Michelle is a warm and inviting person who made me feel comfortable very quickly. She has been a great mentor and helped me overcome many obstacles in the aftermath of a serious life event I experienced. I felt I could be me without any concern for fear of how she may react. I have done traditional therapy but have preferred her holistic approach to combining therapy with a goal oriented approach to solving problems one may be experiencing. I have been able to get to a much better place in my life thanks to her support and the perspective she helps me obtain through self reflection. She encourages you just enough to help you push past your self-set limits without ever feeling like she is pushing you past your boundaries. Somehow, I always get to the realization I need on my own terms but with the help of her encouragement. I love her approach and feel that her respectful manner along with her warm, understanding attitude creates a space for one to really get down to one's core and find one's self in the process. She has truly been a gift to my life.

My 8 year old suffered from terrible separation anxiety. So bad that she couldn't go to school. It was heartbreaking and we tried different types of therapy and then I found dr John. He was very helpful and informative, we talked on the phone a couple of times before our meeting. My daughter felt safe with him right away and the hypnotherapy session was amazing. After one session she was back to herself! I'm so thankful for Dr John McCrail, he's the best!

Coming from someone who has gone to therapy since I was 4 I must say..... Stephanie is absolutely amazing. My husband and I have seen her twice so far and we feel so much better. She has helped us communicate and feel safe. She is so warm and easy to connect to, she makes us feel comfortable opening up even about the most intimate details. She gives us exercises to do in between sessions so we keep improving. I would recommend her to everyone. She has won us for life and has really helped save our marraige. Thanks Stephanie we love and appreciate you!

Vili handled my father's physical therapy as he recovered from hip replacement. I hired him on top of what insurance provided because my father had knee problems that made traditional exercises hard. His work was better than those supplied by insurance and he was so thoughtful he even came in to check on my father on days he wasn't working. Highly recommended.

I am very happy with the services that I received from Dr. Murray S. Kaufman. The first time that I visited him I literally was a mess. I was dealing with IBS, and the condition was killing me because I didn't know how to live with it. I went to see Dr. Kaufman with the intention to receive a hypnosis protocol for IBS. I started the protocol; however, the doctor realized that I was suffering from anxiety disorder that was making the IBS flare up, and I started a therapy to work on that. Dr. Kaufman helped me to find the roots of my anxiety and how to deal with them. Every session was very productive, and I learned a lot about myself and dealing with my conditions. Now, I am in a much better place in life, and so thankful to Dr. Kaufman, because he helped me to overcome one of the darkest moments of my life. He is very knowledgeable, dedicated and professional. I recommend him from my heart to yours.

Before I met Dr. Stephanie I suffered with depression on a daily basis. I saw her for therapy for about a year and my depression is now gone! She was understanding, patient, and gave me guidance. Each session was relaxing and therapeutic and I left feeling renewed and rejuvenated. I learned tools that helped me with relaxation, self-love and acceptance, and how to make new friends and build healthy relationships. THANK YOU Dr. Stephanie, you are amazing and I appreciate what you did for me, and since our time together I now live a joyous life.

AG is a relationship expert! I personally trust no one else with my sensitive topics about love and communication. Coaching is NOT therapy and Coach AG does a wonderful job at defining the two. She creates a welcoming environment for my partner and I to openly express our thoughts about our love life, friendship and overall happiness levels with each other. My love life has flourished and the relationship with my employees has also improved; thanks to her encouraging communication techniques. I would recommend AG's Relationship and Sexuality coaching to individuals who have skepticism about life coaches and relationship gurus; her expertise will set even the shyest and most obstinate communicator at ease.

Working with Saman for almost 3 years and I have to say that he has blossomed into a great professional. To be honest I was really skeptical if therapy was right for me, seeing as I only met him a year or so into his internship so I wasn't sure if he was able to help me. He is a very patient, compassionate and understanding person who takes this field of work to heart...It's pretty much his calling in life. Fast forward two and a half years later, I've learned ways to cope with my anxiety and have gained the confidence to accomplish my goals in my life.

'Natara has been my guide to the ultraworld for years. Her caring and open way leads me to discover new and exciting things about myself and others. Her integrity and sense of quiet balance are the gifts which set her apart as a teacher, healer, and shaman in a workshop or large ceremony gathering. I look forward each year to my month-by-month reading, and have traveled to participate in her sound bath therapy and Reiki sessions. I especially recommend her "Shift" workshop which is like an unrolling of one big bounteous medicine bundle for everyone to find something (or everything) to enjoy. Thank you, 'Natara for your unwavering and bright light in this time of great and accelerating change.

      About

I am a bilingual, bicultural self-starter who is currently accepting new clients. I offer an open, compassionate approach and believe that a valuable lesson lies behind every uncomfortable or confusing emotion. As we collaborate on your therapy journey, we will understand the purpose these feelings serve within you. Together, we can start to reframe all of your experiences and emotions as adaptive. Change begins with acceptance and self-compassion. We will work on understanding YOU and get to know your truth, then turn to new pathways that encourage your growth. I was raised by an American father and Peruvian mother, an upbringing that has given me a lens that holds and respects culture, complexity, and perspective. I obtained my Masters Degree in Clinical Psychology at Pepperdine University, which provided a solid grounding of Psychodynamic Therapy and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. I mostly, however, practice Relational Gestalt Therapy, which focuses on processing emotions and sensations in the here and now. As we mold these theories and techniques together, we can explore trauma, anxiety, and depression, as well as how they arise in the present-moment felt experience. By exploring what happens in both the mind and body, we can start to calm anxious, depressive thoughts and feelings. I aim to honor each of your needs and create a collaborative, safe space that gives you a say in how your therapy operates.

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What are the types of psychologists?

Psychologists are healthcare professionals who use scientific methods to understand the relationships between the brain, environment and behavior. Psychologists may focus on research — studying how the brain and various environments drive behaviors to better understand the issues that trouble patients and society as a whole — or they may focus on practice — interacting with people using therapeutic methods. The American Psychological Association shares some of the more prevalent types of psychologists:

      • Clinical psychologists assess and treat mental, emotional and behavioral disorders.
      • Cognitive and perceptual psychologists study human perception, thinking and memory.
      • Community psychologists work to strengthen the abilities of communities, settings, organizations and broader social systems to meet people’s needs — such as improving support for victims of natural disasters, or working to improve health policies.
      • Counseling psychologists help people understand and take action on everyday issues, career and work problems, and serious adversity.
      • Developmental psychologists study the psychological development of the human being throughout life.
      • Educational psychologists concentrate on how effective teaching and learning take place.
      • Engineering psychologists conduct research on how people work best with machines.
      • Environmental psychologists study the dynamics of how people interact with their environments.
      • Evolutionary psychologists study how evolutionary principles such as mutation, adaptation and selective fitness influence human thought, feeling and behavior.
      • Experimental psychologists study cognitive processes, comparative psychology (cross-species comparisons), and learning and conditioning.
      • Forensic psychologists apply psychological principles to legal issues.
      • Health psychologists specialize in how biological, psychological and social factors affect health and illness.
      • Industrial/organizational psychologists apply psychological principles and research methods to the workplace to improve productivity, health and the quality of work life.
      • Neuropsychologists and behavioral neuropsychologists explore the relationships between brain systems and behavior.
      • Quantitative and measurement psychologists focus on methods and techniques for designing experiments and analyzing psychological data.
      • Rehabilitation psychologists work with stroke and accident victims, people with mental disabilities, and those with developmental disabilities caused by such conditions as cerebral palsy, epilepsy and autism.
      • School psychologists assess and counsel students, consult with parents and school staff, and conduct behavioral interventions when appropriate.
      • Social psychologists study how a person’s mental life and behavior are shaped by interactions with other people.
      • Sport psychologists help athletes refine their focus on competition goals, become more motivated, and learn to deal with anxiety and fear of failure around competition.

      What is a psychologist?

A psychologist is a professionally trained mental health professional who helps patients navigate challenging life situations or mental health issues. To become a psychologist you must earn a doctoral degree; qualifying degrees include a Ph.D., Psy.D. or Ed.D. To actively practice, a psychologist must be licensed in their state and maintain good standing. Psychologists are trained to administer tests that can evaluate a patient’s cognitive strength and weaknesses, intellectual skills, vocational aptitude and preference, personality characteristics, and neuropsychological functioning, explains the American Psychological Association (APA).

A psychologist meets with patients in an office and may work with a variety of methods, depending on patient need, such as cognitive, behavioral or interpersonal.  According to the APA, common reasons a person may visit a psychologist include:

      • Dealing with depression, anger or anxiety over a long period of time.
      • Help with a chronic condition that is interfering with their lives or physical health.
      • Help with grieving and other abrupt transitions.
      • Overcoming addictions.
      • Managing chronic illness.
      • Breaking old and harmful patterns of thinking or behavior.

Can a clinical psychologist write prescriptions?

To be able to write a prescription, a clinical psychologist must practice in a state that permits them to do so, and must either have a master’s degree in psychopharmacology or have completed the required advanced training program. According to the American Psychological Association (APA), five states currently permit psychologists to write prescriptions: Idaho, New Mexico, Illinois, Iowa and Louisiana. Many psychologists who are not able to write prescriptions work in partnership with psychiatrists, pediatricians or primary care doctors to help their patients who need medication.

      How much do therapists cost?

If you are experiencing a challenging time, have mental health difficulties, or just want professional guidance as you move through life, a therapist can provide relief, tools and structure. The national average cost for a therapist is $80-$100 per hour, although prices may be higher or lower depending on geographic location and the experience and training of the therapist.

Psychiatrists, psychologists and licensed therapists are all health professionals who offer various modalities of therapy. Ask questions about the type of therapy they specialize in (such as cognitive or behavioral, etc.) and their area of expertise (such as grief, anxiety, body image disorders, etc.) to help you find the right fit for your needs. Therapy sessions are typically 50-60 minutes long.  The patient usually meets with the therapist in their office; sessions may also be held remotely (via Skype, etc.) or in a clinical setting. Psychologists, psychiatrists and other therapists who have earned advanced degrees will typically charge higher rates than other licensed therapists. Depending on your diagnosis, your health insurance may cover your therapy costs.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
