I hired Jasper to build a custom storage bench for me, and a modern barn door. Jasper responded to my post and came by to see the space prior to giving me a quote. He took my ideas and made some suggestions, and drew me a plan of what the pieces would look like. He was also able to find wood that matched my existing wooden floors and mango wood furniture very well. The bench he built fits perfectly in my space and looks seamless. The barn door is very modern (just what I wanted) and looks fantastic in my room. He also kindly offered to come by in a month to ensure that there was no issues and adjust anything to my liking once I have had time to use the pieces. Overall turnaround from the time he responded to my Thumbtack post to delivery of items was less than 2 weeks.

My first project on Thumbtack and I was apprehensive and Mahya put all my concerns to rest. She understood my project, gave me feedback on maximizing my construction effort and most importantly was responsive and professional. I have another project planned for next year and Mahya will be my architect. Oh, before I forget, she has a strong network of equally qualified structural engineers and energy consultants. Working with her was an absolute pleasure. I HIGHLY recommend her.

Vahid drew a plan that I later took to the San Francisco city department of building inspection and from the first try, changes to the apartment that we were planning to remodel had been approved. That tells me that Vahid is an architect who knows exactly what he is doing. He has printed 4 copies of the plan even though San Francisco department of building inspection requires only 2 copies. All 4 copies have been included into a price. I am definitely his client if I ever will need architectural plans drawn again in the future.

Ben listened to my needs. He worked with me to draft a plan that was approved by the city with a few modifications to turn a single family home into a three unit condo building.

I hired Jeff to draw up official plans for our bathroom remodel. The plan was quite detailed and involved knocking down walls and adding windows. Jeff was able to quickly create drawings that would pass the planning department in San Francisco. In fact, he joined me to make sure the plans passed over the counter. The project ended up working out nicely as the plans were clear and my contractor could follow them.

Wen helped me to do an as-built drawing set for the house before remodeling and offered the design direction for room updates and furniture selection. We loved her design taste - it was very modern yet functional, and didn't break the bank! Wen was quick, thorough, and produced high quality drawing sets that were easy to read for me and the contractors.

Brigitte and her team did an amazing job with the transformed of our daughter’s small home. It went from dark and out dated to light and expiring! She was able to make the home look larger then it really is. With the right colors is became warm and inviting. Brigitte has an excellent eye for color. She has the ability to know what colors will work in your rooms and with the rest of the house. She and her team created the perfect ambiance. Everyone who visits the house comments on the wonderful transformation. Brigitte and her group are very talented individuals when it comes to making your space just the way you want it or better what you expected. We would recommend her if you are planning to remodel your home.

We hired Jennifer to help us with a kitchen and bath remodel, as well as space planning, lighting, paint, and furniture for the whole home. She really made an effort to understand what we were looking for and to make design suggestions that were elegant and fit our personal style. She was also able to suggest things that I would never have thought of, but that ended up being such a perfect fit in our home. She is incredibly patient and keeps working on things until they are perfect. Her pricing is super reasonable, and I think in the long run she has actually saved us money by passing on discounts and helping us find stuff within our budget. Our project is ongoing and I am so happy to have found her. Jennifer is an incredible designer and I give her my highest recommendation, without reservation.

I had a very good experience with Mary last year when she help me design a deck for my house. She is very punctual and put a lot of thought into the design to achieve the look that I was going for and the use for which it was intended. She was reasonably priced and I definitely think I got my money's worth. Also took care of getting the plans passed by the city which took a lot of my headache go away. I would definitely recommend to any one of my friends

Danny is a skilled professional who is dedicated to top quality design and construction. He designed an innovative solution to bringing light into our home using a combination of skylights and glass-flooring in our attic. He was meticulous in his research of different solutions, vendors and contractors, and even discovered old building plans for our home. Danny's artistic flare is also evident through his side projects, such as large home/office wood furnishings. I thoroughly recommend Bittiker Architecture to anyone seeking thoughtful, skilled and dedicated professionals.

When I first met Gregg through a mutual friend, I was a new and first time homeowner about to embark on a 54 square foot bathroom remodel (The house I bought was built in 1932 and still had the bathroom from that era.) that I foolishly thought I could accomplish myself. My engagement with Gregg started out as a series of floor plan ideas and evolved into the entire bathroom renovation. Gregg designed custom cabinetry for me, and he (and one of his associates) selected most of the fixtures and finishes as well. I thoroughly enjoyed the creative process with him, and there was opportunity to make some decisions based on a selection he had curated for me. Because the scope of the work that Gregg performed for me evolved, the engagement lasted about six months in total. I couldn't be happier with the finished product. The bathroom has been "in use" for about 18 months now, and it's still my favorite room in the house. Once I have enough in the bank, the next remodel I'd like to do is the kitchen. You can bet that Gregg will be at the top of the list!

I contacted Bolinger Design regarding previous owners non-permitted work on my house. Bruce went out of his way to ensure a complete set of plans were made, to include all previous changes since original build. Additionally Bruce worked with the planning and permits department to ensure the process went smoothly. Bruce went a step further and coordinated repairs and construction necessary to bring the house into compliance with the engineering firm of my choice. Bruce walked me through the process each step of the way, and answered questions completely when I was unsure of what was involved. I can't say enough how attentive Bruce was to my needs to complete this project that would have been overwhelming to me on my own. I would recommend Bolinger Design to anyone in need of an architect dealing with non-permitted work or otherwise.

Sorin kept in constant communication with us at all times which kept my wife and I very secure working with him. Unfortunately, we did not end up working with Sorin because we have decided how much or how little we should expand the house because our funding situation. However, I would totally recommend working with him as Sorin seemed very knowledgeable and helpful.

For the last three years my wife and I were looking for a way to get more SQFT out of our house, but kept running into extremely high costs of such design. After working with Nick of TradeCraft Architecture, we were able to come up with a great (and creative) design that worked for our family and budget. Nick was great to work with and made the design process ejoyable. Thanks for the great work Nick!

Bill was wonderful! He did drawings for my home in Santa Rosa . We needed" as built" and plans for our illegal garage conversion to ADU. When we decided it was not going to be worth it to jump through all the hoops that would be required, he did another set of drawings to put it back to the original garage. He is new to Santa Rosa which was lucky for me. The fires have made it almost impossible to find someone. I was insanely grateful to not only find somebody so professional and responsive but very nice to boot!

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    How do architects work?

Architects may work for an architecture or engineering firm, they may work for a government organization, they can work for a construction company, or they may be self-employed (freelance). The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics explains that architects spend a large amount of their working time in the home or company office: meeting with clients; creating reports and architectural drawings; and working with other architects and engineers. When not in an office, an architect is often at the construction site either as part of the development of plans or to ensure building progress is following the blueprint.

When a client interacts with an architect, it is typically to have them design drawings for the construction of a house or a building. If you are a client who has hired a large architecture firm, there may be a team of people working on your design. But if you are working with a freelance architect or a smaller firm, one person (or a small group) will take your concept and translate it into an architectural blueprint that a builder can use to construct a house. The plans will lay out everything from the depth of the foundation to the materials to use to the type of metal to be used in the reinforcement. Once the plans have been created and handed off to the builder, the architect may remain on the project — depending on budget — and oversee progress.

How do architects charge for their services?

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, the median salary of an architect in 2016 was $76,930. This range included architects with every type of company as well as self-employed architects. Depending on the architect and whether they’re with a firm or independent, they may charge per hour or by the square foot, or they may charge a percentage of the total budget for a construction project. An hourly rate is typically used for smaller projects such as providing consultation, helping clients hone their concept before the design process begins, or drafting documents and plans. If an architect is working on an hourly basis on a larger project, there will usually be an agreed-upon cap on the number of hours they will work. For larger projects, such as new construction or total overhaul remodels, architects may charge a percentage of the total construction costs. The architect will usually set the percentage you will pay after the total cost of construction has been accounted for. Percentages can range within a firm depending on the extent of the services they’re providing. For example, a lower percentage of the total construction costs may include drafting and minimal consultation and guidance along the way, while a higher percentage could include on-site project management services with every detail attended to. Architects may also charge by the square footage of the project. The rate per square foot can vary depending on the individual’s training, the services they are providing, the complexity of the project, and other factors — such as obtaining permits. The national average cost to hire an architect is between $1,690 and $2,500.
