Tom is great. Very happy I found him. I did work on our bathroom renovation, including: vanity install (very tricky IKEA cabinet that other handymen couldn't handle), plumbing, electrical, patching & paint, window install, and stucco repair. I immediately extended him to do some work on our front and back doors. All great. And now, I've hired him again to build a fence and gate for us in the front yard. I will be calling him again in the future, and I encourage anyone reading this to do the same!

I was looking for a handyman for the longest time. I had hired others after the work was done someone had to re-fix what was done wrong. How I know this in all my past years I have hired Handymen to do work around my house. I have seen a lot of shady and shoddy workmanship from others. I contacted John thru Thumbtack to work on my house which I was extremely pleased with his work. No one and I mean no one can compare to John. From the first moment I saw John I knew this man has great knowledge. His persona his intelligence to details, his well spoken well versed. I have never seen anyone like him before. I had John repair my electrical outlets which were broken my plugs would not stay in. I paid to have my electrical done which he found the wiring inside the plugs were done incorrectly. Once he opened up the plugs he found bare wires which I had mentioned to him I had been smelling burned smell. The handyman that did the work before had wired the plugs wrong with it shorting out my items I would plug in. John went around checking every out let finding the same things. He rewired everything for me. I had him repair my drain system in my kitchen sink found out the water lines were had been leaking and the drain lines were installed wrong. He took the time to explained in detail and showed me the correct drains that need to be installed. My french doors were not closing properly after John took a look at it he fixed with great ease which others wanted over $300.00 to fix. I cant believe Johns work. I have so much work to be done to my house I will continue using John for all my needs. If you who you can trust let John be your guide he will not do you wrong. I love his workmanship. Money well spent. Kate M.

I had never done any renovations before, and I was concerned about working with a contractor. I am so glad that I chose Excel Construction to remodel my kitchen and bathroom. Eyal and the workers were a pleasure to work with. The main things that I appreciated while working with them were: - They paid attention to my needs, my thoughts, my ideas, and my vision and worked within my budget (which was the most important thing in this remodeling). - Eyal with his office staff made sure to pull all permits for the work and they just informed me when they got them or about any stage of the permit (other builders who quoted me said they did not pull permits) - Eyal made sure to spend a lot of time consulting me and explaining me before the remodeling began. This included many discussions on layouts, appliances/fixtures, designs, what to expect..... -Eyal scheduled their crew and subcontractors. They were able to completely renovate my kitchen and bathroom in 9 weeks. They worked quickly and efficiently. -They paid attention to all the details even the small ones and made sure that everything was completed to my satisfaction. - All the materials that they used, were selected by me and they used high quality raw materials. Overall, I had a good experience working with Excel Construction and would not hesitate to use them again.

First time working with Cal Engeneers, I specifically worked with Khalil, and Lazar, they did an incredible job. We had a one bedroom unit that has not been renovate din over 8 years, they came in, and had the whole place redone in about 11 days. Whole new laminate flooring put in, carpets removed, walls painted, popcorn Celing removed, and many cabinets and closets repainted. Essentially remodeled the entire 1 bedroom apartment. They came in under budget for what I expected and did a lot more than asked. Such as refinish the bathtub and clear out grout. very fast work, always on time, easy to reach and very fair prices. and an over all excellent experience. Just handed them another job in another property.

Scope - replace hallway floors (due to slight flooding/leak); gut reno one of the bathrooms; customize hallway closet(s). Pros: - Contractor was prompt to respond and quick to commence the job - Joe and his team are very professional - Quality of work is good - It is apparent that State Wide has a Subject Matter Expert for every aspect of the reno (different folks for plumbing, carpentry, tiles, flooring). Most likely 3rd parties but pros nonetheless. - flexible payment structure (also accepts CCs) Cons: - Execution was very slow; perhaps Joe's team was focused on bigger projects (it was mentioned on a few occasions) and it was apparent that our reno was not prioritized. - there were items that should have been spec'd out and ordered as to avoid delays (e.g. floor should have been matched on day1, subway tiles etc..). Numerous days were wasted as the team was waiting on the materials - my biggest frustration with the reno was the lack of empathy and accountability. Excuses/justifications were presented instead of just owning up to the significant delay (work was supposed to be executed in 10-14 days max; it took 30 days). It would have been completely fine if the delay was communicated properly instead of us hounding the team. Overall, we are happy with the renovation.

I cannot say enough good things about Guy and his crew. Amazing job from start to finish. Guy took our small idea and turned it into a masterpiece! He was on time and on budget! Two things that I thought were unheard of when it comes to remodeling! Guy was patient and responsive and answered every question without judgement or delay. Construction Owl will most certainly be our first call when we begin our next home remodeling project.

I worked with Joseph on my home remodel. He was very accommodating. I had many special request that he made sure where completed with the most utmost attention to detail. They gutted my kitchen, my bathroom and and remodeled my kitchen and renovated my kitchen. He put in a beautiful tile surround on the shower with a custom glass surround. He made awesome recommendations on where to choose all the finishes. His cabinet maker is a true artist and they made it all custom. Many ammenities he thought of to make this a perfect custom kitchen I will enjoy forever. The Caesarstone counter tops and tile backsplash are beautifully installed. The led under cabinet lights were a great recommendation. The tradesmen who worked on the house were very friendly and accommodating. They left a clean jobsite EVERY day. Overall this was the most pleasant remodel I have ever had done and this is the 5th house I had remodeled.

Over the last three years we have been using McCormick Construction to upgrade the house we purchased in 2008. Joe and his team have added a new Master Bed and Bath (2011) and last summer removed the attached single car garage and built us a man cave big enough for all my toys and my wife's crap. Both the Master Bed/Bath and Garage get very positive comments from the neighbors that walk by the house. Great workmanship, very creative problem solver and his team recently did my parents kitchen remodel last year. Highly recommend him.

Being a person who tends to fall into a true Do-It-Yourselfer, I was reticent in having someone else do our Master Bath and Powder room remodel. I simply didn’t have the time between work and family commitments; I was forced to relinquish the job to someone else. I spent a month interviewing contractors, with roughly 50% no shows and 40% I wouldn’t trust building a dog house, let alone even letting them into my home. Of the remaining 10%, TREEiUM (specifically ‘Guy Borenstein’) stood out as being one of the top three. After a final interview and some pencil sharpening, I gave the nod to TREEiUM. TREEiUM started when the said they would, and finished the job on time and within budget. Best part of all, there was no DRAMA! Guy was there every step of the way, and answered any and all questions I had, even on the weekend! Do your homework when vetting these contracting companies; TREEiUM should be one of your final three contractors. From my perspective, if you are looking for a contracting company, I highly recommend TREEiUM and Guy Borenstein!

We hired W&W builders group to do nearly all house renovation - open up and completely remodel the kitchen, create a master suite, remodel our second bathroom, change hardwood flooring and do interior paint. All team was very professional, knowledgable and always available to answer any questions or solve any issues. In approximately 10 weeks, they transformed the house into a modern masterpiece. Perhaps the best attribute of w&w is that they take pride in their work and want to do the job right. We had new flooring installed in the master bedroom, which did not match the other floors, so they refinished all the floors they all look the same. Our project manager Gil sat down with us and went through the whole contract, line by line. In terms of prices, they are not inexpensive, (also not expensive) but what we got was a top-of-the-line job from experts using quality materials. They were able to anticipate any issues and fix them right away. The price on the contract was the price we paid, no surprises. I highly recommend W&W Builders group and would use them again if we needed another home remodel

Skyline Construction is doing a large remodeling project me. After many, many previous experiences with construction company's in the past 40+ years, I can say unequivocally Skyline Construction is the BEST I've ever dealt with. Erik's knowledge, involvement, and expertise in the construction business far surpasses anyone I ever worked with on other projects. His integrity and that of his hard working crews are exceptional. I highly recommend them for any job you might be considering. I'm extremely happy with everything they have done or suggested to me.

We highly recommend Concept Renovations for home remodeling projects. We received great advice and solutions for our project including an extension out back with all new doors and windows. They come with a "can do attitude", are friendly, and very professional which gave us absolute confidence in hiring them. They not only quickly assessed our project but gave us a detailed guideline as to the cost and scheduling. We were able to start the very next week and they pulled it off. Kitchen, Bathrooms (not just one mind you!), Dining Room, and our extension out back! We are thrilled and we clearly made the right choice!

Ken Kuhles of Adorn Construction is not only an INCREDIBLE contractor but he is a prince among men. I've had the pleasure of working with him on two separate projects--a backyard renovation at our home and an income property renovation. Both times, he exceeded expectation. He is calm under pressure, great at coming up with smart solutions to challenges that may arise, and knows the business inside and out. You will be hard pressed to find a more knowledgeable contractor. Believe me, after have being burned by negative experiences with two separate contractors, Ken has officially rejuvenated my faith in contractors. And, best of all, he is a kind man with integrity. Rare these days.

Just want to say I am so impressed with Moriah Remodeling. I was working with Eran S. He is my project manager. and with his crew. You couldn't ask for anyone better. The attention Eran gives to detail is helpful and refreshing. We are doing a complete renovation of our kitchen, powder room, flooring, family room, two bathroom and laundry room. We are so pleased with the them, they are always on time, protect your flooring, furniture. ... everything is so organized and surprisingly we were able to use their company portal. Today it is very hard to find a reliable company and we would defiantly will recommend this company.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

Why should you hire a contractor?

Hiring a general contractor is a good idea for many remodeling projects. Home renovation contractors have a broad range of skills to manage, coordinate and complete a project. They should help make sure your project comes in on time and within your budget as they hire and supervise all the necessary subcontractors, including electricians and plumbers. They also handle procuring all the materials required for your job. Some homeowners look to save money by acting as their own contractor, but an experienced home renovation contractor is worth the cost. They should know local building codes, be able to pull all necessary permits, and work with inspectors to make sure the construction meets local codes. Also, because they get professional discounts, they can typically buy materials at a better price than you can; better prices on materials and labor save you money, and make up for at least a percentage of the cost of the contractor.

When should you hire a contractor?

A few home remodeling projects can be done by an ambitious DIY-minded homeowner or local handyman, but many are best completed by a professional home renovation contractor. You should hire a contractor when you’re planning a large project that takes time, machinery or large tools, and several workers; a kitchen remodel, new bathroom or home addition will be most successful with a licensed, expert contractor at the helm. It’s particularly important to have a professional contractor on board for construction, electrical, plumbing and HVAC projects that require inspections to meet local building codes. Of course, you can hire a contractor for smaller projects, too, if you prefer to let an expert handle things like addition or removal of a wall, small framing projects, or anything that requires a permit.

You should hire a contractor when you’re ready to start a remodeling project and you have plans, a budget and a timeline for the work in hand, but before any remodeling work begins.

How much will it cost to remodel my house?

The cost to remodel a home is highly variable — size and scope of the project, quality of materials, and the number of subcontractors required to complete the job all affect the total cost. The average national cost of a home renovation project is $13,500. The national average per-square-foot cost of a remodel ranges from $25 to $100. Nationally, kitchen and bathroom remodels are the most popular types of projects, in part because they typically have the highest return on investment when the home is sold. The national average cost of a major kitchen remodel ranges from $25,000 to $62,000, while the average bathroom remodel tends to cost $6,000 to $18,000. In addition to materials and labor costs, many remodeling project costs include permit fees, which, average $900 or more, depending on your location.

Do I need a contractor for a kitchen remodel?

A kitchen remodel is one of the most important investments you can make in your home, and it’s critical to get the details right; that’s where a home renovation contractor comes in. A minor remodel usually includes new cabinet faces and hardware, replacement appliances, and paint, while an extensive job may enlarge the kitchen’s square footage, install new cabinets or an island, change the layout, and lay new tile or hardwood floors. Any renovation that includes filing permits, construction, or electrical or plumbing work is best completed by an experienced contractor who knows local codes.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
