John and his team are very professional and friendly. They showed up on time, were very responsive by text and through Thumbtack, and gave me a competitive price on the removal of a 60 foot Liquidambar tree. They worked fast and even did a great job with the cleanup. I'd definitely use John and his team again for future tree trimming/removal needs.

Mark and his team did a fantastic job removing two huge trees in our front yard and grinding the stumps as well as removal of a few other smaller trees. He communicated with us through the whole job, did fantastic and quick work, and didn't over charge. Would recommend his services to others and use him again in the future.

We were so pleased with the work of Silvestre and his team. They were flexible in working with us to schedule our project and then completed the entire backyard redesign incredibly quickly. I particularly appreciated two things: 1) they brought the right resources for each stage of the project, and we were never slowed down waiting for a particular tool or more workers. This was particularly impressive because our project involved a number of steps, including turf removal, concrete removal, framing installation, planting, rocks, etc. 2) While Silvestre and his team were quick they were also thorough. I felt like they cared about how the project looked in the end and they invested time in clean-up and final presentation. We would strongly recommend them.

Front yard tree passed away after a long struggle due to the drought. Needed to have the tree removed as it was infected with insects. Found a certified tree company (formal name but can't recall). Owner of company came, assessed damaged, recommended several suggestions Tree replaced with new planting. Owner contacted several nurseries, located a tree (Prairie Red, drought tolerant) within price range and delivered for planting. Ensured that the new tree would receive sufficient water for growth. Took tree for disposal. All work was done for under $500. Highly recommend company for quick, efficient tree removal. Service included tree grinding.

Dave helped me when I had a multi trunk oak fall on my house. He and his crew minimized any further damage to the house and got the tree trunks off the roof. He chipped the brush and stacked the wood like he said, in addition to answering all my texts and calls. I really appreciate Dave's business and plan to use his tree services on other jobs.

Outstanding customer service from the exceptionally reasonable initial estimate to the final care and clean-up. Kimo came out said the job was actually very easy (the removal of a single 20' tree), and cut the initial on-line estimate in half. Two days later, my tree was gone, and the clean-up so excellent there wasn't a fleck of sawdust left. Not to mention that the job was done for what I consider pocket change compared to the other estimates I got. I will recommend Wright Landscape and Design to anyone I know who needs future landscaping work done. Nice job!

He is a no-nonsense professional that takes both the customer's and his time seriously. He (and his crew) completed the job in 3 hours... I thought it would take a good part of the day. I am definitely using Duran Landscaping for all my future tree and landscaping needs. I highly recommend him... you won't be disappointed.

Remove tile from existing fireplace and replace with stone. Frame out kitchen island with wainscoting. Garret and his team were very efficient, on time and had attention to details. The projects performed were redo's from the housing contractor who did shotty work, walls not flushed, etc. SOTA was very meticulous in making sure everything met up correctly and looked they way it should. They kept the areas cleaned and made sure to clean up after themselves. Stayed late to get the project completed. I would use them again in a heart beat and recommend them for interior improvements.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to remove a tree stump?

Once you have a tree cut down, you’ll probably want to remove the tree stump as well. You may want the stump removed for aesthetics, the tree stump could be diseased, you might want to prevent regrowth, or you may find the roots are causing problems and need to be removed. Tree removal costs don’t always include the cost to grind out or dig out a tree stump after the tree has been felled and the trunk removed. The national average cost for stump removal ranges from $150 to $200. There are two main methods for dealing with tree stumps. In grinding, pros use a chipping machine to grind away the above-level tree stump until it sits just below the soil surface. Tree stump removal entails lifting the entire root ball of a tree out of the soil. Removing the stump will leave a hole in the ground and also take more time, labor and money than stump grinding. Here are some examples of average tree stump removal costs:

  • Stump grinding: $2-$4 per inch.
  • Tree stump removal: average of $60-$350.

The final price will depend on the stump’s size, condition, location and condition of the soil around it.

How much does it cost to trim a tree?

The national price range for tree trimming is $270-$450. Tree trimming is often done by a professional arborist who is trained to safely trim and prune trees for both the health of the tree and the safety of the residents and their property. Trying to do your own tree trimming is not advisable unless you have the proper know-how. Tree trimming companies may charge an hourly rate for their services. The hourly rate may be higher or lower for different trees to reflect the relative safety measures, skill, equipment or people power needed to handle the job. For this reason, most tree services provide free estimates.

One example of an hourly rate for professional tree trimming services is $150 per hour. Costs may be under $100 or could be higher than $300 per hour, depending on variables such as proximity to buildings, health of the tree, height and diameter of the tree, and type of tree trimming desired. Geography and regional cost of living and regional costs to do business will also play a role in your tree removal costs.

How much does it cost to remove a fallen tree?

If you need to have a tree cut down, have you planned what will happen next? Arborists often charge an additional fee to quarter and remove the fallen tree from your property, so anticipate this as part of your tree removal costs. You can elect to have the wood cut for use in your fireplace, or you may prefer to have it hauled away completely.

Tree removal costs may vary based on the height and the width of the felled tree. Size affects the labor required for removal, which will be reflected in the cost. For example, a tree service company may charge an additional $100-$120 to haul away the pieces of a felled tree. The service may cost as little as $75 in some regions and more than $150 in others. Regional labor rates, the cost of living and the cost to do business in your area will be reflected in your tree removal cost.

How much does it cost to cut a tree down?

When you’re ready to have a tree on your property come down, it’s time to call an arborist. The national average price range for tree-trimming costs is $270-$450. Tree removal costs can vary based on the height, diameter, location and health of the tree, and on whether you want to remove the stump. Height plays a major role in tree removal costs. Small trees, no more than 30 feet tall, are usually thinner in diameter and easier and safer for an arborist to manage. Removal of a small tree can cost anywhere from under $150 to over $450. Removal of medium-height trees, from 30 feet to 60 feet tall, could cost anywhere between $150 and $850 or more. Tall trees, typically 60 feet to 80 feet tall, may start at $500 or cost more than $1,000 to cut down. As the height and diameter increase, so does the cost.

Location is critical, too. Removing a tree in an open space is quicker and presents fewer obstacles than removing a tree that is growing flush to your house. Arborists can assess your tree and provide you with quotes based on the variables involved. For example, removing a medium-size hackberry tree that was growing too close to a home — the roots were damaging the home’s foundation — cost $1,500. This price included rope-down, house protection, tree quartering and stacking, and stump removal.

How much does it cost to have your lawn mowed?

Regular lawn maintenance can do wonders for your home’s curb appeal. Professional lawn care prices will vary based on the regional cost to do business and regional cost of labor, the size of your lawn, and any additional services you may desire such as edging or mulching. The national average for lawn mowing costs is $30-$50. Pros may charge an hourly rate, a flat rate or by the square foot (an acre contains 43,560 square feet). Square footage rates factor in the professional’s time, the use of their equipment, and the gas to operate the mower. Distance may also affect cost: If you live outside the company’s standard service range, you may pay an additional travel fee. Here are some examples of average prices for mowing and lawn maintenance:

  • Up to 8,000-square-foot property: $30 per week/$120 per month.
    • Bimonthly: $40 per service/$80 per month.
    • One time only: $45 per service.
      • Prices include mowing all turf grass areas; trimming grass away from fences, structures, trees, and lawn edges; and clearing or blowing all grass trimmings from driveways, sidewalks, curbs, etc.
  • Hourly rate: $25 per hour (including travel, equipment costs and labor).
  • Lot size:
    • Smaller lots in subdivisions: $35.
    • Half-acre lot: $50.
    • One-acre lot: $100.
