We hired Pete to cater my 35th birthday party for 22 people which was a murder mystery party that we hosted at our home. From the first time we spoke, he was very responsive, answering my phone calls, emails and texts. He offered a lot of advice and any questions I had. He also had items that he brought that helped me cut down on my rental prices (plates, cloth napkins and silverware). All of my guests commented on how delicious all of his food was including apps, salad, main dishes and desserts. It was all delicious and presented very well. He and his two servers were great with helping to set up and break down and they were very very polite and considerate. My only real comparison is when my husband and I got married 8 years ago and used the facilities on-site catering company. Although it was a completely different type of event, I was somewhat expecting to have a deposit, signed contract and more of a set "this is the menu" like we did for the wedding but in this case, we didn't. Typically I am wanting to be very hands on (some may say controlling :) ) and have every detail planned out but I let Pete run with the menu (aside from my dietary restrictions and a couple of preferences) and he was great, I have no regrets and would hire him again no questions asked! The whole evening was a success and I would highly recommend working with Pete. I am thinking of what event I could host next just so I could have Pete come cater again. I will be recommending him to anyone I know who is searching for a caterer.

Taqueria Cazadores catered a party for us, a school fundraiser for 70 parents. Showed up early, food ready on time, amazing reviews from the guests for the taco bar and especially the churros. Several of our guests were gluten-free and vegitarian...all were satisfied. We'll use them again.

We used A-Plus Catering to hire a bartender for a smallish family party of 24 people. The bartender, Mike, was on time, personable, organized, and did a great job. I would definitely use them again.

Debbie was absolutely outstanding. We hosted a dinner party for 12 people at our home and wanted to ensure it was a special experience for all. Debbie came up with a delicious and practical menu that was both delicious and took into account various dietary restrictions. She arrived early to prepare, was flexible to our timing when things started a little late, and ensured everything was tidy/clean before she left. In terms of food, everything was fantastic, but the Chicken Marbella and the Apple Crisp were especially delicious. Our guests left asking whether Debbie could help them with their next meal. We would highly recommend her :)!

Stephanie cooked an amazing dinner for my company holiday party (14 people). She was on time, extremely helpful and allowed the group to have a great time without worrying about what was going on in the kitchen. The food was fantastic - good quality and wonderfully prepared.

I had a great experience with hiring Kitchenina as our caterers for an event with 40 people. The communication was always prompt, polite and friendly. They did a great job on the day of the event to ensure that the food was delivered on time (despite the traffic/weather conditions) and made my job as the event organizer much easier. I would definitely work with Kitchenina again in the future, and regret that I did not take photos of the food! (Thanks for the brownies as well!)

I have never used a caterer before so I really did not know what to expect. I had an idea of what I wanted and a vision of how I wanted things to go. Deborah and her assistant went above and beyond my expectations and vision. We discussed a plan prior to the party and I let her know I just did not want to worry about anything and be able to enjoy the party. She allowed me to do just that and the service she provided was excellent. I unfortunately had some stragglers come in late and she eagerly fixed them a plate with no questions asked. Everything was just as clean, if not cleaner, when they left as it was when they arrived. I would highly recommend her to anyone who is thinking of having a caterer at their party.

This was our first time having a chef for a house party with ~15 guests, and I highly recommend Graceful Kitchen! Chef Grace was able to accommodate our request for vegetarian food, and presented us with several good choices. She was there ahead of time, and the food, esp. the pasta, received good feedback from everyone that attended. I will use Graceful Kitchen again for future events.

WE had the pleasure of having Daniella as our Rising star chef for the month of November at Rosenblum Cellars. She was great! She gave thoughtful pairings for our Zinfandel wines. The food was tasty and the customers really enjoyed it. Her Pop Up dinner party was even better! 27 satisfied customers, 5 courses of delicious Moroccan inspired food. So easy to work with, and clean up and set up was super easy! I highly recommend Daniella to anyone seeking a fresh food chef with innovative ideas!

I wanted to have a gorgeous dinner party for 30 of my colleagues at my home, and Graham and his staff made that happen. He took care of EVERYTHING - planned the meal, shopped, set a stunning table, brought perfectly paired wine and cooked and served everything. It was a seamless, lovely meal and we all felt like we'd been transported to an elegant yet relaxed restaurant. As the Host, it was a completely stress- free experience, and everyone is asking when we'll do it again...soon! Graham left everything spotless and everyone smiling. This guy can cook...and he's wonderful to have around. Two big thumbs up.

Albert, from the start, was warm and professional. This man knows his way around the kitchen! He and his lovely wife, Antonia, whipped up the most amazing vegetarian dinner for a family party (12 adults, 6 kids). Even the meat-lovers were shocked to learn that vegetarian meals were delectable. :) He was on time, clean/quick, and presented some gorgeous dishes. I'm hiring him for all future parties; he left my kitchen spotless. :) He is warm, personable, and the list goes on. Thank you, Albert and Antonia, for an awesome night.

Rose Johnson Catering was my party partner for our son’s engagement celebration last weekend in Orinda. The party was a huge success, and Rose and her team deserve much credit for the success. Rose responded to my Thumbtack inquiry with a prompt, thorough, and reasonable bid. However, after viewing her beautiful website, I replied to Rose that while I personally thought her menus were perfection, my son had specified that he did not want the food for his party to be “too fancy.” I told Rose the party would be a casual afternoon affair on our deck and I feared her culinary talents would be wasted on my son and my husband. Rose persevered, pointing out in her reply that she could do a barbecue with a southwestern flavor. The food need not be "fancy," she observed, but it should be tasty. And she sent me a custom menu that my son, his fiancée, my sisters, my husband and I all proclaimed perfect, including seared medium rare tri-tip of beef with chimichurri sauce, grilled cilantro chicken with tortillas, chipotle laced potato salad, and Mexican rice, bean, and corn salad. But Rose did not stop with sending me the menu; she said she would use my kitchen and grill on my deck, ensuring the food would be fresh as well as tasty. And after I hired her, she came to my home to check out my kitchen, my deck, and my grill and advised me on renting and setting up dining rounds and serving tables, as well as how to ensure good traffic flow for 50 guests. Rose is a real party expert, and I am not, so her advice was very much appreciated. The day of the party, Rose, Floricel and Esteban arrived a full two hours early and took charge. I hired Rose Johnson Catering for the food, which they delivered beautifully. As it turned out, they helped with the entire party, going above and beyond in many instances and showing poise and flexibility in the face of surprises, like my son’s decision to give a speech and set off a round of champagne toasts before dessert. Rose poured the champagne herself. Several guests asked me during the party: Who catered this? Who is your caterer? I happily provided several referrals to Rose Johnson Catering. Guest comments about the food were very positive: Mike: “The tri-tip was great.” Helen: “The grilled chicken was fabulous.” Kay: “I loved the potato salad. And the guacamole was wonderful.” Liz: “So nice to have so many dishes gluten-free.” Cindy: “The brownies were amazing. I told them so.” Bill: “Those parfaits were a big hit.” Matt: “Great food! Great service!” There was plenty of food for 50 guests, even with 1/3 of them being hungry 20-something friends of my son’s from high school and college. We even had leftovers, which Rose packed up and left in my refrigerator, along with leaving my kitchen cleaner than she found it. My husband, son, future daughter-in-law and I made a brunch of the leftovers the next day, sharing the delicious food and happy memories of a wonderful party. Best of all, this was the first party I’ve ever hosted where I had a great time myself. I don’t think I’ll have another big party again without booking Rose Johnson Catering!

Lucas created and executed a beautifully, delicious menu for my mother's 75th birthday party. It was a dinner party of 20, and he accommodated all "special" requests. Pleasing 20 people at once is no easy feat, but Lucas, and his server Doug, worked flawlessly together to make every one feel special and important. The food was amazing- meyer lemon cream shrimp fettucine-Yum - chateaubriand steak- delicious and cooked to perfection, shrimp canapes, decadent mac and cheese- he pulled it off to perfection. We could not have asked for anything more - it was beyond our expectations for this very special evening. Lucas is a great find!

I worked with Dennis at Liberation Foods to cater my son's 6th birthday party. The food was DELICIOUS. My only regret was that we only had 1 hour of food time (due to the venue, not Liberation)! :) Highly recommend and will definitely use again.

We recently hired Eileen and her staff with What's Cookin to cater a backyard luau party. From beginning to end, she was very easy to work with. The bottom line is that her food was AMAZING! What a talent!! Our party guests raved about the dishes she prepared. Since the party was themed, we worked together to come up with the perfect selections for a summer luau. Her staff that worked the party with her were super friendly and smiley, professional, and instinctively knew how to "be there" for our guests needs. As the hosts of the party, my husband and I were able to focus entirely on our guests, which is exactly what we were looking for. We were all very impressed with everything, and are certain we found our new favorite caterer! Thanks Eileen and your staff for a job well done!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to hire a caterer?

Catering prices depend mainly on how fancy you want the food and service to be and how many guests you’ll have. When you’re first looking to hire a caterer for your event, consider how many guests you’ll have and your total food and drink budget. The national average for event catering is $340, but catering prices can range into the thousands depending on your menu, guest count, and service.

Event catering is a broad term that covers everything from fully prepared, ready-to-eat food that the hosts plate and serve themselves to full-service, multicourse meals, including rental of linens, glassware and other items, with service staff organized by the catering company. Usually a caterer will determine cost based on the type of event you’re having, how many guests will attend, the level of service you desire, and what type of menu you’d like to have. For example, if you have a set catering budget, say $1,500, and you plan to have 50 people attend, that means you have $30 per person for food. If you have the same budget with 100 people, you have $15 per person for food. In this way, the number of people you want to attend your event and the level of food you want to serve them determines how much catering will cost.

How much should catering cost per person?

Catering prices can range from about $10 per guest on the low end to $150 or more per person on the high end. Catering costs represent the quality of food, presentation, variety, ingredients and service. But catering prices are more than the cost to cook the food that will be at your party; they also include the cost for the company to do business. Here is a simple breakdown of catering prices:

  • Menu: The food you serve your guests will directly affect the price per person. Organic ingredients, complex recipes, elaborate presentations, or high-ticket items like lobster or filet mignon all add to the cost.
  • Service: Buffet, family style, plated dinners — how you serve the food affects the cost per person. For example, a true plated meal can cost about twice the price of a staff-assisted buffet because of staffing costs. Hiring waiters, bartenders and cleanup crew will all be calculated into the per-person catering price.
  • Drinks: Providing beverages and alcoholic drinks for guests greatly increases your catering budget. Hosting an open bar can cost as much per person as the meal.
  • Rentals: Seating, plates, glassware, etc., will all have an effect on the cost per person for catering. For example, a plastic conference table that seats 10 costs about $6 to rent on average, while a wooden farmhouse table is about $80 to rent on average.
  • Business costs: Any catering cost will also include the cost for the company to do business such as insurance, employee wages, commercial kitchen space and more.
