our daughter really looks forward to her weekly lessons.

We started with Dan a couple months ago, he is teaching my 8yo daughter guitar. She had no previous experience with guitar or music. It has always be so hard to have her stick to anything but this time she is always looking forward to her next lesson. If you will ask her what she thinks of Dan, she would say:"He is amazing" Dan is a professional, with a great personality and a huge amount of patience to teach my very distracted child. She is learning! Dan's lessons are structured and adapted to her. I would highly recommend Dan to anyone.

I have been taking voice lessons with Marla Volovna for 7 months now. In this short time I have progressed faster than I ever had before, in vocal technique as well as in interpretation and musicianship. Marla is very demanding, very honest and very encouraging… a killer combo for success. And Marla’s commitment to her students’ progress really extends beyond the weekly lesson, with regular communication of tips to improve technique, interpretation, links to performances, documentaries, archives, etc… I highly recommend Volovna Vocal Studio.

Mark has been teaching our daughter for three years. She was only 10 years old when she started and was full of questions and hopes of instant mastery. Mark was really patient, answering her questions and building success into each week to sustain her morale while she learned that it doesn't happen overnight. While she is still on the road to mastery, she has grown a trust in Mark to let him set the pace. He reciprocates by encouraging her to practice and influence the pace. I also enjoy that Mark has the flexibility to work with our daughter. His approach allows her to pick some song she likes. He can listen to the song and adapt it into a relevant lesson or teach her the chords and allow her to learn the song. This mixed with the variety of classics and Christian pop songs will make for a well-rounded skill set for our daughter. I have the opportunity each week to watch one of Mark's long time students play and am really impressed at his comfort and skill playing a variety of styles.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do I become CPR and first aid certified?

You can earn CPR training and receive first aid certification in a number of ways. Choose an online course to learn the materials remotely and then find a testing location to complete the certification process with an in-person demonstration of your knowledge and skills. Encourage your workplace to host a first aid and CPR training so employees can learn what to do in case of a workplace emergency and how to respond with lifesaving techniques. You may also be able to take a CPR or first aid class in your community. A basic CPR training may run four to five hours. After receiving CPR training, you’ll know how to respond if an adult or a child goes into cardiac arrest or stops breathing. You’ll learn how to use chest compressions to keep blood pumping to a person’s organs, which can keep them alive until an emergency responder can arrive. First aid and CPR training can also include education about how to use an automated external defibrillator (AED).

What is CPR training?

Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (better known as CPR) is a lifesaving manual technique that pumps oxygenated blood back into the body’s organs if someone’s heart or breathing has stopped. A variety of CPR training is available to community members, employees and healthcare providers. CPR training may last two to five hours or more, depending on the content and the target audience. During the training, students will learn how to recognize and respond to an emergency situation. There are different CPR techniques for adults and children, but with both you will learn how to determine whether the person is conscious before administering chest compression. During the training you’ll learn chest compression techniques for adults and different techniques for children between the ages of 1 and 8. Students learn how to properly administer chest compressions, when the technique is appropriate and when it is not, and how long you must perform rescue measures. Students also learn what an automatic external defibrillator (AED) is and how to use it if necessary to shock a patient before administering CPR chest compressions.

What does a Spanish tutor do?

The goal of a Spanish tutor is to help students improve their Spanish reading, writing, comprehension, and conversation skills. The tutor’s approaches may vary, depending on whether the instruction is individual or a group class. Many Spanish tutors practice immersion — meaning they will speak only Spanish with their pupils. For students with little to no Spanish experience, the Spanish tutor may use a mix of Spanish and English to accustom their students to speaking the language.

A Spanish tutor can offer a wide range of services to their students. For students currently enrolled in a Spanish class through their middle school or high school, a Spanish tutor can help them with homework and language practice, as well as expanding their understanding of their current school curriculum. For adults, Spanish tutors will have different approaches based on that student’s need. Academics and those seeking high-level professional development for their career will often have more intensive and targeted lessons, drills, and interactive speaking tests. For adults who wish to learn conversational Spanish for fun or for travel, lessons may revolve around learning commonly used phrases and practicing speaking in relaxed settings.

What is first aid training?

With first aid training, you may be able to help save a life. First aid training can teach people who are not medical professionals how to help a sick or injured person in crisis before an ambulance arrives on the scene. Most commonly, first aid training helps teach you how to administer cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and use automated external defibrillators (AEDs).

First aid training can teach you how to respond in a variety of emergency situations, including:

  • Asthma attack
  • Anaphylaxis
  • Burns
  • Choking
  • Diabetic emergencies
  • External bleeding
  • Heart attack
  • Poisoning
  • Neck, head or back injury
  • Stroke
  • Seizure

First aid training classes may be offered by professionals who are affiliated with the Red Cross, which offers online, in-person, and blended training classes. First aid classes are also often offered through local recreation centers, city services, schools, hospitals and private companies.

What can you do with a first aid certificate?

People with a first aid certificate are trained to respond quickly and appropriately in life-threatening situations. Although a first aid certificate alone isn’t enough to secure a job, it can make you more attractive to certain types of potential employers. When you have a first aid certificate, you’ve proved that you know how to administer cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), use an automated external defibrillator (AED), and handle emergency situations like choking, heavy bleeding, a heart attack or stroke, or anaphylaxis. Most parents prefer babysitters and lifeguards with first aid certification. Many professionals, especially those who work with children, are required to have first aid training, including teachers, coaches, counselors and therapists, firefighters, and social workers. In addition to adult and pediatric first aid plus CPR and AED courses, you can take first aid training specifically designed for babysitting and child care, for health care settings, and for swimming and water safety situations..
