Jerry was great! He was quick to respond to my somewhat last minute request (5 days prior to the move), he arrived on time, and was definitely a professional. Jerry and my boyfriend unloaded the whole 15' moving truck and put it in my new apt. in an hour. My boyfriend stopped about half way to start assembling the bed so we could bring in the other pieces needed, and Jerry did the rest mostly by himself with dollies. We had rented dollies from Uhaul with our truck, but Jerry also brought his own dolly to help. He was very careful with our wood furniture and not to hit walls or damage the wood floors, all while being very speedy. Jerry was also a really nice guy and great to chat with as we moved. I would highly recommend Jerry to anyone looking to move! I will definitely be calling him first next time we move. Great price, quality work, great guy. Thanks Jerry!

This is my third time using Larro's moving services. The first was to move boxed items from my house in SF (Glen Park) to a secure storage facility in south SF. The second was to move 10" x 20" worth of stacked boxes, cabinets, couches, bookshelves, BBQs, TVs and computers, etc. from the storage facility to Marin. The third job was packing and boxing my remaining items at home (beds, dressers, garage items, critical kitchen equipment) and relocating those to our new place in Marin. During each job, his crew of friendly, cheerful guys arrived on time, then worked quickly and carefully to complete the job as efficiently and pleasantly as possibility. They even stayed 20 minutes after stopping the clock to help assemble my bed. Given they make a living where they are paid by the minute, this truly was going above and beyond. Price is very fair- hourly for 3 guys, plus a fixed day fee for a huge truck. Today they actually brought 2 trucks and 4 guys, but charged me only for 1 truck and 3 guys. Very much appreciated! So yes, I recommend them, for sure, for any Bay Area moving jobs.

I had a great experience with Edgar and his crew. To begin with, Edgar was super responsive, answering all my questions promptly. I had to deal with two finnicky HOAs while moving, and they worked hard to ensure that the HOAs were happy during the move. The move itself was so easy with these guys. It took 4 hours (1 of those hours was driving time) to move a large one bedroom apt worth of things, and the resulting cost was a steal. They handled all the items very well, including prickly cacti, a bulky desk, and two of the heaviest drawers I've ever seen. While moving one of our bookshelves, they noticed a crack in the one of the legs -- it was pre-existing, but Edgar pointed it out and said if they had caused it, he would take care of the cost. Overall, I would highly recommend this team. Thanks guys!

If I could give Albion Moving 10 stars, I would. They are by far the best movers we've used so far, and we plan on using them in the future as well. They came on time, and got straight into moving our furniture. We have some pretty heavy pieces and all of them got moved without any fuss. Most of our upholstered furniture is also white, making it more challenging to move. We got all furniture delivered to our new home, spotless, and without any dings or other structural damage. Two thumbs up for Albion Moving!

Anthony and Jose arrived on time and got to work right away. Loading the truck took a little more than 2 hours and we were off to the new place. Scheduling a move on a Thursday proved to work best for navigating parking for such a large vehicle in a residential area. Offloading the truck took less than an hour, total bill was less than I paid some other guys two years ago to move into the old place. Highly recommend them. Thank you!

Drew, Jimmy and Penny did an excellent job moving my house. They took very good care of furnitures as well as walls and doors. There were some scheduling conflicts but it all worked out eventually. I would advice you to pick earlier schedule than later in the day, meaning second appointment puts you at risk of first job taking time and more effort for the boys leaving you at risk.

The crews came to my house showed great professionalism. They carefully handled our furniture and other bulky items from a large electric piano to garden patio set. Only thing I didn't like was some communication gap b/w their manager and myself. I initially asked if it's possible to take shoes off so that crews don't bring any dirt into our house. He practically declined for safety reason, I would understand. In exchange, he offered to bring many pads so that their main paths will be covered with it. Also, he mentioned that they start at 9:30 am. On the moving day, the crews arrived before 9 am because their manager said starting time is 9 am. Also, they didn't bring any pads for the floor. They said their manager didn't mention anything about it. These were very disappointing. Again, the crews worked hard and did jobs well done. The other thing is how they count the hours. It's somewhat weird that adding the doubled driving time on top of the total duration time. The total duration already includes driving time. If the driving time should double, then adding portion should be just another driving time, and it shouldn't add double since it makes a tripled time in the end. Also, the appointment was 9:30 am, but they wanted to count from 8:30 am because they started at that time. That didn't make sense, and I asked I don't understand, we settled to charge from 9 am instead. I don't know if these are a standard practice of moving industry, but I wish they could explain more clearly beforehand (the estimate didn't say anything about those details.)

Needed a cat door put in my wall to outside of house and just moving in my tools where packed. Got hold of Mike and he came out the next day. I showed him what I wanted and he did the job in an hour and a half. I'm really happy (no more cat box smell) and so are my wife and daughter. Thanks again Mike. Will call you again if I need anything else I don't have time or knowledge for a project.

The team at Wally's was very responsive (jumped on my job with less than 6hrs notice) and tactical about moving my apartment. They took the time to wrap, and protect, all of my belongings before moving them and came well prepared with extra boxes/blankets. Amazing experience. Would use again and am referring friends! Note, they do have a minimum charge.

I had a small moving project that needed to be coordinated like a Swiss watch movement: a very nice antique bookcase (that I just had refinished) and was transporting myself via a uhaul truck on a Friday morning to a destination some 70 miles away, had to be carefully unloaded and moved. More, I also had to get the displaced furniture moved to the garage (a small entertainment unit and small wooden book case) AND get capable people to do it with basically one day’s notice! The pressure was on! I literally posted my request on Thursday at 3:49 am (couldn’t sleep!). Elite Power Washing came to my rescue! They were the first to respond with a very reasonable quote, agreed to an 8:30 am appointment on Friday, and reassured me that they were up for the task. Mike and Juan arrived promptly, took direction on my suggestions on how to transport the piece (after I had watched how my furniture refinisher and his cohort had moved it), and placed it gently in the right spot. Mike and Juan are calm, courteous, considerate, and caring. They are professional, punctual, and take pride in what they do. I will definitely add them to my roster of professionals that I can count on, and will contact them for future jobs. I will assess my gutters and power washing needs as well... Happy and Relieved! Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do moving companies do?

Moving companies provide a range of services to help you physically move out of one residence and move into a new place. But moving companies can do so much more than just haul your belongings across town in a truck. The national average for moving company prices ($250-$350 per hour) reflects the range of services provided. Here are examples of all the ways moving companies can help:

  • Packing: Moving companies can pack your belongings for you. They typically charge a flat rate for both the box and the labor to pack the box. The more time-consuming the belongings are to pack, the higher the cost per box. For example, books could be $5 per box, linens $10 per box, and fine china and glassware $18 per box.
  • Specialty moving: Safely move a baby grand piano, a oversize aquarium, or other specialty items with the help of pro movers.
  • Storage: Many moving companies can store your belongings while you wait for a new home to be remodeled or closing of your new home to be finalized. If you’re moving long-distance, they often provide short-term storage free for a specific length of time, and a set rate after that (such as $60 per square cubic foot of storage space used).
  • Long-distance moves: No need to rent a trailer and move your things; a long-distance moving company can haul your belongings across the country for you. Typically they charge by the cubic foot for moves, with prices based on your destination.
  • Unpacking: Moving companies can even unpack your belongings for you after they have moved them. This is not as common, and will definitely increase the price, but can be helpful if you’re not able to tackle this task yourself.

How much does a moving company charge per hour?

When you’re ready to make a major move, it’s time to research moving companies’ prices. A moving company may charge on average anywhere between $25 and $100 per hour, per worker, for moving services. The price will vary with regional labor rates, local cost to do business, and the level of service the movers are providing. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a moving company is $250-$350 per hour. This price includes a range of pricing, from all-in service with four or more movers on site to standard hourly rates for one or two movers. Other factors that affect moving companies’ prices are packing, stairs (or elevators), and distance. For a full-service move, you pay movers to pack your belongings for you. You may pay for the cost of the moving boxes and an hourly rate per worker, and there may be additional charges for packing fragile items. Stairs will also add to your moving prices. Lifting and carrying boxes and furniture up and down stairs takes more time and creates more physical labor for the workers. Moving companies may charge flat rates for flights of stairs, such as $50-$70 per flight. A moving company may also charge a one-time fee for moving things via elevator, such as $75-$100. If parking is not accessible in front of your home or apartment building, there may also be an additional fee for the added distance to carry your belongings to the truck.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

How much does it cost to move a one-bedroom apartment across the country?

Professional movers can handle the hard work of moving your one-bedroom apartment across the country for you. You can determine what your move will cost by learning the rate your movers charge per cubic foot and how they factor distance into the total cost. Cross-country movers typically charge based on your belongings rather than apartment size because that determines how much work they will have to do. For example, a studio apartment that is crammed full of things will take more work and moving truck space than the contents of a three-bedroom apartment with very little furniture.

Cross-country movers may also have varying rates, depending on where in the country you are moving. For example, a company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. A one-bedroom apartment costs approximately $1,500 to move across the country.

How much does it cost to move across the country?

The national average cost for hiring cross-country movers is $1,490-$2,220. A number of factors can affect the cost. One factor is the distance you want to move. For example, an East Coast-based moving company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. Another factor is how many belongings you have. Most cross-country movers charge by the cubic foot.

The type of move you want is another consideration in cost. You can have your belongings moved exclusively and delivered on a set day, or you can opt for a consolidated move, which is less expensive. In a consolidated move your belongings are stored and transported with the goods of other customers who are moving to your general vicinity during the same general time frame as you. Your belongings should arrive within a one- to two-week window, rather than on a set day. If you want the cross-country movers to pack your belongings for you, the cost will also increase.
