Not knowing what thumbtack was exactly, I put out a request for cabinet assembly/installation. Within a day I decided to use a former contractor for that work but Jose had responded quickly for the job. I noticed on his list of specialties that he also specialized in concrete so I asked him if he would bid on a patio project I had in mind. Not only was his bid 30% lower than two other licensed contractors, but he was willing to do extra work for just cost of materials. His level of communication was always good and timely, he always showed up at the time he promised, he accomplished his daily commitments and goals on time, his helpers were tenacious and diligent, he cleaned up the yard every day, he had a team of workers who each knew their required tasks at hand, everyone worked long hours until their duties were completed, and needless to say, the patio slab came out perfect as I can tell. I am a retired handyman and I have never seen a better performance at a job site. After the job was completed, Jose came back the next day to power wash the concrete and because I couldn't be available for the next couple of days, Jose waited patiently and trusted me to pay him his balance owed him when we could finally get together. Jose has obviously impressed me with his professional demeanor, sincerity in his desire to satisfy his customers, and conscientious strive for perfection. I found his work ethic second to none. I will use his service again in the future. I am a difficult person to please and many contractors have found me to be too demanding but with Jose he was always at least one step ahead of me. Jose knows concrete. Signed, Dan Ross

My experience with Houman was absolutely amazing even though his not licensed but his knowledge was just like he was licensed ,I hired him to expand my bathroom and remodel pretty much everything and also I needed him to relocate a door in the living room on a different spot. On the bathroom had to remove the old wiring for lights due to being old and changed them for new ones. He also did the tiles and put new cabinet and shower. Also in my bedroom I needed more lights in the ceiling due to it was to dark. I'm glad I hired him, his super fast, affordable and clean.

They have taken most of cabinet doors to their factory and have them done with several standard process; They complete rest of frame works in our house with same standard. We are very satisfied with their work, they are a great team for the painting job!

Scott did a great job of refinishing two small chair-side chests. I bought them years ago, and the finish was almost completely off of one of them. The other was nicked and dinged and showed substantial wear. Scott restored them to their original beauty in less time than he estimated for the project. Great job!

Miguel and his co-worker did a fantastic job with the install and design of our new countertops. He was able to meet us at the slab facility where we were then able to see the types of countertops available and also select our kitchen sink/faucet at the same location. Great job! I would highly recommend them.

Nothing could have been better! It was awesome! Don came to our place on a Sunday to meet us and give an estimate! The job was performed timely and unbelievably reasonably priced! The tile was installed by rob who did an amazing job! We thought we miscalculated the space and he was so good he pieced together the remainder of the scrap to match the pattern and compete the install...very professional and exceptional work...I've already referred to several friends and would highly recommend to anyone considering tile and/or cabinet work! Willing to share pics of requested!!

Robert did great work for our small project! He was quick to respond and even came out on a weekend to make sure the job was taken care of. In addition, he repaired one of our small interior cabinet doors while he was here. Definitely recommend!

We hired Kent Merrill and his team for our recent kitchen cabinet refacing project. Kent was extremely professional and easy to work with. He listened carefully to our design ideas while providing helpful feedback and information. He is honest, hardworking and takes great pride in his work. When faced with project challenges he does not look for shortcut solutions. He goes out of his way to find the BEST solution. He is flexible but at the same time a perfectionist, which we really appreciated. Our kitchen was completed on time and on budget. The final product exceeded even our initial expectations. I think the most important thing about Arnoldo is, that he is very honest which is a quality you don't find in many people today. His work is quality work, he finished on time, and everything he said he was going to do he did. We are totally happy with our newly refinished cabinets and appreciate Arnoldos hard professional work. Mr. and Mrs. Riley

Jim has done so much work at my house! He replaced my brick fireplace with stacked stone and a custom made mantle. It looks amazing. Then he put crown moulding up, even on the kitchen cabinets. He modified the kitchen cabinets so they could hold glass inserts, installed a wine fridge, backsplash, and custom wood counter. All of his work was perfect! I can't wait to get him back to remodel my guest bathroom. I saw one he did and it looks like it's right out of a magazine.

Needed to clean and restain our typical builder tract kitchen cabinets that were now 10 years old. Luis came in with a very reasonable offer. Luis and his assistant, Luke, were meticulous. I was impressed by the way they covered and protected the flooring, sealed off the 2 adjacent rooms. The doors were removed and taken to his shop. The remaining cabinets were worked on and completed within 2 days. The cabinet doors were returned 2 days later and reinstalled. The cabinets and doors look great. They look new, refreshed, the stain is even and the surface shines. We are extremely pleased with the results. I highly recommend Luis. He is knowledgable, professional, courteous, and they don't leave a mess.

Steve did a great job at installing a very difficult "lantern" style tile in the kitchen that needed many difficult to make cuts. Tile went from countertop to cabinets, or to ceiling in one area. Steve was reliable and communicated his status consistently, and completed the job quickly. He also kept the job area clean and neat, and did his tile cuts outside of the house which was much appreciated.

This guy is a real artist. He took an antique dresser a previous owner had installed as a bathroom vanity without drawers or protection of the wood and added 8 custom drawers and inlaid glass tile on the top including a beautiful backsplash in addition to refinishing the vanity. I can't imagine this vanity could look any better, and I am so happy I opted to repair it rather than replace it. It is now truly one of a kind. Jim is a perfectionist who did not give up when pieces of the vanity fell apart; he simply added new pieces that appear to have been there forever. If you want something wooden of value created or repaired, seriously, talk to Jim White. You will be amazed. I would love to attach the before an after pics but if you email him I am sure he will send you some as well.

They reworked some of the kitchen cabinets and replaced a kitchen countertop on an island. The installers were cheerful and did a decent job. Only thing is that it took a long time to actually get the job completed. Would use them again.

Casey has done several jobs for us over the last few years, including full inside and outside painting of our house. The outside jobs included overhang and bottom of the back wooden deck were spot on. He did a great job on new stair railing, cabinets and staining our front yard fence, including a separate area around the pool. He is prompt, efficient, clean and reliable. All of the various jobs have been done in the timeline he projects and discusses when he gives us a bid. The results are impressive and immediately improve our property value. To date there haven't been any problems with the jobs Casey has done and I don't anticipate any. If a problem were to arise, am confident that it would be handled professionally. I'm looking forward to getting our kitchen floor replaced next.

I'll start with the good. The guys who arrived to do the work--3 cabinet/counter installs, 3 lighting installs, 3 toilets, 2 new floors, 3 paint colors--were all good men, with the primary contractor being exceptional (Javi, I believe). Communication was an issue at times, but we worked around it as best we could. Work ethic was strong, they were respectful and careful, even when I requested touch up after touch up. And, when I decided last minute to have the showers painted, they called a friend and worked around him. The items selected all came from the Pykles showroom, and with my budget constraints, I didn't have much choice, but what we got is still very nice. We went a tiny bit over budget once I realized brushed nickel fixtures weren't included, but they found them for me to save me having to buy them myself and made sure I got all the counters I wanted. Quality of workmanship and products is high. And my baths look amazing! Now, the bad. I'm not sure how it happened, but somehow the cabinets that arrived for my 3 baths were not the right ones, so we were off to a bad start on the first day. We had one that was the right size, but the drawers were on the wrong side for the plumbing, so we had to make adjustments. They told me they would be installed on Tuesday, then Wednesday, but they didn't actually install the other two until Friday and the last one on Saturday (I at least had one toilet and one shower the whole time tho--whew!). That whole ordeal set us back almost two days, so what was originally going to be a 4-day install took 5.5 :( The last day, Saturday, was a scramble to get them done quickly enough to make it to another job, and there was a miscommunication with the crew chief, but we worked it out, apologies all around. The chief came back later in the day to take care of a few quick things, and he'll be back later to handle the absolute last thing--a soap dish that couldn't be mounted without damaging the new shower paint. I appreciated the extra concern. I've never had a contractor show up when they say in the morning, leave when they say in the evening, or finish as planned, and these guys struggled with that a bit too. I give 4-4.5 stars because of the miscommunications and minor delays in what was otherwise a good remodel.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you refinish kitchen cabinets?

If you’re ready for a new look and feel in your kitchen but don’t want to replace the cabinet layout or your cabinet doors, refinishing your existing kitchen cabinets is a great option. To be a good candidate for cabinet refinishing, your cabinet boxes and doors need to be in good condition. Cabinet refinishing includes taking down your doors, sanding or stripping the surface, preparing the doors with primer as needed, refinishing them with as many coats of stain or paint are necessary, then re-hanging them in their original locations. If you’re not in love with your kitchen cabinet layout, talk to a designer or contractor about creating an alternative. Refinishing simply means adding new shine to the existing setup, so if you’re dying to have a pull-out pantry or maximize wall space by going flush to the ceiling, you may want a different approach. Functional and stylish ready-to-assemble (RTA) cabinets can be similar in cost to refacing your existing cabinets, so keep the budget-friendly RTA option in mind when making decisions.

How do you resurface cabinets?

Resurfacing kitchen cabinets means that you retain your original cabinet boxes and existing cabinet layout and simply remove and replace the front layer of your cabinet doors. Cabinet resurfacing can also entail replacing damaged cabinet doors, keeping those that are in good shape, and installing a new surface on all of them. Cabinet resurfacing may also refer to a decision to completely change out cabinet doors because they are damaged or their style is out of date, but keeping the existing cabinet boxes and layout.

If you’re handy and have all the proper tools, cabinet resurfacing can be a DIY project, especially if you’re simply repainting. However, if you’re not comfortable removing and replacing your cabinet doors, doing precision measurements and cutting, or working with sanders and power tools, then this may be a project better left to the pros. You or your handyman or cabinet installation specialist will remove all cabinet door and drawer fronts and all hardware, then prepare the surfaces for a new layer. The pros should also update the veneer or laminate the frames to match. Once the new laminate, veneer or surface has been applied and new hardware installed, your cabinet doors and drawers are hung once more in their original locations. The national average cost for refacing cabinets is $5,000.

Can you resurface laminate cabinets?

Resurfacing laminate cabinets is an affordable and relatively easy way to give an outdated kitchen a fresh new look. If your existing cabinets are in good shape and you like your current cabinet layout, putting a fresh face on your kitchen could mean simply painting over the current laminate or putting a new laminate surface on the doors and drawers. Cabinet resurfacing may be possible for the capable DIY homeowner, but if you don’t have the proper tools or the know-how, it’s wise to call a handyman or a cabinet installation specialist to ensure you have a professional-looking outcome. To make sure your kitchen is right for cabinet resurfacing (as opposed to completely replacing your cabinets), ask yourself:

  • Do I like the layout of my current cabinets?
  • Are the cabinet boxes structurally sound?
  • Are the floor and framing in good condition to keep cabinets supported over time?
  • Are the cabinets free of water or wood damage?

How much does it cost to refinish kitchen cabinets?

Cabinet refinishing revives dull or dinged-up doors and drawers. The cost of cabinet refinishing will vary based on factors such as the number of linear feet of cabinetry you have, the amount of nicks and scratches that need repair, the level of detail on your cabinets, and more. The pros typically will remove the cabinet doors and then sand or strip them down to create a beautifully smooth new surface. After prepping the surface with primer as needed, the pros may then repaint or stain the doors to give them a new lease on life. Cabinets with intricate detail or extensive surface damage will likely cost more to refinish, as they will take more time and effort. Keep in mind that you should only elect to do cabinet refinishing if the cabinet boxes are structurally sound and you plan to keep your current kitchen layout for a number of years. The investment will be wasted if the cabinet boxes are in disrepair and will need replacement soon, or if you’re planning a remodel in two years. The national average price range for cabinet refinishing is between $1,500 and $6,000.
