"I have a Ph.D. in Physics and a Bachelors degree in Mathematics from the University of Texas at Austin, and am intimately familiar with the fundamental concepts of Mathematics and Physics and how they apply to the real world. While at The Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore Maryland I taught Physics and constructed detectors that were used at MIT and The Princeton Plasma Physics Lab. I taught several graduate students. I made an effort to learn as much as possible from the masters at Hopkins, MIT and Princeton. Learning from a master helps you understand the tools, concepts and tricks that are essential for that discipline. You discover that it is necessary to be confused and that confusion ultimately leads to a higher dimension of enlightenment. Then you start the transition from student to master yourself. It begins with Mathematics. Seven years ago I retired from a research scientist position in the Engineering Dept at UC Berkeley. While at UC Berkeley I expanded my knowledge of mathematics and physics into engineering/computer science concepts and worked closely with the students. It was a joy to teach and to learn from the students. This experience has given me the unique opportunity to interact with young minds on engineering and math concepts and how they apply to reality. I have a love for mathematics and physics that developed when I was young, and have a passion for teaching. Mathematics is an art form that is the basis of all disciplines. The physical significance of mathematical equations defines the fundamental theoretical principles of all of the sciences as well as life itself. It is the poetry of the universe. Mathematical symmetry gives you the conservation laws. One of the most important is the conservation of energy law. You can start seeing the basic symmetries in the equations of algebra, geometry and calculus in middle school and high school."

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good math tutor?

Math home tutors are available for any age student, from elementary school to postgraduate studies. Rates will vary based on the tutor’s background, education and experience. To find a good math tutor, first determine your learning goals. Do you need help understanding and completing homework assignments? Are you preparing for the math portion of a standardized test? Next, read reviews from current and former students. Find someone with proven success helping students achieve their goals. If you want help on an ongoing basis, decide what your budget is and identify the tutors who fall within your range. Ask if there are additional fees for travel, as some home math tutors include travel costs in their rates and others charge extra. Ask about session length and the tutor’s teaching style, and whether they also offer online sessions or group sessions. Finally, schedule a single session with each of the math tutors you think are best to see who is the best fit.

The cost for math tutors varies based on the type of math, the expertise and experience of the tutor, and geographic location. Pricing may range between $40 and $100 per hour, depending on the math subject. As a rule, the more complex the subject matter, the more the math tutor will charge for the lessons.
