"Using thumbtack was easy and simple. Been looking for a good cmt specialized in deep tissue massage. Jennifer was great from the start with communication to setting up an appointment. The massage was amazing. Got a lot of my knots out and knew where to focus to help release all the tension in the muscle. I will be going back. "

"I came to Dessi for a deep tissue massage and her work was amazing. She immediately understood all my tension points and has a thorough knowledge of how the body works and how things connect - she found pain points needing relief that I didn't even know I had. She was also extremely professional and did a full consultation of my walk to understand my specific needs before even starting the massage's time. I highly recommend her services!"

"Nathaniel is a great massage therapist that not only knows massage but multiple modalities of bodywork. He performed deep tissue, trigger point therapy, and myofacial release on my body. After one session my body immedietly had more Range Of Motion. As a personal trainer for fitness 19 i even started referring my clients to Nathaniel for their bodywork. Most massage therapists are either too soft or aggresive but Nathaniel knows the sweet spot for each individual. If your looking for a good massage therapist Nathaniel is your guy.- Raymond Sunga"

"I've got massages from Jessica since December 2017. I keep having low-back problems from time to time as I'm sitting all day at work and my hamstrings become too tight. She carefully listens to my requests and develops unique plans combining various massage techniques, moves, and stretches. She resolves the problem areas with smooth, uniform pressure, and also helps me become deeply relaxed. She works very efficiently and with great precision, and usually leaves me with some great tips on posture. She thoroughly understands the human body and never hesitates to explain the cause of my problems with the scientific names of muscles, ligaments, and bones. Jessica is extremely professional and takes great care to make me feel comfortable throughout the session. She has a calm, kind, intuitive, and scientific nature and it is such a wonderful experience to get a massage from her."

"Alexander was phenomenal. I went to him for a deep tissue massage to address some tightness that had arisen from my yoga practice. He was very friendly and professional, and his space was quiet and clean. Per his advisory, the massage was definitely not gentle, but it was deeply healing. He always made a point to coach me through moments where I was experiencing heightened discomfort due to built-up tension. I was particularly impressed with how sensitive he was to the slightest movements within different muscle groups (even when I wasn't aware of them myself). We chatted for about 10 minutes afterward, and I was impressed with his thoughtfulness. He explained that we often carry tightness and pain in certain areas as manifestation of experiences and feelings. He encouraged me to 1) notice what feels different after bodywork and 2) consider what may have caused it. Many bodyworkers speak to the psychosomatic nature of muscle tension, but our conversation was particularly enlightening for me. His candor and kindness really made the experience for me. Do yourself a favor and book a session with Alex!"

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a deep tissue full body massage?

A deep tissue full body massage is a form of healing bodywork. At your first massage, your massage therapist will do a brief intake. They will ask you questions about the type of pressure you’d like to receive during your deep tissue massage, any previous massage experience you’ve had, and any injuries or sensitivities you have. You can remain clothed, or the massage therapist will provide draping so that even if you’re not wearing clothes you are always fully covered. Deep tissue massage may be a good option for people with chronic pain or muscle tension. The systematic deep tissue strokes will work to break down any scar tissue or stiff tissues and create ease in your body again. Massage therapists use their hands, forearms, fists and knuckles to knead and stroke your muscles and loosen adhesions. Although deep tissue massage work is intense, it should not be painful, so communicate clearly with your massage therapist so they know if you’re having any discomfort. The national average cost of a deep tissue massage is between $70 and $90.

Do deep tissue massages work?

Deep tissue massage not only feels fabulous, it can provide results. The massage technique targets deeper layers of muscle and your connective tissue. For its ability to stimulate those deeper muscles, deep tissue massage is commonly used during recuperation from sports-related and other injuries, according to the Mayo Clinic. Deep tissue massage has been proved to reduce high blood pressure and a range of other ailments. Deep tissue and other types of massage are frequently used for relieving stress, managing pain, breaking down scar tissue, relieving muscle tension and improving health. The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health cites the following as health conditions for which that deep tissue massage can provide relief:

  • Chronic low back pain, chronic neck pain, and osteoarthritis of the knee
  • Labor pains
  • Depression and anxiety
  • Fibromyalgia pain and fatigue
  • Headaches
  • HIV/AIDS

The proper deep tissue massage may also benefit preterm infant health. Cancer patients may experience reduced pain, increased relaxation, and improved mood.

What is the purpose of a deep tissue massage?

There are many reasons to get a deep tissue massage. A deep tissue massage can release adhesions — also known as knots — that are causing painful tension in your muscles. Deep tissue massage can promote healing and ease discomfort related to illnesses such as cancer, chronic headaches, osteoarthritis of the knee, chronic neck or back pain, depression, and more, according to the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health. If you have an old sports injury such as shin splints, or a bad back from an old car accident, deep tissue massage can promote healing in your traumatized and scarred soft tissues and get you on the road to recovery. The strokes and techniques used in deep tissue massage work to lengthen soft tissue structures that have stiffened and hardened into knotty adhesions that allow minimal movement. Deep tissue massage can loosen these adhesions so that long-standing scar tissue releases and you can gain more mobility and more freedom from stiffness and pain. And it just feels good. The national average cost of a deep tissue massage is between $70 and $90.

What is the difference between a deep tissue massage and a Swedish massage?

Deep tissue massage and Swedish massage are both forms of therapeutic bodywork. In both modalities, a licensed massage therapist uses strokes administered with their hands or forearms to loosen and relax your muscles and other soft tissue. These releases can promote relaxation, pain relief and wellness.

Deep tissue massage may be an excellent therapeutic choice for people with chronic pain or severe tension in their muscles. The deep tissue massage technique moves below the top layer of muscle and soft tissue to release adhesions in your core muscles. In comparison, the strokes used in Swedish massage focus on loosening and relaxing the top layer of your soft tissues. Swedish massage produces relaxation and well-being, but if you have a long-term injury or back pain that won’t seem to go away, deep tissue massage may be a better option for you. The systematic deep tissue strokes will work to break down any scar tissue or stiff tissues and create ease in your body again.
