John Linneball helped me with SAT tutoring, especially in the math sections. The sessions took place at my house every week, but if ever there was a problem, communication was made easy through email. He really helped me and we clocked in many hours of math exercises. Not to mention, he gave me suggestions on what I should work on during my alone time.

John is an extremely conscientious, thoughtful, and helpful LSAT tutor. I turned to John after months of self-study (and putting off the LSAT again and again because I didn't feel ready). He helped me wrap my head around some of the trickier LR problems and also had a great way to think about LG that made something just click. The amount of work John put in prepping for our tutoring sessions really blew me away. He came to each session prepared, had plenty of materials to suggest, and had a clear plan for each session. Furthermore, he's extremely accessible over email and text. If I had a tough practice section and felt panicked or if I had any questions around strategies or approach, I knew I could email John and he'd answer my questions promptly. John really cares about his students and their successes and I'd highly recommend him as an LSAT tutor!

We worked with Ahmed to help with my son's SAT math and we're very happy with Ahmed's work. Ahmed was able to identify my son's weak subjects and explain math concept very well. We can see more tutoring sessions with Ahmed for my son's future math classes and tests.

I initially booked 2 tutoring sessions. The whole tutoring experience was great! The tutor was very experienced (knew the SAT exam details) and had my progress stats ready (especially my weakest subjects!) when we started each session. Tutor was so well prepared, I thought he's been tutoring me for a while. After a couple of sessions, I saw a jump in my estimated scores of around 150 points, which is a lot for just 2 sessions. I'll definitely will be continuing with my Scorebeyond tutor. I strongly recommend the Scorebeyond tutoring services along with the SAT Up app to help anyone studying for the SAT and trying to ace it.

Our family has worked with One-to-One Tutoring for over three years in providing tutoring for my high-school daughter in mathematics, and for a short period, in chemistry. We have worked with the same math tutor which has proven to be an excellent relationship that has served my child well. The administration services have also been excellent, with prompt and accurate billing. If our tutor needs to be away for vacations or other reasons, we are always offered a substitute so that coverage is not missed. I appreciate the flexibility, accessibility and high caliber of professional people involved in this agency.

It has been four years since I have been in school. I jumped back where I left off Precal and thanks to Pio I am doing a lot better in class and not struggling. He is great to work with. He explains the problem very thoroughly and makes it easy to understand. I went from fours of homework to 1 hour. Highly recommend.

Hola!!! I absolutely love Karen. She tutored me for 8 months in Spanish and boy did I relearn a ton. I had taken Spanish for over 10 years but you know what they say when you dont use it you lose it. She was always prepared for our lesson and worked at my pace to ensure I was grasping the language..Our lessons were 60 minutes bi-weekly sessions. Unfortunately I had to move due to a new job but if not I would still be working with Karen!

    About

I am aware that some students have severe math anxiety which makes it difficult for them to learn. I have 15 years experience in how to circumvent that problem. I enjoy seeing the "light" go on when a student understands.

I offer learn-to-code and basic math services to kids ages 6-12. I teach using a robot named Cozmo, because kids love him. I love teaching kids, it's fun! It's very rewarding.

    About

Compare us against one of the mass marketed national tutoring chains and you'll discover why our approach is better: 1) We utilize ONLY state-certified teachers as tutors. Your tutor will be a degreed educator with classroom teaching experience. We will not send you a college student or other untrained professional. 2) We provide a customized tutoring experience. Our private tutoring lessons are not mass produced. Instead, your tutor will customize a plan of action to reflect your child's goals and learning style. 3) We offer straight-forward pricing. You set the pace, and you simply pay your tutor's reasonable hourly rate. The thing I love the most is the ability to offer a thoughtful and differentiated service, where the student's needs and hopes guide our approach rather than a bloated and inflexible corporate culture.

    About

Worried about your upcoming SAT subject I or II math exam? Don't be. Unlike the verbal and writing sections, the math section features similar questions every year. By walking through practice problems together, I'll teach you how to answer the tough questions in less time. I'm an Ivy League educated Math tutor, who studied and tutored economics in college. We'll make studying fun and as a result, your score will improve. I recommend 45 to 90 minute session.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you study for the SAT?

Your SAT prep strategy can mean the difference between a great score and a mediocre score, as well as the difference between being accepted to or rejected by your school of choice. The Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT) is a college entrance exam that measures a student’s knowledge and understanding of what they have learned up to this point in school and what they need to succeed in college. In addition to arming students with the knowledge they need to excel in the math, reading and writing components of the test, SAT prep can help improve scores by teaching students crucial strategies for taking the test itself. Professional SAT prep tutors can work with students one-on-one or in group sessions. Typically, tutors recommend that students who are comfortable and caught up with their regular schooling begin SAT prep at least three months before the test. If you’re targeting an elite school, six months before the test is a good time to begin. Students who are behind in school are advised to start early to ensure they’re caught up and feeling confident in all the relevant subjects. Suggestions for long-term SAT prep include taking challenging high school courses, completing all homework assignments, preparing for class tests and quizzes, and participating in class by asking and answering questions. There are free SAT prep training tools online; for those who’d like a one-on-one tutor to take them to the next level, the national average rate is $70 per hour.

When should you start preparing for the SAT?

It’s never too early to start preparing for college entrance exams, but professional tutors recommend a baseline of at least three months before the test. The Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT) is the gold standard for college admissions, and SAT prep is important for doing well. Your child’s SAT scores will have a major effect on which colleges send acceptance letters. Professional tutors can work with your kids to coach them on how to take the SAT, as well as studying the actual academic content. Doing well on the SAT is as much about knowing the right test-taking strategies as about having a firm grasp of the subject matter.

To understand your student’s readiness for the SAT, they can take the pre-SAT (PSAT) starting in their sophomore year. SAT prep can be structured around the student’s PSAT scores, so tutors can address any challenges and weak subject areas. If your child has their sights set on an Ivy League or elite school, SAT prep with a tutor or study program should start at least six months before the test. Vocabulary is a key element of the student’s SAT preparation and success. The national average rate for SAT prep tutoring is $70 per hour.

What is in the SAT test?

As your child is preparing for the SAT, it’s helpful to know the specifics of the test. The Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT) is made up of three main categories and one optional essay. Students have a total of three hours to take the test, with an additional 50 minutes for the optional essay. In total, there are 154 questions. During SAT prep, it’s helpful to take timed practice exams to understand how you’ll do during the actual test. Here is a brief overview of each of the four categories:

    • Reading: 65 minutes with 52 questions. The Reading test measures command of evidence, words in context, analysis in history and social studies, and analysis in science.
    • Writing and Language: 35 minutes with 44 questions. The Writing and Language test covers the same topics as Reading, as well as expression of ideas and standard English conventions.
    • Math: 80 minutes with 58 questions. The Math test looks at the student’s understanding of algebra, problem-solving and data analysis, and advanced math in the context of fluency, conceptual understanding, and applications.
    • Essay (optional): 50 minutes with 1 essay. The essay will demonstrate the student’s competency with writing, analysis and reading.
