Very impressed! Our job was very challenging and he did not give up as most contractors would have. Hung our TV over fireplace with very minimal damage. Great communication and he is beyond professional. Will hire again!!!

All the employees were extremely helpful, friendly, and courteous. I’ve hired many contractors over the last 30 years to do various projects in and around my home and Stephen and Matt’s attention to detail, quality of work, and professionalism, far out ranks any of my previous experiences. I will continue to use them as well as refer them to my neighbors and friends. Thank you Box Construction!

Jose arrived on time & quickly diagnosed & fixed the problem. He also discovered a potentially serious problem & took the time to fix it. He was reasonably priced compared to our local contractors.

Jose came out and did a fantastic job. I've been remodeling homes for a long time, and have worked with many contractors, and he is one of the better ones I've worked with.

If I could select 5 areas instead of just 3 that I liked about Dave, I would! If you have the opportunity to hire Dave, consider yourself lucky. You’ll feel completely at ease that your project will happen on time and on budget with good communication. And having been a builder hiring and managing contractors for some 10 years on and off...this kind of contractor is rare. I first hired Dave to install the 22 windows in my new construction project. That went extremely well. Then I hired him to paint the house. I wasn’t ready as scheduled and he handled it professionally with understanding. We started 2 days later and he hit it hard. Then I hired him to complete the drywall, mud and tape for 1000sf. Those walls are perfectly smooth...no texture...straight corners. Then he tiled a bathroom with 2’ x 6” tiles and adjoining pebble stone mesh tile. IT IS PERFECT. When the last task was taking longer than expected, Dave’s wife and son jumped in and worked until 11pm to finish when promised. As I say, if you’re reading this then count yourself lucky to have happened across Dave.

After having two TERRIBLE Experiences with the first 3 people I hired off of thumbtack, I was literally desperate to find someone I could trust to not rip me off and could get the job done. Then Steven came to my rescue! I'm so thankful that I found him and I simply cannot say enough good things about him! He's a man of many trades. The original job was repairing all of my interior doors and my interior baseboards/casings- so he took all the doors home with him on the same day as our consultation to be sanded down, repaired and re sprayed. He removed and replaced about 40 feet of baseboard in the condo (which turned out great!). Not only did he do a fantastic job with those initial jobs, but he ended up being able to do many other jobs for me while he was here too! He replaced my showerhead and tub spout, added a handheld shower fixture, repaired a broken Tv stand, retextured multiple areas of damaged wall, switched out some of my outlet receptacles with new USB receptacles, fixed two other outlets that weren't working at all for the last couple years, replaced my smoke detectors, and helped me repaint my bedroom, living room, and kitchen. He was FAST, efficient, friendly, and his overall work was done very well. This guy knows exactly what he's doing and will not leave until he knows the job is done- and done right! Even if that means he ends up losing money in the end- he isn't one of those contractors who quotes you a price and it ends up being double. He stands by his initial quote and that is something that very few contractors do! My only mistake was not hiring him to do the entire job. I thought that hiring two different contractors would help in getting what I needed done completed in a shorter amount of time. Well, I was wrong. The other guy did a half-assed job on his part, which resulted in me needing to hire Steven to come back and repair the other guys work in the end. Thanks again, Steven! You're awesome!!!

I'm a Realtor who had a job that needed to be done fast. Hired Tuan to install a dishwasher and fix a stove. He was prompt and courteous. Price was great and did a great job. Bonus to Tuan for showing up last minute on a very HOT Labor Day weekend when others would not. Currently have him providing a bid for some work at my house. Would definitely recommend General Maintenance and Remodeling.

Excellent experience from start to finish. Calvin spent a good 30 minutes on our first call patiently answering every question I had and letting me know all the options for a home stereo install with 5-channel surround and concealed wires/cables. Highly satisfied with the outcome and the overall value. I wouldn't hesitate to use Tech Savvy for future audio or smart home projects and confidently recommend them.

The owner Zady did a great job from start to finish. He gave us proper expectations and was very respectful throughout his work. He was very understanding of my sickly mother and pregnant wife and was able to accommodate a difficult time availability to make sure all of us are comfortable. Other than his spotless work, what made him stand out even more so than other contractors is how well he cleaned up the job site and left it cleaner than before he came. Great owner, great prices and excellent work!

I will be calling on Matt from now on for any tasks that need a contractor, handyman, or jack-of-all-trades! He is ultra responsive and his rates are extremely reasonable - especially considering the excellent skills he brings to the task and his “let’s get this done” work ethic. Matt is professional, courteous, very conscientious yet flexible: so easy to work with! He responded to my handyman request within minutes of my posting it. We worked out details at that time, he accepted the job and he had everything completeed at my home 36 hours later! While working steadily, quickly and effectively, he still took the time to involve me in “design” or “installation” decisions when there were options - something I really appreciated. He’s a great person; left the work areas clean and tidy and left me feeling I’d found a great resource!

I though John communicated very well during our construction project. He was very flexible on any changes. Most contractors are very flaky; not showing up on time or wanting to get paid before the project is completed. You will not go wrong hiring John. He is top shelf.

I was very happy with how our garage project turned out. We needed to completely insulate, drywall and paint our garage with cabinets and shelving and he was able to complete the project in a timely manner. Nicholas Reyes Construction was very easy to work with and gave us a competitive price and never tried to up-sell additional items like we have experienced with other contractors. His work quality is excellent and always kept us up to date with the progression. I highly recommend him.

I have an older attached home on a golf course, and I love the location. So when I made the decision to entirely remodel my 2 bedroom, 2 bathroom home, I asked a long-time friend for a referral and met Boardwalk Construction. It seemed a bit overwhelming for me, as the entire place was going to be gutted, and practically every square inch redone including enclosing a courtyard and replacing some big custom windows….not to mention a complete new kitchen and flooring throughout. When Ed came out, I immediately knew he was my guy. He’s no-nonsense, and has tons of experience and great ideas. He’s a problem solver with great resources and vendors. Jesus on his crew did an amazing job on the bathroom tile – it’s just beautiful. I can’t believe the transformation of my home, and I would recommend Boardwalk to anyone who wants a fair, honest, and qualify contractor. ~ Client

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do construction project managers do?

Construction project managers help in all stages of your construction project, starting from the very first step. Typically paid a percentage of a total project cost, they are part of the design and planning process and help ensure seamless communication between the design parties and the construction team. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, their scope of work includes preparing cost estimates, budgets and work timetables; interpreting and explaining contracts and technical information to other professionals; reporting work progress and budget to clients; collaborating with architects, engineers and other construction pros; selecting subcontractors and scheduling and coordinating their tasks; responding to work delays, emergencies and other problems; and ensuring compliance with legal requirements, building and safety codes, and other regulations.

The work of construction project managers may seem very similar to that of general contractors, but there are some critical differences. One difference is that, unlike most general contractors, project managers are not engaged in the actual construction — they are onsite overseeing the work of subcontractors. Another key difference is that project managers are hired during the design phase, while general contractors are hired after plans have been made. The project manager is generally paid a percentage of the total project cost, while the general contractor is more typically paid according to the bid they gave to build your project.

    What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

Why should you hire a contractor?

Hiring a general contractor is a good idea for many remodeling projects. Home renovation contractors have a broad range of skills to manage, coordinate and complete a project. They should help make sure your project comes in on time and within your budget as they hire and supervise all the necessary subcontractors, including electricians and plumbers. They also handle procuring all the materials required for your job. Some homeowners look to save money by acting as their own contractor, but an experienced home renovation contractor is worth the cost. They should know local building codes, be able to pull all necessary permits, and work with inspectors to make sure the construction meets local codes. Also, because they get professional discounts, they can typically buy materials at a better price than you can; better prices on materials and labor save you money, and make up for at least a percentage of the cost of the contractor.

How do I find out if a contractor is licensed?

It’s important to know if your project requires work by a licensed professional, as licensing laws can vary by state, locality, and job details. You can find general licensing information online at the government websites that handle occupational licensing for a given profession in your state or location. Some states designate a project cost over which you have to hire a licensed contractor. To find qualified licensed contractors, search your state’s licensing board. For example, in California, the Department of Consumer Affairs operates a searchable database through the Contractors State License Board. In some states, contracting licenses are provided at a regional level. You can find links to specific databases on BRB Publications’ Occupational Licensing page. Red flags that a contractor may not be licensed or may be providing an expired or false license number are unreasonably low bids or a request for complete payment upfront. How do you choose a commercial general contractor?

A commercial contractor provides similar services as a residential general contractor but specializes in working with large-scale projects for businesses, schools, nonprofits, governments and development firms. When researching commercial general contractors, review their portfolio of work and confirm they have ample experience working in the area you need. For example, if you are building a small strip mall, ask if the contractors have experience successfully incorporating all the needed elements such as a parking lot, meeting ADA requirements, accessing the proper permits, and completing work on time.

Once you’ve identified several qualified candidates, request bids for your project and then compare the scope of work with your needs and budget. Your commercial general contractor should oversee design, permitting, construction, materials purchase, and adherence to building code and zoning regulations, as well as sticking to an agreed-upon budget and schedule. It’s important to establish clear communication with your future commercial general contractor, as this will mean a smoother process for everyone. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
