It got hot late last week and so on Saturday (04/29/17) I turned on my AC after the long rainy season and guess what my AC didn't want to function. the fan wasn't working and I tried youtube to see if I can figure it out myself and that didn't go no where. At this time decided I need to go with the pro. started my Yelp reviews and calling my friends. on of my friends mentioned to me about Thumbtack. I went into Thumbtack and requested a quote for my AC repair. I got quote from a dozen contractors from $0 to $72 diagnostic cost. Kevin from East Bay Heating & Air was one among them. Kevin is the owner of the East Bay Heating & Air services and employees a team of 7. I was trying to get someone to come take a look at it on Sunday knowing that the coming days are going to be super hot. Kevin was the only person who decided to come over and take a look at it on Sunday. Kevin was very professional, polite, respectful, communicative, and took the time to explain what is going on with my unit. He also took the time to check my Nest device, AHU, and heater to make sure there is no issue in any of the device. Kevin quickly diagnosed that the motor fan is busted and took picture of the model of the motor. As he was looking at this he also diagnosed for other problems, he identified the disconnect switch was also busted and was not doing its job of cutting power to the AC unit (a major safety issue). Kevin took note of that and turned off the breaker at the main control panel for safety reasons. Once the issue in hand was identified and action plan was established, I started discussing with Kevin options to replace the entire heating & AC unit in my home. he took his time to explain to me all the brands out there, SEER ratings, single stage to double stage etc. Kevin was not rushing or in all of this didn't attempt to sell me anything. no pressure which was great. I requested a quote for replacing the entire system and Kevin quickly assembled a quote and emailed me on the same day. He also promptly replied to all my queries, remember this is all happening on a Sunday. later on that day I decided not to proceed with the whole replacement project even though Kevin's estimate was reasonable since I just did other improvement projects at my home and didn't want undertake this project at this time. When I got back to Kevin on this he was professional and agreed with me that this is the right thing to do. Kevin reaffirmed that he his going to procure the fan motor part and the disconnect switch. Once getting the parts will be at my home on Monday and take care of this work order. On Monday morning he promptly followed up with a call at 10:00am and confirmed that I wanted the motor to be replaced before he bough the parts. At 12pm he was at my home making the repair and as he did it he also cleaned my AC unit. Installed the new disconnect switch and included a compressor saver kit as my AC unit was from 90s. Kevin work was of good quality, prompt, and professional with his service. I will be recommending him to my friends for sure.

I received 3 bids to do a difficult job-- remove my old gas furnace and install a heat pump and air circulator in the attic of my home. Rudy Herrera of HP Mechanical, who has 16 years experience as a licensed contractor did an excellent job. He and his helper were very professional, extremely knowledgeable (I asked a lot of questions), productive and friendly. Since his overhead is lower than other companies, he could offer the best value for his hard work. Rudy did a great job within a 2 1/2 day period. He was very responsive to my texts. The heat pump works beautifully cooling the house and heating the house. HP Mechanical's Rudy Herrera is my heating/cooling/ plumbing contractor now. He'll be back to put in the downstairs heat pump.

I purchased an older home that required significant work on one heating and air-conditioning system and the total replacement of another, as well as the replacement of all ducting due to asbestos issues. After comparing pricing and meeting the owners of several competing companies I decided to go with Home Team Services ... and I am very glad I did. I've worked with a lot of contractors in my day and this company proved itself to be exceptional in every detail. Home Team Services pricing was very reasonable and they actually delivered on time exactly as promised and they gave more than expected, not just once, but again and again. Beyond this, what really sets this company apart is the owner Israel and his teams extraordinary attention to detail and their complete professionalism in every aspect of their work.... if only every contractor I ever had to deal with was this good !

Dave and his team went way above and beyond anything I expected. “Normal” contractors have been hit or miss on this service. Dave and Heavenly stepped up and stayed after hours just setting up my service appointment for an emergency HVAC repair. I never write reviews, and have a strict standard when dealing with people. However, the service they provided compelled me to let everyone know what a great company this is, and how much they are willing to help.

I came to Carlos with what seemed like a straightforward problem. He solved it in the end, and in the process uncovered all sorts of problems that my previous HVAC contractor had left behind. He came out within 24 hours of my initial request to investigate and do a free estimate, and came back to do all of the repairs and improvements today: closing off two ducts that were just blowing into our crawlspace (!), rerouting existing ducts to shorten the distance air has to travel to our bedroom, replacing bent ducts with proper elbows, fixing the cover to the furnace (small work, but nice to reduce a leak), and tuning the dampers to make sure we have airflow to our bedroom. From the beginning, Carlos worked hard to figure out what was really going on with our ducts, and I'm super happy with the results. I can't recommend him more.

Replaced furnace/AC/duct. Mack is very responsive for commercial aspects, and pro-active to pull up the permit. Eduardo, the project manager is very straight forward, pleasant and competent. Marvin, the specialist of AC is nice and professional. The whole crew of 7, did a great job, worked well and fast, paid attention to details and cleaned after the work. Highly recommended. With furnace and condenser moved to attic, HVAC operation is so quiet now. Very happy about the whole experience.

Micah was awesome. The most punctual contractor I have met and was able to come during the sme day twice, once at 9 am and once at 9pm. Can you believe it? The project itself could have been finished faster, but the price is fixed, so that is ok. The project also involved wall repairing which Micah did well. Oh, also, he leaves things clean afterwards.

I hired CFI Construction to frame a new 501 sq ft building on our property to be used as a sewing studio. Today, they started and finished framing the walls, and enclosing the entire building with shear panels. Next week, when the trusses arrive, they are going to install them and install roof shearing. I learned of CFI two days ago on Thumbtack. Having observed their work today, I feel like the A team just fell out of the sky into my project. They are phenomenal in every respect. Their work, honesty, and work ethic are models for the construction industry. They have years of experience framing large projects, both residential and commercial. I was humbled that they chose to work on my project. They are not solely a framing company. They can build a building from start to finish, I just happened to hire them for framing. Having enjoyed today's experience, I'm going to use them for more phases of our project. Both the owner of the company (Steve) and one of his sons (Drew) were on site the entire day, as well as their crew of 5 framers. I wanted to write this review now, even though they still have trusses to install and the front porch to frame, because I want other users of Thumbtack to have the same benefit of a 1st class, licensed, professional construction company, as I did today. I strongly recommend that you seek out CFI Construction for your projects. They are the real deal. Thank you Steve and Drew.

Jeff was by far one of my favorite contractors in my lifetime of home ownership. He helped us replace our HVAC unit during a remodel and was very professional. He was on time, he was courteous, he paid attention to detail and even told us if there was one small thing that bothered him; he wouldn't leave until it was right to him, he was clean from start to finish on his job, and pricing was within our budget. He worked so well for us that we hired him again to replace our water heater. He came out the night it happened, assessed materials, came back the next day on time, and did the job to code (which it wasn't previously). He made sure we understood how to shut down in case of an emergency and he cleaned up before he left. I know I can count on him for any job I put him to as he won't take on what he can't do. 5 stars without a doubt. I wish I had photos to post but we sold that house or I would.

Ian pretty easily diagnosed the situation and provided and very simple and affordable solution. We had cool air running through the home in no time. He was very straight forward and provide lots of info on our system. I would not hesitate to each out to Mercury Heating and Air Cond. again for any of our HVAC issues. Thank again!!

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    Who fixes furnaces?

If your furnace needs to be repaired, you’ll want to find a qualified heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) repair technician. Each state has its own licensing requirements; some require all HVAC technicians to have an HVAC license, while others only require someone operating an HVAC service and installation company with employees to hold a contractor’s license. For example, in Alabama, the Alabama Board of Heating Air Conditioning, and Refrigeration Contractors regulates licensing, while in Kansas there is no state regulatory body and HVAC licensing can vary by region. For simple furnace repairs like changing out a filter, a trusted handyman can probably handle the job, but a trained professional should be hired for tasks like replacing a gas valve, installing a new inducer fan motor or other critical furnace repair jobs that involve dealing with gas leaks or other dangerous conditions. How often should you get your air ducts cleaned?

How often you should clean your air ducts depends on your situation. If you or someone in the home has asthma or is acutely allergic to certain airborne materials or pollen, regular duct cleaning may be helpful. The Environmental Protection Agency doesn’t have an official position on the necessity of air duct cleaning unless the ducts have been contaminated by rodents, insects or mold, or you are aware of particles blowing out through the vents. The EPA recommends you have your air ducts cleaned on an as-needed basis. The National Air Duct Cleaners Association (NADCA) suggests having air ducts cleaned every three to five years.

Be cautious with companies that offer “whole house air duct cleaning,” urges the NADCA. The company may be using unscrupulous tactics to upsell you once they get started. Before any work begins, always clarify in writing what the job entails and what the cost will be. To protect yourself against fraud, read customer reviews and verify that your HVAC cleaning service has applicable licenses and certifications.

    What is an HVAC system?

The letters in HVAC stand for heating, ventilation and air conditioning. An HVAC system enables you to regulate your home or building’s internal temperature (thermal control) for comfortable living and working. You can bring heat levels down in the summer and up in the winter, keeping your home or office livable year-round. HVAC systems can also help with humidity levels and regulate indoor air quality in a home or office. There are many types of HVAC systems and technologies available.

Many homes have a forced-air HVAC system. Both the heating and the central air conditioning units share a ductwork system where they either push in or pull out warm or cooled air. There are also heating and cooling systems that don’t require ductwork — such as ductless mini-splits — but work on the same principles of heat exchange. The national average to hire an HVAC specialist is $2,920-$3,670, with costs varying depending on the work you need done and the equipment you are installing.

Do you need to clean your air ducts?

Air duct cleaning is done by heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) professionals. The pros use industrial-strength, truck-mounted vacuums and powerful brushes and hoses to clean inside the metal ducts that make up your forced air heating and cooling system. The Environmental Protection Agency recommends duct cleaning if there is “substantial visible mold growth inside hard surface ducts, ducts that are infested with vermin such as rodents or insects, or ducts that are clogged with excessive amounts of dust and debris and/or particles are actually released into the home from your supply registers.”

You should also have air ducts cleaned after recent water contamination or water damage to prevent mold; after renovations or remodeling to ensure debris and dust didn’t settle in the vents and ducts; if you are having problems with allergies or asthma; or when you are moving into a newly purchased home, especially if the previous owners smoked or had pets. The National Air Duct Cleaners Association (NADCA) recommends getting your air ducts cleaned every three to five years, or every two to three years in regions where homeowners use their air conditioning and heater for many months of the year, while the EPA suggests homeowners have duct cleaning done as needed.

How many years does HVAC last?

The number of years an HVAC system lasts depend on the type and brand of components that make up your system. The lifespan of an air conditioner averages between 15 and 20 years. The life expectancy of a tankless water heater is approximately 20 years, while a storage water heater is closer to 10-15 years. Ducts may need replacing within 10-15 years. Your equipment will have a longer life if you have regular tuneups and maintenance to keep everything in good working order. If you’re having repair problems and your HVAC system is over 10 years old, it’s a good time to consider the costs and benefits of repairing vs. replacing. Energystar.gov provides the following tips to help you decide whether to repair or replace:

    • Your HVAC system needs frequent repairs and your energy bills are increasing.
    • Your cooling or heating equipment is less efficient.
    • Rooms in your home are too hot or too cold.
    • Your heat pump or air conditioner is more than 10 years old.
      • Replacing your system with an Energy Star-certified unit could save up to 20 percent on your heating and cooling bills.
    • Your furnace or boiler is more than 15 years old.
      • You may choose to replace your system with an Energy Star-certified furnace (which is 15 percent more efficient than a conventional furnace) or an Energy Star-certified boiler (which is 5 percent more efficient).
    • Your home has humidity problems.
    • Your home has excessive dust.
      • Leaky ducts can pull particles and air from attics, crawl spaces and basements and distribute them throughout your house. Sealing your ducts may be a solution.
    • Your heating or cooling system is noisy.
      • You could have an undersized duct system or a problem with the indoor coil of your cooling equipment.
    • Your score on the Home Energy Yardstick is below five.
      • That means your home energy use is above average and you're probably paying too much for your utilities.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
