Moira D. says, "If I could give ten stars, I would. Mr. Garcia was literally my freaking hero. He gave me really friendly reminders and updates, and educated himself about my issue (based on my very inadequate descriptions, and pictures I sent in a panic while my garbage disposal broke and flooded my sink with the foul smelling buildup of many years of use and coated the inside of my dishwasher with nasty sediment). He told me his prediction of what my problem was (a professional consultation he provided remotely that 1) was 100% accurate, and 2) free. I checked MANY places that day, and every other place charged about $45 for a remote consultation). He also gave me an estimate for what he expected to do before even coming over. My bathroom drains were also flooding and I was absolutely desperate. He was very empathetic and nice about it. He arrived on time despite the fact that it was pouring rain and there were floodings and road closings all over Santa Cruz. I later found out that he had driven over very early that morning FROM SANTA CLARA so he could safely get to Santa Cruz in the morning before the flood warning affecting his transportation would take effect. He should have charged me for his commute, in retrospect. He. fixed. everything. He worked diligently for 4 hours straight, and not only were my problems repaired… he rolled his sleeves up, got out some seriously impressive equipment, put in some serious physical labor, and repaired the structural problems with the house’s plumbing that 3 different plumbers from Roto Rooter had told me said couldn’t be fully fixed. He only charged a ridiculously small FRACTION for those four hours of seriously complicated plumbing work. He also refused a tip. He was an angel from heaven and performed miracles. 100/10, would highly recommend."See more

Carlos R. says, "I would like to start this review by saying that the application only asked me for three things that I liked about working with 5-Point Plumbing Corp. I chose three because that was the maximum number of choices. Bit I want to give the ‘en the five choices. 1) Work Quality 2) Professionalism 3) Responsiveness 4) Value and 5) Punctuality. In my humble opinion, they deserve and A+ on each one of those categories. Why? I’ve hired 5-Point Plumbing a couple of times. They were the only ones that answered the phone immediately when I wane looking for a plumbing service in my area. The others didn’t answer at all or I was forwarded to automated machines in other cities. The first time I called, I spoke with Mariah, and she was so nice courteous. She said her crew was coming from Palo Alto, but they would show up, even when it was after 5:00pm. They did. They came, assessed the situation and came back the next day at 8:00am to replace my front and backyard water faucets. They didn’t an excellent job. The second time I hired them, they showed up in time, just like the first time, Omar and Jose who I already knew from the first visit, replaced a bathroom sink faucet and a kitchen faucet . My kitchen faucet was leaking, so I called the company and they scheduled another visit, they came a couple of times to check the problem and came to the conclusion of her the faucet I had bought was defective. I ran to the place where I had bought my kitchen faucet, bought a new one and called 5-Point one more time. They were always nice to me and said that it was all under warranty, so, Omar came one last time, replaced it and voila. Our Kitchen faucet works perfectly. I would like to highly recommend 5-Point Coro. For any plumbing needs you have. My wife and I are planning to continue to work with them since we’re extremely happy with whet they’ve done for us. I’m sure you’ll be happy too."See more

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to fix a drain?

If you hire someone to fix your drain and clean it out, it will likely cost around $150-$200. This cost is likely to change based on a few factors, including:

  • The complexity and location
  • The type of repair needed (hydro jetting is more expensive than snaking, for example)
  • If the plumber needs to perform a video inspection
  • If the plumber needs to fix issues with the main sewer line
  • If it’s an emergency repair
  • Or if the plumber has to provide additional plumbing repairs

Always get estimates from a handful of plumbers to find out exactly how much your repair will cost.

What do plumbers use to unclog drains?

Plumbers use two main methods to unclog drains. The first is a snake, which is a long, flexible metal coil that works its way through tight corners to dislodge whatever is causing the clog. This can be either hand-operated or motorized. More costly is hydro jetting, which involves shooting high-pressure water through a clogged drain to remove buildup from grease and other substances, as well as to remove clogs.

When should you call a plumber for a clogged drain?

Assess the situation and try a few at-home solutions. For example:

  • Did you try several DIY methods (using a plunger, drain cleaner, drain snake, etc.)?
  • Are there multiple clogged drains in your home?
  • Do you suspect your main sewer line is clogged?

If you answer yes to any of these questions, it might be worth contacting a plumber near you to come diagnose and fix your drain issue.

How much do plumbers charge per hour?

Depending on the service you need (unclogging a drain, fixing a pipe, installing new pipes, etc.), plumbers charge anywhere from $45-$165 per hour. Plumbers often operate on a fixed rate model, too. Some won’t charge hourly rates because the variables involved in their work makes it less practical to do so.

Plumbers will scope out the work, calculate the cost of parts, and roll it together with other fees to give you an estimate for the job. They may even offer standard flat rates for things like installing a toilet or a sink. Reach out to plumbers near you to get an accurate cost estimate for your project or repair.

What are plumbers and what do they do?

Plumbers are skilled professionals who are trained to install and maintain pipes and systems for drinking water, sewage and drainage. They usually have trained through four- to five-year training programs, which include apprenticeships, via trade schools and community colleges. Plumbers’ areas of expertise typically go beyond pipes to include mathematics, blueprint reading, plumbing codes and water distribution. They handle plumbing emergencies, such as broken pipes or clogged drains, and install and maintain everything from a new piping system to a replacement faucet. Plumbers also know how to install bathtubs and showers, toilets, water heaters and dishwashers. Plumbers may work on residential or commercial sites, sometimes designing and laying out a pipe system during construction.

How do you find a good plumber?

Whether you need a plumber to perform drain repair, install a new fixture, or replace rusty pipes, you need to make sure you hire someone reliable who will finish your job on time and within budget. Start by asking the plumbers on your short list these questions:

  • What is the total cost? Make sure your estimate includes materials and labor. Find out whether the plumber will be providing the materials and whether you’re being charged an hourly rate (which is variable) or a flat fee.
  • Is removal and cleanup included in the job? Some plumbers leave behind old parts, while others include the cleanup in the cost.
  • Is the work guaranteed? Find out whether the work (as well as the parts or fixtures) are guaranteed under a warranty.

Follow these additional tips for confidently hiring a plumber or other skilled professional.

Do plumbers offer remote or virtual services?

If you see a profile that states the plumber is offering remote services, contact the plumber before hiring them to see what those services include. Although plumbing is a job that has to be done in-person, you can ask them if they offer virtual consultations or an online walk-through.
