Jose did a very good job. It involved removal of old shrubs and plants on side of my garage and driveway, preparing the soil, fertilizing, then planting ground cover. Next, between the driveway and the plantings, he installed a crushed rock area, which involved digging out soil to allow a substantial layer of rock laid upon heavy ground paper. On the other side of the house, he planted additional ground cover along a 60 ft. bed. He also found several watering heads that needed adjustment or replacement. He worked at a steady and deliberate pace and completed the job expeditiously. I would recommend Jose and intend to hire him again.

Chadd removed 3 large building structures, removed 100' of chain link fence, built 100' of wood fence, installed wood gate, removed dirt from back yard and replaced with new dirt. This project was larger than expected, Chadd embraced all the challenges that came with the project. He is very professional and did a fantastic job, I highly recommend him for any project.

Jose and his crew removed/replaced my driveway, as well as my front walkway. Also added additional walkways in the back yard. In all that they did, they were professional and diligent. Jose consulted me when necessary, but in general he had absorbed everything I wanted in the initial discussion. I couldn't be happier with their work. A truly professional operation.

Robin is a true master craftsman and built a gorgeous fence and 2 side gates for us. He has a keen awareness for the big picture and is methodical through each step of the process to avoid mishaps. Don't expect a 2 day chop shop type job. He takes great pride in making sure everything is level and is built to last. We absolutely love our fence and gates - they give our house so much needed charm. We went with a horizontal slat design, Redwood, and Bitterwood color stain. Highly recommend Robin.

JSJ Services built a fence/gate and a shade structure, re-landscaped a steep backyard bank, and trimmed several trees for us. Jason's response was prompt and he got his crew out there quickly to get our job done. The work was completed in a timely manner and as we asked. All the crew were super conscientious and friendly. We plan to re-landscape our front yard in the next year, and we are so pleased with JSJ that we plan to hire them again for that work. They are good people. Thanks Jason & Crew!

I hired Gilbert to install a double door gate and to lay down sod in my backyard. Both jobs were done very well. If I am in need of another project I would most likely give Gilbert a call and see if he will do the work for me.

I had a 12 ft gate rebuilt for our driveway. The design is what was discussed and installation was quick...1 day work. They seemed reasonable from the other quotes that we had received. The gate works as a gate should, so we are happy.

We had a 3' wood fence in our backyard that was not keeping the rabbits out. We hired Mark to get creative and build us something that would be aesthetically pleasing, as well as functional. He definitely got the job done! He added horizontal lattice to the short fence, suggested caps for the new posts. He had the lattice work painted before installation. It looks beautiful! We are pleased with Mark's work. As well as being creative, he is very conscientious and meticulous about his work.. We definitely recommend him to others looking for a fence installer.

I hired ENrique to install a new fence in my front yard. I picked out some pre-fab panels from Home Depot and he met me with a large truck and a crew and installed the fence in 2 days. For the most part, he showed up when he said he would and finished the job. The gate just needs some adjusting, which I am waiting for them to come back out still do. I will hire Enrique for future jobs and happy to refer him to clients & friends.

Artisan Construction has done several projects for me including designing and constructing a back and front fence, including front and driveway gates; installing a tankless water heater; putting in a slate floor in my utility room; and attending to a variety of misc. issues inside and outside my home. Blake Vasek and his crew were efficient, dependable, and very pleasant to work with. All projects turned out beautifully. I've received many positive comments from friends and neighbors regarding the new front fence and gates. Artisan Construction receives my highest recommendation.

Thomas Lane arrived on time when we first met. We told him what we needed and the short time frame we had. He had his materials with him and took measurements and showed us many types of fencing and hinge and gate lock mechanisms. He was patient while I asked questions and when I asked for clarification when I wasn't clear about something. He began and finished the job on schedule. He cleaned up the mess as he worked. Thomas made some changes as I requested but still managed to finish on time. Thomas was very professional. I would highly recommend Thomas and plan to use him again.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much is a redwood fence per foot?

A redwood fence is a long-lasting home investment that can add beauty and major curb appeal to your home. Redwood fence installation costs are higher than those for pressure-treated pine or cedar, due to the relative scarcity of the wood. Pricing can vary for redwood fence installation costs based on regional labor rates, current prices of redwood planks, the height and linear feet of the fence, and any custom designs or features. Redwood fences, in addition to being beautiful, are naturally more resistant against bugs and rot than less hardy or dense woods. Redwood fences also generally fare well in wet or humid climates due to their natural oils — which also make them easier to maintain. Materials costs per linear foot for redwood planks can range anywhere from $6 to $20 or more, depending on grade, quality and height.

How much does it cost to put up a chain-link fence?

Chain-link fence is one of the most affordable options for adding safety and value to your home or business. The national average chain-link fence installation cost is $2,750. Chain-link fences are relatively simple for the pros to install; a fence of less than 150 linear feet can often be put up in under one day. A good rule of thumb is to add an additional workday for each additional 100 linear feet of fence to be installed.

Chain-link fence installation costs are affected by the fluctuating cost of steel, regional labor rates, the height of fence you select, and the features you select, such as a powder-coated finish. The industry standard is galvanized steel, which is rust- and corrosion-resistant. Galvanized chain-link fence installation cost, including labor and materials, is typically $12 per linear foot. For a more contemporary and elegant option, black powder-coated galvanized chain-link fence might cost approximately $15 per linear foot on average, including materials and labor. For industrial sites or businesses, 10-foot-high galvanized chain-link fences may provide additional security, but also have an added cost. A 10-foot-high chain-link fence could cost $17-$18 per linear foot, including labor and materials.

How much does it cost to install a vinyl fence?

A new fence can mean added home value, increased curb appeal, and improved home security. The national average vinyl fence installation cost is $4,600. Vinyl fences have a number of appealing qualities such as their durability, their lasting good looks (they don’t weather like wood does), their versatility, and the fact that they require little to no maintenance such as staining. Fencing companies typically charge per linear foot for vinyl fence installation. They calculate their estimates based on materials to be used, height of fence, linear feet of the proposed fence, and the accessibility of the terrain. If the workers need to level the land before work begins, your vinyl fence installation costs will probably increase. Vinyl fences are typically more expensive than wood or chain-link. For example, one company might charge $19-$22 per linear foot for a basic 6-foot vinyl privacy fence. Another company might charge $25-$35 per linear foot for standard vinyl fencing, while decorative fencing with custom detail could increase that cost to $50 per linear foot. For a 6-foot-high white vinyl privacy fence with two walk-through gates (plus demolition and disposal of the old fence), the cost of the total project could run $8,000. A 4-foot-high, 36-linear-foot white picket vinyl fence with one gate could cost $2,600.

How much does it cost to install a wood fence?

Help define your property line, protect your home and yard, and boost your curb appeal with a new wood fence. The national average for wood fence installation cost is $3,250. Wood fence installation costs will vary based on your geographic location, the type of wood you select, the height and style of wood fence you desire, and the condition of your property. Pressure-treated pine is a common and attractive choice that is usually resilient against rot and bugs. Cedar is another budget-friendly option that, although more expensive than pressure-treated pine, can be more affordable than redwood or teak. A wood fence requires maintenance to ensure its long-term health and beauty, so keep future staining and painting costs in mind when you’re calculating fence installation costs. Here are some examples of how height and material affect the approximate cost of wood fences:

  • 6-foot-high, pressure-treated pine fence: $15-$17 per linear foot.
  • 4-foot-high, pressure-treated pine fence: $13-$20 per linear foot.
  • Cedar fence: $18-$25 per linear foot.
  • 6-foot-high, double-sided (meaning both sides are uniform), pressure-treated pine fence with 6x6 posts: $25 per linear foot.
  • 12-foot-high, pressure-treated pine fence with custom detailing: $75 per linear foot.
  • 6-foot-high, pressure-treated pine fence with a custom lattice top: $30-$50 per linear foot.

How much does it cost to install a fence gate?

Adding a gate to your fence can be a practical way to provide access to a yard, work area or outdoor living space while ensuring safety and privacy. Gate installation costs will vary based on the gate material you select, the size of your gate, whether you install a fence at the same time, and any special features you’d like to add. Standard opening size for a single-wide gate is 4 feet; a double-wide gate is 8 feet. A small gate may be for decoration; a double-wide gate can be mounted on a rolling caster system to allow access for cars or wide loads. Here are some examples of average fence gate installation costs:

  • 4-foot, single-swing chain-link gate: $100 for materials and installation costs.
  • 28-foot wheeled chain-link gate on a caster system: $800-$1,000 for materials and installation costs.
  • 4-foot, single-swing wood gate: $75.
  • 8-foot double-wide wood gate: $150.
  • 4-foot white vinyl walk-through gate: $300–$400 for materials and installation costs.
  • 8-foot, double-wide white vinyl gate: about $800 for materials and installation costs.
  • White vinyl gate fence more than 8 feet wide: $1,200-$1,500 for materials and installation.
  • Arched black powder-coated aluminum pool gates: $175-$200 per gate.
