Kevin impressed us with his willingness to work around our schedules and to patiently manage our young rescue dog. Our dog reacted to him better than others we interviewed so, in a sense, she chose Kevin. His rates are very competitive too. We hope this is the beginning of a long and successful relationship!

I don't even know where to begin when I talk about Stephen Perry and his remarkable abilities with dogs. He has been the answer to my prayers. My dog, Keeper, has been a huge problem for me because of his chronic separation anxiety. He wants only to be with me. His behavior when he is away from me has caused him to be rejected by kennels for daytime or overnight stays. I have felt "burdened" by this for the entire 3 years that I have owned him. I have talked to trainers and other dog professionals but no one has been able to help me. Then I was lucky enough to find Stephen. He miraculously and almost immediately transformed Keeper's negative experience of being away from me into something pleasurable and comfortable for Keeper. Stephen walks him once a week, and Keeper has stayed overnight in his home with his other dogs (both his own and dogs that are being boarding). These dogs function like a "pack" with Stephen at the head. The dogs love and trust him. I could see that clearly when I visited his home. When he is with dogs, Stephen is in control, no nonsense, calm, consistent, fair, and very kind. He loves dogs and they love him. I don't know if those who are reading this are familiar with Cesar Milan, the Dog Whisperer, but when I leave Keeper with Stephen, it's like leaving him with Cesar Milan. And by the way, Stephen's prices are very reasonable, although that is not at all important to me. I am motivated to hire Stephen only because of his remarkable abilities.

I am pleased that I selected Loving Paws when we went out of state for a week in July. Peggy did go above and beyond as others have said. She did a very thorough interview at our house in Martinez before we left. I felt we were leaving our 4 cats in good hands. Peggy texted me several times to let me know how things were going. She was willing to brush the cats (but we didn't know where the brush was). She brought over her boom box so they could have music 24/7. We also had her water our plants for an additional charge. She collected the mail as part of her pet care taking. She came once a day and scooped the boxes daily. During one extremely hot day, she came by twice at no extra charge. Loving Paws is not a cut rate operation. The cost was more than boarding our dog. But it was worth it to have peace of mind. Previous friends and other businesses were overwhelmed by our felines. One is a bully and one is quite elderly. They all came through just fine, as did the plants. A paws up to Loving Paws!

We highly recommend Kit Pogarsky's Doggy Doggy dog boarding and day care. We have an energetic dog who likes to be near his people, and a dog kennel just wasn't right for him. When we first contacted Kit, he responded promptly and answered all our questions, and suggested we drop by to introduce our dog a few days before we went away. It was a great suggestion, as Griffie was then familiar with Doggy Doggy and Kit when we dropped him off to go out of town. Griffin has now stayed at Doggy Doggy several times, and we are totally comfortable leaving him for stays of a few days or a week or more. We know that for a reasonable price, our dog is getting the attention and exercise he craves and needs, and also gets to chill out in a great space and yard in Alameda. Very happy to recommend Doggy Doggy, -Mavis and Nick Marble

YeePaw! has really made our transition to a new city a delight for my fur babies. Eliot, the owner, established a wonderful bond with our bulldog, Daisy, in a few short weeks. He also helped to care for our 16.5 year old Jack Russell while she was under hospice. Eliot has an uncanny ability to read and respond to animal behavior. He has taught Daisy how to play and relate to other dogs. I've hired several dog walkers/sitters over the last 15 years, and YeePaw! is undoubtedly the best pet care available in the Bay Area. I highly recommend anyone with dogs use YeePaw! for all of their pet care needs.

Susan is wonderful with animals. She is a highly trained professional who loves what she is doing. With her knowledge skills, humane society and fostering experience, she is able to care for pets with medical needs or who require a little extra attention. Her dog training skills are excellent and she can continue or help you enhance your dog's obedience training routine. I highly recommend her. She will provide a loving home away from home for your pet.

We hired Beth a few months ago to take our dogs on walks as we needed her services. Due to my recent fractured ankle, we have used Beth's dog walking and pet sitting services for 5-6 days per week. Beth is reliable, conscientious and punctual. She is very loving towards our two dogs as well as our cat. We trust her in our home when we are not home. We are very fortunate to have Beth's services and we wholeheartedly recommend her to anyone who is considering hiring her. You will rest at ease knowing your pets are well cared for when you are not home.

I am an owner of an extremely protective 160 pound St. Bernard. She has extreme issues with social interactions with people if they are not family. I was so fortunate to find Coune's Canines. Stacy was extremely brave on that first visit. My dog lunges at her many times and barked non stop. She came back! And we tried her entering the house with my dog in her cage. This went on for many weeks but finally a breakthrough my dog allowed her to pet her through the cage. Now Stacy is easily her good friend! She can walk her around the property play inside with her and when I tell my dog she is coming to visit she is very excited. I never thought I would find anyone that would work with my temperamental girl. But I would highly recommend Coyne's Canines. They care about your pet and treat them like their own.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does boarding a horse cost?

Finding the right horse boarding location is a big step in a horse owner’s life. This will be the place your horse will live and where you will visit multiple times per week or even daily. The cost of horse boarding will depend on the level of service you desire, the location of the stables, and the luxury level of the property. Here are some examples of average horse boarding costs:

  • Overnight stabling: $30 per horse per night.
  • Partial boarding (owner feeds and mucks): $220 per horse per month, with a three-month commitment.
    • Administration of oral medication: $10 per dose.
    • Bandaging: $20 per event, plus cost of materials.
    • Trailering to vet if owner is unable: $25, plus $25 per hour to wait with horse.
  • Basic full boarding: $325-$350 per month per horse. Includes twice daily hay and daily stall cleaning.
    • Horse training: $20 per session.
    • Pasture turn out: $20 per session.
    • Blanketing: $1 per day/$30 per month.
    • Vet or farrier hold: $20. This means haltering the horse and standing with it as it receives treatment or shoeing.

Where can I board my horse?

You can board your horse at any barn or stable that provides horse boarding services. To find horse boarding near you, read reviews of area locations and speak with equestrian friends to find one with a solid reputation. Ideally, the location will be within a reasonable drive from your home or office. This is especially important if you are paying for partial boarding services and are responsible for feeding your horse and cleaning its stall each day. You may choose your boarding barn or stables based on the services they provide. Some offer more extensive amenities — at an added price — that reduce the amount of work you need to do to keep your horse comfortable. Consider whether you want training, blanketing, exercise and other perks in addition to standard offerings like hay and stable mucking. Your stable may have temperament requirements and proof that your horse has the proper vaccinations required by your state. This protects both your horse and the other horses in the stable. Many states require that locations offering horse boarding services have stable licenses that are renewed each year. Always be sure to enter into a clearly written boarding contract that will cover your horse and belongings in case of accident, and remember our tips for smart hiring.

What is horse boarding?

Horse boarding is like rental housing for your horse. Horse boarding is helpful for people who don’t have the space or the resources to install and maintain a stable on their property. A horse can be housed in a barn with other horses and receive the care they need. Owners can visit their horse for riding, grooming, training, etc. Horse boarding services may vary based on the company and the price. Some horse boarders may offer short-term boarding of 24 hours to several nights for people passing through an area, while most offer boarding by the month for horses whose owners live in the area. There is partial- and full-service boarding, which indicates how much of the work of feeding the horse and cleaning the stall is the responsibility of the owner rather than the boarding barn. For an added fee, horse boarding can also include grooming services, riding and training, medication administration, and more.

To find the right boarding fit for you and your horse, make a list of your top priorities. These might include immediate access to riding trails, round-the-clock supervision, or a nearby or affiliated veterinarian. Always visit the site to learn exactly where your horse will be kept and whether the barn and grounds are in good condition. Read reviews, and always practice smart hiring. It’s also critical to sign the proper legal documents that protect both you and your horse, such as boarding agreements. Above all, make sure it seems like a place your horse will be comfortable between your visits.
