I am a mother of 3 young adults and teacher. After running a 5K event, I noticed my knee swelled significantly. One month later I was diagnosed with Kneecap Bursitis. My doctor gave me standard advice and said to rest, ice, compress and elevate my knee, use a specific strengthening exercise routine, and gave me a knee compression sock to wear while running. The doctor did not want to drain my knee and said it would likely swell up again. The doctor told me to avoid kneeling on my knee because it caused me pain and bruising. This is quite difficult for me since I teach elementary age children and often kneel on the rug with them. After over a month of following these recommendations I had no improvement. It was negatively affecting my usual stressful work routines. I was worried I would not be able to participate in further running events for which I had pre-registered. I was also worried my knee would cause me problems for a once-in-a-life-time international trip I have been planning for a year. After only the first week of 2 treatments working with Alma, she reviewed my background, general health, body type, and diet. She listened attentively and showed me informational charts about what foods are healing and appropriate for my body type. She provided acupuncture for my symptoms within a clean and comfortable environment, including relaxation with soft therapeutic music and self-healing visualization. On the same day of my first treatment, I left feeling energized, refreshed, and on my way to a healthier future. My next day teaching at school, I felt more energy than I had had in years. My knee has also felt improved and stronger ever since. Alma is a well experienced expert in her field of acupuncture, and as an herbalist and nutritionist. She is intensely thoughtful while following her patients' background and listens carefully to the whole person she is treating. I so appreciated Alma's warm welcome to her comfortable healing space. What also stood out most for me is the informational texts she provided describing appropriate foods for individualized self-care and well being. I would highly recommend Alma to my own family members or friends with muscle pain, joint pain, or sport or job related conditions. If you have a sport or job related condition, Alma can help you with your pain, improve your diet and guide you toward a healthier and enlightened future. Thank you Alma, for making such a positive change in my future health! Rosemary Sage, 58 yrs. Educational Specialist, LAUSD Culver City, CA

Jennifer is, without any doubt or hesitation, the most effective nutritionist I have ever worked with. I have worked with many other doctors and nutrition specialists and Jennifer is far and away the best - by a landslide. Jennifer just gets it. Far too often I have been sent on wild goose-chases by doctors and nutrition "Gurus" and been advised to waste time and money on supplements, treatments, drinks, powders etc... Jennifer has never wasted my time or proscribed a treatment that has not worked. Perfect 10 for Jennifer!! Best in the biz!

I am a freelancer with a hectic schedule. I want to be healthy though and finding Kristin was life changing. I'm usually against weight loss pills, but Signal Weight Loss is in a league of its own. These will not give you the jitters like every other weight loss pill on the market. What they will do is suppress your appetite and help you eat healthier. Finding a nutritionist and weight loss coach can be a discouraging experience but with Kristin it was like catching up with an old friend. She has a delightful personality that makes shopping for healthy items a fun experience. It's obvious that she loves what she does and wants to help others achieve a healthy lifestyle. I have not weighed myself yet, but I can already tell that my clothes fit much better. I highly recommend Kristin and Signal Weight Loss!

Before I started working with Beth, I felt like I had done everything I knew how to do to get my health, weight, and fitness where I wanted it to be. I'd waded through all of the conflicting information out there and done my best with it. I had counted my calories, exercised, avoided processed foods when I could, and while I made some decent progress I could never seem to get past a certain point before I'd get completely derailed and have to start over again. It seemed like everything I tried was unpleasant and unsustainable. I was clearly missing something and that's when I considered seeing a nutritionist. I heard about Beth's workshop "Cravings Decoded" from a friend, and from that presentation I was able to see that Beth didn't have a "program" she was selling, or a template system. What she had to offer was foundational nutrition knowledge that was grounded in facts, fad-free, and made a lot more sense than the factoids and tips I'd read in articles or gimicky diet publications. After a consultation I decided to sign up for her three month program, and it has been one of the best things I've done for myself. When I sum up what I learned with Beth, it was like starting over and being re-taught how to eat. I gained a true understanding of what you are doing to yourself, good and bad, when deciding what foods to eat. I can read food like a language, understanding the varied contexts, and can see through deceptive marketing with ease. I have new and better tools for dealing with temptation, I have the power of forgiveness for lapses so they do not become derailments, and what's more I have gained a true liking and appreciation for food that I once would have considered a chore to eat. Beth's process is a gradual one that both respects and challenges what you like and don't like. One small change at a time, many which seem easy but for the harder ones you have a great coach who really puts herself forward to get you through those hurdles. She also set me right on what amount and types of exercise I needed to incorporate into my routine to reach my fitness goals. The results from everything have been wonderful- I hit my weight goal, am on a straight tangent to my ultimate fitness goals, and all of the changes I worked for now feel normal and natural. In the past when I'd fall off of a routine I was trying, it would take a monumental effort to get back to it. I don't have that problem any more, because if for some reason (like the holidays) I eat unhealthy or if challenges with my schedule throw off my fitness routines, I revert back to it quickly because it's what's normal, and what feels right. I feel great in every aspect, I have changed the things I wanted to but didn't know how. I just needed someone to show me how, and that person was Beth.

I recently had my 1st heart attack (which caught me by surprised). I was told by my doctor that I needed to change my eating habits. I had no idea where to start. I was overwhelmed and desperately needed help. Moran, who is a culinary nutritionist (chef & registered dietitian) set me on the right path. She created a detailed meal plan with all the nutrients my body needs along with recipes to help with my new menu. What was great is that Moran also taught me how to cook these delicious meals. I never knew it was that easy. My HbA1c is already significantly lowered and I've reached my weight goal. Moran is very good at what she does. She is an expert at assessing the situation and creating a doable plan. Her excellent knowledge will help you achieve optimal results . I am more than pleased with what she has helped me accomplish. I will forever be grateful.

I was looking for a nutritionist and April Mcnally at The Nutrition Fix is the only one who got back to me. I guess it was my lucky day! She contacted me right away and we set up an appointment. I really did not know what to expect but was a bit surprised to find out that everything was based around Herbalife. I was really looking for guidance, education and accountability to help with my weight loss and to help me make long term changes. I got so much more out of it. I am down about 20 lbs now and I love the program she has me set up on. She is very motivational and I've learned alot... and I knew alot going in so that is even more impressive. If you ever need a weight loss or nutrition coach for anything... she's your gal!

Amy Jo was wonderful. I needed a nutritionist to talk with my daughter about the importance of heating healthy and to make a custom meal plan for my daughter's needs. She did both and connected so well with my daughter that we will are planning to have a few more one-on-one sessions with her for some cooking and fitness training.

                Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does a nutritionist cost?

A nutritionist provides expertise and guidance to help clients with all diet-related health matters, including losing weight, gaining muscle, improving their sports performance, and managing diabetes or high cholesterol. Nutritionists can help people learn to follow special diets in a healthy way, such as becoming vegetarian or vegan or developing a low-sodium or gluten-free eating plan. The average national cost of a nutritionist is $60 to $100. Nutritionists often require an initial consultation with a new client, during which they’ll take a medical history, assess the client’s nutritional needs, and determine the best course of action; this first meeting usually averages $100-$120 for a 45-minute to 90-minute consultation. Subsequent nutritional counseling sessions generally cost less, ranging from an average of $45 for a half-hour session to $60-$90 for a one-hour session. Like many professional service providers, nutritionists may offer discounts through package pricing. For instance, a one-month package with two sessions and email support costs an average of $190; a three-month package with three sessions and email support costs an average of $360; and a six-month package with six sessions and email support costs an average of $540.

Are nutritionists covered by health insurance?

Nutrition counseling can be a critical component of good health care, especially for people recently diagnosed with diabetes or high cholesterol who need to adhere to a specific diet. People also meet with nutritionists for help developing a healthy vegetarian or vegan diet, developing an eating plan to lose weight or gain muscle, or improving their sports performance by changing their diet. Nutritionists may be covered by health insurance depending on your reason for meeting with them. Nutrition counseling is more likely to be covered if it is part of a doctor-prescribed treatment for a particular medical condition, such as diabetes, obesity, high blood pressure or coronary heart disease. For example, Medicare covers medical nutrition therapy services only for people diagnosed with diabetes or kidney disease, as long as they get a referral from their doctor. Also, insurance providers more often cover nutrition visits if the patient has been referred to a registered dietitian within the carrier’s network of providers. Insurance plans vary greatly, so research your benefits before visiting a nutritionist.
